This probably isn’t going to be a popular statement with a lot of you, but I’m all for getting the GvG comments out of the WvW forums. It’s pretty much irrelevant in a WvW matchup thread, although it does bring a certain amount of drama to the table. The drama I don’t mind, but all the high fives, GG’s, ect., ect. are quite boring.
That being said, I doubt Anet will giving anyone a GvG format and/or map to play on. They’ve got Spvp tournaments and you have the ability to PAY for your own areas to fight in. There’s your level playing field and your GvG format. I can almost guarantee that would be Anet’s standpoint as well. I’d be very surprised if they actually did create an actual GvG arena for free.

Phantom I think that it would be cool to have a big coliseum for the gvg to take place in..
unfortunately the arena in JP is too easily mob-trolled, rock trolled, and too small to utilize veils inside of. Not to mention it would totally block JPers from getting their chests :P
It has to be decent size, like a little bigger than the radius of inner SM walls in my opinion.

I think it would attract ton of teams from other games over here if there was a system implemented.
I would love for an answer from ANet at least, if it’s something that is never going to happen- put our minds at rest and let us know.

I might be biased but I think it will come in the future.

I consider 15v15 the most fun size, 20v20 is good too.

25v25 feels way more zergy than 20’s for some reason, 10v10 is acceptable but not preferred personally, leaving 5v5 to be considered a roamer’s death match.

It’s guild vs guild. Slap together a team and go for it.

EP still looking for GvG’s this week, open to any challengers. Pref 15v15- but 20 can be managed with notice

I am pretty sure at this point, the majority of us are familiar with the mysterious orange swords in the Borderlands maps south of the southern most camp and what those represent.

For those who aren’t: These are pre-organized fights with predetermined even numbers between two guilds from different servers. Usually 20v20 or 15 v 15, rarely more, rarely less.

There are a lot of conflicting ideas, opinions and attitudes towards these organized fights- and both pro and con sides have their understandable reasons.

A lot of positivity towards these events for many reasons. It helps players see the true nature of field fighting in this game- team work and combo field mechanics shining brighter than ever in these fights and the effects demonstrated quite clearly in these medium scale engagements. (Relative term “medium scale” in comparison to most zerg clashes in wvw)
The competitive nature sparks new interest in the burnt out WvW veterans (myself included) which pushes us to continue playing this game.
The new match up systems which put us in tough spots with blow out matches at times can and has led to the burn out of many players. (This topic is an entirely different paragraph so lets stay on point) GvG has helped a lot of players stick with WvW combat even through these kind of weeks. The competitive nature can’t be stopped by a score anymore, these weeks give even more reason for guilds to show up and show their skills against “higher tier” guilds. Many times you will be surprised by the “lower tier” guilds who can faceroll guilds from the upper WvW score bracket.
Not to mention the amount of people who want to see the videos, or watch the matches go down themselves is at an all time high.
This is the kind of competitive nature you can’t stop, no matter how hard you try.

The attitude against GvG is not without reasons.
That it consumes queue slots in the more populated servers- allowing the 3rd server to possibly reset keeps and towers with less opposition, knowing that at least 15-20 from each of the other two servers are engaged across the map.
That these guilds could be doing something more productive for PPT.
Or simply “this is not what WvW is meant for, go Spvp for gvg”.

So much head bashing on forums about this argument, it’s disappointing.

As a supporter and participant of GvG, and a WvW veteran I look at this situation objectively and understand both sides.
..and I can tell you that there is common ground to be stood on.

First, the Spvp argument. Anyone who Spvp’s and plays in WvW can tell you that the builds are not the same. The stats cannot be replicated- and it is an entirely different feel. Second, if guilds wanted to 10 v 10 or 8 v 8 or 5 v 5, maybe we would use SPvP. There is a reason that the most common size fights are 15/20 on each side. But even still, the builds are not the same which is probably why when there are 5v5, or 10v10 matches, they are still held in WvW setting.

Next we have the PPT/Queue slot argument.
Let’s think about this for a moment. Who shows up to a party where they are not welcome? Let’s say you do, upon finding out- would you enjoy the feeling? “Ha ha ha, I am making people uncomfortable with my presence” usually isn’t a thought that would go through any normal person’s head in that kind of situation.

The point is, GvG participants don’t enjoy the fact that they have to take queue slots, or effect WvW server performance. In fact, the queue makes it even more of a headache to arrange these events in the first place. Two types of headache from this issue, getting your roster in the queue, and knowing that your roster is contributing to the queue, but not the server. Again, neither side of the story finds this pleasant.

Moving on, we can also identify the issue of trolls. People trebbing gvg fights, jumping in with the intention to grief, etc. Personally, I can’t stand it when someone jumps in my GvG from the sidelines. It leads to an unsatisfying win, or an excuse made for a loss that might have happened with or without the person jumping in.

In the end, no matter which opinion you hold about the subject- everyone plays this game to have fun. Competitive fun, casual fun, fun in zergs, fun dueling, fun roaming, fun in GvG, fun as sentry, fun as havoc, fun as siege users- whatever the form of fun is- people will always have a right to do what they want in a game to have fun, and of course the right to their own opinions about everything.

Let’s be competitive and respect one another as players and people rather than enemies. That’s what it comes down to.

There is a petition being signed. I’m sure we could agree that this would be in the interest of all participants of WvW. Using the gear we earned, our food buffs and proper build set ups, and preferred size of engagement is important to us- Spvp does NOT satisfy this issue.

Fun match up. Nice not to be up against people we outnumber, even if they have a different prime.

The one thing I will miss the most about this match up: Having dynasty warriors style duels with Sfeeeee, the [Ge] commander in the middle of 1000 AOEs from both sides that last for 30 seconds.
Which commander will die first?

Fun times in EB vs Ge this week, I missed my home-map.

EP has been running separately from the map commander.
I’m not really sure what all the qq is. We went from 35 to 15 gradually over the night.
You started wiping us when we had around 20 of us +5ish militia vs TG EA + mixtag.
The map commander joined us for that south bay wipe. Not sure why its so confusing.

Definitely give VR credit, you guys are slippery. Watching those videos helps me learn to maneuver against that meta. I’m so used to brawling from T2/T1 servers, it’s strange to fight this ranged game play. You guys definitely know how to kite around.

I’m just trying to figure out what you mean by “trolly”. Also, we use kiting tactics all the time and we usually aren’t running with other guilds. You’re mistaken to say that one group can’t kite one other.

By “trolly” i mean when kitten and VR both run the kite groups around a solo group, it feels like chasing horse archers on Mount & Blade. lol

Too bad isn’t it? I told people not to spawn camp and to leave the keep, dropped tag after moving north. Wood keep doesn’t = full upgraded but I did what I could. People are going to do what they are going to do.

Really bummed out about the way that VK happened tonight.

Glitch happened and people were repositioned through the gate. A portal was dropped and the militia took it and capped while we were still ramming and spamming “jump outside” in /say /team.

Sorry FA, the bug has been reported by my guild. I hope they fix soon.

I’m glad that SoS showed up on their BL in such a force. More groups like that and you’ll attract transfers/coverage. You guys are good, i’ve seen a lot of improvement in your zerging over 3 weeks.
Use your nonqueues to your advantage. Get groups in VOIP and do training sessions, we had to do that for quite some time before we beat Kaineng.
Anyway I hope the chest thumping stops, makes everyone look pretty dumb. lol

if you have a chance, try fighting with DB and SOR… thats where we learn from..

if you think fighting with TC brings the moral down to you guys… wait till you fight with DB and SOR.. its worst as i can say…

But TC beats DB especially when TC just recieved RE which are impressive.

Yes, we did win against them but not before RE transferred to us. Then again, when we fought against SOR, we were treated like newbies. That means we still have much to learn and improve upon. There’s always better tactics out there. Where SOR had very strong players. DB probably had the most inventive and patient way of fighting. You’ve got to fight them at least once.

Nah. We started beating DB when EP and CERN commanders came back to the game and our guilds rallied around the idea of beating DB. We won before RE came over, but now that RE is here, we will win by much larger margins.

EDIT: that sounds like taking all the credit, TC was definitely ready to win the match- they just needed a few more people back from burn outs to push it over is what I meant.

I know this coverage difference is pretty bad. But this is totally an opportunity to learn.
We learned a lot from getting stomped in T2 by KN and DB, and we learned more fighting SOR last week. Please don’t take this post as any kind of chest puffing, I really hope that both servers can find motivation this week.
My favorite weeks are when we’re getting stomped on TC. It’s a blast because there is so much to do just to even the odds on a map. The challenge is awesome and the feeling of accomplishment is amazing, as I am sure SoS felt with that WP SM!

But ironically, what I enjoy most is getting beat by someone doing something that i’m not, that I can learn from. I think SoS is totally stronger today than they were the previous saturdays we played and maybe that’s bc of SoR’s example or even a little bit of our own. I encourage you guys to keep at it, don’t play for score in such an unbalanced match, but fights and accomplishment’s like SoS’s Stonemist/pressure on TC’s third in EB today. Don’t get discouraged by the score, ignore it and have fun!

Anyway, from an old opponent, CD- I hope to see you guys more, I know you guys have been pushing hard lately, but this is your opportunity to see where we grew from when we last played each other, and even adapt some useful things into your own arsenals. I know it feels like a “bad week”, but if you see it as a reward- as I did vs SoR, then you will learn SO much. (Example, I felt very lucky to get the opportunity to get stomped by [Agg] in GvG, we learned a TON from that loss)

Just wanted to say thanks to all competitors on the field this week. Special shout out to CERN and EP, when you guys combine on a map, you can make the biggest coordinated team I have ever encountered in WvW to date. Some would trash talk this as you replacing skill with numbers, I do not. You move well, everyone is coordinated, and your numbers provide you with a might on the field that is VERY difficult to deal with. 60+ enemies charging through a choke at us with the 5 player cap on AOE means your for sure getting in.

Most don’t get that math, but if you have 100 players on a dime (hypothetically, don’t bother flaming me that you never run with 100), you run with a 95% damage reduction buff (5 players hit from each AOE out of 100 = 95/100 immune to AOE = 95% of damage doesnt hit your team). Very effective and very deadly.

At the end of the day, that’s all that matters. Take the games rules how they stand, and build your team the best you can. You guys did that to the Nth degree, and had us playing like the beginning days of TSYM when we were the small quick hit and portal escape team on DB. Was awesome facing another team knowing you had a stronger force by far, the fights last longer, and the hit and run movements and play to play strats being employed by both commanders was exquisite!

Very much looking forward to facing you guys again when score has more meaning. Keep recruiting, cause once you have the coverage to dance in T1, your NA will be a BLAST to fight!

I didn’t criticize TC’s strategic play. In fact, I think that’s their strong suit—where I think they’re a bit weaker is tactics.

So if tactics = portal bombs and strategic play = knowing when to use portal bombs, for instance, how could we be lacking in either of those fields? You can’t have one without the other.

What I’m saying is that TC makes solid strategic choices. If we make them choose between two keeps, they usually pick the right one. If we switch maps, they usually have scouts to see us and respond quickly. That kind of thing. I’m not badmouthing their commanders in the least: if you ask me, making those choices correctly is way more important than winning (most) open-field fights.

But when it comes to actual fights, I just don’t feel threatened by TC’s zerg when I’m commanding. The only time I really did was when Kaineng was in freefall and we were outmanned during daytime NA. People can rage and gnash their teeth and make silly assumptions/examples/comparisons all they want, but that’s the truth.

So if you’re TC and you’re reading this, your reaction will probably fall into one of two categories. The first we’ve already seen: “This guy doesn’t know what he’s talking about, and I choose to take his commentary as a slight against my server”

OR

“This guy has commanded against us a lot and has a perspective on the battles that we lack.”

I ask that you consider your reaction carefully before expressing it.

Also, I am having a blast playing vs KN, and FA when they are out in force. (The latter usually being hilariously timed flooding into an open keep behind my zerg.) But that isn’t a shot at you, opportunism is a trait all commanders should have in their arsenal. Example: I love it when we’re already getting pushed out of SM and regrouping on outer walls, checking my flank to see a mass of Red pouring into SE SM gate haha. I immediately prep a hit on green’s third. Good fun. Without events like that, wiping in SM with golems wouldnt be as fun!
