Megaserver downfall.

A better solution, would be to leave the capital city hubs as they were, and use the other zones for megaservers. They could be like WvW zones, where only server populations are allowed.

Why? Most ppl play mmorpgs to play with other ppl and if the hubs have fewer ppl then the zones you play in how would that be better then having hubs that a full populated?

Wrong.

Most people play MMORPGS to play with people that in same server/guild/community not with random intelligent life forms that don’t wanna communicate you and spam “1”.

I really want a blocking function in this forum to prevent myself from permaban when I see a Vayne post.

After months, I finally find myself in a Lion’s Arch where majority were Desolation players. Then, game kicked me out the login screen and when I returned, I was with French/Germans. Thanks for the hilarious fix.

Also, this game needs scaling with a better thought. “More people = More hp” is just a time sink.

About “improving the algorithm” just refer to my old post:

https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/game/gw2/Feedback-Questions-MegaServer/page/44#post4199569

Your thought about an improvement is probably related to “meeting similar faces” in generally not so much populated maps among all players. For instance, I can see familiar guild names in Caledon Forest; however, when I go to Lion’s Arch my chat is flooded by German or French.

And your suggestion about server chat channel is not even a minor fix about “fracturing of community” issue. It is just dodging the real problem like “not letting others to see foreign languages in their chat”.

They need to add temples to their broken schedules to provide an in-game timer.

They’ve already said that because of their megacrap system, they can’t provide us dynamic events. If you remember the old times, timers were server specific and more than one boss/event could occur at same time. By turning dynamic events into static jobs, whichever megamap you go, you can find the world boss encounter in that scheduled time (if it has not defeated). However, temple events are special to the megamap you are in. If you can’t find a temple event running, as long as a new map is created(and you find a taxi to it), you can do nothing.

That’s not it. It’s the nature of software and game engineering that there will be bugs. They do their best to find them and fix them before release, but maybe certain bugs just become apparent when much, much more people are attempting it.

Anyway, if you want a product that’s totally bug free, then you’re going to have to wait longer than 2 weeks for a release.

Yeah every, one-year computer science/engineering student’s excuse…

The problem is most of the softwares (including games) do not come with same bugs in every new update/patch etc.

Lets be honest. This game has “bugged event” problem from day -3 to now. It is not a new problem and obviously, since this game is relying on dynamic events, we EXPECT ANet to fix “bugged event” problem years ago. In reality, however, whenever they come up with a “new open world event” patch, we face with same, old never popping events bug (there were times when Three Headed Wurm didn’t spawn for instance).

Yeah, in some point we don’t know what is the problem and its solution, you are right. But for cheezus’ sake! Why should we understand or know coding/softwares/game industry to ask Anet to fix their ancient bugs? (btw I have enough knowledge about computer science). Why can’t some people understand that all we ask is “a fix for the bug that occurs ingame very often”. If they can’t find the reason in 2 years, it is not fault of “new patch every in 2 weeks” idea. It is either lack of care (“dont fix it forever, just fix it to save the day”) or QA in the company (it is a known fact that they outsourced their QA to a third party company)

Do you have a link or some other official statement about this? I’ve only ever heard about it from posters here. And considering they have QA people on their livestreams sometimes, I’m wondering if I should be impressed they fly them in to take part in teh videos.

Yeah I have direct information of a current ANet employee:

No amount of QA can ensure a flawless and bug-free release before they hit the main servers. And I’m fairly confident dynamic events do not work as simply as an on/off switch, as stated by an Anet dev.

These issues are indeed proving quite tricky to nail down (it’s not as simple as they simply won’t restart)

You are just copying only one sentence from my whole paragraph which you wanna answer and ignore the rest.

I’ve already said that “we don’t know the problem and its solution”; however, this game is 2 years old and it still has the same event bug. I can understand that it is not an easy fix. But, come on, there is no such bug that you can’t fix in 2 years.

Edit: They fixed the event issue with today’s patch. I hope it is also a general fix for future events and we won’t see the same, exact bug again.

If Anet haven’t changed the system, “being full/very high/high…” populated indicates the number of accounts in that server. So, you need to wait for ANet to increase server population cap or for some players to transfer to another server.

Obviously, you can’t come up with better arguments to what we said as broken. Your only argument is “me and my social circle likes it. I can count x many players that like it too. So it is good”.

Stop counting the thumbs up and downs. Megaservers broke every little thing I like about this game. We discussed it in 45 pages in this kitten topic. And your small environment that you are relying does not make problems disappear.

Asia (at least China) has its own servers now. Rest of the Asia is not my concern; however, if your country’s or continent’s time zone sucks, you could choose a server as your unofficial home (like Russians selected Blacktide at the very beginning of the release) to increase your probability to find your kind of players. And why should I think about everyone with a night job or has insomnia.

For your low pop server reference:

When I created my account, I specifically picked a server with a lower population because I just plain PREFER a less crowded world. I don’t do WvW, and less crowding = less lag on my less-than-stellar Internet connection.

Now I don’t have any choice. Even in towns, which have more reason to NOT be part of the MegaServer. I have had to turn off Player Names because it’s just too crowded to see the Bank NPCs behind all the text. And I rarely attend World Boss fights anymore due to excessive lag. Framerates get all choppy, and I freeze up sometimes to the point of getting disconnected.

How about adding a Micro Server for those of us who don’t care to live in New York, and would rather move out to a farm in Hooterville?

So basically, “everyone in the low populated servers want megaserver” argument falls short.

And for new player part, I already said what is needed to be. Anet alienated most of its old, loyal players to attract new players. Also, many mid level zones are still empty as long as there is no world boss alive at that time.

It was just a joke of course they didn’t implement megaservers just for you. It is originally implement for higher-ups that wanna bath in money by decreasing the server cost, alienating the old players (negative gem sales), attracting new players (box sales+gem sales).

Dude just because your time zone sucks now the rest of the players are all suffering -_-

However, before long ago the megaservers, players suggested an underflow system, like the old overflow one. Instead of creating new maps when a map is full, it is suggested servers that have less than x many players in a map y should be merged into the same map at that moment. Of course suggestions were more detailed (and i didn’t remember most of them), but all of the offered ones were better than megacrap (at the worst case scenario, underflow system could be equally bad as megacrap =))

Don’t dream about “tweaks on algorithm can fix stuff” since the problem is not the algorithm but the domain it is used. I will try to explain it as simple as possible:

- ANet, obviously, collect data about us and our environment while we are playing. So, in an ideal world the collected data is enough for them to identify who should be in same map with whom.

- Moreover, the algorithm that matches you with your friends are not complex. Yeah there is some Big Data stuff included; however, the small scale version is just a basic machine learning algorithm that can match you with your possible friends/guildies (and there can be several different algorithmic approaches for such matching). Since Anet has enough data, these algorithms can achieve really high accuracies for matching (but not %100). So, in terms of algorithm, ANet has no problem (I hope). The problem starts when you enter a map.

- First thing can happen is the map that your friends/party/guildies are in may reach the soft/hard caps. If it is soft cap, you can just “join”; otherwise, you need to spam “join”. This can’t be fixed fully (increasing cap is just a temporary solution for instance). It is just a situational case and you have to accept it. Since there are many players in the map, and many social circles that players have; many players try to be in the same map with their friends.

- Secondly, you are not the only one who has the person X as your friend. Let’s think about a two-men party and you both wanna enter Sparkfly. The person X teleports to map before you, and while he is teleporting, the algorithm places him to the best matching map by looking his/her server/guild/party/friendlist. Then, you teleport and same process happens. If you are lucky enough, your matching score make you enter the person X’s map. However, if you have more friends or better matching friends in another Sparkfly instance, system separates you from person X. Again, you can do nothing about it. You can’t say system to “prioritize party in this case and prioritize guildies in another case and so on,” because there are infinitely many cases out there. There are infinitely many connections between lots of players and it is an impossible task to match every single player correctly.

- Thirdly, even if you are the perfect match of a person X (let’s assume you are both from same server, guild and in same party), the algorithm can’t achieve the %100 accuracy. You and the person X are the perfect friends just by looking; however, a computer algorithm does not work like that. It does it calculations and if it fails, you will be separated.

- Finally, I have no idea how this system can match me with Frenches and Germans. It is probably a default case in Europe server: “If you can’t find a proper map for player X, just throw him into Frenches and Germans. Make him suffer!”

To conclude, don’t expect any tweaks or optimizations in the algorithm/code. The problem is not the algorithm but the domain itself. There are too many possible cases to be handled and there is no algorithm to fix them all. Obviously, ANet did not think about Megaserver idea as they should be. Even with 30 minutes of self-brainstorming, I can tell you most of the possible cases that Megaservers fall short. I don’t believe that any staff at ANet hadn’t thought any of these issues; however, some higher-ups, that wanna bath with money, made them implement this system to create a crowded game illusion to attract new players.

Making expansions instead of 2 weeks of small patches doesn’t prevent ANet to focus on the cash-shop. You can check LotRO as an example for this. Small patches in 4-5 months in a year and one big(!) expansion once in a year. However, they focus on their shop between patches/expansions (and unlike GW2, it has monthly subscription too).

If this system is not %100 ready, why did they force this MEGACRAP on us? Couldn’t they just turn several maps (one map from each level+one city map) and test their system? Or maybe for one week, they could change every map to a megaserver, collect data and then return to the old system until they could do everything perfect?

Yeah because megaservers are THE BEST SYSTEM EVER and there are none consequences that anyone could think about.

But do you know, Vayne? Before they implemented megaservers, we wrote wall of concerns about this system. And your beloved company’s workers said us “We will take care of them”. Yeah, they really take care of them by ignoring.

Until the idea is tested by a bunch of people thinking about it, trying to poke holes in it, a dev can’t reply. Should they have those meetings hourly? Daily? Weekly? Weekly is far too long with the number of suggestions.

3 months + 2 weeks past since they wrote a blog about megaservers and implemented into the game. Do you want us to wait for 9324802984029 years more?

Also, I don’t know since when you are playing GW2, but I am here since day -3. Anet does not test their systems. Because we are still in beta.

(Actually, according to the information taken from ArenaNet page in glassdoor.com, they closed their own QA team and outsourced it to another company which is probably the worst decision they could ever think about [after megaservers of course =)]).

I think it’s unreasonable to expect replies to long long threads like that.

Usual white knighting detected in small scale. You are right if they do something to fix megaservers without coming to this topic and chat with us. But they haven’t done anything in game too. By looking their behaviours, they won’t do anything.

You killed an asuran baby again shiny white knight.
With what REAL data do you want me to prove? You are just making a huge fallacy in your post by using your environment only and I am redirecting your fallacy with your own arguments:

I know from experience that there’s a huge number of people who like to be in a community while playing MMOs. They left, because their communities killed to make some kind of poor, cant use guesting/transferring systems players happy. Because they are in a community, they couldn’t do bosses and events together which they had been doing for a long time without a problem. I was in a guild full of people and I can find only 6-7 active players now.

Can you see? I can revert your every argument for my case and both of us can’t prove who is right as long as we don’t have the real data. And obviously real data is not the “map you are in with full of players”. Since even if this game has only 300 players at total and all of them go to kill a boss, they can create 2 full maps without a problem.

Without a schedule players could select which boss they want to do. So you could divide the zerg between bosses. Also, you could do pretty much all world bosses in 2 hours without a problem.

With megaservers, they brought schedules and dynamic events have become dynamic jobs. Because you can kill same bosses in same order in everyday if your online time is same, due to work/school/real life. Moreover, since there can be only one boss available in a given time frame, all players teleport to same map at that time frame which creates overpopulation, performance issues and lags.

Just because you can kill a giant, we lost our server communities. Seems very legit trade-off.

And also even before megaservers, you could kill Tequatl. But since lots of players want to ezmode content, they guested to servers like Desolation and Blackgate to leech those servers’ players spot. If they had stayed in their server and wasted their effort a little bit, it wouldn’t be a problem.

Megaservers just is a server merge with a fancy name. Instead of using guesting from your login screen, game makes you guest random maps without login/logout.

Moreover, if you want to kill Tequalt or Wurm you need to camp a map spot at least 1 hour before now (it was same in the old system though). So that you can team up with a coordinated group. Try going Sparkfly or Bloodtide 10 minutes before the event and tell me your success story.
