I would have put this up earlier but had to figure out how to get a pic to show… (yeah, I’m slow at times…) This shows the Energy Efficient Ethernet setting (if your H/W supports it).

I dont have Energy Efficient Ethernet on the options… but the lamp is blinking on and off

Make sure it’s not just an activity light. My connector only lights up if the interface is powered but does not blink when transferring data… some do IIRC. If you open the Network and Sharing Center window and look in “View your active networks”, you will see the connection going up and down if your system has an Energy Efficient Ethernet,

Edit: My bad… there is a tiny activity light on my connector as well as the power light.

Another annoyance…

For those who run Norton AV (assuming you ever succeed at installing it), check to make sure Windows Defender is turned off. Mine seems to have gotten turned back on somehow. Running two antivirus programs at the same time causes a performance hit.

Hmmm…I don’t seem to have the “Energy Efficient Ethernet” setting available to me!

Not surprising. It is most likely found on portable devices that have an ethernet plug. It may not be supported by some network chipsets. I noticed the LEDs on my interface cycling on and off and found this setting. The constant renegotiating a connection to my router every time it cycled on made the game so laggy it was nearly unplayable.

I was intending this thread contain only those issues that affect playing GW2. Other windows issues should more properly be directed to the MS forum or one of the “I HATE WINDOWS” sites.

To disable driver downloads, you need to ferret out “System” in the control panel (or use Win+Pause key combination), select “Advanced System Settings”, go to the hardware tab and select “Device Installation Settings” and select the radio button that says “No, let me choose what do”. Talk about a scavenger hunt!

Had the MOAI (mother of all installs) go bad on another laptop. Oddly, the Win10 upgrade went smoothly using the ISO install tool. Unfortunately, a new Win10 graphics driver for AMD/Radeon and higher-end cards failed multiple times… finally gave up. Then Norton Security Suite (which installed perfectly on this system) just hung trying to start after the install. Three tries failed. Ran the removal tool and scrubbed it from the system so now running Defender. Forums tell me I’m not alone.

Not sure I would really recommend upgrading an older system that came with anything older than Win8x. If you want to try, I suggest you back up your current system and try to do a clean install of Win10 from media… available from MS… search for Windows 10 ISO download, get the tool from MS site, download Win10 and burn a DVD. (then say a prayer…)

If all else fails and you really need your daily GW fix, you have about 1 month to roll your system back to the previous O/S using the Recovery selection in Settings→Update & Security.

I’d assume you’re able to disable automatic updates or select the Nvidia ones from not installing on their own ?

I don’t have windows 10 though…not sure about it yet either.

I’ve heard (meaning I don’t really know it as fact) you cannot refuse or hide a critical/important update with the new Win10 updater. I only had a couple of updates after loading so I didn’t really look closely at it yet. I was bouncing all over sites looking for a solution to the activation issue and caught many MS hate site postings out of the corner of my eye. The reason for the new way winupbreak works is to make your windows more stable and predictable… no missing pieces and everyone has the same basic code base. (I don’t hate MS… I just think they make some really stupid decisions.)

The nVidia problem was that MS forced a driver update for those desky-top cards or SLI configs with the code modified a la MS. This broke many high end graphics setups. Unfortunately, they believe we are too stupid to load 3rd party drivers so WinUpdate trumps anything you want to load especially an older driver that actually works. You’d a thunk they learned their lesson taking away the classic desktop in Win8. Fortunately I have a mobile Radeon chipset so I only suffered through trying to activate the install (they broke the activation server with the 3 insider builds they rolled out in the last few days… and you thought the latest GW2 patch was bad).

nVidia quickly rolled a new driver out to overcome this “little” problem.

Not related to GW but it seems certain versions of W10 will not activate. This does not affect playing the game, however. My son’s Win7Pro activated immediately but my 8.1 Home refused to activate after severval dozen attempts over the last few hours. (Funny story… finally got fed up and called phone activation… while on hold I tried to activate two more times… activated on the 2nd try!)

Glad to hear there are some updated drivers coming out. Any info on Win10 that could affect my GW addiction id greatly appreciated.

I’m planning to take the plunge whenever it comes up on mine, this is good to know, appreciate it.

I just checked my Get Windows 10 icon and it said ready to update. No other notification.

It took roughly 1.5 hours and the license agreement was hiding under the update screen… wasted half an hour wondering what was taking so long. So far I haven’t been able to activate it… typical problems…

The good news is that the game seems to run just fine. I need to stress the video driver with a good boss fight… new drivers aren’t always available when there is a new O/S release.

Now where did my antivirus S/W go? Oh yeah, Windows Defender replaced it. Other 3rd party S/W also has gone missing so be prepared….

First glitch for Windows 10…

While loading the update, I noticed my ethernet light blinking on and off and remembered this issue from 8.1. On laptops (not sure about desktops) the ethernet adapter is preset for “Energy Efficient Ethernet”. This means lag, lag, lag as your ethernet adapter shuts off when not busy (playing GW2) and then has to negotiate a connection each time it has to talk to the server. NOOOOO!

Hunt through your shiny new start menu and select the “Settings” tile, then select “Network and Internet”. Select the “Ethernet” on the menu at the left and then “Change Adapter Settings on the right. This brings up the Network Connections” dialog box (you could just go there direct in the Control Panel if you can find it). Right click on your ethernet adapter (it should show your network or be flashing on and off) and select “Properties”. Click the “Configure” button and select the Advanced tab. Select the “Energy Efficient Ethernet” setting and disable it… problem solved.

Knockback PSA.

Jimson.5168

It’s unfortunate that the main interrupt a Ranger can use is a knockback. Rangers have no choice but to have this skill if they equip a LB. Many times you are getting clobbered, your health is down to double digits, and every other skill is recharging and #4 is the only skill left as an enemy is tangling you up in vines or get ready to drop a hammer on you. Rangers who really know how to skillfully fight with finesse when “ranging” about solo do refrain from using a knockback in group/melee situations but in the heat of a desperate fight tend to use #4 as a last ditch effort to survive. This, of course does not excuse the inexperienced/lazy Ranger who simply button mashes the skills because they do not care enough to learn to fight intelligently. I would suggest if you don’t care to learn how to use a particular profession’s skill effectively, go roll some other char where button mashing might be sloppy but effective.

Rangers are not easy to play at the higher levels of the game, but this does make it more challenging. At least the GW2 Ranger is a lot more viable that GW1’s Ranger which I had to abandon because it was so weak. I don’t think Rangers are suitable for dungons, WvW, or PvP but that’s just my opinion so I don’t expect others to agree. They are fine for puttering around PvE and for farming (and rezzing the occasional downed caster or tank one finds who thought they could solo PvE).

Bad players are just bad players. Blaming it on their choice of profession or skill set is not appropriate IMO. Blame the player who’s driving.

Indeed. All Rangers should fight with one hand tied behind their backs and take their medium level armor right up where close where their weapons are less effective. Heaven forbid they should fight in the way their skills force them. And those annoying pets they are forced to drag around just get in the way. They are almost as annoying as those silly cosmetic wings some people insist on wearing that constantly block everyone’s view. Perhaps Anet should consider removing the Ranger profession from the game because it annoys the glass tanks and AoE bombers who bring a nuke to a knife fight.

Is there gonna be Halloween event this year?

Jimson.5168

Since Halloween takes place in LA and that’s been rebuilt as well as all the NPCs we encounter may or may not need their stats and builds updated, wouldn’t that mean that Anet would have to pull people off of HoT to get it ready? Just wondering… not to mention all the holiday window dressing for the new buildings… <sigh>

Reading these forums seems to be the source of my discouragement. Really, this place is downright depressing. I’ve noticed my time in game has significantly been reduced since I started reading in here. I would love to see something of substantial value posted once in awhile instead of pages and pages of useless comments like this one.

I think so and well worth the gems to get it when it comes available during Winterfest, Not only can you craft there but you have a Mystic Forge, Merchant, Guild Bank, TP and a portal that takes you to the main portals throughout Tyria. Also, the pass gives you a no cost method of returning to a safe spot from any non-instanced area. There are a couple of other NPCs you can buy something from but I never use them so their function escapes me atm.
If you are into events, yes, the area is used occasionally for that but the above features are there all the time if you buy the permanent pass. Just remember that the TP only sells it once a year for a limited time… you have to remember to look for it.

edit: acck! I meant Wintersday and look for the pass on sale the last two weeks in December

I agree that it would be very welcome for Anet to be able to respond to the many(!) requests for information. Unfortunately, it looks like every time Anet sticks their head out here on the forums, someone is waiting to swing their greatsword at them if they don’t say what someone thinks the community wants to hear. Should a dev jokingly muse about creating fuzzy pink slippers for when you were lounging around AFK in LA there would be 10 threads screaming about why isn’t it out and when will we get them. I sometimes think Anet is just hunkered down in an outpost waiting for the Risen trebuchets to stop.

Perhaps Anet might respond to more reasonable requests than “I want it because I want it!” (Too bad the reasonable requests get drowned out by the whiners.)

I think you’re focusing too much on the golem issue and not enough on everything else that has been said.

I think you misread what I intended to say. It would be a waste of time for Anet to fix the golem bug or rework the maps of areas destined to go away in the hear future.

The worst part of program development is to have someone come by everyday and say the requirements and goals have changed yet again. The constant demand to change this and that is the single-most reason projects fail. It’s annoying from customers (not always.. there are some very bright users out there) and deadly from the PTBs. Every seemingly little feature that’s added tends to create at least 5 new bugs to track down and fix each of which tend to create new bugs.

All I’m saying is that the requests (and in some cases, outright demands) of the community are over the top of the limit anyone could hope to respond to or address in the midst of trying to create a new update. You can’t just tack that on to existing code and expect it to work. Anet’s silence does not surprise me at all. There is no way they could respond without setting off another griping war b y the people who think they are being ignored.

Anet should spend time and people resources on a bug that will disappear in a couple of days as well as working on a map that will disappear when HoT is released? Really? I’d rather they keep working on HoT. New content (however buggy) is preferable to me personally. (echoes of words “cost effectiveness” seem to float in the far reaches of the Silverwastes and in the remote corners of Orr…)

Perhaps you all think you could back seat manage a group of code geeks, artists, and storytellers that think it’s only their way or the highway… I know I couldn’t. Please think a little deeper than the display on your monitor about what it takes to put a game like this out and (miraculously) keep it more or less working. The complexity of this game makes me shudder and I was a programmer for 20+ years… I’ve been in those internal meetings way too many times not to understand that flame proof underwear is not an option.

Traeharne ?!?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Jimson.5168

Jimson.5168

It does not help Trahearn’s (read any Sylvari) reputation that the secret of the origin of the Sylvari race (that those who finished LS2 know) puts anything Trahearn does in doubt. (Hopefully that’s cryptic enough to not be a spoiler.) Don’t let the storyline color your perception of Trahearn. It will be interesting to see how Anet story makers handle the fate vs. free will for the Sylvari. I wouldn’t play this game if all it had was a never ending fight just to get loot… the story is what brings me back.

Strange… I thought people hated him for just saying “Well done!” ad nauseum.

Storywise, you joined the army so don’t expect to like your commander. At least you get to be 2IC so you get all the “fun” load of carrying the boss. If it weren’t for you, Trahearne would be a pile of splinters somewhere being scooped up for plant mulch by risen farmers. Who cares if he gets the credit? After all, it’s his strategy that leads to the destruction of Zhaitan and the possible restoration of Orr. Of course he gets the credit.
