Guild Wars 2

Hey I’m a 29 year old casual gamer from NYC with a long history of MMOs and am so glad to finally play one that doesn’t require me to jump on a gear-grind train!

I’m shy at first but warm up fast when surrounded by fun, silly, open-minded people. I’ve led a couple of guilds in the past. I had a small casual guild in FFXI and a larger casual guild in FFXIV.

I’ve got a fresh lvl 80 mesmer on Stormbluff Isle and I’ll probably be making a handful of alts because I gotta play ‘em all :P I’m not the sPvP type, but I do dabble in WvW. I also like to craft and have cooking at 400 and tailoring at 300.

I haven’t done a single dungeon yet but would love to do so with a fun group (especially now because rewards were buffed). I don’t aim to be “pro” and basically just want to play with people who don’t take stuff too seriously, realize it’s just a game and who just want to have some FUN!! And I LOVE exploring and lending a hand to others! I’ll gladly tromp around the world with you all and do events/story quests

I’m not big on Vent – but will listen in if needed. But I can get very chatty in chat.
I’m laid back, sarcastic and can take many a joke
I’m not a big fan of close-minded homophobic people and bigoted/sexist humor.
But I love being around accepting/sweet/hilarious/helpful/goofy people

I’d also like to find something smallish. Huge guilds can get a little crazy and it can become easy to get lost in the crowd. I don’t want to be just another member. I’d rather be in something smaller where we can all get along and have a blast together.

And finally, I’d love to find a guild that is LGBTQ friendly and overall just open-minded – for myself and for others Being around progressive and open-minded people who are accepting of everyone’s gender and sexual identities makes me a happy gamer!

Dear OP. The things you do not like so much are the reasons why I’m playing this game and not WoW or the any of the other gear-train games. I like the fact that I can (and have) reach 80 and not feel obligated to raid and gear grind in order to continue to enjoy (or simply just play) the game.

I’m happy that we all have a choice now. Those who love the typical grinds and max-level gear train MMOs can play WoW, TERA, Rift etc. and people like me can play GW2

As others have said, some racials give a tiny, tiny bit better situational effect, but really our Mesmer skills ultimately win when it comes to filling my bar with consistently useful skills. Some racials are fun and showy, but nothing beats the profession-specific skills and utilities.

Honestly, in the end, just pick the race you like. The racials will never give you an advantage over another.

Yep! Rebinding is magic. It’s quite helpful indeed – and helps with all professions (one of the first things I did)

Hmm. I might have to try GS/Staff and see how that works. I like the idea of coupling Chaos Storm with my GS. I’d miss my Warden, but the Berserker is nice too.

Are you guys running mostly a domination/chaos/illusions trait build?

I’ve gone back and forth between Staff and Greatsword. Every time I play with GS, I end up missing the defensive elements of the staff – namely Chaos Storm and Phase Retreat. Also I usually play with sword/focus as my other set, and I love dropping Chaos Storm on my Warden while she’s dancing

However, I see plenty of people rave about GS. Do the players who love GS love it more for PvE or for WvW/sPvP?

Is the loss of the Staff’s defensive abilities worth the damage/might gain of the GS?

Completely disagree with the OP. I love having the option to be a trickster battle mage! I almost always play a caster in MMOS and I was sooo excited to see that I could play a profession that had a caster feel to it while still being able to utilize swords and pistols!

I <3 the Mesmer. It makes me work but I enjoy the “chess” type appeal to the profession.

I’ve recently settled on a Staff and Sword/Focus combination and I’ve paid for too many trait resets already I’m hoping I can reach out to some of you builders who’ve poured over and tested trait sets for some advice and guidance.

I’d like to create a trait set that can be both useful in WvW and in my PvE roaming (if possible). I love the focus for Temporal Curtain and the whirling Warden, and sword lets me get a good couple seconds of immobilize so I can trap mobs and players next to my Warden.

Staff has the delicious Chaos Storm which I miss dearly every time I try out a Great Sword just for kicks. GS is fun, but I miss my defensive abilities on the staff.

This is a rough set of traits based on being able to access glamour buffs, illusion buffs and staff buffs – with some illusion-on-death buffs.

I realize I’m heading down the jack-of-all-trades/master-of-none route, but something like this might give me the flexibility to switch between PvE and WvW and maybe even dungeons by giving me access to those interchangeable traits. The utilities skills shown would be more for PvE, but I’d swap in Feedback and Time Warp for more group situations.

Basically the animations were bumped up in speed so you’re not stuck in an excruciatingly long Mind Stab animation And shooting lasers from your sword is faster now too – so the GS Mesmers got some very nice fixes to their big blades.

This “Bad Link” thing has been happening for a lot of redirects to the gw2skills.net site. However, if you just copy the link and paste it into a new tab, it works just fine. Not sure why the forum redirect page is messing things up.
