SO basically everything they did before launch… your list has not a single thing that came after launch… sounds about right
Wow, I didn’t even think about that as I was writing it, but yeah, you’re right. I do like Silverwastes, the wardrobe system (feature) and the Fractals which are all post launch updates. I wish the Fractals would get more support though… And the Halloween and Wintersday JPs are my two favorite in the game. But yeah, the majority of what I love about this game has been there from day 1.
There’s an inverse to this thread, you can find it here. I agree with some of what’s being said there, not all of it. As the OP states, it’s an IMO thread, just like this one but there are some things that ANET, IMO, certainly did get wrong (new trait acquisition, removal of solo queue), but I’m still playing.
And it’s not because I’m a masochist (ok, sometimes I am, like on a particularly long run of bad games solo queuing into ranked/unranked arena…). Like I said, I keep playing, just like a lot of us, in spite of the faults we find with the game: we keep playing. And it’s because ANET got a lot of things right. Sometimes it’s important to not lose sight of that, so while I appreciate the 5/Wrong thread, here’s some balance to it.
Top 5 things ANET got Right – not in any particular order
1. Art Work/Visuals: This game is beautiful, the artwork is fantastic (thank goodness there’s no 1st person view to ruin it, eh?! :o)). It feels like a real place, I don’t get a lot of repetitive textures, I get the feeling a lot of time and effort went in to making this game look beautiful. From character creation to the dye options we have to the way LA and all the major cities in this game look different from eachother, this game is gorgeous.
2. Combat/Movement: This aspect of the game has ruined me for other MMOs. Nothing I’ve played combines the characteristics of an MMO with the kind of freedom of movement that GW2 has. It’s probably the main reason I still play. I love the combat in this game from combo fields to dodging and the importance of visual queues and positioning, this is the best combat system I’ve played in an MMO, no other comes close for me.
3. Events: It’s easy to forget how different quests felt in this game (I hate hearts, for the record). The first time I really got events was in Harathi where my brother and I followed a chain which culminated in a show-down with a Harathi Overlord. Awesome. The event system is something I can take for granted now, but is it a cool way to engage the environment of the game, it does give it a more “realistic” feel for me. And I sometimes forget how much I prefer it to traditional questing mechanics.
4. Trading Post: I know some people cry foul on this thing and claim market manipulation, but I remember having to spam chat in Kamadan trying to off-load a BDS for 100ectos and thinking, “I could be out doing stuff right now.” I don’t have to worry about that in GW2. I love the trading post, and I love being able to find what I need w/o having to pm people and watch map-chat in a major city. Stuff I don’t need doesn’t take up space in my inventory or go to an NPC merchant, I can list it and forget it. I like that.
5. Buy to Play: I played GW1 extensively (50/50 GWAMM), and I bought each expansion as well as EotN, and I would never have spent a penny on GW1 if it came with a monthly fee. ANET have managed to offer a massive game with a lot of content (but I do side with the expansion crowd, need moar!), and I haven’t had to pay a monthly fee. It’s the reason GW1 and now GW2 are the main games I play online. I can’t stress enough how important an aspect of ANET’s game this is to me.
So there you have it, my list. What’s your top 5?

Just request that they put it into unranked queue rotation. They’ll put anything in there.
Apparently this is a thing now? It’s happened to me 2x from 2-3pm EST and pretty much everyone else who is queued (I’m solo) into those matches with me.
We get a queue pop, followed by a second queue pop and then dc and reload into the second queue’s map.

Yup, lot’s of lag… in fact, just had a mass DC…
We get a double queue pop, first for courtyard (cause it got 3 votes), then we all dc and load back into a 4v3 on skyhammer which turns to a 5v3 and eventually a 5v4.

I think it would be great if endless tonics had a similar functionality to the current implementation of mini pets.
Having them as a select-able item from a menu would open up inventory space and give each alt access to them.

Hey, we heard you guys didn’t like skyhammer? So we removed solo queue and added a tdm into your conquest rotation!
Is this bugged? I’ve defended points, but don’t seem to get credit for it. Same thing happened the other day. Anyone else, or am I missing something?
Easily the worst pvp update in the history of the game… it almost feels like the game is in beta again.
Getting fed to premades in solo queue… so dumb. And it happens too often.
hmmmm, maybe it would be better to separate the lore from the quests. Maybe the quest is a simple, symbolic transference of ownership of the weapon’s legacy to the new owner (Taking up the mantle, righting the wrong, etc.).
But the lore behind the legendary weapons could be new reading options at the priory library. That would be a cool way for the devs to hint at new legendaries as well, adding some lore about the current ones.
Anyway, thanks for the replies, if you have other ideas, please post them!
A Legendary Proposal
Let’s play a game, It’s called: Spot the greatswords! (Hint: The title of this thread).

Did you find them? There are 21 legendary weapons in this game. There are 19 different types of weapons. And for some reason, despite a one-to-one match of legendary to weapon type for every other weapon, the greatsword gets three legendaries. And it’s pretty cool. Sunrise + Twilight = Eternity.
If you’re like me, you might wonder why greatswords get to have all the fun. Why doesn’t every legendary weapon have a match that allows you to craft a third? Wouldn’t that be cool?
Three Legendary weapons for each set
What if Bolt had an earth themed counterpart (electro-magnetism)? Combining the two in the Mystic Forge could create a storm themed weapon (think earthquake & thunderstorm).
What if Kudzu had an opposite. Instead of a life/nature themed weapon, why not something based around decay and death? This could be a yin/yang type set that when combined in the Forge would create a weapon that appears to constantly be attempting to balance itself with the bow vacillating between life and death effects: flowers withering away and then bursting to life, wood decaying… etc.)
And for The Dreamer... well, ok, I got nothing there… but you get the idea. Why should greatswords have all the fun?
Where’s the Lore?
In addition to the greatsword treatment, something else has always bothered me about legendary weapons, namely: The Legends. Where are they? Ever looked up a legendary weapon on the wiki? Lot’s of description regarding how it looks, plenty of info about how to craft it… but nothing about why it’s legendary. Who or what wielded this weapon in some great battle to make it what it is today? Or maybe who sacrificed all they had to create it? What’s the story behind these weapons?
So in addition to adding a second (and then third via the forge) Legendary for the other weapon sets, why not add the lore behind these weapons? Why not have a mini-personal story quest chain that unlocks once a player forges the final weapon form with Zoromos? This could lead the player on a story-line that tells the history and story behind how the legendary weapons came to be.
Were Sunrise and Twilight originally wielded by adversaries who had to reconcile and join forces to defeat a common enemy? Were they gifts a wealthy Lord bequeathed his two sons that led to a jealous confrontation and divided the family only to have a granddaughter take both and forge a third sword and reunite the family? These weapons shouldn’t just exist because they look cool.

Ryan, regarding dodge jumping, you want to press both dodge and jump at the same time. I have D bound as my dodge and spacebar is jump. It takes a bit of getting used to, but it can be quite useful and you get good distance and you can travel the full distance even when in combat.
My daughter (5 y/o) really likes the Winter Wonderland Jumping puzzle, and she also likes dodge-jumping which she calls “Gymnastics.”
While watching me do a run through Winter Wonderland, she asked me to do some gymnastics, so I started doing some dodge-jumping. It ended up being pretty fun and makes for a cool-looking run through the JP.
I don’t feel like it shaves off any time (on account of the snowflake respawns), but she seems to like it. Here’s what it looks like.

With regards to an “easy” build. I would say S/D has more survive-ability… But it’s not really easy to play.
I’d suggest trying both and see which one you like the best.

New match-making is abysmal. It really doesn’t work. Very sad because I was looking forward to it.
My brother and I could duo queue previously and have fun, now it just seems like we get farmed by full premades.
+1 for solo queue coming back. It wouldn’t be necessary if they could actually get match-making right, but it doesn’t seem like they can.
Previous iteration of match making wasn’t great, but it was a lot better than this.
1. Get rid of hot join, make unranked queue the new practice mode (why does HJ even exist at this point, it is useless for practice w/ the way it is implemented now)
2. Leave custom, player owned arenas for tournies and dueling, etc.
3. Make compete have a solo and team queue.

happened to me 5x times now where I run past the snowman and then lose most of my health while running down the candy cane bridge afterward.
nothing is hitting me, just half – two-thirds of my health disappears as I run down that bridge. Really, really frustrating.
Not sure if someone already mentioned this, but the issue with the presents seems to be the RNG nature of their respawn. If the present closest to the pad spawns early on, people jump before all the presents are back and that seems to cause the issues.
I just wait for a good spawn or for the people in front of me to die off/make it on and then go when it is just me or a few other people on a good spawn.
had a match w/ 3 mesmers on my team last night… surprisingly… we won.
This was far and away the main draw for the guildies and me regarding the Wintersday event. Massively disappointed with this change.
Hopefully they can make the necessary changes to revert it back to last year’s format.

We can no longer team up (5 man groups) to do this event. This is hugely disappointing as it was a fan favorite last year especially with a full team.
On top of that there appears to be a significant bug were you join the instance after the event is complete and need to wait out the timer…

What if battle granted 2 stacks of might instead of 3 and ele dagger 5 blast-finished at the end, rather than the beginning of the animation?

1. Change your build: I think those 2 pts in shadow arts do not give you as much of a return of investment as you would get putting them into acrobatics. You’ll get additional HP, you can add Pain Response, Vigor on heal or might on dodge, and you’ll get a nearly 100% up-time 10% damage bonus. Run 2/0/0/6/6
Those sigils are optional, you can switch accuracy out for +5% damage or fire, generosity on sb for any of the aforementioned.
2. Watch some top S/D thieves play: During peak EU hours, watch Sizer and during peak NA hours check out Toker…

Question: Do you plan to reduce the likelihood of a map showing up as an option if over time it is shown to get fewer and fewer votes?
I know you plan to remove these maps from ranked queue during seasons, but it would be nice if maps that rarely get more than 1 or 2 votes are also rarely selected as an option to choose from in unranked queue.
1. Would it be possible for players queuing solo to only ever be matched up against other players queuing solo? I don’t mind a single queue button for everyone, but the system should be able to split duo-queued and up from solo folk. To really go all out, you could have a check box that people select to opt-in to being a solo queue player that gets paired with non-solo queuers. Options are always nice!
2. Improve rewards for Ranked Matches or reduce Unranked arena to the previous Solo Queue level of rewards. Currently, w/o a leaderboard or better rewards, there’s no reason to use ranked queue, this may not be much of an issue when the season starts, but right now ranked arena feels like an unnecessary option. That shouldn’t be the case. Unranked arena should not be as rewarding as ranked (remove the title wins from unranked as well, pls (champ titles)). Make unranked arenas the “test area, playground” type place they were meant to be (i think).
3. Remove the following maps from Ranked Arena: Skyhammer, Spirit Watch & Courtyard. No explanation needed on that one.
In closing, thanks for the hard work devs. I’m really frustrated this didn’t turn out better because I firmly believe you guys worked your kittens off getting this stuff done and did so because you love this game mode as much as we do. Ultimately, I don’t know that any back-end changes are going to be the solution to the inherent issue of a low population of PvP players.
I think there needs to be a big improvement to the rewards aspect of this game mode if it is going to see a long-term population growth, and it will also need new game modes to keep players interested. I’m not sure which of those two things is a the chicken or the egg, but I think starting with more rewards and achievement points couldn’t hurt. Thanks for reading.
I’m posting this here because I think this is purely an sPvP issue.
Currently an engie’s turrets work regardless of where the engineer is, he can summon 3-7 of them and then go +1 a fight somewhere else but his turrets left on the point will still defend it.
This is annoying more than anything and delays the cap and can (depending on how many turrets are on/around the point) burn your CDs making you vulnerable to attack (esp. if you’re a glass-cannon spec). Unattended AI shouldn’t be doing this kind of thing.
Proposal: If the Engineer who summoned the turrets is not within 450 range of the turret, it will simply sit idle. It won’t work. You could play around with the correct distance to give the engie enough room to LoS and avoid damage on the node but keep him somewhat tethered to where he’s dropped his turrets.
30% is not as good as 0%. Just Sayin’.
Actually, it’s 25%, I was corrected in another thread. Dropping trolling from 100% to 25% with one feature? I’d count that as a win, but you can’t please everyone.

3. Except for Skyhammer! Even with the recent changes, which do improve it, it still isn’t a conquest map. It’s still too trolly. Why not revert the changes and host your own custom arenas with 24/7 Ham? You could put up 10 or so custom arenas that just ran the old skyhammer.

They can make a premade group that is insanely op at skyhammer and win half of their matches..
Less than 50%, probably closer to 30% if they don’t adapt. You’re given 3 maps to vote on, and which 3 is chosen randomly, so there’s chance any map won’t even be a choice.

A bunch of names that are from the original Guild Wars and its lore were censored yesterday. They were names that we had believed were already in the filter, but we discovered that they were not. More of these will be happening in the coming days. Hope that clears it up for you.
