Dungeon Speed runs can wait. For now just learn the class. It takes a long time to get good at Ele.

The best heal is Ether Renewal. Heals a lot, fast cooldown, cleanses conditions. It does everything.

Figure out which of the weapons you want to go with. Generally, I find Staff is the easiest as it’s the least complicated to play. Scepter takes the most work especially if you are stacking, lots of combos to button press, Dagger riskiest due to close proximity needed and needs a lot of defensive play to thrive.

It’s also interesting to get exposed to how other servers play outside of the usual servers I’m tired of playing against for the past several months. Ran across some people who weren’t able to instagib me, as is the usual when I am caught roaming in EB.

Some people on other servers apparently suck at playing WvW, or maybe those were the PVE achievement hunters who are checking out the new map. Regardless, I felt a lot safer here than I usually do in WVW, haha.

Need for Stability in Maps Oppresses Necros

in The Edge of the Mists

Posted by: Mochann.5298

Mochann.5298

“Practical Stability?” You just made that up.
An interrupt is an interrupt. Your array of Fears is far better than, say, Ele’s stupid Gust.
You’re also the only profession that has a 2nd life bar on top of an already huge life pool.
Be happy you have Fear. Most professions don’t even have it.

Now you whine about EotM as a Necro — when Necro is the one class that has the greatest ability to FEAR someone off the edge of the map.

You are one of the better classes to play EOTM with. If you aren’t able to do it — you’re doing it wrong.

My old skin: http://bildr.no/image/eko2LzFH.jpeg <3

Here is the new shi++y one: notice the low awful resolution on the armor and the flames especially: http://bildr.no/image/U2JQTC8y.jpeg

This might actually have turned out good if the textures and effects were more high-res. It’s positively ugly because of the low res pixellation.

Also the way dyes interact with it kinda suck; hard to get a good look out of it without going black and red.

Anyhow I asked for my refund. It’s very disappointing for sure. I’d like to keep the Headpiece though. I actually already use Feathered Armor, but the original feathered actually sort of looks better, again because of the low res.

Also, the sleeves don’t interact with gloves the same way original feathered vestment does. With original feathered, gloves like Radiant Vambraces go OVER the sleeves, with this armor the gloves are hidden under the sleeves, making them look ugly (you just have white hands basically).

I think I can make this work but I need my armor back to default states so I can mix and match properly.

sigh

Playing an Ele and a Mesmer

I think your style of game very fun. But I’m having some difficulties. Compared mesmers, is much harder to play elementarist. Staying alternating between the 4 elements, know the right time to use each spell.

Would you like to ouir opinion of you, it really is hard to play the elementarist compared with mesmer, and you think it is a class that can be very strong play properly?

Mesmer is a LOT easier to play compared to Ele. I have both, and have played both extensively. Ele is my Main, Mesmer is my second most used character.

Suggested Ele Builds for Map Completion

in Elementalist

Posted by: Mochann.5298

Mochann.5298

I used Glass Staff Ele to do map completion. Didn’t have any real problems except when I went underwater in Straits of Devastation. In the Orr maps I had to put up my Commander Tag to get PUGs to help me clear some champs.

The only really important thing is to put Sigil of Air. That’s all really.
Having Dagger Off hand gives you RTL, which isn’t that big a deal, really. The important thing is Sigil of Air.

If staff, spend time in Air, Use 4 to get swiftness, Use 5 + Arcane Wave to get more swiftness. Use Elemental Attunement to switch to Air to get swiftness.

And also use boon duration bonuses — spec more into Arcane, eat Omnomberry Cream, if you’re cool put Platinum Doubloons in your trinkets.

Great tip on Focus for channel points — didn’t bother but if I had to do it again maybe I’d try that.

Weapon's size scales by character.

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Mochann.5298

Mochann.5298

Which is simplistic game design. For me, a really good game will allow you to play a tiny character, and such character is harder to hit. But this will be balanced out by other racial characteristics.

That’s why halflings have strength penalties but have dexterity bonuses in Dungeons and Dragons. And the like.

GW2 is a very simplistic game, so these simplistic game mechanics suit it, but I always like to see a game with more in-depth design and options. A smaller character should be harder to hit, but have other things as drawbacks. That’s my philosophy, anyhow.

What is the more rare item to loot?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Mochann.5298

Mochann.5298

From rarest to least rare, from experience (so anecdotal)

Precursors (haven’t had one drop ever – through thousands of gold worth of items into the mystic toilet – still none.)

Ascended weapon/armour items. As far as I can tell, these don’t actually drop, even in fractals – or I’m cursed.

Rare dyes.

BL keys, which I’ve had as drops in dungeons, and rewards for zone completion, are easily a few thousand times more common than precursors or ascended weapon boxes.

Purely anecdotal though.

I’ve gotten Ascended Rings as drops. Ascended Weapons I hear you only really get from chests, as drops they must be exceedingly rare.

Don't Make Precursors Craftable

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Mochann.5298

Mochann.5298

Sounds like someone sits on a stack of precursors.
If not, well there are others that do.

Precursor prices are manipulated, so there should be a way to not support these guys.

So how do you manipulate pre cursor prices?

Their prices on the TP actually reflect the average amount of gold you need to buy enough exotic weapons to put into the forge.

That’s Kittenkitten. So you’re saying Exotic Great Swords and Staves 6x more than Exotic focuses? That’s simply not true. Doesn’t even explain why Dusk is much more expensive than Dawn, both of which are the same exotic weapon type.

The precursor prices on the TP reflect the “perceived” demand players have for the precursors.

How do we fix this? Well one way is to put a ceiling on Trading Post sell prices.

I want a precursor quest, not a craft

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Mochann.5298

Mochann.5298

If they have to make a separate precursor quest for each and every precursor and they’re all to be different….considering how hard and how long it should take, it would probably be a prohibitive amount of work.

Can’t be much harder than making a Living World story about Scarlet.

Seriously, why point that out? ANet is the game developer, they should care about doing things right, not doing things the easy way. A simple mystic forge recipe or Crafting with Ascended Crafting style grind is just that: an easy way out to provide “content” that is basically boring yawn-inducing farming. There is no need to ape the stupid time-gated mechanics of something like WoW; GW2 is trying to be its own game and the best way to do that is to scrap stupid mechanics like this.

Let Anet figure out how to do it right with their manpower. It’s a lot of work, sure, but ANet has its work cut out for it.

Stop the Champtrains!

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Mochann.5298

Mochann.5298

Then do so. I personally always liked 1 vs 1 against champs and the introduction of champ trains certainly didn’t stop me from doing them solo (though it much harder now to find a champ that isn’t overrun by the train before you even get half done). They are demanding, require a lot of skill and offer a great deal of satisfaction when you kill them (unlike doing it as part of some Hiroshima champ zerg).

Huh? What server are you guys playing on? Must be some kind of alien server if you are running out of champs to fight.

Seriously, there are tons of champs in the game and only so many champ trains going on. I’ve only ever seen champ trains in Queensdale, Frostgorge and Arah. There are tons of other maps with champs laying unmolested for you to shred to bits. Assuming, again, that you can even solo one.

The only champ I’ve ever soloed is this Svanir wolfpack champion in one of the low level snow maps (I think Snowden Drifts).

Bring back the -RP- to MMORPG

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Mochann.5298

Mochann.5298

To be fair there wasn’t even a lot of “character development” laid out in the original D&D. It was pretty much a book of rules about character creation, stat allocation, map /dungeon creation and combat interaction. Playing as a character that isn’t “you” is “role playing”. The depth to which the “RP” community takes character creation and collaborative storytelling is beyond that framework and always has been.

Well, the thing is, collaborative story-telling doens’t really work in MMOs because the environment doesn’t really react with whatever you are trying to do.

As you said, real “role-playing” as the TC describes is best done table top with other people.

Bring back the -RP- to MMORPG

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Mochann.5298

Mochann.5298

You’re in the wrong genre. MMORPGs do not really have “role-playing” elements in terms of “acting as your character.” They are combat simulators in a vast world linked with other players. MMORPGs never really developed to allow its players to “role play” they allowed their players to “roll play” — and in Guild Wars 2 people don’t even “roll play” as there are no attack rolls, it’s a very-action based combat system. “Rolling” only comes into play when getting loot, and the RNG screws them.

Nay, MMORPGs developed into action gear grind fests, that’s what they’re about, that’s what people like to play, and that’s what developers develop keeping that in mind.

If you want role-playing, get a singleplayer RPG from a developer that’s good at doing role-playing by offering great choices and letting your choices impact your world. Things like Fallout, Arcanum, oh yeah Black Isle was a master at these kinsd of games.

Or you go into a MUD, or you play something like Second Life, where RPing is the norm and not combat mechanics.

Problem with MMOs is that, due to the multiplayer aspect, it’s hard for developers to make a game where player choices really affect the world — as it could potentially ruin the world for other players. As such, we get very static worlds with rather linear stories.

Mike Z Interview - All Can Be Destroyed

I read in one interview way back during the Queen’s Jubilee that they entertained killing Queen Jenna, but she was involved in the personal story line so they couldn’t. (Don’t ask me where or who. I don’t remember.)

I can see non-story events and areas destroyed. Maybe the MAW or Fire Elemental or areas of cities that do not impact personal characters or the like.

That’s the sucky thing, Anet painted itself into a corner there. So we can’t see them really taking liberty doing things because of these limitations.

Suffering Through The Story

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Mochann.5298

Mochann.5298

I recently returned back to GW2 and I’m enjoying myself for the most part, until I do something in the Personal Story that is. My character is so bland it makes me want to strangle them. Show some LIFE! Get angry, sad, anything! Who was directing these voice actors?

“Ok, I want you to deliver these next lines with absolutely no emotion whatsoever. YES! That’s perfect!” -Voice Director

The world is beautiful and the exploration and gameplay have always been fun to me, but DANG that story stuff stinks. The human actors are especially cringeworthy. The only reason I find myself playing the story is for the XP only. And you have to play through your personal story to do anything (story-wise) later in the game. Correct? It’s been a while.

I just say, “Hi” in party chat and we go about our business. I actually work faster in PUG groups than I do in my own guild. PUGs tend to be very good speed runners. Guildies are typically not very good players (unless you’re in a speed run guild or some other “pro” guild) and are there to hang out and chill out on Teamspeak or Vent. They don’t have the sense of urgency that a speed runner has.

"Guild Wars" a misleading title

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Mochann.5298

Mochann.5298

The OP is right. The title is misleading like many other words put in-game. But this is just an example in the whole gaming industry. They give names to their games thet have nothing to do with the game itself. A mentioned above, World of Warcraft or All Point Bulletin, AION, Terra etc.

The question is…. and mini puzzle game too… how would you call this game if you had the chance to do it?

The more important question is: how would you have deisgned this game keeping in mind it is called “Guild Wars 2?”

If it were me, I would have tried to do the original plan of having Guilds in the game with guild halls that a guildmaster can purchase, I would have an “Eternal Battlegrounds” where the guilds really do wage war against each other.

I would stop all this tree-hugging nonsense, there is too much love for sylvari in this game and it’s deadeningly, sickeningly obvious.

I would stop with these big open world events that are (G+G+G+G+G+G+G+G)vE and not Guild Wars.

And a person would only be allowed to join one guild.

in WvW

Posted by: Mochann.5298

Mochann.5298

The proposed changes to critical damage gear aren’t specifically PvE-focused, but focused rather on the stat weighting of critical damage itself. We’re not aiming to make crit damage unviable, just to bring it closer to other gear sets.

As for the first feature build, there will be other factors coming into play that could very well offset the changes, including reworked runes/sigils, the ability to use sigils in new combinations (including 2 on a two-handed weapon), and the profession balance changes. Just something to keep in mind.

Before you guys “fix” critical damage, why not fix condition damage, which is in a far worse place:

  • Maximum Stacks prevent it from being too useful against bosses
  • it’s unbalanced against players as you can just load up on Condi Dmg stat and your other two can be defensive, whereas Power based builds need all three stats to be offensive ones to be effective (Power, Precision, Crit).

The fact that WvW is in a big Condi meta is proof enough that something needs to be fixed here. Condition needs more fixing than Critical Damage.

I actually bought a Commander Tag just to help the server out. There are times when there are no commanders on and things tend to go south from there if there is organized resistance. I got a tag originally just so people could rally somewhere and get some bodies in a ball.

Nowadays I’ve levelled up a bit as a commander, still mostly PUGs and not guild commanding, but I am on Teamspeak, work with the other regulars who are more experienced and know how to defend our towers, and I have had moderate success.

Don’t be daunted by not having commanders on board — buy a tag if you can afford it and use it well to help your server. It comes with its own rewards.

#ELEtism on Eredon Terrace

Commander tags - One size does not fit all

in WvW

Posted by: Mochann.5298

Mochann.5298

If you are a WvW regular, you should already be familiar with most of the Commanders on your server. Last weekend I saw a new commander tag in EB. I had never seen him before, and I thought he was probably a new guy who just bought a tag.

After joining up, a few minutes later I saw how he was moving and how he was talking in the chat, it became clear he was undecided, not really sure what strategy to use, and I knew for sure he was a new commander.

After we got wiped, he apologized to everyone for his inexperience and said, “Wow, this is hard work.” I being a fairly new commander myself, just said, “Don’t worry everyone starts somewhere. Good effort.” Because I know how hard it is to command (especially PUG commanding) and I couldn’t have done much better than he did.

There is no need for these extra commander colors if you’re just worried about someone being an experienced commander or not. Any regular WvW player would know which commanders are worth following and which aren’t. The commander in my above anecdote didn’t have a big following; obviously the people who are regulars also knew he was new, having never seen him before, and probably wanted to wait and see if he was a prodigy or not.

Thank you for not reading a single world of my post. There are a lot of things I feel need to happen (time since last login in guild info, for example) but when I put Quality of Life in the title it was meant to be about being able to play the content ANet just added without having to jump through hoops to have any shot at doing it.

If I were a Lead Developer during alpha.

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Mochann.5298

Mochann.5298

If I were the lead developer:

  • I would have kept something like a Trinity
    — Same here. I don’t agree with people being Ubermen who can do everything. CRPGs are about specialization — that’s my philosophy. The current “Nerf the Zerker” issue is a direct consequence of Anet’s No Trinity Policy. And I don’t necessary want a tank/dps/healer trinity, but I want something similar so that people are able to specialize. It doesn’t even need to be a trinity, it could a square or pentagram or whatever.
  • I would keep Downed State
I don’t know why people hate Downed State. Downed State isn’t Dead, Dead is Dead, and Healers should be able to “Phoenix Down” people who are down.
  • Damge heals supporters, etc.. — there should be classes good at Self Heals. And there should be those that suck at it. The reason why Warriors and Guardians are the most in demand class in this game is because they are the ones favored by a no-trinity system, same reason why Zerker is the most efficient set to use in PVE. All conditions should hit all monsters including bosses.
  • Adding additional modes to to PVE – I never though of it, I guess it would be nice.

And some other things:

  • I would have VOIP built into the game. This is probably not done for bandwidth reasons though. Makes me feel ghetto.
  • Precursor mania — I would put a hard ceiling for prices in the Trading Post. Then I would get Precursor Crafting/Questing/Scavenging done asap, because it’s ridiculous
  • Skill System — I would trash the stupid “skills are locked to weapons” skill system and let you slot in weapon specific skills to your weapon skill slots. Give us some flexibilty in the system. Anet keeps whining about how there is no build diversity, well duh that’s because all our classes are “pre-built” with this stupid weapon skill system. If the excuse is “it’s too hard to balance” the reply is “even with your current weapon skill system balance is a joke so there’s no problem.”
  • Traits — there’s not enough. Give us more. More points to use, more traits to choose from. That will give us more build diveristy as well.
  • I would get rid of cooldowns and introduce a resource like thief initiative for everyone. Yes, I miss mana bars. Cooldowns are lame. So is timegating. Guild Wars is not a monthly subscription game; it doesn’t need Cooldowns and Timegating.
  • Grind. Get rid of the godkitten grind. Grind, cooldowns and timegating are things born of the standard/WOW MMORPG model where they want to delay your progress in teh game so that you don’t finish everything in a day, so you stay for months and pay subscription fees. Since Guildwars never did that model, there is absolutely no reason to have these dinosaur concepts that belong in a monthly sub model.

For all of ANet’s “We don’t make grindy games” blather, they kept a surprisingly high amount of grind and timegating in this game. It befuddles me why, when they expressly state one of their design philosophies is not to! They tried to differentiate themselves from WOW, but didn’t quite go far enough.

Perhaps part of the problem though is the playerbase. Originally GW2 didn’t have Ascended Armor or that stuff, and was “kind of” true to the “no grind” policy. It’s player behavior and desire that perhaps steered GW2 to the grindy game it is today, what with things like overpriced items in the TP (and that is nothing but player greed, plain and simple) to never-ending clamor for “endgame content” (which I never quite understood) which prompted Anet to introduce farm/grinds to “stall for time” on these players who have nothing better to do.

Strange isn’kitten IMO “endgame content” isn’t necessary. A good fun game can be played over and over (like WVW for me).

Running Barrels to a Wurm is just not fun

Yeah I get it the event is hard… seemingly really hard. That is fine. My huge issue with it? Running barrels. It is NOT fun.

Why the hell do we all level up our characters? To do damage. ArenaNet took this away and introduced barrels (the same from the nightmare tower might I add) to force players to all do the same damage.

Anyways its no surprise a bunch of PUGs failed that particular event.

Champs don’t drop anything (I killed a ton) and then the pre-finale… you get to run barrels back and forth like some crappy fetch quest.

I don’t like the Wurm event. It could have been amazing. The Wurm from inside the tower was pretty awesome. This event is honestly garbage.

To defeat this boss you literally need 3 groups of three (one for each wurm)

1 group for barrels
1 for support n rezzing
1 for CC

Yup I don’t see a PUG doing this ever.

That’s exatly the point. Wurm was designed to be beatable only by a very coordinated group. This was stated in the various interviews and notes about this content.

PUG is never going to do this.

World First Worm Kill!

Desolation got the three worms down in first try!

Here is the proof. I was lucky enough to loot an ascended back piece as well!

Must be nice, the group I was in didn’t even get any of the worms down at all. since the timer was way too short.

Wait, you can loot ascended items now?

You could do it some time back with Fractal update. <— Answering seriously in case question was serious, can’t tell in this thread

Thanks for the Overflow fest!

I have no problem with Overflow. It’s nice to be in Overflow actually instead of not being able to access the map at all.

My issue was the long wait time for the event to respawn.

Your solution to overflow — reduce spawn time — fixes my problem, but doesn’t fix yours.
