My guide on PvE should help you even though it is mainly written for lvl80 farming. Just switch Duelling: Desperate Decoy with Sword Training and finish mobs off, when they get into melee range.

I for one am fairly curious. I hope for some new story arc, but some explorable area, this time with vistas and challenges, will do the trick too. Just fix the countless bugs, and don’t break the mesmer in PvE again…
Wv3 content will be jugded by it’s capability to draw more players to the playfields, but hey, hope is up.

PvE Melee Tank Build?

These answers are not helpful. Think outside the box. Class X can’t do job B because it’s role is N has been proven wrong too often by creative minds.

Time for some brainstorming:

- Trait: Illusionary Defense
- Skill: Phantasmal Defender

Should help to absorb a fair amount of dmg.

PvE Melee Tank Build?

Kaiyanwan.8521

As the title says, I am looking for a PvE tank build for my mesmer.

- Dual swords as main weapons
- Really wish we had an other melee weapon set, but off set would be staff (nothing else would make sense)
- 10 points in Dueling are a must for 1h sword trait
- 5 points in Illusions are a must for obvious reason

Main stats should be Toughness and Vitality (which will result in a gear mix).
I was playing around with some builds like 0/10/30/0/30 and 0/10/25/30/5 but I would appreciate some advice as I am not happy with the results.

Thanks.

Running GS 20/20/0/0/30 most of the time. If i feel like soloing stuff a lot, I play GS 20/30/0/0/20 like described in my Lazy guide on this forum.

GS is still a nice weapon, but I really wish they would fix the iZerker sooner than later.

Hey there, thanks for the replies, just wanted to give a bit Feedback (which I have hotkeyed to “C”)!

Kaiyanwan,
Thank you for this guide! I just rolled a Mesmer for the sole purpose of being lazy! (ports in Wv3 ftw!) I will be using every part of that build; mostly because I am too lazy to keep looking and it looks like maybe what I sort of been looking for.

I would be interested in how you get along with the specc in Wv3. As I said, it is mostly a PvE guide.

I find glass canon builds are not very effective in dungeons as there can be lots of AOE and other random damage that is very hard to avoid or unavoidable.

With full berserker’s armour, weapons and jewellery, you will only have about 15K HP with no toughness.

Well it is not a pure glass cannon build, as it has a fair amount of out of jail cards like Blink and Decoy. Pure glass cannon would be a mantra build, but that’s a different story.

For PvE I have used this build in FotM up to level 10 and in most cases it did surpisingly well. Fireboss might be an exception though.
This game is all about dodging, if you are good at it, most damage can be completely avoided.

Newbie questions on weapons and armour

1. Berserker is a prefix for stats, Power/Precision/CritDmg. Just look it up in the AH.
2. Depends on your playstyle.
3. Exotic armour has better stats.
4. Your karma won’t be enough to buy exotic equipment yet.

Starting a day with casting half an hour of mantras, no that’s not the lazy way. Mantras are in fact the opposite of lazy. They are time-consuming and pretty much useless most of the time.
I see where you are coming from, but mantras are not fun at all at PvE.

Well, the reason why they are fine in PvE, is because you never actually have to use them, so you just charge them up then completely forget they exist.

Yeah, more dmg but you have to give up too much for a pure glass cannon setup. Lazy does not mean damage only, it means a simple solution for most situations.
For your setup you have to give up Blink, Decoy and Feedback. Glass cannon does not equal simplicity though.

My setup is ment to be an easy going build with utility skills for any situation, that still got enough punch to solo content in a matter of seconds.

You love to melee? You know every encounter ingame better than the names of your family members? You have the reaction time of a next gen CPU?
Great I highly recommend you to run a 0/20/0/25/25 specc, nothing is more efficient for a mesmer aiming for melee.

You are a normal being who plays for fun and not for a GW2 diploma? You still like melee? You love the mesmer and want to enjoy encounters alive?
Good news, Lazy Kai made a melee specc for you that is forgiving and yet efficient.

Welcome to Kai’s Close Combatant Build.

Traits: 0/30/15/25/0

Dueling 30: Come closer!

II Phantasmal Fury: I brought a friend!
IV Blade Training: This is my sword. There are many like it, but this one is mine!
X Deceptive Evasion: Wait, I brought an squad!

Chaos 15: Cannon fodder!

V Debilitating Dissipation: It wasn’t me…

Inspiration 25: Medic!

IV Menders Purity: Ain’t got time to bleed.
VIII Wardens Feedback: I think this is yours…

Armor: While you can adapt to your playstyle, I recommend to simply start with Berserker.
Rune: Still testing, but as always, you can start with Superior Rune of the Centaur x6 for them being cheap and useful in PvE.

Weapon1: Berserker’s Sword/Sword, still testing sigils though. Most people have their own preferances anyway. If you are not sure, simply put Air in mainhand.

Weapon2: Scepter/Focus as standard. This will give you a ranged option, plus all the reflects and utility from your focus. Feel free to switch to mainhand sword or offhand pistol depending on the situation and knowledge of an encounter.

Skills: Adapt to the situation, a standard layout could look like this.

Ether Feast: Healing is sort of important…
Blink: Out of jail card.
Phantasmal Defender: It’s dangerous out there, take this!
Signet of Inspiration: Sharing means caring!
Time Warp: Let’s do the time warp again!

Playstyle:

1. Get close.
2. Cast Phantasm(s)
3. Beat the kitten out of the mobs.

You will automatically refine your gameplay over time, but for the start this will be enough. ^^

Leveling: Final Stage 60-80

Time to retrait again: Dueling 20 (same traits), Illusions 30 (I Precise Wrack, III Compounding Power, XI Illusionary Persona).

All following trait points go into Domination (I Mental Torment), on 80, switch to Lazy Kai’s PvE Build.

General playstyle:

Playstyle stays the same as before, but as you now count as clone too, you will do way more damage. Get used to distances and timing, as you will change to Greatsword (shortened cooldown) when you reach 80 and Sword itself becomes a secondary option.

Hope this helps. ^^

FAQ:

Why using the focus as off-hand?

The focus is the Mesmer’s swiss army pocket knife. I normaly only talk about the run buff, but it has the greatest amount of utility of all available off-hands:

- run buff
- cripple
- pull/knockdown
- combo field (light) -> Retaliation
- AoE with fairly long duration and great damage, phantasm will still do damage even if the target dies (as long as the animation goes on)
- defensive bubble, protecting from all projectiles

Kai’s Go Go Power Ranger Build

I have been asked if there is a pure ranged build with GS several times lately and yes, there is. It does insane damage from range and the best part is – if you have been a follower of the Lazy Kai Build – you won’t have to get any new gear.

Armor and weapon: Same as Lazy Kai Build (see above).

Traits: 30/30/0/0/10

Domination 30: Time to put some Power in this Ranger!

I Mental Torment: 20% more shared pain.
III Empowered Illusions: The life of an iZerker is short and full of pain.
X Greatsword Training: Our tool for sharing the pain, as sharing means caring.

Dueling 30: Power Rangers need to be good at dueling!

II Phantsmal Fury: The life of an iZerker is short and full of pain – Part II.
X Deceptive Evasion: Noone ever asks if clones feel pain, when you blow them up…
XI Empowering Mantras: Ha, no Mantra of Pain for you!

Illusions 10: No, Power Rangers are REAL!

III Compounding Power: Rule #1: If you play as a team, you will cause more pain.

Skills: We need to do funky moves, before we can share the pain!

Mantra of Recovery: Painkiller
Mantra of Concentration: No one can stop a Power Ranger!
Mantra of Resolve: I said, no one can stop a Power Ranger!
Mantra of Distraction: Secret ninja move.
Time Warp: Who pushed fast forward again?

Genereal GS playstyle:

After zoning: charge mantras
Attack 1: get aggro so the mob does not kill clones
Attack 2: clone (and tagging event mobs)
Attack 4: iZerker (and tagging more event mobs)
Dodge away from target: clone (and keeping distance for Spatial Surge)
F1: shatter

For tough veterans and elite mobs, avoid shatter and keep three illusions up as distraction.

As with every mantra build, your utility is restricted to them. While Mantra of Pain is pretty much a failure in terms of damage (and you do not want to use your mantras most of the time anyway), the other mantras offer good help to keep distance (which we need for max damage on Spatial Surge).

In PvE, single mobs will die fast, really fast. While this build offers less flexibility than the Lazy Kai Build, it will let you sit in the back and watch things die from save distance in group play (for heavy DE farming, i still recommend to go with the Lazy Kai Build).

Lazy Kai’s Leveling Guide: Updated 2013/06/27

Leveling as a Mesmer is – unfortunately – not as lazy as most other classes. So before you can get lazy, you will have to make your way to the pinnacle of existence, known as level 80.

There are several stages in the ascend of a new Mesmer, and I will try to cover the shifts as simple as possible.

What grinds my gears:

Armor: Power is what you want as primary stat. Secondary is Precision. If both is on the armor, perfect. Leveling is all about killing things fast, this will help.
Personal advise: Armor is cheap on the trading post, most of the time, you can get level accurate stuff for about the same coin it will give you back when you sell it to a merchant. Keep your gear up-to-date.

Weapon: Greatsword + Sword/Focus, same stats/advise as armor.

Leveling: Beginner Stage 1-40

Step 1: Level to 10, not much to explain here, grab every weapon you can use and kill stuff. Get Decoy as your first slot skill, Mirror Images as your second. Healing skill stays Ether Feast.

Step 2: From now on, put your first 10 trait points into Dueling, where you want to pick IV Blade Training.
The third slot skill is personal choice, I would recommend Signet of Inspiration.

Step 3: Put the following 10 trait points into Domination, with I Mental Torment as major. The left-over trait points will go into Illusions where you want to pick up I Precise Wrack (until you get a chance to retrait).
Elite skill of choice is Time Warp.

General playstyle:

Start with your Greatsword from distance, using Attack1 (Spatial Surge), followed by Attack 2 (Mirror Blade) and Attack 4 (Phantasmal Berserker).
Switch to Sword/Focus, get in range and use Attack 3 !twice! (Illusionary Leap + Swap). Time for F1 (Mind Wrack). Cast Attack 5 (Phantasmal Warden) and than Attack 2 (Blurred Frenzy). If the mob health is already low, you can skip Attack 5.

When traited Sword with level 20, things should die faster – Sword will hit 3 targets at once, so it is prefered for leveling as long as you miss the real punch of endgame gear.
Mirror Images and Decoy are both clone generators, so if you are short one or two for a full shatter, use the skills. Decoy is also an out-of-jail card.

Leveling: Advanced Stage 40-60

Time to retrait: Put 20 trait points in Dueling (I Blade Training, X Deceptive Evasion) and 10 trait points in Domination (I Mental Torment).
Switch skill slot Mirror Images with Blink. You now generate clones on dodging, should be enough shatter material without Mirror Images.

The next 10 trait points go in Domination for X Greatsword Training, after that, all in Illusions.

General playstyle:

Open with Greatsword Attack1, followed by 2 and 4, dodge to the target (dodge clones will always target the closest enemy), F1 shatter (F2, if F1 is on cooldown).
Switch to Sword/Focus, and finish off the mob.

The new and improved compendium is available, check here:

The Lazy Kai Build

The mesmer class can be incredibly complex and whatever, but sometimes you just want to run around and have fun. Killing things in PvE gets old fast anyway, so the faster the mobs die, the better. Now, if the mobs die fast because you use your keybord like a korean StarCraft player, good for you. I am lazy though, so here is my advise:

Traits: 20/20/0/0/30

Domination 20: Power is good, things die faster!

I Mental Torment: Shattering stuff is like one lazy click for four attacks
X Greatsword Training: The only weapon you need as a lazy player!

Dueling 20: More crits less hits!

II Phantasmal Fury: More dmg, less clicks!
X Deceptive Evasion: Dodge Clone? Lazier than using any skill!

Illusions 30: Dmg!

I Precise Wrack: High five (well actually four) clones to the face!
III Compounding Power: More dmg, more time for fun things!
XI Illusionary Persona: No target and no aiming needed, just go boom!

Armor: Berserker for all slots, we are too lazy to search for something else!
Rune: Superior Rune of the Centaur x6. More power, more bleeding dmg, runspeedbuff after healing, cheap? As lazy as it gets!

Extra lazy advise: Zhed’s Armor is exactly what you want!

Weapon1: Berserker’s Greatsword gets it all done, no need for other fancy stuff!
Sigil: Superior Sigil of Air for more damage, and it is cheap too.

Weapon2: What ever rocks your boat, you won’t need it anyway.
Personal advise: Go Whatever/Focus, now you can have the runspeed buff up 24/7, no more wasting time.

Skills:

Ether Feast: Healing – good, more healing with clones – lazy.
Blink: The lazy way to get out of trouble.
Decoy: “Nah, I have no time for that”-skill, or if you are in a group: “Who wants aggro?”
Feedback: Hey ranged mob, I’m too lazy right now, go kill yourself! I’m looking at you young karka.
Time Warp: Twice the speed, double the lazy!

Most important advise for lazy players:
Go Options/Combat: Activate Fast-Cast Ground Targeting!
Clicking twice for an attack, sounds like a chore!

Genereal GS playstyle:

Attack 1: get aggro so the mob does not kill clones
Attack 2: clone (and tagging event mobs)
Attack 4: iZerker (and tagging more event mobs)
Dodge to target: clone (and closing gap for max shatter dmg)
F1: shatter

Every normal mob is now dead.
Veteran, just go on: generate more clones/ iZerker and shatter.
Boss, if AoE dmg, go with rotation, if no AoE dmg, be extra lazy, avoid shatters let iZerkers do the dmg (looks like ANet mostly fixed it).

Attack 3 is mainly for tagging mobs for extra loot, no targeting needed, sounds lazy.
Attack 5 is useful if you feel funny and fight more than 2 mobs.

This lazy setup works perfectly fine in groups and dungeons too. So you may want to give it a try (ran FotM lvl10 with it without too much trouble).
If you want to tell me that if you utilize a second weapon to max whatever, I will be too lazy to read it.

Have fun – the lazy way!

Nerfs? Wait what?

I will be honest, no trolling intended:

If a main damage skill of your weapon combo is (unintentially) nerfed by 60% and you cannot see a difference, you may have never been playing seriously.
Maybe it’s not so important for you in arena style PvP, but it clearly effects PvE and Wv3.

Just try to see the game as a whole, not only the part that you play, if you want to make a general statement.

“Our goal is to ensure we have a proper progression for players from exotic up to legendary without a massive jump in reward between the two.”

This was written in Linsey Murdock’s announcment here:
https://www.guildwars2.com/en/news/linsey-murdock-unveils-new-high-end-ascended-gear/
before ANet thought it was a good idea to change it a bit. With some google skills, you may find the original though.

Yes and that progression was sticking ascended items in the middle! I hope its clear to you as it is to me that the progression Linsey was talking about there is about the amount of effort required! (exotic has same stats as legendary so there was no progression gab in terms of power, the progression gab is only in terms of effort required).

do you feel that ascended armor isnt enough to fill that gap?

But if exotic and legendary items had the same stats only the latter were much more difficult to get, why wouldn’t they just introduce a new tier with the same stats that was harder to get than exotics but not as hard as legendaries.

Why introducing stronger gear, why updating the legendaries, why all the fuzz if not for creating a gear-treatmill? Call it progression as long as you want, if it ends in a grind for better gear (and well, running FotM 20 times is a fair grind) it is nothing else.

Ah, my bad on the qoute, but you got the point. ^^

It has already started, and it will continue as more items of the new level will be introduced. “To fill the gap between exotic and legendary items”, the upcoming new legendary items will have to be better again. If this does not sound like a gear-treadmill…

Get the picture?

In 12 years of MMO experience, once a game started to head in this direction, it would not stop doing so. Like back in Asheron’s Call 2, everyone had nearly the same gear and the same level, but no, Turbine then thought it was a good idea to raise the level-cap to infinity and was splitting up the lil bit of community, till the game died.

This might not happen to GW2, but the point is, splitting up the community will end in elitism and the neverending hunger of some for better gear…

How to fix phantasms in one step for PvE/PvP

in Mesmer

Posted by: Kaiyanwan.8521

Kaiyanwan.8521

Here we go:

Give the casting skill of a phantasm an AoE check the size of an normal AoE (and no, I’m not talking about GS #3).
If the target is in the castable AoE, the phantasm will appear, if not make the skill fail (like out of range).
To be clear, I don’t talk about an actual AoE skill, just an AoE check for the terrain.

We now have fixed the buggy terrain, phantasms can no longer be casted “out of sight”, everyone should be happy.

Ah, and fix the iBerserker dmg bug pretty please.

Thx.

Most MMOs avoid one-time events for a reason. Badly executed, they will kitten off all of their customers.

Best example: This event.

Those who participated had to suffer massive lag, endless mobgrinding and many missed the reward.
Those who could not participate feel betrayed by seeing all those shiny items which were given away.

So most of the playerbase is now unhappy – way to go ANet…

What would make you give up the mesmer?

Nah let’s see.

I am not interested in arena style PvP, so I do not care how overpowered the mesmer might be there.

I play WvWvW from time to time, but now, most of the time I can just fire on the kitten door. While if I am defending from a wall, I get AoEd to hell. That iBerserker must have been a real gamebreaker.

I loved my Mesmer, even though he wasn’t the stronges PvE class. But hey, I was running GS glass cannon since I have been lvl 73 (GS patch) but now even this build is doing subpar dmg. Thanks for breaking a class because of some PvP issues. Nothing is more refreshing than to cast a phantasm to the target 5m away that is shooting at you, only to get the “obstructed” on the screen.

Nah, time to take a break from GW2, and if this mess gets fixed one day, I will think about if I will return or not…

Here is the point:

New PvE content is released → PvE ppl will return, run the content and vanish again.

Most PvE ppl get bored pretty fast by any new content and ask for more. That’s why ANet tries to lock them in the game by the new dungeon. Unfortunately this might only attract the Hardcore Pve crowd, and those will finish this content in a matter of days.

On the other hand, ppl who love this game the way it was promoted got seriously annoyed by the new introduced grind, which may – after the “fresh and new patch is not so fresh and new anymore” – result in a major drop of the former loyal costumers.

Time will tell, ANet will listen. So long this has become just another Everquest-clone.

If one of the group members is currently only at scale 1 difficulty, that will be what the rest of the group is set at until you complete more fractals to advance the difficulty scale higher "

So how can any one say players will not be locked out, this is not a gateing mechanic.

Talk about dividing your community.

People will hit a difficulty wall in an infinitely scaling dungeon. You will need to go back to lower difficulty runs, which will mean there will be a demand for low difficulty people.

Who are you kitten. In a grind, players go the most efficient way. They will do lower level difficulties with higher gear level players to farm faster. If you think they will just take “lowbies” with them, you might be very young in matters of MMOs…

Do you not understand how this dungeon works?

The difficulty will increase constantly, and is determined by the LOWEST common level of difficulty. 4/5 guys can be at level 15 difficulty, but 1 at level 2, the dungeon will then be at level 2. This means you will NEED lower level people for efficiency. You can’t just toggle the difficulty, its based on the a common level achieved. If you entire group is at level 15, the difficulty will be 15, and if you can’t progress, you have no choice but to take lower level people.

From the preview it looks like you can set the difficulty level lower than your level. So you can probably just set the difficulty on your own, as long as it is the same or lower than the lowest member.

A dungeon grinder? For hundrets and hundrets of tokens to get the best gear (to have an edge in Wv3)? I expected GW2 to be something else, sorry.

But Agony is limited to only a single dungeon, so the condition is already incredibly limited, and only kicks in after you progress to a certain point. It is entirely possible to experience the entirety of the dungeon without having to deal with agony.

Again, that’s the situation we will have now. But they already said they will keep expanding the infusion system, and that implies they will make it more and more relevant, otherwise why introduce it and a whole new rarity tier in the first place?

To provide options in end game content. It’s an option you can choose to do that won’t effect any other aspect of the game. They never said ALL future content will have to deal with Infusions.

But then why oppose the fact exotic gear receives an infusion slot and you trash the whole ascended concept?

You still have your options and they keep their word about the fact exotics are and remain the most powerful items.

Why make the hard work of a lot of people that have geared up several toons obsolete? That’s the base of the threadmill system which most despise and is going to put ArenNet against Wow, which does these thing a lot better because they had 8 years to perfect their threadmill system.

There is still the acquisition gap between Exotic and Legendary. You can get your full set of Exotic gear at 80 within a few days after hitting max level, but will take forever to get a Legendary.

Ascended gives players something to work towards between Exotic and Legendary, it closes the gap in acquisition time. Exotic gear is flawed, its too easily acquired. They wanted something that players in the end game could work towards getting as a final step. This in turn gives the end game some aspect of length vs. having the final gear so quickly. You get all your exotic, then what do you do? Sure you can explore, you can go for new skins but alot of people already rushed for map completion, and dungeons can get boring. This gives you yet another option to work towards. If Exotics took longer to get, they wouldn’t have had to add these items. Besides, with the slow trickle of Ascended items being released, most players wouldnt have an issue of obtaining some of it.

This would be correct if they would add ascendend weapons.
They don’t do so now, they just implement a new tier of jewelery and armor.

What’s your point again?

There isn’t any gear progression. The casual players got full exotic gear while only hardest of the hardcore got a legendary so they created something in the middle that would act as a threshold.Do research before you listen to rumors and complainers.
-Thread closed

Step 1: Check current exotic weapons, check current legendary weapons
Step 2: ???
Step 3: Profit

Don’t tell ppl to do research and call “Thread closed”, if you have absolutely no clue about itemization in this game.

When the difference between A and B is nothing, it is fairly difficult to put something in the middle to close the gap.

The gap was made up for the statement and is right now nonexistant. It is in fact pure fiction of possible future legendary loot, that might be whatever. This would add still another new tier, anyone sees a pattern?

“Our goal is not to create a gear treadmill. Our goal is to ensure we have a proper progression for players from exotic up to legendary without a massive jump in reward between the two. We will slowly add the remaining ascended gear items and legendary items in future updates to allow people time to acquire them as we add exciting new content that deserves exciting rewards. We will not be adding a new tier of gear every 3 months that we expect everyone to chase after and then get the next set and so on.”

Read this and stop complaining, they did it only to put a little progression between exotics and legendary, they are not going to put a gear progression and they are not going to put more tiers, they just want to make sure that between exotic and legendary there is another tier that fill the gap between them, that’s all

I can’t wait to hop back on the treadmill in a few more months to get my legendary britches!

A treadmill is a treadmill..ANUT just set it to a walking speed.

The funny thing is, there is no gap to fill between exotics and legendaries right now, so ANet will have to create an artificial gap by improving the legendaries.

Now:

Exotics = Legendaries

Future:

Exotics < Ascended < Legendaries

Some ppl on this forum have obviously no clue how itemization works right now in this game…

Sorry for my bad English. In my opinion ANet need make karma vendor that sell some kind of item (stone or something for 5-10k karma ea), and you can fuse that item and 80 lvl exotic item with perfect upgrade on it in mystic forge. After that you have ascended gear with same stats and skin as on the used exotic.

But why, if you try to avoid the gear grind by making the items so easy to get, why would you introduce those items. This makes no kitten sense…

What most ppl don’t see, is that we are getting 2 new tiers of gear in the future:

“Our goal is to ensure we have a proper progression for players from exotic up to legendary without a massive jump in reward between the two.”

So legendary gear will be better than the new ascended gear which is just the first step into the grind for the best gear. Otherwise this sentence wouldn’t make any sense.

Wrong

" Legendary items were always intended to be on par with other “best-in-slot” items. So fear not, all existing Legendary weapons, which are currently on par with Exotics, will be upgraded to be on par with Ascended weapons at the same time that we add Ascended weapons to the game. Thus Legendaries will remain “best-in-slot” items."

Don’t make baseless assumptions before reading the actual articles your discussing.

So what is the massive jump in reward between exotic and legendary than, that has to be smoothed by proper progression? The extra skin?

Infusion will split the playerbase as it did in LoTRO. It will cause guilds to split up, players to rage quit and friends to be excluded from instances. Oh dear, this is exactly the drama I hoped to avoid in GW2. Well, at least I tried…

As much as I dislike to post on forums (normally only do so, if something went tremendously wrong), I have a good reason now to make my first post…

Here we go:

“Our goal is not to create a gear treadmill. Our goal is to ensure we have a proper progression for players from exotic up to legendary without a massive jump in reward between the two.”

Who are you kitten? What is the difference in progression between exotic and legendary stats right now? Exactly, it is 0 (zero).

If you want proper progression with a tier between exotic and legendary, the difference should be, drums, 0 (zero).

This is just a blatant justification to cater to the gear grind.
And btw, gating content with a special stat pretty much killed the other MMO that was ment to be casual friendly (Radiance anyone?)…
