the argument here is when during a siege all a mesmer can really do is pull people of with focus, requiring focus even though most builds don’t need it. Mesmers aren’t useless, but they have simply lost their fun for me, i played a mesmer for about 2months, not once did i not enjoy myself, but since the patch it’s just not as fun anymore. I didn’t play a BS dps build either. The other day i started my new elementalist and i had more fun with it then my mesmer now, but it could be because its a new class with lots of skills but my mesmer personally is just not really enjoyable, i’m not going to say this is the case for everyone but its just for me. The patch didn’t nerf my build, but LoS and the blinds and all that stuff is really lame now. I used to run supply camps with my mesmer and i would almost have veteran mob aggro, do you know how often a scout blinds you?

Can I ask you honestly here, do you truly believe that pulling people off the walls with a focus is the ONLY thing they’re capable of doing?

I’m glad you’re having fun with your Elementalist there is some great things they can contribute in WvW their focus whirl can defend siege from damage if you have several elems there to pop it. Meteor shower, it’s free bags with 1 button press when people are clustered up and stupid enough to not move and a good way to down siege in hard to reach places. I have one too I also enjoy it. I still enjoy my mesmer more in assaults if you wholeheartedly believe that we can only pull people off walls you haven’t looked at to many specs. There is more to tower/keep/assaults than dpsing people standing on walls however if that is all that style of play is to you then mesmer probably isn’t for you. Elem works well is good fun and pro at killing the kitten that stay in one place on the walls.

Now with everything i’ve said here and in other posts i’m not saying we’re perfectly fine in all aspects here but people are blowing it way out of proportion. There are some serious issues with “obstruction” even when things are in line of site this effects every class in the game.

Mesmers are one of the most useful classes in WvW!

I think the people complaining mostly just want to play it as a pew pew laser beams dps-only type of class and just ignore its utility & secondary effects all together. That or they simply don’t play other classes to realize how good we actually do have it.

People are complaining because it is really boring to be in a siege as a mesmer and people play to have fun.

Boring is so subjective I play in the exact same situations and I’m not bored and contributing a lot to what is going on still. Define specifically what you are or are not doing or are not capable of doing that is boring you. I bet you it has something to do with “direct damage” and not doing it… this is not the class for that nor has it ever been really it became the “flavour of the month” because of a few OP things in pvp and some people adopted the class only because of that.

There are a lot of things that can be done that do not involve direct damage(offensively and defensively) and even then we can still damage people on walls to an extent, smack on the gate or man siege. If you can’t do any of that you’re doing it wrong. I’m asuming you’re primarily referring to “towers” because in keeps/castle offensives/defenses we’re indispensable let your presence known that you’re a mesmer and there people will help you do what you need to if you’re clueless.

Yes unfortunately the duration from them isn’t carried over but with high amounts of +cond dmg it’s usually going to as soon as yours from staff drops. If the clones fire it off a lot in succession at least you’ll have several seconds of damage still there behind yours until it lands again.

Mesmer is not very good at defending. The lack of AoE attacks other than Chaos Storm contributes to this.

AoE Confusion, Ethereal Field Combos, Feedback, Reflects bait them and them reflect there are a lot of options that can result in massive AoE dmg. Between AoE 15 stacks of Confusion + Feedback and reflect on distortion(traited) I watched literally 8 people put themselves in a downed state(reflects and multiple confusion sources will essentially bypass 5target limits most aoe direct damage has) . Time Warp and roflstomp them (yes speeds up the stomps) It rains bags full of badges during defenses and there are lots of dead bodies. iZerker dmg has gone down but it’s not useless it can still make people scatter it can still hurt depending on how you’re geared and especially as a "whirling finisher’ for ethereal field combos. You can also AoE Blind w/glamours(traited) as a defensive tool as well. For confusion bombing you do need good +condition duration(pizza works for 40% and trait for 33% too or some from the power line of traits) for the confusion to last for several attacks and you need a strong amount of +condition damage to make that confusion hit like a truck.

During assaults however…. you can feedback on walls and on “SOME” angles you may get lucky with GS #2 and iZerker so you can shatter for confusion but most of the time you suffer from “obstruction” even when they’re pretty much in your face standing on the edge of ledge. In such situations I’ll staff for chaos storm on allies for Aegis and use my reflects as a defensive tool as I can while they beat on stuff. Optionally using temporal curtain I’ll be able to yank some fools off walls too. So you’re still providing decent support far from “useless” it could be improved a lot though as we have no reliable way to hit things on walls.

Regardless well placed portal bombs will win or lose entire defenses/assaults. That by itself is a huge plus.

.3 – Rogue (Supply camps):
Mesmer have good survival capabilities. A good Mesmer can fight in a 3-1 situation and live to tell the tale. The best job for Mesmers imho, although not as effective as a thieves (due to several reasons like that long time stealth). One of the problems is the lack of speed of the Mesmer. Mesmer have very limited swiftness skills that makes them a little slow to run back and forth to supply camps.

I agree to some extent. I actually do this a lot when I’m riding solo/duo or tagging along with the guilds thief group I’ll rotate between camps soloing them and fighting folks off. You mention the swiftness issue here.. it’s true it’s also exactly why I run Sup. Runes of the Centaur provides reliable swiftness. We still do this a lot better than most other classes because we can hold our own against larger numbers. When running “between” camps I slot Mirror as the heal and just spam it to trigger centaur rune 6 piece if i’m not using a focus and w/focus speed buff you’ll end up with 100% uptime swiftness by yourself w/the rune setup+1heal. Having to rely on those runes for the swiftness I’m not to fond of but it works and during peak hours you’re usually going to be doing it with at least 1 other person so you’re pretty kitten effective in this situation offensively and as some support.

Pretty much everything you said sums it up, but i just don’t agree that a good mesmer can take on a good group of 3 players, even if theyre not a party. maybe 2v1 but 3v1 is just a little too much for any player except a guardian.

A clumped up 1v3 is easy, especially if there’s a bunker guardian involved. Confusion shatterbomb will drop 1, 2, or all 3. Timewarp and daze / distortion shatters for your staking and they go straight from downed to dead.

Zastari knows what’s going on here well executed confusion bombs via glamours+shatters will kill GROUPS of people if you’re geared / specced for that kind of setup. It’s a lovely tool especially during tower/keep defenses for masses of loot bags & badges.

Avoiding dmg.. F4 is nice to hit when you know big damage is coming it that you can’t avoid. F3 will interrupt said damage/ability too and it also works on stopping bosses abilities [Those two abilities have long-ish cooldows though]. Sword #2 is obviously another one here timing it to avoid taking damage while dishing it out. Clone on dodge roll is a big one too. Don’t forget your pistol stun too. Quite frankly though as a melee oriented Mesmer F1 & F2 will be big for you too and you’ll want some knight’s/cavalier’s gear so you are not completely made of glass but still have good “oomph” to your hits/crits. It’s really all about timing and knowing when to weave in and out of combat between ability cooldowns too.

Sword/Sword can work too and you get a “block” ability with sword off hand too. GS as a Secondary weapon for it’s knockback is good for creating a gap between you and the mobs when things get rough. Staff secondary can work too for chaos armor & chao storm(apply aegis for blocking) as a defensive strat. Scepter/Focus can even work as a secondary since you’re in melee range iWarden is going to get more mileage out of it damage, you get a run speed buff for when you need to “gtfo” and you also get a “block” which can be again useful when you need to soak up a hit. Don’t just “only” rely on 1 weapon sets abilities thats why we have weapon swap in the game.[Unelss you’re a Engi/Elem no weapon swap for you!]

It is essentially a melee shatter build at it’s essence and it works out ok. However you have enough tools that you don’t need to solely rely on the shatters. Signet of Illusions is really handy here for giving your illusions more health and being able to reset the cooldowns on your shatters for both defensive and offensive purposes.

As far as a melee condition/precision(especially if taking confusion traits) build goes for sharper images go I’m not sure how well that would work out it sounds interesting at least and debilitating dissipation (random condition on clone death) could possibly work out may have to go with a Rampagers gear setup for something like that as a lot of your abitilies still scale off power and it’ll give you decent +condition damage for bleeds/confusion dmg. Defensive trinkets/jewelry will be a must in this kind of setup. Haven’t ever tried that route but curious if others have it may be worth experimenting with.

It’s true in a lot of cases but that doesn’t change the fact there is a pretty fatal design flaw there, elementalists can keep it up all be it not many go for pure + condition so there is little risk with them, engis can keep it up traited for burns on crits so can other mesmers and rarely if ever have it drop depending on condition duration+burning duration you can stack runes to get quite a lot not mention Rare Veggie Pizza is 40% extra duration by itself.

You will get your burning off a lot of the time but it blows when you run into the above.

Mesmer can work in these situations.

Glass cannon gear + shatter spam (illusion signet helps here) is still easy outside of timing things but you’re forced pretty much into that spec/gear to do it. iWarden and iZerker(even post nerf) can still help some before you shatter them.

The problem is it prioritizes the ones with the highest +condition damage even if yours is “next” it gets pushed back to the bottom of the queue by one with higher + damage associated with it so if there is someone always applying it(or reapplying)that has more damage yours will never burn essentially. In dungeons and small groups this “usually” isn’t as much of a problem but it does occur even in those scenarios.

As long as you’re the only one applying it. Stack for burn prioritizes the highest damage burn first then tacks on time for the smaller burns i.e. those with less +condition damage so if the higher burn keeps getting refreshed you’re screwed you contribute 0 dmg from it. The entire condition stacking system needs to be trashed so everyone is contributing equally. Also on that subject all +damage % buffs and debuffs that some bosses get (esp. in fractals) do not apply to condition damage at all again favoring direct damage … bleh

Increased condition duration does not effect conditions handed out by Illusions.

Mine cast bleed. I’m regularly able to stack 10-15 stacks with my clones. Do you have “any” condition duration or bleeding duration runes/sigils? Or condition duration from your build? Sharper Images trait is pretty much essential for maintaining high bleed stacks too.

Hello. I’m coming from a 80 Engineer(grenadier/rifle) & 80 Mesmer(hybrid/rampager setup) I’ve been exceedingly successful and I’ve had fun on both however I’m looking for something new since I’ve spent a lot of play time on both I’m looking for some more variety.

The potential of well played power builds in wvw / pve has really peaked my interest. I’m curious what good builds are there out there for it and recommended gearing setups for power/hybrid necros I’ve grouped with a pro hybrid/power necro that was just beastly in a lvl 22 fractal haven’t been able to catch him online to ask him these questions. The guy had good burst, good mobility, decent aoe, and seemed to tank like a boss while doing the rest of it.

He did appear to swap between 2 different weapon sets not just 2 weapons but depending on the pull i’d swap out between staff i’m pretty sure i saw an axe and warhorn, i know he was using a scepter on some fights but didn’t see that out to often and a dagger at some point too so I know he was carrying a lot of gear around with him and seemed to be using what suited the fights most. Seemed to spend lots of time in DS too his uptime on DS seemed pretty long from my point of view.

Fractal lvl 20+ Builds

I’m just curious how well some peoples builds are holding up in the lvl 20+ Fractals. Glass cannon grenadier seems to barely make it with how some of the damage scales if you failing to evade properly and sometimes lag/latency gets in the way.

10/30/0/0/30 Melee Power shatter build
Just reached level 20 with a more of less “full” Berserker setup but now I wonder how I should balance my gear to get more defensive stats..

I’d say your best bet would be to probably swap out your runes(dolyaks perhaps,) and some if not all of your jewelry(knight’s or soldier). You’ll lose some damage but you don’t do any when you’re dead. It depends on what type of damage you find that is killing you in some causes more vitality may be the better bet but if you’re dying to heavy hits/burst dmg then toughness would be the better route to go.

Mesmer build for FotM lvl 20+

20/20/0/0/30 – Rampagers Gear + Undead Runes + Rabid for condition dmg (or Knight’s for harder hitting lasers) Jewlery. This will give you strong condition damage a fair bit of a toughness and will not be skimping out on some power and the ever so much needed precision. Staff/GS setup. GS+3x clones will easily break 12+ bleeds by itself (from bleed/crit trait) while still having good direct damage and decent bleed ticks. Primarily I’ll use GS when I have ethereal fields up for the Whirling Finisher from iZerker and Projection finisher from #2. When you have power from this setup & staff keeping 1 Warlock + 2 Staff clones up is a pretty good call as the warlock scales with “both” power and total number of unique conditions. Shatters causing confusions will still hit fairly hard especially if you weave in and out of melee range for you being the 4th shatter.

Alternatively with that build you can take Glamours cause confusion on entrance/exit, Glamours Cause Blindness (pro utility in fractals for keeping yourself and others alive) and cause confusion on blindness so you can get quite a bit of confusion damage on some of those quick hitting Fractal mobs. It helps takes the edge off the damage being a bit subpar.

The damage on trash won’t match a beserker’s setup but on vet mobs and bosses it’ll be on par and surpass it in a lot of cases where you have to do a lot of evasion and can’t keep direct damage up as oppose to being mobile with your conditions still doing dmg.

Alternatively on the build like yours 0/20/20/0/30(i sometimes run this too) will still work out well but the extra +20% condi duration is nothing to scoff at as well as the trait to cripple foes on clone death, great for when you have to kite. Having said that the 20% reduction on the staff cooldowns can be a lifesaver getting off that extra chaos storm to proc aegis. Deffinitely a play style choice.

Just adjusting your gear a bit I think will help a lot.

I’d say it’s more helpful in the harder dungeons and some fractals than other places. It also depends on the quality if group you’re in and how well you are at avoiding damage too. It takes a lot of toughness for it to be worthwhile and I wouldn’t bother with it at all until you’re able to get good gear i.e. 60+

Arguably the warlock from Staff does more damage than the amount of conditions you can feasibly stack with the staff that it’s still better to build for direct damage to boost that.

iWarlock damage scales by 10% per each type of unique condition on the target. More condition types more damage.

Same with the Illusion bleed on crit. Better off building for base damage than proc’d damage.

If you’re at around 50% crit the bleed on crit trait is going to be firing off about every 1-2 seconds a mesmer set up for conditions can easily push 15-22 bleed stacks solo depending on condition duration gear without having to even use time warp.

Condition builds and setups can actually do extremely well and be very durable with rabid gear (precision+toughness+condition damage)

Using your F2 shatters and making good use of ethereal field combos you can get 10-15 stacks of confusion going as well which can fairly hard as well with a condition setup.

In the end it is viable it requires a lot more work from the player though to work it effectively though especially when compared to a standard power/precision/crit GS/Shatter build.

How many 80’s do you have? try to get another 80’s (Elementalist, Warrior, Thief…) with similar gears as your Mesmer and see it for yourself. With the same effort, you will get much more loots as playing with other professions. That’s the point of this post.

As far as my other 80s go aside from the mesmer I have a Engineer(grenadier spec) & Elementalist(set up for aoe)

I don’t know about much more thats a bit of an exaggeration but it is EASIER for sure with less setup time. AoE even before the dmg reduction on iZerker was kind of weak. You’re basically pigeonholed into one of the shatter variants and chaining shatters back to back and using aoe confusion/maximizing ethereal fields and reflects.

I certainly think that the Mesmer needs improvement in AoE for sure however those folks that say its impossible to keep up or even do are just wrong. It sucks being forced into a spec you don’t like to play just to be able to accomplish the goal though.

a confusion / condition spec works wondrously people suicide en masse between reflects + confusion. toughness+precision+condition gear primarily. it has turned out to be very robust in terms of survival, killing people, and receiving enough credit for it to rain loot bags during a tower/keep defense

Gold medal and XP credit is not the same as getting bag of loot. My Mesmer got XP credit and Gold medal in most group events but my Warrior and Thief got MUCH more bag of loot! That was OP’s point and it was true that Mesmer has to work extremely hard for A bag of loot while other profession if spent that much of effort could harvest/enjoy MUCHO bag of loot!

… I have no difficulty getting loot at all as condition/confusion setup i do shatter frequently as well.. if people are having a hard time they’re probably just auto attacking and wishing it was a auto-magical i win button

All be it having to rely on shatters to do most of the work is a pain in the kitten works none the less.

I have no problems tagging mobs in events. I’m a condition/confusion build. I spread ae confusion and conditions around like crazy get plenty of XP credit as well as a Gold medal every time without fail. Make use of your combo fields.

(*) Deceptive Evasion is also bugged, since the spawned clones will attack anything near at random instead of assisting on your target.

Just to clarify on what is happening here. Clones spawned from Deceptive Evasion will attack the nearest target.

GS condition is about bleeds from clones, forget everything else.

The bleed strength is decent. I wouldn’t recommend it over staff for gear with no power at all (like the OP’s Rabid). With Rabid staff will outdamage the GS, and of course staff has much more utility too, especially after the zerker’s nerfs.

You would mainly use the GS as the alternate weapon for AoE dmg from ethereal field with finishers. The whirling finisher(izerker counts as whirl finish) and bouncing projectile finisher from sword #2 it’s good for spreading mass aoe confusion then F2 for an addition 6 confusion. You’ll usually some bleeds in too. You can then switch back to staff get your clones up and just use staff 1 auto attack bounce to finish it all off.

Has anyone else seen this since the patch?
I was in a 5v5 hot join and a mesmer was teleporting 10 feet every single second.

This sounds like Phase Retreat. Staff #2, it moves you away from your target 8s cooldown if traited.. this is not a new ability you’re probably just not use to fighting the Staff mesmers since the GS changes you’re seeing a lot more Staff/Cond builds in pvp. Other than that there are other abilities that will “visually” seem like that are. Blink of course and clone spawn on dodge and decoy invis+clone spawn. You’re probably getting confused when they’re using all of these together at once.

What stats are generally used for WvW Confusion builds other than Condition? Is it Power or Precision?

There are a couple variations I’ve see on the WvW confusion builds ones that take the blind traits on glamours and those that don’t. I’d go Cond+Toughness+Vitality if you don’t take the blind traits really. Cond+Power+Vitality gear if you do since they’ll be missing more w/the glamour blinds. IMHO someone more experienced with it may want to chime in.

With a lot of condition duration gear, the crit bleed trait, and proc bleed sigil up you keep up a lot of bleeds with precision+condition gear. However you miss out on burn from staff which can be a lot of our condition damage. With that said I’m currently Staff/Scepter right now however last night in PvE Fractals I was Staff/GS(for extra aoe) . On a boss with staff I was maintaining about 13-15 bleeds (by keeping staff clones alive) and burn was up pretty much consistently as well. I swapped over to GS accidently during the fight and popped zerker and 1 sword clone and left 1 staff clone alive I shot up to 22 bleeds maintained it for about 8-10seconds then it started to drop swapped back over to staff got my clones x3 back up and maintained 15+burn again.

I have very poor crit in my current setup but was still able to get a sustained increase for a while so I think the possibility/viability is there but you’ll lose other conditions from staff on the bright side you gain some burst.

Another question… what use is Shatters add Vulnerability trait? Vulnerability doesn’t improve cond damage (or does it???).

Very good question, never tested this after the game went live. I know in beta it didn’t improve condition damage at all. Has anyone tested this recently?

Thanks for all the replies great to know this is extremely effective in wvw/pvp. Sounds like I may end up being forced into a power build in pve for competitive damage though all be it I love cond spec and keeping 3x staff clones alive for the extra cond. from an aesthetic POV. I’m hitting about 15 bleeds in these situations alone so if I’m grouped with any other condition specs we hit the 25 stack wall to easily.

If you want good aoe damage go for a shatter build. Berserker still does good aoe damage it’s just not as inflated as it was, the damage will be increased again because that change in damage was not intentional. Do not forget warden can do some decent damage too just plop it in the middle of a group of mobs let it do its thing then shatter it.

Be careful if you’re listening to the whiners. The nerf (unintentional) to the damage hasn’t made GS useless at all GS Shatter builds are still going to be the best damage, we lose out on some aoe due to the damage on the phantasm but it’s not the end of the world by any means. People are just blowing it way out of proportion because well it’s the forums it’s where all the kids come to cry.

Edit: iMage is bad, the #4 is also bad although you could use chaos torm + its blast finisher. I’ll try and make it work since I haven’t use the #4 on the sword as often.

iMage damage was doubled this patch still may be lacking. Torch #4 is handy for the blast finisher but it makes a handy tool for dropping agro in bad situations but I’ll consider switching to something else. What you’re doing sounds a lot like what I’m aiming for though confusion/shatter with decent condition damage. Seems to still do well in dungeons aoe with shatteres and extra bounce isn’t to bad either.

Sadly the burns seem to be the strongest damage condition wise it scales so well.

Well the nice thing about this build with a proper mix of gear is the shatters still hit very hard, it lacks the additional crit bonuses that berserker would provide but with power+precision+condition damage gear(rampagers) it still hurts especially if i swap out the +15% dmg from clones for +20% on mind wrack. I occasionally see my confusions hit for 1k + and my gear is garbage still and i’m not even 80 on my mesmer and my bleed is around what yours is right now with veggie pizza buff.

Again the goal would be maximizing confusion application. Staff would be primary weapon, scepter/torch(iMage applies confusion) for secondary and using clones to assist in condition applications as well as abusing them for the shatters for additional confusion applications.

I’m curious if there is anyone out there that has tested to any extent a heavy confusion focused build since we have a lot of abilities for confusion application and ways to increase it’s duration 33%.. “all shatter skills inflict confusion” via trait getting doubling the amount on F2, confusion via ethereal combo fields, via scepter 3, confusing combatants trait (aoe confusion on clone death, also triggered if you simply create another clone if you’re at max 3 all ready) and traited glamour fields causing confusion as well.

I know in some situations relying on staff conditions isn’t good enough due to stacking limitations but given confusion is rarely at max and gets consumed it seems speccing specifically for it along with a staff/condition build may help bridge the gap damage wise in some of those situations given that confusion scales with condition dmg.

Anyone experiment with this kind of setup much in both pve & wvw?

Our real “AoE” used to be the Phantasmal Berzerker. Now we have none.

Oh please… /facepalm It still works perfectly fine. The damage on large amounts of mobs is smaller but that nerf was confirmed to not be “intentional” and they will be adjusting the damage on it.

In WvW and other niche situations where there is a lot of ranged / projectile damage do not forget your reflects <- people will suicide on them a lot.

Do not forget to make use of your combo fields even if someone else aoe’s in side them it’ll trigger aoe confusion which can and will add a lot of extra damage as well to multiple targets.

You’re pretty much pigeon-holed into a GS/Shatter build for strong aoe, with dodge clones, GS abilities, staff as alt weapon illusions/phantasm + mirror images & signet of illusions you can pretty much chain shatters non stop for aoe damage but that is a very specific build/configuration to be able to do good aoe …other builds are kind of screwed in that regards right now which is sad.

Speccing for the extra “bounce” trait helps too. Isn’t to bad for a condition staff build too for aoe condition spreading.

when you unlock tier 2 traits, why not give mantras a shot with restorative mantras on the inspiration tree?

You’ll come to love the sustainability with the endless heals

Mantra healing builds are actually very nice with good healing gear it’s a very large amount of AoE healing now BEFORE this patch it was absolutely insane unlimited target aoe healing it’s now limited to 5 targets the radius seems fairly large though but spamming 3k + heals can really help during a keep assault and during portal bombing. It won’t keep anyone topped off but it can really make the difference between a win or loss giving someone a few extra seconds to scatter and get out of aoe etc..

I occasionally run a pure reflect + heal build and still find myself able to contribute a lot in WvW.

TBH iZerker was IMO never a super dooper contribution to keep fighting.

It allowed you to effectively take out siege in places that were difficult or impossible to otherwise reach. This is a very big factor in tower/keep/castle assaults and defenses. Meteor shower can from eles can still help here but saying that it didn’t have a major contribution to keep fighting is a joke.

This is what i love about Rift. They have a Public test server to test this stuff out with anyone.

It’s a very common practice in the mmo industry and very beneficial to the players and company as a whole why ANet doesn’t choose to do this is a mystery.

I’m not a ranger but whenever I’ve been in groups wanting to do speed runs through anything they always flat out deny rangers most of the time and I’ve seen them kicked as well which is pathetic.. I understand there are some issues but that damage isn’t “THAT” bad to really warrant it but you still have a lot of people out there that will still min/max.

So, the scaling seems very close, not to mention the condition damage.

What you need to take into consideration on the scaling issue is it’s base damage and the fact that you receive 0 stats / abilities from you’re weapon and sigil when it’s equipped which causes it to fall further behind. If you go 100% glass cannon stacking heavy extra crit damage it’ll perform pretty well but given it’s short-range lot of the time with that gear setup it’s suicide even w/juggernaut traited.

You’re better stacking power if you want to main-weapon FT even with the on-crit condition abilities they are not going to amount to much unless you go 100% condition build and even then consideration the life span and duration/stacking issues with conditions you’re going to be hurting yourself dmg wise.
