It’s hard not to wind up fighting the same groups when it seems we outnumber other servers in amount of roaming groups.

Wherever there is a fight, all the roamers gravitate towards it. Get some more groups! I hate blobbing, and I know we all call out in TS when we realize we are rolling too deep and try our best to split. It’s sometimes unavoidable though

About that last fight before I personally logged out though, we did realize just how outnumbered you were. We felt the guilts.

I agree whole-heartedly. It may take a little while for people to realize “Zerging the center is bad for PTT”. However once they figure that part out and leave it to smaller groups to fight for, it’ll be wondrous.

And even if the zerg does decide to try and fight in that center, they will be forced to split. Smaller fights, even 10-20 vs 10-20 is a massive improvement in engagement scales in t1.

If zerging the center gives good rewards people will do it regardless of ppt. Maybe not on tier 1, but on every other server with people who do not care about ppt.

So far, all it seems to provide is stat boosts for a fairly large time commitment.

Sure you could zerg it up and spend 10 minutes grabbing buffs. Meanwhile the smart server next door is taking yo cookies from bay.

Imagine the zerg that’s already got your bay (and the rest of your BL) with even more stats! That’s what we’re really going to see.

Don’t know what tier that is. However in T1, the winning server still cannot keep control of EVERY point of every map. Zergs may roam through there every once in a while to get the buffs if necessary, however when there are actual things that cost PPT that need to be taken, these things will be largely ignored.

I’d just like to say grats to SBI for last weeks effort well done to just keep pushing forward and grinding out a good win. Not all of us on BG hold the views of the loud obnoxious minority, many of us appreciate a tough well organized enemy.

I would like to give shout outs to SBI as well. Even most of JQ. Shaddaran keep fiasco not withstanding, some great fights were had all around, and I am looking forward to this week.

Very nice little trick that JQ did tonight to take the hills. You guys talked so much smack on BG last week for being hackers. We caught you red handed screenshots, videos were taken. I hope everyone in the screen shots and video we have get you banned.

Truth. My group caught you guys once trying it, and you all fled. I just assumed you all were regrouping somewhere inconspicuous. After that, we had a full zerg checking for mesmers and found none.

10 minutes later, Lord room under attack with no walls taken. Maybe we missed a mesmer, but I highly doubt it.

Overall until that point, great fights and epic battles. Terrible that a few guilds decided to ruin it though. (SS and videos WERE in fact taken)

Very curious HOW, seeing as for as long as I was on (since 12:00EST) the inner gate was not ONCE destroyed.

Must have been a sneaky mesmer staying alive for 4 hours inside the lord room of a keep….

Beautiful write-up.

Haven’t been on the Guard forums in a while (been messing with ele and ranger too much), and am glad to see the crithammer build finally taking notice. Seems like just yesterday there were only three of us defending its validity in the sea of greatsword users and cleric healers. Now it looks as though those detractors have finally given it a try!

Great writup. Been using Berserker armor, knights jewelry, knight’s hammer with sword/shield offhand, and soldier runes recently (changed from divinity) for well over a month now. I must say for those debating wasting the gold on divinity, don’t.

While not a bad rune, the other options (soldier rune in particular) I have found to be much better options for this kind of build.

Sticky request as well. Keep up the good fight man

Save the karma for armor. Cultural armor T3 is not exotic, therefore you will eventually need to get gear to transmute it into anyway.

Go to orr and start buying the exotic armor sets so you can have some base stats at least for transmutation.

Guardians scale terribly with condition damage. Possibly the worst in the game.

And not just that, but mace is the slowest weapon we can use barre the hammer. So that means you are proccing the burns maybe once ever 5 seconds. Just kind of a puzzling build.

Trick to the fight on sub pass is simply hug the boss.

When someone is crystalled? everyone do some aoes and it’s done.

Whoever gets aggro turns him away, tanks for a few seconds, and when they are down, rez them up. Should be easy so long as you are all in melee range.

Simplest boss in the game IMO. Btw, his dragons teeth and spikes cannot hit you if you are within melee range.

Path 1 is a joke. Just have everyone hug the boss close, and whoever has aggro turns him away from the group so his frontal aoe won’t kill ya.

The person with aggro will go down, but with the other 4 group members on his face, rez time should be like half a second.

Update:

Just about done with the Berserker set and rune build. After changing out a few pieces of jewelry, I managed to obtain 50 percent crit chance while keeping relatively the same amount of defensive stats (give or take a few stat points)

With that, I decided to drop 5 points from radiance, and put that in 5 for the virtues. I still sit at 45 percent crit chance now, and find the added boons very helpful.

Much thanks to Brutality for answering these questions while I am away. Our builds are quite similar, and we seem to share the same belief in the power of tough/precision/crit damage builds.

4/6 pieces on my CoE set with the berserker stats. Once I get 6/6 I will be testing how well rune of the soldier works with going a pure shout utility build.

I would pop the Rune of the Soldier on my armor right now, but my current exotic set had all pieces of divinity on it. Hard to justify overwriting them with runes of the soldier due to the cost of Divinity runes atm.

We have on form of Condition damage (Burn) that does not stack. While it is useful and always a plus, Condition Damage as a stat is not something you should be looking to really max out.

This game is a giant mindkitten btw.

The best way to mitigate damage in this game isn’t by stacking healing or tough/vit, but by synergizing traits to give you things stats cannot (Buttloads of on demand healing, stupid OP Protection durations, etc)

And before you claim (again) that we cannot survive against multiple foes, just realize that most of us have no problem doing so, and even killing a few of them.

Would love to see your stats. For someone who complains about lack of survivability in every single thread, I would like to see where you stand and in what ways we can help. Unless you just want to complain and not look at what you may be doing wrong

Ah too bad, I joined the Order of Whispers so I don’t have access to vigil’s armor or weapons. But that sure looks nice. Is Berserker a crafted set? or the one you buy with dungeon marks?

Those are just transmuted to look like vigil pieces. They are actually just a combination of Karma and TP bought exotics. ( Can’t tell ya which ones as I don’t remember)

And Berserkers stats are basically anything with power/precision/crit dmg. CoE dungeon has a set of that, and Berserker pieces can be crafted as well by armorsmiths

Oh and as for WvWvW tips?

With my setup and stats (which admittedly is much higher than the average person in WvWvW), I have no qualms about charging headlong alone into 10 or less, so long as I have allies at my back. My usual fight goes like this.

Use retreat to start closing the gap.
Number two on the sword to teleport as close as I can to the squishiest target I can see.
Switch to Hammer, snare enemy
Ring of warding
Position myself so that when ring of warding ends, I punt back the enemy into my allies to destroy

Ring of warding generally enough time for a full use of an Auto attack chain and a mighty blow before a knockback is required.

In general though, that combo doesn’t always work due to dodges, blocks, evades, etc. So always be aware that you will have to think on your feet. Also remember you have a huge hammer that HURTS. I routinely kill 2 at a time or more before the rest of my team shows up due to the insane aoe burst of a mighty blow, auttoattack, mighty blow.

With a high toughness build like this, it is IMPERATIVE that you make sure you have valid, reliable condition removal. Conditions are the killer of my build (which is why I am excited to get these Soldier runes).

Seriously, low dps on the third chain? Its one of the best attacks we have dpswise, that and mighty blow. no3 crits for 2k alone, the symbol hits simultanously with no 3 and crit for 1k and if you have traited larger symbols it will hit two times. So basically 4k damage. Add in protection and retaliation on top of that ond ofc aoe. The third skill on the 1h sword maxes out on 2k with the exact sam build and GS isnt even in the same league.

There is a reason why that attack is slow, its because it extremely powerful when you land it and especially in large packs of opponents.

Single target, in pve, i kill my target faster with the hammer then i do with the 1h sword and focus and im not depending on cooldowns (zealots defense and focus skills) to accomplish it.

Why cancel it, just do it and then use might blow or any of the other skills.

Ofc i cancel it sometimes but then i do it with a dodge/mb combo. Cancelling it as the norm wont make you gain anything, it just feels better and has nothing to do with performance. That cancelling manouver is present in all the weapons btw. Anyone used focusskills while doing the chain or using shouts. Or aborting the last part of the chain to use a cc-signet?

The fact is that if you dont abort from time to time you have a l2p issue, and this is true with all weapons.

@Non in particular but almost everyone in general.
Gosh how i wish there where parsers for this game so people could get this in numbers. Half the community are fooling themselves when it comes to the hammer.
Search for alarox and what he has posted and checkout the dpscharts he made and you might get and idea of what the hammer is all about.

I’m just waiting for the day when people are realizing it’s me 4 shotting (auttoattack chain and mighty blow) their Berzerker characters and finally give hammer the props it deserves.

Greatsword heal is garbage. Zeal in general is a very weak tree unless you plan on going spirit weapon build it seems.

Tower Guard:
Don’t be fooled into gong the whole healing power route. Our best ability to heal is through constant application of protection boons. You will see that your health regen is loads more effective when you can effectively have protection up often.

Also, it seems the best way to “facetank” as a guardian in my experience is to synergize the abilities altruistic healing and empowering might together with high toughness and a condition removal. It seems like i get at least a 150 heal per boon i give to an ally. Seems insignificant, but when you add up just how often we give boons to allies it is really powerful. Spam shouts when low and health and you can go from 20%-100% in a full dungeon group no problem.

I tend to agree with the assesment that this class needs some form of reliable snare at least.

I tend to not have many problems, but that is because I make sure to use the new hammer trait, sigils of ice and freeze, and have a very high (compared to most others) crit chance so they can be reliably procced.

Without that crit chance though, I am all but useless to stay on people without retreat up. All the binds, teleports, and leaps in the world won’t help when they can pop their swiftness abilities and leave me in the dust.

As it is, this reliance on random chance and crit building kinda puts us in a corner if you plan on playing an aggressive Guardian

Would just like to add that I respect Testpig as well, seeing first hand and being a part of old threads on Tank balance he posted on the WAR beta site when it was only a few hundred of us.

I just respectfully disagree, and find I have yet to have any issues with survivability in any aspect of the game. Perhaps it will change as more people in WvWvW get geared. I do not know. I can only speak as to how effective I feel at this current time

We have a lot of issues in WvWvW. Survivability is not one of them.

And contrary to popular belief, there is a huge jump in survivability when going from using random exotics, to picking and choosing your exotic stats runes and sigils to compliment you survivability traits.

Synergy between set bonuses and traits is what makes guardians the most durable class in the game. Perhaps you should try and put some critical thinking into your builds

what runes do you use on the armor?

Right now, just runes of Divinity. However, I am working to get a full set of the inquisiter crit damage/precision/power gearset and pop in runes of the soldier for its tough/vit and seemingly amazing 6th set bonus, which makes all shouts remove a condition.

With it, I won’t have to really worry about wasting a utility slot to make sure I have a valid form of CD removal, and can then just run full shouts on shorter cd’s to make full use of Altruistic Healing.

First off, protection gives 33% dmg reduction which is like having 33% more health.
Second, Guardian isn’t meant to be a gimmicky passive tank based on health like other trash MMOs, you have a ton of active defenses that you need to time well.

When you get good with a Guardian you realize health has little effect, it’s all about timing/managing your defensive CDs, dodging and positioning.

This does cover some pretty good points. I would even go so far as to say that 33% less damage taken is even better than 33% more health — we have a good amount of constant healing and regeneration coming in and protection means that these, too, are 33% more effective!

Totally agree with all these statements.

As it is, there is no percentage of health where I feel like I am doomed to die. It seems like no matter what, I always have some ability up that can buy me the extra second or two I need to survive while me endurance regens, or my next aegi is up.

It’s an addictive game style, honestly. One slip up, and you are toast. But play it all right, and you are nigh-unkillable

Thanks for taking the time, been making exotic cleric gear sofar myself for dungeon running with my guildies. But itching to try out a proper 2h hammer build, with a proper gear setup.

No problem. Just so you know, I personally found a healer type guardian to be the least effective on my runs. I find I play the guardian much better as a Hammer spec who abuses the 5 sec CD on Mighty Blow and combo blasts everyone’s combo fields.

The almost perma protection boon you give to allies with hammer and utility skills doesn’t hurt at all either

I find that with a high amount of toughness, and skills to get rid of conditions as they are applied, I have no issues surviving in pvp and pve alike.

I still have to roll, I still have to dodge, however I have twice the longevity of any Warrior I have come across

Remember, protection stacking, aegis generating skills, and use of weapons like hammers which provide protection for almost 20 seconds on their third attack when used with Hold the Line, are all available to you.

You need to learn to spec with what you want to do. As you are specced now, real glass cannon.

For some reason, my health is showing as 15k on stats page but 15,455 on the health node. We own no pvp orbs on the server so that isn’t it. Page must be bugging.

The crit applying build will heal for more once you get a decent amount of crit (40 percent)

Any less and it seems too inconsistent of a heal with the hammer unless we are fighting two things at once.

Keep in mind, however, that the symbol is static, therefore its healing isn’t as effective in pvp as it is in pve. Also, if you find you run with a lot of melee classes, the might on crit is fantastic as they are generally always in range to receive the boon. The also proc the heal from every tick of the protection buff on the third swing of the main attack, it seems.

I find in both pve and PvP that I live infinitely longer, and provide much more support to my team by using the crit method. However I also have a large crit percent with my hamer (48 Percent currently)

I currently use sigil of ice on my hammer and sword and the one sigil that causes freeze on weapon change (forget the name atm) on my shield. Those in combination solve my ability to keep people in range in pvp.

I am aware of the CD, the main point was that with so many aoe attacks and 45 percent crit, at least one of my attacks on every swing almost always crits, causing almost every swing to heal.

I also find that I am getting healed for every tic of the protection buff that i apply to allies who are in my symbol. I can literally stand and auttoattack a keep tower through almost anything if I choose to follow the zerg, while applying almost constant protection buff to attackers using the ram and hitting the doors

btw, the trait setup is for pvp. take the 90 toughness and replace with hammer trait.

Replace with what hammer trait? There is nothing in the Valor trait line that pertains to hammers.
I really like Altruistic Healing and it’s usefulness is immense, I just don’t know if it makes up for taking filler traits all the way there and losing out on genuinely useful stuff in other trait lines.

The website has not updated it, but a patch last week gave a new ability which gives hammers a 50 percent chance on crit to chill a target for 4 seconds (45 sec cd)

Not only that, but the line itself gives two stats that scale insanely well with the build.

Toughness is always nice, and with that naturally high toughness, the toughness into precision talent, and the added crit damage the line gives, it allows me to build tanky and with precision.

Doing this I can forego some power and still hit like a truck due to the high crit chance and high crit damage

Prioritize Of the Knight gear (power/tough/precision) with runes and trinkets involvng a healthy mix of vit and more precision.

The point of the build is to crit. Although damage isn’t really the main point of the build, the nature of this beast means you WILL do damage.

With my current spec and gear set, 16.5k health, 2000 tough, 45 percent crit chance with hammer equipped. My 2 ability crits for 4k regularly, without added might buffs.

Think about it. Boons you give heal allies. You apply a boon on crit. You have 45 percent crit chance. Your number 2 ability has the radius of an atomic bomb, which means more things will be hit for a chance to proc a crit. In a dungeon, you will almost never die, even while face tanking most bosses.

The healing in this build is absurd. The crit damage afforded by valor is a HUGE bonus, as is the healing power and vitality provided by Honor.

I suggest everyone try this out. It really is a beast, and allows for some serious damage along with fantastic longevity.

(btw, the trait setup is for pvp. take the 90 toughness and replace with hammer trait. I run the shield trait in dungeons however for when I need that extra toughness in a pinch)"

So far, I have been able to run into full on zergs and stay alive while downing at least 2 people before my team runs in using this build but with these utilities.

Trash mobs in explorable mode are a joke, since the more there are, the more often I crit and the more healing I get. Bosses are a bit more difficult, but I still manage to facetank most of them with no problem by switching between blocks, blinds with sword/shield and VoJ, and dodges.

Suggestions, tweaks to the build?
