rang·er (rnjr) – A wanderer; a rover.
Ranger means roamer, and thats how i play my class, I’ve noticed that when the fights get bigger i become more useless because my pet just dies and i lose DPS. also, the AI just sucks, i’ve been yelled at in HotW p2 at the part where you pull the 2 quaggan champs and my pet just randomly walks 900+ units forward pulling the other champ. a well trained pet will NEVER walk infront of their master, didn’t you guys watch the dog whisperer?
pic is my pet not obeying me and a wvw gate going crazy.

Greatsword is a very usefull weapon IMO here’s why:
1.The autoattack chain) has an evade and decent damage which is always welcome
2. Maul) has nice damage and combined with the moment of clarity trait does even more damage. I’m actualy kind of disapointed Anet changed the 3 bleeds it used to apply to 3 vulnrebility stacks.
3. Swoop)is good for escaping, chasing or simply engaging(and it also has OK damage!).
4. Counterattack/crippling throw) blocks attacks from range and knocks back people who directly attack it so it’s great against thieves and other classes that use melee. Before the latest patch you couldn’t move and throw your blade at the some time. now that you can, i’m very happy with this attack because it makes chasing alot easier.(this attack also has ok damage and you can possibly open with this attack for the cripple to prevent them from running.)
5. Hilt bash) is a daze/stun depening on if you hit them from behind or not which i assume is a 30 degree angle just like the shortbow bleed and the flanking trait. the stun combined with the moment of clarity trait gives you an attack opertunity(150% damage on next attack) Hilt bash also gives your pet an attack opertunity and it doesnt matter if your attack hits or not.
Edit: If i use shortbow I use poison volley when i think someone is going to use their healing skill, quickshot to evade, make some range or when i think a thief is going to hit me but GS #4 is betterfor that becasue it lasts longer and has better damage. crippling shot is nice to prevent your target from escaping and the bleeds your pet applies after them is a nice bonus the stun/daze on #5 is great aswell (free atatck /o/)
edit#2: Back to your last question, yes GS can carry out a good amount of damage and has alot of utilities i’ve hit some glassy peeps for over 6k with mauls and counterattacks.

Because we share names i’d like to share my build with you, It’s a powerbuild I call the 1337 ranger becasue of the amount of vitality it has. with 3000 attack, 50% crit chance and 68% crit dmg you get a decent burst using the hilt bash + maul combo with the moment of clarity trait. With 2935 armor you get to be tanky aswell and with -65% condition duration conditions shouldn’t be a big problem anymore.
Traits: 0/30/20/20/0
Marksmanship: – None.
Skirmishing:
- Primal reflexes: for vigor(MOARR EVASION)
- Quick draw: faster SB/LB skills, A must for me, if i don’t use it LB feels very clunky to me.
- Moment of clarity: for the lovely hilt bash + maul combo
Wilderniss survial:
- Vigorous renewal: for vigor obviously
- Martial mastery: Faster GS and sword skills, more hilt bash and maul combo’s
It’s also very usefull against thieves, #4counterattack on a 12 second cooldown (the best counter against thieves IMO)
Nature magic:
- Strenght of spirit: for the extra power but I switch it out for nature’s protection every now and then which gives you protection if you take 10% of your total HP in a single hit.
- Evasive purity: I love this trait, removing poison/blind on dodge to make sure you heal with 100% efficiency or get that maul to hit.
Beastmastery: none.
Skills:
- Lightning reflexes: this skill will get you out of those annoying entangles most of the time gives you vigor, moves you backwards and evades, a great defensive skill imo and would pick it over protect me any day becasue protect me pretty much kills your pet
- Signet of the hunt: movement speed, always usefull in wvw(where i use this build) for chasing/fleeing running supplies etc etc
- Signet of renewal: i usualy let this sit on passive but i use it as a panic button aswell(clearing entangle from your party will be appreciated)
Pro’s:
-decent burst
- lots of evasion
- easy escape/disengage using stealth, lightning reflexes and swoop
- traits can be swapped out to fit pretty much any weapon.
- quite tanky(37% dmg reduction) and conditions will slide off(-65% condition duration).
Cons:
- lack of healing but shouldn’t be a big problem if defensive play is done right.
- you need a pile of cash to get the numbers right.
- needs food to get the numbers right.
Here are 2 links to the same build in diffrent editors, Have fun
Critique is welcome.
Note: the 2nd link is a build editor that isn’t up to date so it’s missing evasive purity and has nature’s protection instead.

I don’t engage ele’s near towers or keeps anymore, it’s a waste of time.
bump.
same same problem, 8 months passed and no solution or answer from devs QQ
@Nretep: I think it would make things a little complicated, Why not have a checkbox that would turn it off or on just like backpieces, helmets, shoulders and gloves?
because you wanted the legendary because of its visual effects. You’re not supposed to turn them off.
Yes, i wanted a legendary for it’s visual effects but that doesn’t mean there can’t be something wrong with it. The huge effects draw attention, I know they are ment to do that but it causes people to grief eachother. If some guy pulls out his twilight, you know who’s getting chased and killed seconds later. I’ve seen people take huge risks (running into enemy groups, jumping off cliffs and getting too close legendary defenders) Just to take out someone with a legendary. though, i don’t mind getting some enemy attention in WvW, I think being able to turn off the footfalls would reduce the grief. It will be diffrent for all the diffrent legendaries though, The footsteps on my Kudzu are bright green, Compared to the juggernaut’s footsteps, Kudzu’s footsteps seem like overkill to me.
You can definitely see the marks, I`ve often found folk trying to hide due to them

Ooh a warrior vid, haven’t seen one of those in a while, I enjoyed it
@Nretep: I think it would make things a little complicated, Why not have a checkbox that would turn it off or on just like backpieces, helmets, shoulders and gloves?
People have said that legendary footfalls are only able to seen by allies.
Some proof please, Before this becomes a thread complaining about ugly footsteps
i just made a thread asking for an option to turn off the footsteps :P but i agree with you, some legendaries need polishing, Kudzu’s string isn’t even attached!
I’m pretty sure it changed, the main stats and the stats of the’’upgrade’’ were separate and are now added together.
for example: the quiver on the picture has 30/30/30(main) and 15/15/15(upgrade) but your quiver has 45/45/45. Just some polishing i guess
Hello, I am a Wvw player that owns a legendary, I’ve noticed from my own(and other’s) behaviour that players with legendaries are huge targets. The footsteps are fun in the open world but in Wvw it just draws a line to your character saying: Hey kill this one.
Also, the footsteps from my longbow look like puke on low graphics.
So, My question is: Will we ever be able to turn off legendary footfalls?
Do you have a dwayna rune on your PvP gear?
Dont forget to fix to stats too. 13 defense and 4 power with no upgrade slot, It should be 97 defense, no power and an upgrade slot.
If you want to go full DPS with a risky playstyle try the maul ranger.

I personaly don’t like to go full dps, I like to have some defensive options such as bark skin , vigor and condition duration reduction. I’ll leave a link to my build here, It’s a GS/SB roaming build

It looks like you can get the holographic wings in quite a few ways so i assume it’s going to be tradeable aswell.
The other wings however, are going to be in an account bound chest you can get by doing the acievements for the living story.
Back to page 1! Here’s my GS/SB 1vs1 dueling build. It’s pretty effective in other situations aswell but it doesn’t contribute much to groups.
These are my stats and here’s the build for those who are interrested.

UPDATE: 2nd screenshot added because of best vitality ever.

Rangers were known as the most OP class during the beta’s, lots of people rolled rangers at launch not knowing they were nerfed. so, they got mad and rolled thieves.
in Tier 1 we have a lot of duels during NA primetime. Mainly JQ vs BG, we do 1v1s, 2v2s, 3v3s.. up to 6. We also have a guild [Duel] with your rank by your server name so we can contact anyone at anytime.
I’m in a similar guild called [TDS] Tyrian Dueling Society. It’s very usefull for talking to the other teams
I play on Aurora Glade and I want to know what the dueling commumities in diffrent tiers are like.
I have written some question down for you guys to answer, I’ve added my answers below them.
Q: At which time is there mostly dueling going on?
– On AG usualy during the evening.
Q: Where is the dueling going on?
- Behind the mill in between the 2 borderlands spawns, usualy in the least active borderland.
Q: Are there alot of people to fight?
- Not always (that’s why i want more attention directed to dueling!)
Q: Why do you choose to duel people in WvWvW?
- I duel because i don’t like the fact that i don’t get to use the gear that i worked for in PvP.
Q: Do you communicate with the enemy (giving them tips on which skills to use in certain situation or against certain professions ,GG’s, Wow’s, Bows and Salutes.)
We /bow to start, I /salute if it was a good fight.
That’s all the questions i can think off for now, See you gandara’s and riversiders tonight behind the mill <3

It has been bothering me for a while that there are no valkyrie stats on ascended gear (aside from the secondary stats For example: Bud of the pale tree)
I’ve been trying to mix and match with diffrent acessories to get my build right, but nothing seems to fit as well as a valkyire accessory because i want the crit DMG and the vitality. I was even thinking about getting defensive infusions to get my vitality up
Let’s hope they release them in the upcoming patch. Fingers crossed.
I guess it’s a bug then, I’m going to send a bug report
I use Signet of the Wild with Sick em’, Quickening zephyr and the river drake F2 skill while using sword,I can get it down in 4-6 seconds using this combo. I read that sick em stops working when using your F2 ability so it’s kind of worthless unless you use it after your F2 ability. people suggested longbow for the controls but i decided to try axe because of the bouncing effect, since that doesnt work im going back to sword. I should try longbow though!
I Run COF p1 alot and noticed that while im on the gate controls my axe #1 skill does NOT bounce off the gate controls. This disappointed me becasue there is another enemy near the controls, That means that IF my axe would bounce it would bounce off the controls to the flamethrower mob and back to the gate controls (Double damage!!)
So my question is: Is this a bug or working as intended?
I dont find it that strange, since a real longbow, shoots slower then a non longbow, plus its slow, and hit hard, compared to the shortbow, that has a fast attack, but deals less dmg/shot:)
Please don’t bring reality into a fantasy game, no one in reality can fire a short bow that fast and just to note a short bow has just as much penetrating power IRL as a longbow but a longbow has the range, it is all dependent on the type of bow and importantly the arrow used. They also have almost identical fire rates in the hands of a skilled user.
But none of this matters because it is a game and only takes the smallest amount of real life logic it needs for us to be able to relate.
People CAN fire bows that fast! Archery has been misunderstood for years http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2zGnxeSbb3g
I use heal as one combined with a bowl of saffron-scented poultry soup(100% chance to cure condition when using a healing skill)(CD 10sec) for condition removal, It has the same effect as healing spring in WvW for ME because my healing spring gets filled with AOE when i use it.
It’s not much but it works.
I bought 6 superior runes of Lyssa, put one on my armor and had 4 left. I double clicked on the warning, maybe that’s where it went wrong.
I checked my inventory and my TP history and it says i bought 6, I’m a little upset about this.
I’m sure there are people with suggestions for back item skins, I have 1 so far: A quiver
Any other suggestions?
For WvW i use full berserker with SB/LB. condition damage builds seem to be worthless on rangers because you have to be behind your target to make them bleed. that means they have to be running away and we all know you’re already dead when you’re running away.
In dungeons the condition damage build seems to work fine because you can find yourself a nice place behind the boss (I use TA gear with Prec/toughness/Cond DMG)
i use Signet of Stone for emergencies QZ for burst DMG and my 3rd slot is usualy sharpening stone for some extra bleed DMG and my elite skill is Entangle.
