Do You Enjoy Massive Zerg Content?

I absolutely adore zerging. I’m kind of a painfully shy person in game, so it’s really hard for me to party up with people. Finding a zerg and running with them allows me to sort of ease into the social aspect of the game, so I have someone to play with until I work up the courage to speak up.

Also, the feeling of running with a pack is kind of glorious. Call me crazy, but I have howled like a wolf IRL while running with zergs from one point to another!

EDIT: I’m with Vol. MMOs are all about the massive numbers of people. “Massively Multiplayer.” 5-man instances work for Torchlight II, but I play MMOs for the people.

I’ll give you 2 weeks before you go back on most of what you said.

I play since release day and still play several hours each day and love it.

Then you should be in the class of people who suffer the most from the games problems.

Quite a few people have been playing since launch. Just because you don’t like something, doesn’t mean it’s bad. You just don’t like it, and you know…that’s okay.

It’s when people start trying to make their opinion into fact that the problem starts.

I like this game so the game is good for me. You don’t like this game so the game is bad for you.

Neither of us is right. But you shouldn’t assume the OP won’t like it in two weeks, because there are people playing since beta 1 who still like it.

I like the game. I still play many hours a day. That doesn’t make the direction the game is going good, it’s just the stuff from launch/shortly after is still interesting to me.

MMOs should never have been designed to cater to people who work 9-5 and play 1 hour a day around a family life.

Jeez, that’s a bit harsh. Do you not have to work for a living or something?

I’m not criticising the group I mentioned, simply stating that MMOs have never been catered to such players, and as a genre known for such deep character progression and development, methods should never be easily attainable by those with extremely limited time.

I have literally never seen an MMO with deep character progression and development, barring GW2 of course. I’m not sure what MMOs you’ve been playing, but please, do tell!

That said, as far as completion and everything, I totally understand that being hard to attain. I’ll just keep working at it till 2030 and beyond.

Map Completion - Metrics on Player Anger?

Raeysa, I am afraid you can not guest on another server to do WvW, it would have to be a full transfer to do that. As for asking politely, that depends on the situation. By that I mean, to get POI/ vistas etc on the general map, it would not work, as, for one you need to capture most of the towers etc to be able to get them (a rare few can be gotten by scraping the tower).

However, in the context of the jumping puzzels, it is possible to even team up with the so called enemy. It really depends on you both. This sometimes happens in the Obsidian Sanctum (OS) JP, as you cant jump as far whilst in combat. For instance even if I dont ally with an enemy whilst in the OS JP, I would try to determine if they are friendly or not—-just give them a wave or jump up and down in their direction to see their reaction, as some people, just because you are colored red as an enemy can not see past that, and will try to kill you regardless>>.

Wait, so even if the enemy team is willing to let you drop by for PoIs and SPs, you actually can’t get them unless your team possesses the points?

Ugh, there are four of the same and you have to explore them all? That does sound a bit excessive.

Is it possible to guest another server? Or maybe to politely ask the other team to let you just pop over for you PoIs and SPs? I haven’t been there, so I wouldn’t know. I’ve found that asking nicely goes a long way. . . I guess I’m just throwing things out there.

There’s three the “same” (although the locations have different names). Eternal Battlegrounds has a different map. Believe me, you want those homeworld maps to be the same, particularly if you’re a PvE solo type like me. It’s a help, not a hindrance. It’s not as bad as it seems.

You can’t guest to another server for WvW completion anymore. I managed my first completion this way, and it worked well. However, I just completed my second 100% yesterday entirely on my own server, so it is possible. I am a complete care bear, but it took me a little over a month with some luck, being a handy combination of stubborn and patient, and adapting. I’m not particularly epic at WvW, but I kind of feel I’m a little bit better as a player having completed the maps.

I did it part zerg, part solo. No parties (I’m shy). I’m a terribly easy target, even as a mesmer, because I’m fairly clueless, but I suck up my losses and carry on. Maybe I actually learned something about my profession every time. Or about myself: any time I got a bit fed up – and I did, there’s no lying about it – I went and did something else instead (including changing my traits and skills!). It’s not like I had to do WvW all the time. I did bits of it here and there instead, intermingled with things I’ve found more fun traditionally. If your server has teamspeak running, by the way, try to use it. You don’t have to zerg, but it can be helpful or just kitten funny to listen in.

Whether it should be included in 100% map completion? I believe so.

It’s hard if you’ve only done PvE, but then so are dungeons. So are fractals (never done them, and don’t want to!). So’s PvP. So’s some parts of the Personal Story. Even PvE itself can be hard if you’re caught wrong-footed. Personally I think the Tribulation Rift scaffolding, or the Diessa Wall Breach Blitz of Doom are much more intimidating and horrible than anything in WvW, but YMMV. I’ve done them vistas/puzzles enough now to know what I’m doing (maybe there’s something in that?), but they will always have my stomach in my mouth. There’s jumping puzzles I can’t even do and will never be able to. That’s okay. Those aren’t for me. I’ll never have titles for them. I’ll never have all the Dive Master locations because of that (34/38! bah humbug).
Similarly, 100% map completion may not be for everyone. So if you don’t want it, don’t do it. If you do, then… do. And don’t fret about it either way.

Heh, that’s pretty much exactly how I feel. I want to earn that map completion, not have it handed to me!

When will we see dueling?

there’s a lot of “i don’t like it so nobody can have it” mentality here.

if you don’t want to duel, turn the option off. then it won’t even affect you. what’s the big deal?

equally, there is also a lot of “i want it so everybody has to have it” mentality here.

if you want to duel, turn the option on…oh wait, there is no option.

problem sorted.

if a feature is implemented obviously it will be implemented for everyone. what you think there’s gonna be some kind of sign up sheet on the gw2 front page for those interested in dueling? no that’s moronic. luckily if it’s designed with a disable feature then nothing gets c hanged for those who don’t care for dueling. don’t be selfish.

I love how people who want dueling always call people who do not selfish.

So let me ask you some questions please

1. what about people who are dueling in open-world scaling up events for people who do want to do the events- do you see the duelers helping out? Or just scaling the events by their presence and ignoring them?

2. what about the suggestions of having arenas in the main cities with spectator mode?
would that be acceptable?
if not- why ?

1. I imagine ArenaNet would deal with this issue before they released something like dueling. If not, you have a point.

2. Sure, if Anet doesn’t adjust scaling for duels, this sounds fine.

Can we just all get this straight?

Open PvP is a server where anyone can kill anyone. This server sounds like hell to me.

Dueling allows two players to face off. It does not require anyone else to get involved. This is not open PvP.

Many of us want this to happen in the open world to make it more dynamic. Seeing two people dueling while you run around PvE would more or less be like running past some of the dynamic events; you don’t have to participate, but it looks cool and makes the world more randomized and alive. If you are okay with seeing centaurs attack cities, why are you opposed to seeing duels? None of these things affect you unless you choose to participate. In fact, the centaurs are more likely to attack you.

Map Completion - Metrics on Player Anger?

Um, just out of curiosity, have you asked on /map for people to join up and go map exploring? I haven’t been there, but I’ve found that a lot of people tend to be helpful if you just try the chat. I was kind of lonely and discouraged until I started speaking up in chat. People seem to be really relieved when someone does, like everyone was waiting for someone to start up a conversation. That’s how I’ve gotten to a lot of skill points I couldn’t get to myself. I just asked around.

Honestly, I’m a pretty good WvW player, as far as Roaming goes, I knock out the skill points solo with no real problems. The possession gated castles and towers are what really annoy me, because I either have to follow a zerg that it is taking them, or wait for the color on my server to change.

The other huge annoyance for me is that I enjoy exploring new areas and scenery, that’s why I started working on the achievement to begin with, and three of the stupid WvW maps are IDENTICAL! Having to complete the same map three times for one character is just tedious and goes against the very idea of map exploration, which is what got me started on the whole achievement to begin with. I’d still feel forced to be there, but I think I’d be far less disgusted if there were actually four different WvW maps to explore.

Ugh, there are four of the same and you have to explore them all? That does sound a bit excessive.

Just because of this I refuse to ever buy gems, I hope they enjoy the box sale, that’s all they’re getting from me.

Most people who don’t see it as a problem either are from a server that constantly switch colors or are in a dominating server, it’s not so funny when your server is locked with certain color for months.

Is it possible to guest another server? Or maybe to politely ask the other team to let you just pop over for you PoIs and SPs? I haven’t been there, so I wouldn’t know. I’ve found that asking nicely goes a long way. . . I guess I’m just throwing things out there.

From a purely personal perspective, Sure, I was not a happy bunny when I realized I had to do WvW map completion before getting 100% world map completion (over a year ago? something like that). However on the upside, I am kind of grateful it was there, as I would not have even thought of going into WvW beforehand, thinking it was for elite players only. No idea where I got that notion from, but there we go lol.

It’s not for elite players only?

It’s for elite roaming players, AND mindless zerg fest players. The mindless zerg fest players follow little blue commander tags around and basically feels the same as doing a Queensdale/Frost Gorge champ train, occassionally enemy zergs collide, and everyone in the smaller one dies. The elite roamers go around solo or in small groups and kill each other, as well as amusing themselves by ganking all the poor sucker PvE players who got tired of the zerg not leading them to the places they need for completion and tried to head out on their own.

^That’s the microcosm of crap that I’ve been forced into just so I can get the title I wanted. Keep in mind, I just wanted the title and achievement, didn’t even realize it was a requirement for a Legendary until I completed the entire world map and was sitting at 95%. How did I make it that far with out knowing? I was having fun doing map exploration solo so I didn’t bother joining a guild, and had been in a total of 3 parties the entire time I was playing up to that point. It never occured to me that the 100% completion ticker on the world map wasn’t referencing, you know, the world map…

What if there’s an option to block their duel requests?

Every single time this comes up in an MMO, those who don’t duel are automagically labeled a carebear. There are plenty of fights in WvW and sPvP is over there —-—->

Labeled by who? The majority of the GW2 community is pretty decent. Yeah, a few kittens are going to namecall, but they can be blocked and reported. A good MMO community kind of just runs toxic players out of town. That’s what I’ve seen in GW2 so far. I’ve seen a handful of toxic players, but every time, the rest of the map tells them to take a chill pill, leave people alone, stop harassing. People stand up for each other. I don’t see why this would change just because of dueling.

This is exactly why dueling isn’t going to happen.

What if there’s an option to block their duel requests? I understand people are concerned about repeated duel requests, but I’m sure Anet would be sensible enough to provide a way out of that.

Map Completion - Metrics on Player Anger?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Raeysa Penrose.8450

I’ve been saying this since the first two weeks of the game when I realized it myself.

Having mixed PVP and PVE activities is fine in and of itself. But forcing PVP into a PVE achievement, or vise versa, is always, I repeat, always bad. There is no arguing that.

That being said, I don’t believe they will change it simply because I’ve been here since the BWE and the head start watching it remain the same.

For all the good things about ArenaNet, they are so bad at polish and bug fixing that it’s nothing short of astounding. I’m sure they could do it, of course, but it’s like they just don’t feel it’s worth devoting resources to.

This isn’t a bug, it’s a design flaw and a glaringly obvious one. To compound the issue is the fact that Colin said he didn’t feel it needed to be changed. There’s no chance of changing it once one of the head guys says nada.

Still, I won’t quit over it. But I do block it out of my mind when I look at that medal, forever stuck at 95%. Could I do it? Probably. Will I? Never. I made a pact. I will never enter WvW at all until it’s changed. And I’ll be happy to continue that till the servers shut down. But that part of the achievement is not happening.

/rant over

Honestly, that sounds like more of a personal problem than anything. If you’re perfectly capable of doing it but don’t want to, no one can make you, and that’s just fine.

The point is that it shouldn’t be that way and even though I know it probably won’t change, I refuse to do it on principle.

Okay. Have fun with that. If you ever change your mind, I could certainly use a hand navigating the map because PvP/WvW sounds scary.

I really can’t wrap my head around the idea that people are opposed to consensual dueling in the open world. Just click “No.”

Or heck, make it a toggle on the Hero page. “Allow Dueling? Y/N.” That way these folks wouldn’t even be bothered with having to decline duels.

The problem is, that Duel-Spammer don’t accept a “No” .. so you get a popup in the middle of a fight and have to click “no” just to get the next popup 1-2 seconds later, and that normally 3-4 times at least in a row.

Its just another instruments for idiots to harass people when they can’t directly gank them with open PvP.

This is why people are suggesting an option to toggle whether not you are available for duels at all. If you are toggled on, you are available to be invited, but you can still turn them down. If you are toggled off, people can’t even challenge you to a duel, which eliminates the spammers.

Also, if you want to stay toggled on but you are being bothered by some individual, I’m sure there will be an option to block the kitten.

I don’t know about you, but flashy, dynamic particle effects are something I consider very important when choosing a game, and I am quite sure there are many others who feel the same. Not everyone plays just for the technical side of the combat. Some of us love the aesthetic side too. We love the feeling of casting flames and lightning at people. The flashier the effect, the more powerful we feel, which is for a lot of the reason to play the game. Real life is a little sad and unrewarding. GW2 makes us feel strong, and particle effects are an integral part of this.

Randomize world event timers

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Raeysa Penrose.8450

Raeysa Penrose.8450

While there are timers, bosses don’t start unless you complete the meta events. Even then, if you don’t have enough friends or guildies to help you, you wouldn’t be able to 1) complete the meta in time or 2) can’t kill the boss in time.

You should be thankful these events cycle on a timer. Otherwise, you’d have to get lucky to come across enough people on the map willing to do the event with you when you log on.

You need to go back and read my original suggestion about how maybe it should start only when enough people are there to start it. Plus this way world events and bosses could be added to the LFG and then Guilds could advertise they were forming a group to kill w/e and more people could just join though the LFG as well. Of course the LFG lacks in the area of adds for open world areas. I have yet to see anybody asking for any groups in this and yet this idea would make it very likely that it could be used that way.
Also they would need a way for us to allow forming of much larger groups, maybe upgrade to the commanders to allow a list of squad members so a cmd’r can know when they have enough to go ahead and start.

I think what it comes down to is that there are a lot of other issues that need to be addressed as a preliminary to randomizing world bosses and the like. Simply randomizing them without first handling the issues with grouping, squads, guilds, etc. would only serve to scatter and discourage players.

How You feel about Weapon Utilities?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Raeysa Penrose.8450

Raeysa Penrose.8450

Sorry, I’m not a very technical thinker, so I don’t quite follow. How does adding interchangeable skills on weapons cause issues?

Well, the easiest answer I can give you is that the more permutations you offer, the more likely someone will come across a gamebreaking combination that absolutely ruins any competitive or content balance.

If you think the class balance in GW2 was bad, GW1 was a million times worse. People developed builds that pretty much allowed you to solo content meant for 8 players, or hero builds that let you walk all over Hard Mode content while asleep. There were so many skills that every time one ridiculously gamebreaking build was corrected, it simply opened up three more.

You may not think there’s a problem with that; well, apparently the people who are developing this game DO, and their skill mechanics reflect that they felt it was a rather BIG problem.

Ohhh so it’s a balancing thing. Makes sense! Thank you! I have been wondering for the past year why we can only learn the 5 weapon skills at the beginning of the game and never any more. It’s a little sad to hear that interchangeable skills would be so difficult to implement sanely, but it makes sense to be careful with that.

So. . . new weapons, right?

I would adore open world dueling! So long as I can toggle of duel availability like some people have mentioned, I feel like it would help a ton with the feeling of a dynamic, living world. Wandering around the map and encountering duels, cheering people on, etc. . . . this sounds like exactly the world I would love to inhabit. PvE lovers can keep focusing on PvE, but with the added bonus of spectating random events that are truly random, because they are initiated by other players, not some algorithm in the system. Oh my lord, this entire idea is wonderful! I might even eventually work up the courage to toggle “available for duels” at some point!

Map Completion - Metrics on Player Anger?

I personally like to PvP or WvW only when I know I’m not going to get too involved and ruin my day.

The map completion requirement pulls me in pre-involved.

However, if they must do it this way I have one really easy suggestion: Take out all of the cap point POIs and vistas and replace them with open points.

I actually had a lot of fun despite my reluctance when I ran around WvW capping the camp POIs and open vistas. Waiting around for the right server rotation or time of day for the keep and tower POIs however… not fun.

Oh, they’re not all available when you go into WvW? I assumed it was just a matter of getting to the points without dying. Sounds inconvenient, but hey, it still beats trying for map completion in real life. ^u^

How You feel about Weapon Utilities?

Or why not implement for e.g 5 more skills for each weapon per class so we can actually construct more builds by swapping out weapon skills aswell rather than just the weapon.

Because that would be the first step to lead the entire game down the same self-destructive road that made GW1 a D-list title for its entire run?

Any second now somebody is going to come in screaming SIX MILLION PLAYERS, and to that I say, it took them eight years to get that playerbase, GW2 gained more than half that in nine months. And GW1 was released when there was a lot less competition in the MMO market than there is now. It’s about time people admit it was a niche title that didn’t appeal to most people, and justifiably so. Such a build system as it had is rife with problems unaddressable except by limiting the build system.

This post is so full of misinformation and biasing that I care not disect it and continue a pointless conversation.
Especially considering my idea is not based off GW1 or even suggesting to go back to the GW1 skill style. (Although it would be a kitten ton better than the dribble we have now).

Biasing? Even bias wouldn’t be applicable in this situation but biasing, what exactly am I biasing against? Make your own point, don’t rely on buzz words, but if you must, use one that is applicable and use it correctly.

You’re suggestion is that we be able to switch every skill on our bar correct? That was one of the major problems with GW1 and many other games similar to it. You cannot have a build system which allows for 100% build variance and an expanding skill pool, it doesn’t work, it hasn’t ever worked, it never will work. MTG proved this a decade before GW1 was even a twinkle in the design teams eye. You have to limit either the build system or not expand the skill pool. In an MMO, where progression is very important to a lot of the playerbase, never expanding the skill pool was likely never an option, hence the limits on building.

Sorry, I’m not a very technical thinker, so I don’t quite follow. How does adding interchangeable skills on weapons cause issues?

Map Completion - Metrics on Player Anger?

As someone has already said, you could take an opposing perspective and say it’s unfair to have to play PvE to get map completion. Why can’t we get completion just by playing PvP/WvW?

I think an alternative way to approach this might be to have “PvE completion” and “WvW completion” as two separate things, and then require both for full map completion. That way people who only want to play PvE can get an achievement, people who only want to play WvW get an achievement, and then there’s a bit of bonus if you do both.

Because quite frankly, anyone who chooses to try ALL the content, whether or not it’s his cup of tea, should be rewarded for it.

EDIT: (I for one am terrified of WvW. I’m still going to go for it and see if I can find some kind souls to help me get my completion.)

Option to disable burning effects

The problem with adding this option is that it would provide an advantage in PvP/WvW combat, which would mean everyone would have to turn off particles in order to stay competitive. From what I’ve seen, any kind of change that runs the risk of unbalancing the playing field for people who do and don’t select the given option (darker nighttimes, for example) tends to be a problem.

That said, I suppose we could petition for this option only in PvE?

Randomize world event timers

As people have said, not everyone has the time to wander the map and take on randomized events as they happen. I for one would adore that kind of immersion, but it’s just not realistic and fair to other players who have also paid for the game, but only have a couple of hours a day.

Also, please don’t be too quick to condemn zergs. Some of us love the feeling of running with a pack, feeling like part of something huge. If it’s not your cup of tea, that’s just fine. We won’t bother you.

EDIT: As for timed events taking away from the dynamic world, I feel you on that. Maybe the timed events can stay as they are, but some other optional content can be added that happens on a more random basis?

Black Lion Keys

I might be wrong, but to me it looks like this week’s sale is an indicator that people are starting to steer clear of buying keys. It’d be a more consistent product if it delivered on odds people actually expect before doing a bit of research. What these keys actually get you is well below what most people would consider fair odds, especially when the claim tickets and skins you can get for them are the most prominently advertised rewards for the keys in the gem store.

I understand that they need to make money on these things and that most money spent on gems is from a minority of players the industry likes to call “whales” who pour money into gems constantly, and I understand that the industry is still early in getting market research on this sort of thing. However, I’d hate to see something happen to the game if they continue these practices, as the line between a mystery box and a scam is still a bit blurry in the social gaming industry.

Fair enough. I’m used to mystery boxes being a hit-or-miss kind of thing in lots of games, so I suppose I just automatically ignored them as anything reliably worthwhile. I forget sometimes that not everyone is familiar with these sorts of conventions, and yes, there should be some kind of description so players can decide whether or not they want to chance it.

If it’s true that NCsoft is kitten about having their culture misrepresented a little, then once again, I am ashamed to be Korean. I think any culture that feels it has a monopoly on its aesthetics in this day and age is backwards and selfish and downright elitist.

I’ve refused to make a human character to this day because when I play human, I want to play something closer to me, and it’s downright impossible to make a character who looks more than 25% Asian. It’s kind of sad that a Korean-owned company is preventing Koreans and other Asians from feeling like a part of the world they desperately want to inhabit.

Thanks for the tip! I tried the searchbar a while back and figured it was just a minor bug. Pretty disappointed to find out that this a continuous problem. Poor form; if Anet is too busy to fix it right now, they could at least remove it until it actually works. :P

The low drop rate on keys is fine imo… it’s the crap you get in the chests that’s dreadful. It’s mostly one-time extremely minor convenience garbage and things you just use or throw away as soon as possible because it’s not worth the space in your bags. If they’d clean up the rng a bit for opening them they’d be worth getting with gems… maybe.

Thanks for the warning. ^u^ It kind of figures.

Honestly, though, Anet needs to earn money somehow, since it doesn’t ask for subscription. Basically, if we really care about the contents of the chests, if we really care about the bonuses, we’ll pay. If not, just ignore them. I just throw them in my bank and cross my fingers, but I don’t sweat it for a second.
