Thorny Scrub – Thief
Desolation
(edited by Raap.9065)
Desolation can’t leave from the main spawn area of FS borderlands, effectively limiting our playing in that map. And Kodash has a bugged orb. Thanks Arenanet.
Desolation always had less players during the day on weekends, it will improve on week days. I still think we did alright even with the sometimes difficult W+WvW scenarios that happened at both FS and Deso borderlands.
But yeah brag all you want, the week hasn’t even started yet.
(edited by Raap.9065)
Nice teaming you got there.
Half-decent fights at FS borderlands.
Why half decent? Our spawn has a bug, if you leave through the center gate, you get greeted by a perma-loadscreen.
Also, Nug, it’s been weeks since Deso last fought you, yet you still hang on to that mass-blobbing so the culling system overloads. The tactic is old and lame, and clearly isn’t helping you in the end.
I hope the fights are more interesting the rest of the weekend!

We may or may not have cookies.
Glad I decided to stockpile all those chests.
Everyone has loads of those chests.
The real question is, did you collect keys which only come from personal story, map completion, and the cash shop? Unlikely that you did. And seeing as the first two methods of obtaining the keys are both a pain in the kitten and a lottery, you’re likely going to have to pay a lot of money for the items.
Or, you could simply not participate in the cash grab part of this event.
WvW is one giant goldsink. I don’t think we need to limit player organisation for the sole perpose of putting a sink to prevent farmers from having too much gold. Farmers will always have gold, thats why you need to add fluff things to the game like legendary weapons to keep them busy. The commander book is currently used as a prestige icon for farmers because of the lack of other perposes gold has for farmers.
Meanwhile, WvW players are broke as competitive/structured WvW play is extremely expensive and actually requires daily farming to even keep up with. I think these dedicated WvW players need another way of obtaining the skill book, and other players deserve to know that a WvW player is leading them, not a farmer.
I wouldn’t be against a slight damage increase (~10%) on arrow carts/superior arrow carts to compensate for AOE killing them so fast, but damage-wise the other siege equipement is fine.
That said, ALPHA golems are mostly just mobile rams. I think their skills 3 and 4 could use some changes in the utility aspect, since they are not great. Perhaps the pull ability simply needs 1200/1500 range so it can be used to pull people off walls.
On a side note, I’d like to see more siege equipement added to the game, not just damage-dealing ones, utility aswell.
I’d like a new method of obtaining the skill book instead, which will also solve your problem here.
Currently, the single-character 100g book promotes gold buyers and PvE farmers. Very often these players obtain the book for ‘prestige’ perposes rather than for leading WvW. It’s very harmfull for the WvW ‘pug environment’ to have these random people running around with a commander icon, who often haven’t got any idea how to even play WvW, or worse, use a mindless zerg for their personal farming perposes (taking them to puzzles, ect.).
Instead I believe a new way of obtaining the skill book needs to be created. So I suggest it is made account-wide based on WvW activity. Add a few new WvW achievements or tiers to existing WvW achievements, resulting in a book requirement of something along the lines of:
- 200 hours spend in WvW.
- 200 objectives captured (camps, towers, keeps, SM, nothing else or it’s too easy to farm).
- 20k supply used.
This will allow any character on an account to obtain the skill book since it would be achievement based.
It tells other players this commander has played WvW before and it isn’t just another gold buyer/farmer.
I think he’s suggesting that things which might look as exploits to some are simply tricks they don’t know, or havent noticed aspects of when set into motion
Also, Raap, considering every server we’ve played against so far puts trebs on that spot, or at least tried, and we have both attacked and defended makes me surpirsed you didn’t know about that location Or the counter for it.
Why did you think we were hovering around the bottom of the garrison? Wasn’t just because we’re so pretty, also so we could intercept any attempts at putting down ballistas
You don’t understand. The Trebs that can reach the walls are destroyable with Ballistas, yes. However the Trebs you placed were put far enough away to not be targettable. They could not hit our wall either, but they could hit the gate. We’re speaking of a very small 1 meter-ish area that sits between ‘out of range of the gate’ and ‘in ballista targetting range’. You put those trebs inside of it, and we could not target them, no matter where we tried.
So you sit there and see a Mesmer and think oh no an exploit. That’s the easy option. now lets see what really happened.
I never thought anything. If you properly read my post you can read that I wrote: “Additionaly someone reported seeing”.
It’s a report in chat by someone else which in all honestly, was not entirely unlikely given the fact teleport hackers are spotted very often in WvW.
So just to clarify, I accused no one of cheating in these posts.
(edited by Raap.9065)
The Mesmers did it with their Elite skill “Portal Zerg to Server Location”.
Now that we’re all here complaining about it. Blacktide you ARE aware those trebs can’t be hit even with ballistas, right? How fair is that? You got us pinned down because of a terrain exploit, we can’t leave the keep, are you enjoying that?
Additionaly someone reported seeing russian mesmers teleport infront of them out of nowhere and pop portals, south side of AB, which never got breached.
(edited by Raap.9065)
I find plenty of these locations. On Cursed Shore alone you can find lots of places to get out of the map.
I report all which I find. Usually I find them out of boredom. I’d look at a place on a map and make it my goal to reach it, and do it succesfully almost anytime. Just takes some know-how in terms of how the engine works.
My problem is, each of the areas I report get fixed in the most uncreative way imaginable; Invisible walls. Nothing is more immersion and fun-breaking than climbing something tricky, only to hit an invisible wall. I wish they’d stop using that cheap old method and actually get creative when it comes to terrain fixes.
Right now the game simply favours the server that is the last to hold everything before people have to go to work, ect.
Deso might cap things at night, but we can only hold it for a few hours, then the Russians take over and hold them the entire morning and afternoon since we got no players on at those hours. This is something unique that only Blacktide will be able to pull off because of their high number of Russian players which no other server has.
Desolation gets home from work to then have an uphill battle against fully upgraded holdings and 3 orbs. This takes a long time to retake, just as it did when the french (vizunah and arborstone) took it during the night when we had no night crew yet.
The situation would have likely been reversed if Deso was the only server in the matchup to have a non-EU timezone playerbase. The match could have been interesting if all three servers only had EU and NA timezone players, but now we face the strange situation where (by EU standards) Deso has nightcapping, Blacktide has morning capping, and AR only has a daytime force. This puts Blacktide at a strong advantage during EU primetime, simply by game mechanics.
But, this is the way Arenanet will keep it. And this is something we all have to deal with… So… WTB Asian force.
The OP part about thieves is the culling system not reloading them fast enough out of stealth. Obviously, the 8k steal+7k CnD+8k backstab in 1.5 seconds after comming out of stealth (when still invisible) IS overpowered and will eventually get nerfed.
I personally do not run this FotM build on my thief.
Deso players dropping the ball again. Not winning in score so we got no queues and no zergs. Nasty cycle, and I hope to see it broken one day.
Most of the tears here come from players that were never around when we got our kitten kicked, and only showing up when we are getting higher scores. You have no right to speak, go complain somewhere else.
To complaining servers: Your very own nightcapping made this happen. Deso never had a large night team, this (along with the fact we were much less organised) made us lose high tier matches. We solved both problems now, and so you complain.
AR and Russia claiming they beat us during the day? When? Even during EU primetime this has been nothing but a badge farm weekend.
AR and Russia saying we demoralized them because of nightcapping, what, on the first two days of a matchup during a weekend? You already gave up on saturday morning, you whiners. Don’t tell me you got demoralized after a few hours of WvW.
Did Desolation give up when we got nightcapped upon and zerged even during normal hours? No, many players kept up the fight and we made a comeback out of it. Sure, our ‘casuals’ are quick to jump ship, and they are also the first to complain.
Honestly, if you don’t like the progress Desolation is making in WvW, leave.
And TRON, you’re bragging about stealing a golem from a RUIN commander… Good job.
As one of the guys of IRON that is pulling all-nighters for 14days straight now, here is my stance on RUIN joining Deso:
I kittening love it. Thank god. I can actually go to sleep at normal times without losing all the money I spent on upgrades for keeps and towers. Yes, I still loose about 5g worth of upgrades each day, but I much prefer that to the 10-15g (each day or rather, night) I lost when playing against Arborstone.
To all the people whining about ques: As said before this is due to the broken mentality of most Deso players. As long as we win, we will have ques. This is in no way RUINs fault. Also: The Borderlands only have about a 10-15min que in the evening, and I LOVE that. Seriously. Here is the reasoning behind me, loving ques:
- snip -
- Bloodsteel
Very much agreed and quoting as this is the truth. Don’t blame queue’s on a single guild, it’s unfair to do so.
Deso needed a nightcap team for ‘EU offhour’ coverage, in order to stay viable as a high tier server. We also needed to improve a lot on coordination and I can say we improved a LOT since our last time in T2/1.
Two additional factors are involved in the queue’s however, let’s not forget about them:
1- Randoms and PvE focussed guilds jump in when we’re doing well to farm in WvW. (Tip to Arenanet: Cut all PvE related content from WvW, and replace karma rewards with badge rewards.)
2- Free server transfers with no restrictions on WvW, causing people from losing servers to transfer to the winning server for farming perposes. (Tip to Arenanet: Disallow participation in a running matchup when transfered during that period, up to a max of 7 days as that is the current match length.)
I’d like to see a direct link to the source where the dev states bypassing holding defences is fine and working as intended.
You can’t report cheating/exploiting ingame. There is no option for it in the ‘report’ function.
I slightly editted that for clarity. EU primetime goes from GMT-1 to GMT+2, lasting for ~3 hours in week days (starting around 19:00 GMT), and starting earlier in weekends.
Europe takes up a smaller timezone range than NA.
Some people may not agree with the concept of a ‘primetime’, but it exists, and this is as accurate as it gets for targetting the largest EU primetime area.
(edited by Raap.9065)
Tonight on AR borderlands we had a russian guild from Blacktide transfer to Deso. So yes, to say it once again, transfers need to be much more limited.
Anyway, often we’re the ones being nightcapped upon, and now we actually have the ability to counter it. When we got nightcapped on a lot, we still had many guilds playing WvW for fun even when a first place was impossible.
Hopefully we keep improving and lose some of the tree transfer abusers soon. I’d like to play in T1/2 again.
Oh and for the record, you can’t nightcap in EU primetime, we vastly outplayed both servers in EU primetime, and were fighting both servers at the same time all day (atleast on AR borderlands). Thanks for all the badges at Garrison guys! And credit to IRON for leading that map today (may the omega golem armada rest in peace).
(edited by Raap.9065)
We don’t have any videos so here’s a picture to explain what happened.
Rofl! That one made me laugh.
Xaoc from Blacktide just tried getting into Ascension Bay on AR borderlands by using the underwater exploit. Pretty sad tbh. I guess this is what you try to do when you are losing to us in primetime, huh?
You’ll notice that as it vanished, it moves backwards for one or two frames on the path that is intended for it to follow.
I’d say it’s an event connected to the pirate raider NPCs you see at the nearby waypoint/camp, but for some reason is bugged and never taking place.
I really don’t understand why a guild like RUIN would move to an EU server to WvGate while the rest of the matchup is asleep. Sounds to me like having no real opposition would get boring as hell pretty quickly.
You’ve not been in T2/1 yet. The only way to stay in there is to have a nightcrew.
I’m interested to see what that clocktower will end up being ingame. Judging by the design, and chest, I’d say it is a jumping puzzle.
I’m going to be honest and say, I hated the clock tower level in Mario 64, getting to the top was a nightmare. Please give me that nightmare back for Halloween, thanks.
I don’t like the current mechanic in WvW one bit. It just makes zerging stronger.
The usual scenario: Zerg is gate hugging at your holding, you are defending with far less people. With solid arrow cart focus firing, you manage to down one! Only to see 5 of his zergling buddies insta-revive him, and you achieved nothing.
Regular scenario with Rally: You got a small scale battle, lets say 3v3 at a supply camp. It’s a good battle and you’re roughly evenly matched. One player of each team get downed, and then one of 2 things usually happens: 1) The downed player on one team gets rallied because the other downed player died, turning it into a 3v2. 2) One of the downed players manage to kill a mob to get rallied, making it a 3v2.
Having suffered plenty of these moments (mainly the first regarding zerg friendlyness of downed state mechanics), I believe the following should happen in WvW:
- Rally needs to go, it’s practically just a luck mechanic in being able to kill a mob before you get finished or managing to find and kill another downed player with your weak, short range ‘1’ spam (unless you got an OP downed state). In a large fight it’s just a tab-target, ‘1’ spamming mess and hope you get lucky.
- Mid-combat reviving speeds needs a dramatic decrease. I can down a player and watch his 5 zerg buddies almost instantly revive him. A flat 75% decrease in revive speed would help a lot, but I’d also like to be able to interupt revivers easier. Not all classes got a way of interupting a reviving player and end up bashing away at him in the hope of killing him before he manages to revive his ally. I think that a reviving player, when losing more than 10% of his health while ‘casting’ a revive, should be interupted. It allows him to keep reviving when being hit by indirect AOE damage, but force him to fight for himself when targetted directly.
These changes would help make WvW more balanced and more skill based in both large and small scale WvW fights.

EU ‘night forces’ are very large in T2 and 24/7 zergy in T1. The NA players will not lack action if we get back into T2 or T1.
As for german servers not having a night zerg option, 2 things:
1- No offense guys, you play on a server marked to use a single language, what do you expect, people to learn german so they can play on your server?
2- The french don’t have a problem nightzerging.
maximumpanda.5178we fully expect to get our kitten handed to us in T2-1 as we learn the tactics that EU servers are using.
PREPARE TO RUB THOSE GATES, MEN!

Oh YOU’RE thorny scrub :P I see you complaining in team chat a lot, haha :P
And yeah, the hackers have made everyone paranoid. Now anyone who mesmers in is suddenly a hacker.
My problem is I basically write my thoughts in chat without thinking if I should write it or not. I have the same on voice coms. The good part is that I’m very direct aswell, and people either like me or hate me for it.
Often I simply write what most others think, but don’t mention.
Yeah, I don’t think I’ve ever seen you write something I don’t agree with :P You can come across as a bit of a negative nancy at times though ;D
Heh, it can be seen that way. Anyway let’s stop the friendly talk before more of our posts get deleted for it! Send you a PM!
I’d like to say thanks for the fights this week, hacking, hacking accusations, and complaining about nightcapping aside. Desolation managed to salvage a comeback out of this week and I’ll be interested to see where we end up next match.
I’d also like to say welcome to maximumpanda and RUIN. I hope this weeks performance showed you Desolation does not back down even after a very rough period. We managed to fight our way back and, to be honest, if this was a 2 week matchup, we’d be fighting for first place with SFR, after comming from a 3rd place.
I hope you and the other guilds can work as a team better, and start a dialog between alliances. Communication is key, and a friendly environment even more so.

To clarify: We had a mesmer inside Hills keep, waited untill the defenders attacked garrison and then ported in to attempt to ninja the orb with 4 people. We failed our attempt as we got spotted on our way in, but apparantly this is called ‘flying’ and ‘cheating’.
It lasts about ~15 minutes sometimes, other times about 30 seconds. It’s a great and well thought out anti-spam feature that like so many anti-bot/spam/ect features end up harming normal players more than the intended target.
I’ve rarely seen gold selling advertisement spam, but I run into this kitten message all the time in WvW.
I made a thread about it in the WvW section a while back but apparantly I’m the only person that has a problem with the system, atleast the only person that’s willing to comment on it publicly.
They need to allow players to say more than 3 lines, and preferably completely disable it in WvW. If someone is spamming you that badly, use the ignore function.
Edit:
3 identical messages in a row (in a short timespan) is considered spamming. Next time just change your message a bit and you’ll be fine.
This is not correct, actually. I’ve tested it and I still run into the problem if I’ve said 3 different things. It’s all based on time frame. It does seem to kick in more often in map and team chat than in local chat.
Please stop perpetuating the idea that ANet will wait until the 22nd to release a fix for this. It is 100% false information based on a quote from another thread taken completely out of context. The “next content patch” has nothing to do with when a hotfix will be deployed for a major gamebreaking issue like this.
They will patch this issue as soon as they have a working, tested fix for it; spreading rumors to the contrary is just pouring gasoline on the fire.
I can say the same for your opinion. We don’t know if they will hotfix this or not, we don’t know if a fix will be ready before the 22th. All we know is that ‘a patch’ will come the 22th, and several other big issues have never been ‘hotfixed’ before either.
In my opinion it’s fair as long as all AOE in the game continues to work like it does.
The best solution would be to have AOE be affected by line of sight. So say, you throw AOE on the side of a wall without being able to see the top of the wall from your character’s position, should mean the AOE only hits the side.
Untill then, it remains a fair counter.
I give up, not likely playing anymore untill this is fixed or at the very least, rolled back to last patch. Next patch the 22th which has no mention of this issue, great, but no thanks.
45~ minutes of WvW:
(edited by Raap.9065)
Is it still the same guy doing this?
Can’t blame you one bit. Between all the bugs, exploits, hacks, invisibility, and general attitude of Arenanet both ingame and out of the game, I’m having a hard time enjoying the game, and I know others feel the same way.
I’ll try to play, but I’ve already been playing less. Supposedly the next patch won’t be here untill the 22th, and even then, no word of any of these critical issues being fixed by then or not. I can understand they are tricky problems to solve, but from a 200+ man development team you’d expect them to be able to fix things faster.
Work around: Don’t use highest quality audio, set the slider one step below highest quality and then reboot the GW2 client. You should no longer get this audio bug. Note: Does not fix existing cases of the bug, a client restart is required to apply this work around.
Been playing for 2+ weeks now without getting the bug anymore, while previously I’d get it after 5 minutes of WvW.
(edited by Raap.9065)
So I’m hearing mixed reports from people. Some claim this gives them a very noticable FPS gain, others claim they see no difference in FPS but do feel a ‘stuttering’ in movement. Could more people tell us what they notice?
As it so happens, I installed the previous driver only a few days ago and I’m noticing a ‘stuttering’ there aswell, however, I wasn’t sure if it was the driver or the game patch causing it.
This serves two purposes: A money sink for players & avoids ridiculously outfitted keeps/towers over time.
But if they did take this out it would be pretty funny to see… imagine the amount of accumulated siege. lol
Arrow carts are cheap and only 30 supply. It just means the defense needs to be ready to react/build on the fly. Adds to the challenge of it all.
You DO realise this isn’t actually possible, right? You cannot place more than ~5 siege equipement in an area before you are locked out from spawning more.
Keeping that in mind, why should someone’s work and money just randomly be deleted?
Reality check for people qq-ing about invisible enemies
I just checked in on my reality. It told me serious bugs like this prevent me from having fun, so I should stop playing untill it is resolved. It also told me I should let developers realise exactly how bad the problem is.
To explain how bad it is, allow me to show you this picture of WvW:
Yeah, nothing. Reality check: Game is broken, please fix it.
Siege equipement is known to randomly despawn, sometimes even after being used only minutes before. The weather nodes do not kill them, they just randomly despawn.
Siege equipement CAN last several hours, I’ve seen this plenty of times, and I’ve also seen them vanish infront of my eyes.
To me, it seems like a bug. I agree however, siege equipement should not despawn, they took time and money to build and should persist (HEAVENS FORBID! PERSISTANCE IN A THEMEPARK MMO!?).
I would love to be able to display my name.
How about this: You get the OPTION to display your name after completing certain WvW related achievements? Having played in WvW a long time (resulting in obtaining said achievements) surely would mean you become a bit more ‘known’ in the world, just like in real life, soldiers or generals that do extraordinary things are remembered for it.
Or at the very least, WvW titles related to your experience and performance in WvW, rather than just ‘Invader’ all the time.
Edit: Or both!
Elementalists are best used in WvW as support. They got a lot of combo fields and one of the few proffesions with on-demand heal-others, good for helping keep a zerg alive (although they are not nearly as powerfull as guardian support/heals, buff please!). Some decent suppresion AOE as a bonus. Just don’t expect to get many ‘1v1’ kills as a support Elementalist.
I agree with other posters, joining WvW for solo fights is not helping your server. At best you could kill undefended doylaks, but lets face it, good servers secure their supply lines from solo attackers. And good WvW Elementalists support their team.
pedrst.3127Good fights all around but i guess resorting to capping stuff at 5:27 am GMT time is the only way Desolation finds to get some points.
Comming from SFR, I think that is a laughable comment to make.
Anyhow, it seems Desolation simply doesn’t have players in weekends, but we do in week days. Mind you even during primetime our max queue time is about 5 minutes, and most maps never have a queue anymore.
They look nice. Sadly it’s not possible to look at it during normal gameplay since we’re stuck looking at the ground for circles all the time, such a waste of artwork.
You have to stop what you’re doing and look up to see it, or anything else that is above the ground.
[insert FOV comment here]
Yesterday showed Desolation CAN play properly, if it is willing.
Desolation borderlands had no large guild presence and no commander most of the time, we managed to hold the orb most of the day (hackers aside). Not sure what happened after I went to bed but at some point in the night we lost everything to SFR. It shows even pugs can play properly, if they are willing to listen.
Doesn’t mean it went perfectly though, I still gained another 2 people on my ignore list yesterday, a list which seems to be growing almost daily. Hopefully one day it stops growing, which would mean we only have decent people in WvW from Desolation.
(Fun fact: Most of the people on my ignore list are never displayed as playing in WvW and offline a lot, goes to show what type of players find themselves on it.)
Keep up the good work Desolation, we can certainly still pull off a comeback and atleast reach second place.
Edit: Rezo the first part of your signature made me laugh a bit.
(edited by Raap.9065)
Can this be disabled for WvW please?
I said the same line 3-4 times because chat was flooded with spam, so I had to make something very important clear. Normally I get this very often even for saying 2 things but usually it passes after a few seconds, however for some reason right now I’ve had it for over 15 minutes.
15 minutes is a long time in WvW, and very often I am one of only a few people making calls in pugs, which by default means I have to repeat everything atleast twice. This limitation prevented me from saying ANYTHING with any means, and we actually lost a keep during this period.
Please remove this from WvW, or atleast reduce it.
(edited by Raap.9065)
This cheating is getting out of hand, they are playing a ball game with the orb in Desolation borderlands aswell as Kodash[DE] borderlands, and that’s just our matchup.
Can we get some ingame GM’s actively monitoring and banning these people? This is beyond pathetic. I don’t care if it’s a bandaid solution but SOMETHING has to be done and in other games active ingame support worked fine for handling cheaters and bots.
It’s mostly the same people that have been doing this for days, a few active bans should slow down the problem and surely stop others from doing it when they see they actually get banned for it.
Do something ArenaNet, until lyou got a solid detection system, send out ingame GM’s to catch these people in the act.
Thanks for hacking the orb AGAIN on Deso borderlands, Kodash, you kittens.
First you take the keep without flagging it, then you fly the orb to it from Garrison.
ArenaNet, kittening do something about this bullkitten, and Kodash, that’s what, 6 times in this matchup you stole it by cheating? Sad, just sad.
“Oooh but hes just one guy can’t blame server” – Then hand us the orb back and stop being so kittening lame.
What about arrow carts in defense? Cost nothing and destroys everything.
6 silver or 6 badges a piece, gets destroyed by AOE on most walls even if placed at the very edge of a wall, only usefull in numbers on large walls where AOE can’t reach them, but still easy to counter with ranged siege equipement.
Downed someone with arrow cart focus firing? Great work, too bad the other 49 attackers can almost instantly revive the downed player before you can kill him or another one (Hint Arenanet: combat revive speed needs a nerf in both WvW and PvE).
(edited by Raap.9065)
- Doors should be invulnerable to player attacks
I like this idea. Think about the amount of more usefull things mindless zergs could be doing if they couldn’t autoattack gates, and it would make zerging a lot harder; they’d actually have to bring siege equipement.
Regarding WvW upgrade cost, agreed, I spend loads of gold on upgrades each day in WvW and I’d love to see upgrades no longer require gold, but a combination of karma and badges instead (with badges actually dropping from players and objectives).
