I too spec’d my first toon, an ele, to be heavy on healing because that’s my favorite thing to do.

Unless they’ve changed it, though, what sucks is that you don’t get rewarded at all for it. When I was trying to play support/healer, I ended up with more silver and bronze hearts than gold.

DEs should reward you for your activity, not your damage.

I have to admit, it wasn’t anything so much as arriving at Southshore, and discovering yet another area you have to zerg around mindlessly, that made me take a break.

I say “take a break” vs “quitting” because I’m just going to stop playing it for a bit, I’m not going to deinstall the game. I’ll log in to see Wintersday because ANet always did beautiful things with Wintersday.

I’ll lurk here, read patch notes, and hang in the guild’s fb page (it’s a holdover from GW1) to see what’s up. Many of us have a relationship with ANet, having played their awesome game for years and years; it’s really hard for us to let go lol.

Maybe one day I’ll play again, but I don’t see a solution to the zerg philosophy. Seems like an integral part of the design of the game, unfortunately.

to all of those that think that GW1 is better – GW1 servers were never closed. Advertise it to your friends, play it, keep it alive and hopefully it will survive for many years to come. I will attempt to do the same with Guild Wars 2. I’m not going to abandon it. I’m going to have fun in it and hope that it survives for many years to come. Everybody wins this way

Actually I did decide a couple days ago that I would officially go back to GW1. (One thing ANet did which was brilliant from the player-side, is no sub. So as long as the servers are up and going on, I’ll never deinstall GW… thank you for that, ANet!)

It obviously won’t be the same because pvp is probably dead—and that is sad, because I adored Random Arena. But I’ll be posting occasional pve activities on our guild’s fb page if peeps want to come on back and join up for them: Tombs, Urgoz/Deep, UW/FoW, DoA, etc. And in fact there has been a lot of interest already.

I’m going to log in to GW2 still and see what they’re doing for Wintersday, and I’m going to follow updates in patch notes and forum posts here and there, because I still care about the game and the company.

I’m definitely not trying to talk anyone out of liking GW2, not my own guildies, and not strangers on a forum. It’s possible I might end up liking it in a year from now. Never know.

I’d just like to add that eventually, we GW1 old-timers will indeed give up and go away, out of your hair and off the forum.

I’m not telling you what to do, but those who never played or liked GW1, and think GW2 is just fine, I’m asking you to have a little understanding. Please give us a chance to mourn what could have been. Many of us played GW1 happily for years at a time, and were strung along for at least FOUR years waiting for GW2 (I first heard beta was supposed to be in 2008). So please cut us some slack. You don’t have to, I’m asking nicely though.

One reason we keep bringing GW1 up is, not necessarily because we’re in the nostalgic mood, but to counter the claim that “vertical progression” is the only way to keep players playing. GW1 shows clearly that it is not. (Please note, I’m not debating whether the stat increases on ascended is vertical or just slightly tilted, I really don’t want to go there!)

The main reason is that I enjoy recognizing people from thread to thread, and name.numbers don’t help me do that as well. It also gives a bit of personality and personal expression to the discussions.

"Endgame" Re-re-visited..?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Meret.5943

Meret.5943

And so I ask you: Come, let us reason together. GW2 launched with no traditional endgame, and we cried for it. Now we’re getting it. How do you feel about it? What should the vision for endgame content be in a game like this? Do we still think there should be endgame content?

Instead of just complaining and doomsaying, let’s get some coherent philosophy going on.

-Paw

P.S.: “Endgame” is referencing here a gated system wherein only level 80’s with certain requirements met can participate, i.e. the Agony system.

Your definition of endgame might perhaps be different than mine.

Endgame in GW1 had no special requirements whatsoever, unless you were running a gimmick build like trapping UW or B/P rangers in Tombs. That was fun stuff. Then again, it was SO much easier to level, gear up, and skill up the kind of character or build people needed for those gimmick builds, than it is in GW2.

If the dungeons in GW2 were more user-friendly to begin with, and everybody did all of them, then there could be a Hard Mode/Heroic version of the dungeons. Again, no special gear req, just better communication and strategy than normal mode.

I don’t know about endgame pvp, there doesn’t seem to be any solution to the zerg-at-all-cost in WvWvW. Unless they added a completely new form of pvp that actually ends and has a tangible, time-sensitive reward for the server. E.g. winning Tol Barad in WoW gave you access to a dungeon for 2 hours, or like in GW1, winning Heroes’ Ascent used to mean your server has access to the dungeons of UW and FoW.

Just some thoughts.

Guild Wars vs Guild Wars 2

Meret.5943

Now obviously those are just figures I pulled out of thin air

I’m afraid that that is the beginning and end of it right there. There is absolutely no basis other than anecdotal evidence, to say that people are doing pretty much what they did in GW1.

In GW1, after the advent of heroes, people who knew the missions no longer had to stand around in town spamming to do them, they just took off. I know I did. People also spent a portion of their time in guild halls. Then there were the PvP lobbies, RA, TA, and HA.

You would never know except in your own guild or friends’ list, probably, how many people were doing PvE because everything was instanced. Now, if a zone is empty, it’s empty, the only difference is from server to server.

1. Casual, skill-based PvP (Random Arena)
2. Builds AND armors for every occasion
3. Heroes/henchmen
4. Guild hall
5. Vanquishing
6. Endgame pve (UW/FOW, Deep, Urgoz, Tombs)
7. Observer mode (HA and GvG)

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Meret.5943

Reasons: 5. Being impatience (Slow down and smell the roses.. Who said you had to enjoy the content at lighting speed, in fact you’ll miss it.)

If you read everyone’s responses, you would know that half the time, it’s that people want to go at their own pace, whether it’s faster OR slower, rather than be dictated to by a group. So they avoid the drama and just stay by themselves.

Frankly it’s none of my dang business why anyone would want to play solo or in a group at all times in an MMO. They paid for the game just like everybody else, they can play the way they want.

IRL I would actualy say work hard to get rewarded. But the problem is I play this game for fun. I have already payed 60$ to have fun and I would prefer not having to grind to have fun when it would be possible to create an option that wouldn’t force me to grind before having fun.

So you would have a problem in real life about an option that would allow you to be rewarded without working hard?

I am curious why you think an online game should have easy access to fun while real life shouldn’t.

*when i was playing gw1…
*in gw1…
*i remember in gw1 this and that…
*make this game like gw1 please..

Because ANet counted on the built-in audience of GW1 players for GW2. I would guess the majority of pre-purchases of GW2 were made by loyal GW1 players who believed ANet’s promises.

I did not think the game would be a clone of GW1, because that would be silly. The underlying game philosophy should not have changed, though. That’s why we are complaining.

I felt GW1 had a good balance, even at the end with unlimited heroes you could bring along. We had a strong guild for the big things like Tombs, UW/FoW, Urgoz/Deep, vanquishing and hard modes, but for everything else nothing held people back from progressing on their own.

I feel like GW2 is zerg or nothing most of the time, and I can’t get my timing right to get a guild group to help me finish my personal story. /end whine

GW1 wasn’t an MMO

So what? GW2 counted on—exploited—the loyalty of all the people who played GW1 for years under the philosophy “skill over time played” to buy this game. We have a right to complain, honestly, no matter how you want to define it.

Yes!

It’s what I loved about GW, no worrying about stats just focus on playing the game.

They really lost the magic from GW1. Low level cap, no stat gear grind, cooperative team play & different builds. Now it’s just one big hamster wheel to grind out the newest stat gear. No thanks, keep your game. I am done.

Not to sound melodramatic, but it’s pretty sad, isn’t it? For all the innovations GW2 has made, personally I don’t like it over GW1. I loved having multiple build templates and multiple gear sets.

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Meret.5943

The problem with easily obtained max stat gear is that once people obtain it shortly after hitting level 80 they complain that there is no endgame content and nothing to do. Then they leave.

GW1 had a very loyal fanbase for years and years with the “easily obtained max stat gear.” You had the freedom to get different armors for different builds/purposes.

My main toon was a monk, and I had armors specifically kitted out for pve healing, healing/protection, protection, smiting, 2 different kinds of solo farming, pvp healing, pvp protection, etc.

GW2 says, put all your effort into getting one set of max armor if you can. After you’re broke or totally burnt out on zerging all over the world, then we’ll introduce another level.

No thank you.

Should max stat gear be easy to be obtained?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Meret.5943

Meret.5943

No. Max set gear should be a goal to achieve. It should be based on the amount of work one is willing to put in….

I know it’s silly to keep comparing GW2 to GW1, but I will. Because the truth is, GW2 was so successful because it had a built-in loyal customer base from the original.

In GW1, you could get max stat gear at any level (there was no restriction), and you could do it for free by turning in drops to collectors, or you could buy a set for very very cheap. If you couldn’t afford max armor, you were doing something VERY wrong.

The interesting and elite skins DID take the kind of investment you’re talking about. But the stats were the same. That made me and my entire guild full of armor junkies very happy for years on end.

So if you’re wondering why people are upset, that’s why.

To be fair, I’d like to clarify that you did not have to specifically reserve a name. If you bought a GW2 account and linked it to a GW1 account, then ALL the GW1 names are reserved.

I had something like 15 characters across 2 GW1 accounts. No way I’m using all those names in GW2… so theoretically someone could be waiting on a name I will never use. :/

I agree with this. I love the satisfaction of seeing an area completed by an icon, also it will be helpful.

One concern for this though:
Will it include EVERYTHING the map has to offer? Or just the typical skill points, vistas, PoI, waypoints and quests?
There are other things like fog discovery, jumping puzzles and hidden areas to take into account.

IMO it makes the most sense to get the icon when you get the completion chest. The jumping puzzles are meant to be mysterious.

Only for the zone you’re in. The OP is asking that you be able to see some kind of completion icon for any zone, regardless of your current location.

It would not be a stretch, as GW1 had this feature.

I’d like to point out to those who never played GW1, that arena play was a vital part of its PvP world.

All those wondering about “gear grind”: In GW1, you could make a max-level toon with max-level armor and all the bells and whistles (except looks) that any other player had, at the character creation screen, in order to PvP right away.

The RA (Random Arena) was a place you could go if you didn’t have time or desire to form a team, but you wanted to PvP in 4v4 format. The queue was short, the rewards negligible, but the return was great fun.

In addition, it’s a no-pressure way to be introduced to PvP. I know my first foray into PvP ever in my life was at RA. (Do NOT ask me how it went! O god I shudder to think…) It’s where you learn the basics for more competitive play.

One problem, as some have pointed out, was when you would end up with 3 out of 4 team members as heals. In GW2 we don’t have to worry about that.

I would simply LOVE to see RA back again.
