A guildie told me if I join a yoloq game and start to lose, I can leave and avoid having the loss go on my record? There’s no downside for me if I do this? He’s wrong, right?
i’ve heard that PvP balance team are not balancing anything because PAX is going on and the patch after PAX is over is not big balance patch either only the one after is a big balance is patch true.
There is no “PvP balance team” – there is only the balance team.
Yes, they are not going to make sweeping changes to balance before PAX. That is not completely because of PAX. Also, bigger patches don’t always equal better.
That’s not to say that certain things should or shouldn’t be adjusted, btw.
Allie,
First and foremost, thank you for being active in this thread in spite of some posters responding in an ambiguous or disrespectful manner.
From what I’ve read, it appears that the “PvP Team” is limited in their capacity to exact balance changes catered specifically to PvP. Viewing other games, (WoW comes to mind and certainly GW1), skills in PvP sometimes act differently in the PvP areas of the game than in the PvE areas. If ANET would allow the PvP team to balance PvP as it sees fit by adjusting skills in PvP differently from the PvE aspect of the game, balance might be more feasible.
Currently, rewards are few, grinds are long and game types are one. To be more specific on these points, you have certainly done a great job with allowing new skins to be used in PvP and without asking for PvP exclusive skins (too much dev time/resources), legendaries could be introduced into PvP.
The above might contradict my statements about long grinds as a legendary weapon in PvP shouldn’t be easy to acquire. The rank finishers are cool. Grinding ranks does take an absurd amount of time. To my knowledge, there are a handful of players who have been grinding many hours a day and are only approaching Rank 70. The rewards for that much effort is a finisher, that’s it. I suggest not only adding additional rewards (discussed below), but lowering the grind. If people want to show their “skill” they can do that with the ideas below. The real reason to lower the grind, is to give players a sense of advancement in PvP. There just really isn’t any. It takes weeks and weeks to get a new finisher AND that’s all you get really, as access to new gear is…lackluster. Perhaps titles specific to the leaderboard are in order? Maybe “glowy” effects on characters as they rank up that carry over into PvE and WvW? Something that sparks people’s interest when they view someone who PvP’s a lot. The beauty of cosmetic things, as you know, is that they don’t help characters be more powerful or effect balance, but they can certainly be a great way to advertise other areas of your game.
PvP in this game, needs some fresh blood. Please stop pushing the current game type. Please. Add new ones. Even if they don’t “work for e-sports.” It really will encourage more people to start getting into PvP. You need a wider player base for e-sports to ever become a reality. It’s that simple. Adding more game types will encourage players to come try them out. I’ll allow every other game that has a successful e-sports competition to solidify my argument here. They all have a large player base. As has been said, cap-the-flag and deathmatch are two wildly popular game types.
Rewards. Guild halls. What’s in them? Portals to a permanent custom server, a mystic forge, target dummies, a portal to Lion’s Arch, PvE crafting tables, etc. The whole nine yards. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, you guys must tie the various aspects of this game together. Encouraging guilds to branch out and focus its resources on encouraging its members to try different game types can only mean profit for you. This can be done by making guild halls cost things only available in WvW and PvP and PvE. Guilds will recruit players who frequent these game types. These players will interact and encourage other guild members to try out areas of the game they were nervous about or disinterested in, becoming a mentor if you will. You get the point.
Lastly, as an aside. With guilds and the way they “build” upgrades/buffs for players. Build qeues MUST be separate for various aspects of the game. A WvW buff should not block a PvE buff. The same should be true for PvP and so on. This allows guilds to focus on more than one aspect of the game without being a detriment to another. Player’s should be encouraged to try all aspects of your game.
I hope I haven’t wasted your time Allie. Thanks for all you do.

It took several weeks for this to sink in. I’m happier with the game now than I ever have been (still working out some of the kinks, but it’ll come with time) as a result.
First thing you need to do – Forget GW1 ever happened. It didn’t exist. It’s a dead-end road heading in a direction that will not be taken any further by ArenaNet. You may have loved it, may have seen it as a sign that there is some hope for AAA online RPG games, but those thoughts do not belong here. They drove back to home, started off in a new direction, and GW2 is somewhere down that road instead. No matter how you feel about the difference, if you focus on all that GW2 isn’t that GW1 was, and all that GW1 wasn’t that GW2 is, you’ll never be satisfied here.
Second thing you need to do – Realize that GW2 does not take itself seriously. This is not where you come for deep lore or a sense of doom you’re struggling to overcome. This isn’t where you play to get a sense of being in a typical fantasy novel/movie. GW2 is lighthearted. It’s Disney, not Game of Thrones (the book). The Dreamer will not feel out of place if you look at it this way. GW2 is intentionally goofy. It’s not a mistake. They’re not incompetent. It is too pervasive in all aspects of the game from the writing to the content releases to some of the skins for weapons and armor to be happenstance. They’ve done an incredible job creating a very easy to digest setting where you can goof off with friends and strangers in various ways in a beautifully rendered fantasy world. Though less extreme, it’s like watching an episode of Jake and the Netherland Pirates with your child. It is excellent for what it is. If you approach one of those episodes and expect Pirates of the Caribbean, you’ll be sorely disappointed at no fault of the producers or incredible talent behind the show.
GW2 is a birthday cake, not an elegant desert, by design. By being lighthearted and accessible, it makes it easier to work with the gem shop without affecting immersion because they have already found a way to provide an experience that does not require or offer that immersion. They can provide rewards that appeal to a broader audience. Not everyone wants Twilight. Some people want Dreamer. They want Kudzu and Moot.
If you can approach GW2 like the carnival/theme park it was clearly intended to be and just enjoy taking part in it, you’ll be far happier. I am, and while I realize I’ll have to look elsewhere to get the experience I was originally expecting, I’m glad to spend a little time in their new vision of Tyria while I wait. The game is fun, the graphics are great and it’s still one of the better MMO experiences you can find.
I’m afraid a few, specific instances of “goofiness” do not, your point, make.
I can summon just as many “serious” things about GW2. Look at the personal story. People being murdered, loss of life everywhere, struggles to survive. It was not pokemon bubble bounce bumblekittenery.
So, no, I don’t think I’ll be changing my mind to what you envision the game as. i think I’ll keep expecting what they’ve ALREADY released and have stated and/or hinted, is to come.
Bubye.
A guildie just told me that because ectos aren’t on the same table as “rare” materials that you can use a basic salvage kit and and still have the .9% chance to get an ecto from rare items. Is this true? Does someone have a link to hard evidence?
I’ve won the solo qeue matches several times. All paid tokens. Wtf is going on?
You’ve had pie and cookies this whole time and I haven’t gotten any??
Greetings fellow WvWers,
We at Sanctum of Rall have managed to climb our way into Tier 1. The past 2 weeks have been great fights across all servers. We took 3rd place the first week (it was pretty close, I believe we lost by 3,000 or so) and 2nd place the second week by around 20,000 over the 3rd place finisher.
Generally, we seem to have pretty solid NA coverage. Our gaps in the Oceanic and European time-frames are being filled slowly but surely. That being said, we’d always like those gaps to be filled quicker than they currently are. Before you dismiss the idea, you should know that we do have organized WvW guilds that have transferred over to cover these time slots so those of you considering a solo move won’t be surrounded by pugs wondering what they should be doing. It’s an absolute rarity to be on EB or SoR at any time of day or night and not have at least one commander running about.
There are many prominent WvW guilds on Rall. The really great thing about that is that we have a community teamspeak whereby these guilds organize who is going to be on what Borderlands so that we can arrange an optimal plan of defense/attack. If you do decide to transfer over, a shout in SoR Lion’s Arch for information regarding WvW guilds will definitely get you a polite response (also any Borderlands will as well).
Some prominent guilds that are commonly seen on the battlefield (I’ve no idea whether these guilds are recruiting or not and don’t claim to know their policies etc. Apologies to any guilds that didn’t want to be mentioned. Also note this list is not exhaustive – apologies to those I ignorantly left out):

Pain Train Choo [Choo]
Caedas [CDS]

We are extremely friendly to our fellow Rallians and encourage people who have never done WvW before to come over as well as seasoned veterans. We’re always happy to teach new folks because we know we’ve all been there before! We also have an awesome PvE and SPvP community as well. Transfer today!

Alright ladies and gentlemen, let the carnage begin anew!

Awesome stuff man.
No idea who any of these people are.
Curious as to why Muke Muscleshell, who is obviously the greatest GW2 player and also the best video game player planet Earth will ever see, is not on the list? Is this post meant to be blasphemous?
Why would they delete this thread? So far, 5 people have voted that I am, in fact, the greatest SPvPer ever.
Why do I say this as if it’s fact? Simple. If someone takes the time to respond it means they care about my words. If they care about my words it means they value my opinion. If they value my opinion it means they respect me. If they respect me it means they fear that I am, in fact, better than them and desire my approval. The more people fearing that I am better than them and wanting my approval the more likely I am to be the greatest SPvPer ever.
That’s science people. Who else wants to boost the girth of my electronic manhood?

As you can see from the title, many people believe me to be the greatest SPvPer whom will ever live. As much as I try to gracefully deny such statements, they never seem to stop. How would there be drama if we’re on the same team? Also, why the fear Riven? Afraid BG folks will come to SoR?
Okay, so this thread has a lot of BG NA people not wanting to lose their winning time slot and some FEAR haters. That’s neat.
Moving back to the topic… SoR is known for it’s WvW and PvE. Other servers, not so much. It’s a great server for any Aussie/European that wants to experience the game in it’s many forms alongside the greatest video game players that have ever lived… ever. srs.
And someone mentioned cookies earlier? Ya, we stole em and everyone knows stolen food tastes better.

Gentlemen, the masses spoke. They were in threads all day everyday telling ANET not to reset the ratings and they were right to do so.
It doesn’t matter if it’s what is causing the problem, currently, it’s the only solution for people on dead WvW servers. So, I reiterate, xfer and enjoy.
Hello,
We spoke in the past when we were joined at the hip in T2. At that point in time, SoR was winning during NA primetime and our complete lack of coverage left us vulnerable to the swarming BG masses during the night.
I asked if you would be willing to transfer to SoR in an attempt at being the best server out there. I am wondering, now that both our servers have proven to be capable of T1, if you might reconsider. I still feel with our NA coverage/skill and your NA nighttime coverage/skill that SoR would become the games gold standard for awesomeness.
As it stands now, (and as you can see from the scoreboards), SoR wins during NA primetime in T1, but the JQ and SoS zergs during other coverage times take the lead during the weekdays.
So, come on over and let’s do this thing. Please get a hold of Indo Xx, Miasmic Spiritsong, Purp Nurp, Irmo, Muke Muscleshell or Bremstone for details.
Edit: Honestly, this invitation is open to all Oceanics/Europeans. Our server is very skilled at PvE as well (for those that don’t want to worry about guesting). We have some avid SPvPers (Myself being one of them) for those that like to WvW and SPvP. So ya, come on over.

(edited by Rambodacious.7495)
And all other servers are having great battles. Transfer to any of them and enjoy WvW.
There are some great fights during NA primetime. The SoS and JQ servers are both very skilled and very fun opponents to play against.
The problem is the same its always been for SoR. We don’t have coverage. It’s not like every night we have 80 invisible thieves refusing to fight you guys. It’s that we have to consolidate ALL our WvW players to one map and then hold 1 keep. That’s all we can afford to do with literally 30 guys across ALL maps.
We really did recruit, no lie. There were oceanics and asians and all manner of folks screaming how they’d watch our backs… I don’t know if they quit or xfered again or???
Anyways, I guess I’ll just enjoy the fights we do get and not look at a scoreboard.
Sometimes when I’m on the phone or something I like to just swim around the water in LA. Seriously, whoever did this, awesome job.
I don’t know if I want all my servers WvW people to drop out of WvW just because they finished the title. We’d be wrapping up about now.
ArenaNet thought this one through. IMO, the math proves out the soundness of their decision … people who stop playing once they have the titles complete will be coming back to WvW for the next 10 years or so. That’s great news!!!
You are assuming that the majority of WvW players is simply there to get the titles, whereas the majority is there to play WvW – any potential titles are just a nice side effect to these people. I doubt that a lot of people play WvW solely for the titles, especially since they are so hard to achieve for a hardcore player, and impossible for a casual.
Me thinks there will be some fine tuning at some point. Maybe not lowering the requirements, but implementing additional titles as you go through the respective tiers.
To me personally titles are so non-descript and bland, I hardly care about them. The WvW achievements act more or less just as a statistics site for me.
Jinx!
Some of the titles in WvW seem impossible to obtain. Let me give you a couple of examples:
In order to obtain the title Ultimate Interceptor in WvW, you need 1,000,000 Dolyak murders. (Source: http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Title).
The maths:
Assuming you played every single day for six years, and I do mean every single day, never taking a day off for birthdays, vacations, Christmas etc. You take 6 years times 365 days =
2190 days
Now we take 1,000,000 and divide it by 2190 to see how many dolyak murders someone needs every single day for six years to obtain this title:
456.621
That’s all guys, just 456 (rounding down)Yak murders every single day, without fail. Now, let’s see how long that would take if I make the math extremely easy.
Here’s another:
Ultimate Fabricator needs 2.5 million supply used. Let’s assume someone has permanent access to a supply camp with 15 supply instead of the normal 10. So, 2.5 million divided by 15 is the number of times he needs to grab 15 supply and use all of it:
166,666.6666667
166,666 times he needs to grab and completely use 15 supply from an upgraded camp. Let’s shove that in our six years of every single day play and we get =
76 of those every single day without fail. He is the buildenest fool I ever did see! Don’t fight anyone and remove all run time to your build area, 76 times a day. Good luck! It’s 114 complete build uses for the 10 supply by the way, every single day, for six years.
Seriously, fix this. It shouldn’t take six years to get anything in this game. These titles should not be easy to acquire, but the numbers for the majority of these titles is absurd.
I’m sure some people will say, I don’t play for titles, that’s fine. However, there’s no reason to even have titles in the game if they’re not realistically obtainable by ANYONE in the populace within a 10 year time-frame. It should take around 4-5 months of effort to obtain the majority of these titles. Never more.
Were back to the same topic. The gem store exists as the ONLY legitimate alleviation of grind. it is structured this way on PURPOSE. No where does it say you have to use RL money to purchase gems, but they certainly remove any choice from casual players.
Fanbois will now come in and say, but you don’t have to! I will respond by saying, I know that, i just explained that you dont have to because you can grind for 2 years. They’ll then say, but you dont NEED a legendary. I will counter by saying, it’s all there is OR I’ll say i want a new set of gear for a different build and that’s going to be 100g. They’ll continue to not read and/or comprehend and this thread will continue to get made, day in and day out.
Welcome to GW2. It really does come down to put up with it, or leave. ANET WILL NOT ever remove the grind. That would kill profits.
Furthermore, I’m not acquiring experience for the sections of today’s daily that correlate with yesterdays daily. For example, 50 kills. I’ve been doing events in Orr for around 45 minutes and have killed well over 200 enemies. No update to the window and no experience. It would appear as though I am unable to complete today’s daily.
If you log out in the heart of the mists and dont log back in until after the daily resets, then your dailies will list the previous days requirements.
This will not fix itself by logging out/changing zones/or logging on a new character.
If you had the cash and actually played a class that frequently uses a greatsword, would you build an Eternity?
What if it had footsteps?
Have they said whether or not it will have footsteps in the future? I was thinking it would, but they just came out and polished some legendaries, but not Eternity, so I assume it’s not supposed to have footsteps?
/agree
An incredibly easy way to get loads of people into the mists.
I suspect that the danger is that it would give the impression that spvp is a farming mini-game, rather then a stand-alone competitive game.
Small price to pay for resurrecting SPvP.
Dear ANET,
Legendary weapons require individuals to enter into WvW. They can avoid WvW combat to an extent, but they are still vulnerable to attack during jumping puzzles. In short, they must PvP in order to get their PvE loots.
This has led to many people, who would not have otherwise been interested in WvW, to become so. It is certainly not the exclusive reason for WvW’s popularity, and I’m not claiming as such, but I feel it’s undeniable that it has ended up bringing some people to WvW. I’m also quite certain that many people initially complained about this and probably still do, but you’ve stuck to your guns.
To that end, the time has come to introduce the PvE population to SPvP. By allowing the SPvP daily to give a laurel, you will increase SPvP’s popularity exponentially. Further, you might find a few people who exclusively SPvP becoming interested in PvE.
There’s no reason to have an invisible wall separating them. Let me say that again, there’s no reason for the wall because I’m not advocating that PvE gear come in or that PvP gear go out. All I’m saying is, it’s an excruciatingly easy adjustment that would improve player interaction. It would take a programmer an hour or less to code in laurels being attached to the SPvP daily, literally one hour. Think of all that could be gained from such a move.
Remember, there is the “Play Game” button in the bottom left of the hotjoin NPC. This button matches you up against equally skilled individuals. So as long as this was brought to people’s attention, they wouldn’t be getting “stomped” by seasoned players when trying to complete their daily.
Just a thought from a loyal customer.

Can anyone verify that the above is the correct recipe? I’ve shoved around 15 or more Paid Tokens in there now and nothing.
My only wish is that prioritize bugs that are actually game breaking… rather than reporting an aesthetic bug..
100 gold says the servers are brought down in a couple hours and this kitten gets fixed. This will be the ONLY thing patched. Seriously, someone bet me.
How about the Corrupted line of weapons? The PvP locker lists them as “Frozen.” I know about the bow, which seems to be a bug, but how about the others like the greatsword?
While we’re at it, we should post the thread where I’m assuming we’re getting our information from:
http://www.guildwars2guru.com/topic/55030-pvp-mystic-forge-recipes/
Okay, ANET came out and said this would be a minor patch for us this month and that we’d get a week long trial of TotSS. They did just that. Posts that are complaining that they didn’t do more when they said they weren’t need to re-focus on what should be done in the future and what’s good with the current patch.
I’ll say that having more people interested in SPvP when I went in there was great. I only hope it stays this way. Some suggestions so that it will:
1. The reward system is clunky, but PLEASE, whatever you do, do NOT make rewards a massive grind. We have that in the spvp system already in the form of ranks. I don’t think a new player should have to grind for 4 months to acquire an acceptable looking suit of armor. That being said, rewards should be straight purchasable with glory instead of the clunky crafting system that involves me scouring the internet for random forum posts.
2. The customizable servers need to have the ability (among others) to wager gems. Both teams put in whatever amount of gems they want and it’s winner take all.
3. I’m not sure we should be charged for organizing a personal server. I feel it should be free that anyone can create and shape. These can be closed down upon a few minutes of inactivity to prevent the server becoming clogged. I just don’t know how people will feel about paying to teach newer guildies the spvp scene or trying to have competitive games against in game rivals. These kinds of things bring players to your game and charging them for something you want to happen anyways isn’t the most profitable path.
4. Profiting from spvp should come in other ways. For example, legendaries should become available in spvp. These are purchased with rank points, yes rank points from paids. They are also purchased with the spvp equivalent of laurels that you’ll introduce. This spvp laurel will be rewarded when completing the daily. This ensures that your spvpers will be doing hot join and paid tournaments to keep your population healthy.
5. Once you have the above running, you can implement gem store purchases in the form of spvp skins, cool (seriously, they need to be cool) finishers, black lion equivalent spvp chests and keys that have a chance of dropping random skins/weapons, dyes, bags, and finishers. Lastly, you need to have the pvp locker have a purchasable loadout area. Much like unlocking additional bank slots for gems, this would allow a player to create a build, traits and all, then walk over to the pvp locker and save it. You could have say, 4 of these slots.
6. I also suggest making the /rank emotes more awesome. Don’t get me wrong, they’re cool, but I think for time spent and to attract other people to them they need to be pretty much jaw-droppingly epic the higher rank you go up.
Have a good match guys! SoR will see you next week!

Hello all,
Here is as close to proof as you’re going to get from an individual who spends their time keeping track of and reporting the goings on in the game industry. Enjoy:
After reading that, perhaps you can begin to see why some people express disappointment in the current direction of this video game. Further, before stating your counter-argument(should you be planning to), please come up with at the least, anecdotal facts to support a counter-theory. Thanks!
And this is the nobody conspiracy theorist from the edges of the net. Post is old too. Some guy who used to play CoH or is all broken up over the game not washing his car. He posted that so long ago, saying the game was going to fail and to expect all kinds of bad stuff in the gem store. And what happened? Nothing. Just more hyperbole.
lol “So long ago”. Like 3 months is the MMO equivalent of a decade or something. =D
When the conspiracy theorist are posting that the game is dead every single day for months, but the overflows are still up, it’s easy to group for dungeons, there’s people fumbling over each over at events and wvw ques are still there, three months seem like forever. Get something new, some proof behind something, ANYTHING, you say, and I’ll listen to you. Not this same horse you people have been beating for months.
If I’m to understand you’re counter-argument, it’s:
“Your post completely destroys everything I was saying and now my only recourse is to somehow make the date it was posted invalidate it’s extremely relevant information.”
I understand you Killcannon. I can see that you lack a level of intelligence needed to have a thorough discussion. At this point in time, I’ll leave the thread and wish you well in this life.

Hey man, thanks for doing this.
1: I guess for me (and I assume others on these forums), I’d like to hear not a timeline, but specifically what >kind< of additional game types they’re looking at adding to spvp.
2: I’d also like to know if they are purposefully preventing people from making decent rewards (through gems) in winning tournaments? In order to see what I’m talking about, skim through the second post of this thread:
https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/pvp/pvp/Spvp-destiny-An-important-message/first
3: Lastly, I’d like to know any >specific< future plans they have of tying together the PvE world, WvW world, and SPvP world to not only encourage more people to do each of these three, but also make each one feel universally rewarding.
Thanks!

this Nexon-related post is just a bad piece of writing. If they were so eager to get our money, why aren’t there more “important” things to buy in the store? Ascended items will get available from a lot of other sources too + Anet explained in detail why they brought this new tier… Ignoring the facts in this article and coming up with such a conspiracy theory is low.
What do we have now? We have a lot of problems, yes. We don’t have pay to win in any form. We have only conqust-mode sPvP… the professions are balanced around this, but developer stated that once they feel they have a good core of those maps they introduce other modes for casual-sPvP to test those. We have bunker-builds in sPvP because a lot of players enjoy this kind of defensive gameplay, it’s not gamebreaking for other players imho… either way Anet stated that they feel bunker builds are too strong currently and players can expect changes.
Some might say: it wasn’t ready at release. When is a MMO truely ready? It’s an ongoing work in progress and changes need a lot of feedback from the huge playerbase. The game was ready enough to spend hundrets of hours there and have tons of fun, without a subscription fee. If you feel burned out, just leave for a month or so… you can return whenever you feel to without having to spend a cent. There is a lot of positive change, just compare the Karka-Event to Wintersday: no more one-time only event, Weapon Skins buyable for a easy attainable curreny (wool socks etc.) as an alternative to buying it in the store,…
If they would need our money so bad, why haven’t I felt the need to spend a dollar in the store? I have 4 bank-slots, a bag-slot, 1 character slot… all of that payed with ingame gold. Everything else in the store seems not interesting for me at all. I got exotic gear one or two weaks after I got 80, I don’t care about the Ascended ring and backbag at all since I don’t feel the need for it at all. Dungeons are easily doable with subpar green/yellow gear because this game is about skill, not gear mostly.
so please, tell me where I have to spend RL-money for this game after purchase.
No where Marcus and NO ONE in this thread has claimed that you HAVE to buy gems. What we have claimed is that they have increased the grind. This isn’t deniable. Let me repeat that. It is NOT deniable. It IS fact.
This, among the many other things I’ve mentioned (some of which you agreed with by the way) are the reasons for my current dissatisfaction.
The only response a fanboi can have is “walk away from the game and come back later” which has already been said a couple times and certainly means the game is in a bad state if the only solution is “leave.”
Honestly, I was secretly hoping only a few people saw things the way I do, but it’s just the opposite. So few fanbois are coming to ANET’s undeserving rescue… quite shocking really…
Over 400 hours played for a 60 euro game. That’s 10x more than an average 60 euro game. It has its flaws, it has its good points. Overall I enjoy it and since I don’t need to subscribe I am okay with it. It’s a brand new game, poor choices were made, let’s hope they listen to the community and make it better. All the games we compare new games to didn’t improve overnight or were awesome from day 1, it took time, hard work and a community supporting it. Everyone is entitled to say whatever they want, but if you dislike it so much, why not play something else? You aren’t ‘obliged’ to stay through a subscription so go out, enjoy some other games and come back when you feel you can enjoy it again.
But isn’t saying “yes, the game sucks now, come back in a couple years” kind of… wrong? I mean, should anyone have to do that with a “good” game? Isn’t what you described the very essence of a “bad” game? “Go play something else cause this sucks” has always meant bad game to me in the past…
Sadly this is how I feel as well.
Last boss just broke my heart.
Combat is, well it’s alright I like the fact that there is only 8 skills I can use at any given time but whoever thought it was a good idea to just go from hundreds of skills that each class had to this system and claim that you have more or the same amount of character build customization is just idiotic, guess what I see a guardian with a great sword coming at me I know exactly what hes going to do.PvP is kinda useless, unless you’re all about bragging rights, but since it’s WvW who are are going to brag to? Your own server? And the most hilarious think about it is, if you’re dominating in WvW you get a few mob to spon so you can go kill em for the loot, but farming is being penalized…
Which brings me to my last point, I swear I read it time and time again that Anet don’t want people to grind for anything to achieve what they want to achieve.
You want acended gear? You have to farm fractals… and on top of that they still don’t have a group finder of any kind so you’re left with shouting in LA for an hour that you feel like doing fractals.
Most of the people will go and farm for the money but screw that with the anti farm in the game that’s a bit of a bummer, and who in the world in Anet, a company that’s all against the grinding decided to put in legendary weapons as a reward for the BIGGEST grind I’ve ever seen in ANY mmorpg game.I’m sure the irony is not lost on the developers, especially the poor sods who participated in the manifesto video.
Every bad decision, such as the FotM, the ascended gear, the reductions of open-world reward, character-bound dyes, etc, can be directly traced to the design turn-arounds post-June; and every single one of them is at the behest of the monetisation department that came along as part of the shares buyout deal from Nexon.
NX currency is just around the corner, I fear, as soon as the current player-hemorrhaging reaches a peak when March draws to a close, and the true business model brought in with the shares deal has had it’s predictable effect.
Ya know, I was going to ask you what you’re talking about, but I did a quick google search first. This is what I found:
It all makes a ton of sense now…
I followed this game before it’s release for around 3 years. Watched every developer podcast, read every interview, was active on the forums (these official forums didn’t exist) and was generally a giant fanboi.
I’ve played the game since release. Here are my thoughts:
The personal story was alright for the first 30 character levels. It was not good. It was not bad. It was alright. Once you get to the Lion’s Arch story section and the TERRIBLY written slapstick moronic writing ensues it takes an awful turn for the worst. The individual who thought the Zhaitan fight should be realistic and should require players to use giant cannons to kill him in the most repetitive manner possible needs to be fired. Reality should ALWAYS take a back seat to fun. Spamming a cannon shot for literally 10 minutes was the least fun I’ve ever had in a boss encounter. Literally, ever. In short, overall, the personal story was bad. Not awful, but a SOLID bad.
Combat is boring as hell. I have 5 skills I can use frequently, a few more skills I can use occasionally, and an elite skill I (generally) can’t use very often at all. Are there more skills than this? Of course, but I can’t use them in a given encounter. I’m locked in and all that character diversity is gone as soon as combat starts. Just about every single MMO I’ve ever played (even the bad ones) had more diversity in combat.
PvP is mundane. The fact that the developers came out and stated yesterday that they’re going to be pushing the conquest game type as the “competitive tournament game mode” made my jaw drop to the floor. For 6 months people have been screaming in the forums that this game type is unpopular and provides only 1 metagame revolving around a boring playstyle – bunkers.
CONSTANT nerfs to the economy that have increased the grind in this game to ridiculous levels has brought me to the point of not wanting to PvE at all. Scrounging for hours to acquire 1 gold (I’m exaggerating, but still) isn’t acceptable. If you have no end game content and the only thing you can think of is to increase the length of PvE grinds, then you need to be fired as a game developer. CONTENT keeps players. Not near infinite grinds. CONTENT. This isn’t a new concept.
These are my thoughts. What are yours?
This was my first impression too. AOE damage was a concern I never saw mentioned on the forums, yet now it’s some “pressing issue” they hear a lot of complaints about?
If 100 people on here made a top ten list yesterday of “things most complained about on the forums” I don’t think AOE damage would make the list on ANY of them.
Really not happy with what they’re up to here. They need to consider just saying “We were wrong, we’re not going to do this at all”. Not do what they want to do, which is force it through then say “We’ve considered all of your feedback and will keep an eye on the developments”
Would have to totally agree with you there, Minion of Vey.
Where have all these complaints about AoE been lurking?
And as others have pointed out, when they design so many events and encounters around player’s being attacked by hordes of beasties at once, should the new solution really be to focus on single-target damage?
Perhaps single-target will be buffed enough to compensate, but surely, due to the refusal to split PvP/PvE player skills, thus abandoning the system they used in Guild Wars, this will only create a new cycle of nerfs when people are finding single-target damage too high in PvP to counter, due to a lack of dedicated healers.
Seems like they are spinning the PvP-centric balance roundabout that games like World of Warcraft have been on for the better part of a decade, but for their own stated reasons of keeping skill-sets and ‘learning curves’ short, and theoretically easier to understand for all.
I really do not recall people complaining about the skill-split system in Guild Wars. Designing this iteration of their franchise with all the combat depth of a puddle in order to maintain ‘accessibility’, coupled with the inevitable rounds of nerfs from complaints stemming out of PvP, will leave the game-world starved for the dynamics they so professed to be including, and the constant re-invention of play-styles that has driven the original Guild Wars for so long will be nowhere to be found.
There is a veritable boatload of skills in Guild Wars, the vast majority of which contain different versions of themselves dependent upon what aspect of the game you are involved in.
And the game benefited hugely from the diversity.
But I really do not recall reading anyone complaining at all about AoE in the PvE world, despite the fact that these changes will affect it enormously.
Deja vu.
Perfect.
Please be respectful as I do not want this thread to be locked. For those that disagree, I saw flames and denial, but little to no counter-arguments. Please be specific in your disagreements and also try and discuss how the game would be better impacted by everyone running around doing single-target damage all day. Really, I’d like you to outline it for me.
It isn’t gameplay imbalances for the love of all. It is yet another (not so carefully) crafted way to nerf advancement, increase the grind (which is all this game is), and all but force people into purchasing gems with RL money.
You do also realize they’re “changing ORR” at the end of this month also right? You honestly think these changes will keep the only reliable and soloable way to farm money intact? HAH!
I honestly don’t know what their logic is. Do they think people will stick around? Do they think other games won’t have more to offer if all they do is nerf GAME MECHANICS for PROFIT instead of for BALANCE?
My prediction, which sadly won’t be disprovable until the end of 2013, is that this game’s population decreases by a little more than 50% by years end and NEVER recovers. It will most likely hover around those numbers and slowly decay over the next year or two. I can only pray that future game devs will look back at GW2 and say “Wow, I should learn that greed can easily destroy great game mechanics if allowed to run rampant and that ignoring the purpose of the game, FUN, is a recipe for disaster.”
Jonathan, thanks for the reply. I agree with your mindset, but I hope that this conquest game type is not the only “serious” game type used for tournaments/rankings and the like. I think capture the flag has been very competitive in many other games, would provide a new game play experience through different builds being efficient, and would be fun for all skill levels because it is so intuitive and easy to grasp.
Edit #1: Also, deathmatch would provide yet another gameplay experience change, be competitive, and be easy to grasp. I think WoW managed to do quite well with its deathmatch (arena) system and as always, there’s no reason to reinvent the wheel.
Edit #2: Now that I think about it. You may want to consider putting these game types (whether they are the above or others you guys have in the works) out in the open and recording the data as to what becomes the most popular amongst the hot join/casual spvp crowd to determine which 1 or 2 you decide to promote as Gw2’s “official” competitive gameplay type. Just a thought.

Some interesting responses here and I thank people for taking the time to do so. I will say those that claim PvE and PvP are separate are 100% correct. I shouldn’t have compared the two. However, Enaruki brings up a good point. Anyone can acquire these ranks through time played and not necessarily skill used. Someone else brought up some kind of champion system? (I’m unfamiliar with this).
My questions now are:
1 Should TPvP give vastly superior glory so that the skilled players can acquire these ranks at a faster pace and also have another reason to TPvP? Which I guess means, do they deserve it or should everyone be in the same grindy boat regardless of skill?
2 Should they leave this system at a snails pace and simply provide a new “champion system” or what have you to the more skilled players? A separate grind basically for TPvPers?
There are people that have been doing SPvP daily since the games launch and they’re not at max rank. This makes no sense considering you can be level 80 in PvE in 2-3 days (or less if power leveled through dungeons by guildies). Further, there is little to no reward for ranking up.
Ranks need to be sped up drastically. PvP rewards need to be purchasable with glory rather than the obtuse RNG crafting system currently in place. Neither of these two things were addressed in the letter posted by ANET and both need to be.
The following are the reasons I’m taking an extended break from your game and why I am un-recommending it to everyone I know:
1 People were making a wintersday jewelry piece and salvaging it into ectos. That’s right, they were using game mechanics, not an exploit, and they have all been banned.
2 The PvE end game is a legendary skin grind. That’s it. If you have no desire to grind for a legendary, you’re done. What? Oh, you can get +20 more power than someone from some rings you grind out of fractals after 500 hours /played? Cool. No end game in PvE.
3 WvW is stale. Match-ups change so infrequently and the fact that all hard work is destroyed because you don’t have a night crew is ridiculous. Further, mesmers being far and away a mandatory class makes my class seem like I’m wasting my time/efforts. Portal simply shouldn’t work in WvW at all, ESPECIALLY with culling being here. What’s that? I’m dead? How? I dunno either. Oh, I guess a mesmer portal was opened behind us and 20 invisible people slaughtered us… fun…
4 Wanna play cap and hold PvP? You can! Want to play more of it? Maybe you say? Good, because you can! What’s that? Tired of playing the same game type over and over and OVER AGAIN? Too bad! It’s all we got! To make up for it, we’ll implement an obtuse PvP crafting system based off luck and not directly rewarding you for your efforts, how’s that sound?
I’m out. No you can’t have my stuff. Good luck with your grinds.
Ah okay, ya. So, that would be a way for Anet to control the market conditions of precursors more directly. I like it. Though, it wouldn’t change much if the materials needed to craft them add up to hundreds of gold.
The idea I was getting at is to allow relatively easy access to precursors, but have legendaries remain difficult in an attempt to encourage more people to venture out on the trek. Any way they want to accomplish that goal works for me.
Thanks for the response. Can I get your thoughts on this topic?
