That’s not a fix for gear inflation, that’s a band aid. Nearly all MMO’s with a gear based endgame do the same thing. The problem is how do you feel as a raider who spend 200 plus hours with their guild night after night grinding out the same content to get there guild geared up for the next expansion when a new player joins the game the day of said expansion comes out, solo’s his story content and then has gear on par with your raid gear.
Im fine with new expansions giving better gear, it just means i can progress my character further.
The main “problem” lies more in that your guild will stat focusing on the new raid, and the old one only becomes a “collect the set” instance, something like GW2 Dungeons.
And that some that havent completed their set from previous raid gets a hard time getting their remaining pieces.
Once you collected the set you want in GW2, every other dungeon becomes a meaningless grind and something you avoid.
anoying thing on a class like elementalist, is that, atleast the staff, ST skills are traveling in air so slow that many times enemies are in range when you cast it, but out of range when the spell lands. so you have to stand extremly close all the time to not get out of range message.
That just made no sense
Its interesting how many casual players that knows how players that likes gear treadmills think and how they live their real life lives.
Hi,
I just bought the game and downloading now. I was hoping leveling would take time and deliver lots of fun.
Is the game made to level fast (Like umm….WoW?) I hope not. :-)
Playing in a normal way, doing stuff as you go, some crafting etc, like any other big mmo, then GW2 is the fastest game to level to 80.
This also creates the problem of gear inflation, where at some point the developer needs to fast path new players or returning players into epic level gear or no new players will join the game. They also do this to maintain a critical mass of players needed to make this gear locked out content viable.
Lotro for example solves that quite nicely with new story chapters (books) in each new expansion, that gives you items that are better then the previous expansions raidgear or just as good.
Once you have finished the books, your pretty much ready to do the dungeons or raids.
GW2 story rewards are crap, but the basic “get gear while doing story” is a nice way to bridge the gap between raiders and nonraiders between expansions.
If you have a class that an pull enemies together, like warrior in your group, a staff using Ele is very good to AoE them down fast.
Problem is that enemies has a tendency to be locked on the Ele until they drop, so if the enemy has ranged, you need avoid alot with shields and doging.
Thank you, thats pretty much it.
Staff migth have AoE, but what competent PvP player is stupid enough to stand in your AoE for the full duration? Just walk out of the place where the meteors are landing = 0 damage, walk out of the big red circle appearing at your feet = 0 damage.
Thats why i added DPS in the title, not support/cc/healer. As in a wizard/sorcerer.
I didnt read anything about “Staff Elementalist is a support class with some AoE that is easily avoidable” in the class disription. Atleast there shoulda been two different staff types, one for support and one for dps.
Gunnars Hold have more guilds/alliances leading the WvW?
On FS theres no leadership, and everyone are in different guilds.
If the gear progression treadmill only affected PvE and not WvW or sPvP, would people complain as much?
If they are, its not about “skill in pvp > gear” its about them not beeing able to get everything that people that spends more time gets, which is kinda absurd.
They do, but once one person starts..theres no stoping them.
FS as a server is kinda crap now though, most of the scands have quit (most like gear treadmills)
The 2 russian guilds are barely present anymore.
The nordic assembly was alot of talk but i hardly ever saw them in WvW either.
Theres no overflow anywhere even on weekends, and its only the bandwagon scrubs left in WvW that transfered there back when we were good in WvW.
I try going to WvW now and then but its SO bad, no leadership, no defending of keeps, as soon as keep is taken everyone starts hammering on SM.
When grub spawns 99% runs for it arguing WvW is about PvE.
And everyone is to cheap to buy any sieges so when FS actually attack any keep, there no rams or anything so it takes ages to get through, often ending up with defenders showing up and FS side wiping.
And before SC’ing and TOA there were absolutely no templates etc. you tried to get the best drops you could but stats were very random and in the end everyone was very similar to each other. SC’ing the extra 3-4 dex by overcharging was not significantly better then not.
yet that is exactly what many of us maximisers are about
if theres 1 item with 10 str, 10 dex, 10 vit that is very easy to get and another item with 10 str, 10 dex and 11 vit that is MUCH harder to get and takes months to get, we choose the second, just to get the absolute max stats you can get in the game.
Ye there were no RA in RvR from the start, but they were added for a reason, and also you got +1 in each stat per RR.
Overall RvR were more fun somehow aswell, felt much more epic then in WvW.
All 3 realms with 200 players each meeting up at a milegate for a massive brawl..
Also remember once i led my server and made them hide behind the trees in Emain near the Albion milegate and when the Albs passed we all cahrged down the mountain
Sigh…those were the days..
Pretty much obvious you didnt play DaoC until later years or atleast a couple of years after release. It didnt take you days to get to 50, it took months, half a year for alot.
Until they changed the exp. (EU was released 1 year after US)
You could overcharge (cant remember the word) when you spellcrafted by adding higher number of stones then it it would normaly accept, the more you did the more chance it had to explode and you lost the item, but if you succeded, you got an item that was better then others. I remember i had a cloak overcharged, then they removed the posibility to spellcraft cloaks, so i was 1 of 3 on the whole server that had one, and it had betetr stats then normal cloaks.
I can agree stats, the grinding etc in ToA destroyed the game becouse it was then became needed in RvR.
Im not looking for that, i want equal gear in WvW aswell. To me, GW2 woulda been better of having gear treadmill for PvE, and a normalized set for WvW, just like in sPvP.
Im a maximiser, its not about pwning someone in PvP, its about progressing my character, making him stronger and stronger, its not that fun for me, when i at lvl 1 already know i wont become much stronger at lvl 80, then the game becomes completly meaningless for me.
I started playing GW2 becouse of WvW and i hoped ANet had figured out something else at endgame, alas, its just like any other game minus the gear, and people are complaining in those games theres no endgame, theres no wonder people are complaining here.
WvW doesnt have any character progression either, and my server got completly ruined by bandwagon free transfers becouse we were the best english speaking server so now WvW is dead for me aswell.
Every competent WvW player that was on the server before has left and its only the scrubs left.
My server has gone from nr 2 to nr 5 and it will probably keep on dropping.
So..unfortunally GW2 was not for me, atleast not for now.
Games like DAoC, Shadowbane, GW1, UO have all shown they don’t need a set gear based carrot to keep players playing
Sigh..people really have to stop saying that DaoC, Shadowbane and UO didnt have character progression and gear treadmill.
DaoC had ALOT of character progression, realm abilities etc, and spellcrafted gear anyone? who didnt try to get over 100% taking the risk on the item exploding, just to get a little bit more stats? It wasent a huge thing, but people still spent years to maximise their characters stats.
UO runecrafting? setbonuses?
The mmo genre doesnt reaaly work with just playing now and then though. Socializing and grouping is a big part of them. You have to rebuild all that over and over.
Elementalists are also wanted, if i’m not wrong its the best sustained dps in game.
Whats good in dungeons, pretty much sucks in normal solo PVe as an Ele
I am starting to get the feeling that this is more of a carebear version of a real MMO, suited for very casual and non competitive players.
That i knew long before release. I just hoped there would be something else at max level to keep players interested.
Unfortunally we couldnt test endgame in beta, probaby becouse they didnt want people to find out there were no alternative or new to the traditional raiding, just an empty void.
(edited by Selo.1250)
instead i get a staff shooting rainbows
(edited by Selo.1250)
That is a good thing, for WvW.
Although, without any kind of character progression, and people just mindlessly zerging around week after week to get the highest points at the end of the week.
It gets kind of boring.
WvW needs other kinds of rewards to progress your character. Such as said realm abilities and realm ranks. Also a bit more meaning to capture keeps other then getting a higher tick on the points.
@Drakortha.6974
@Dym Mahk.5768
Precisly. In old mmos it was almost required to group up to do any of the content. Usually it was easy becouse there were already players there waiting doing the same content.
For some reason the community was also better and people actually invited you, often without asking.
In most dungeon areas you could solo, but you benefited much more from grouping up, and you could go further down to farm.
Or take a game like Lotro, it had some really fun group story quests at the start, but then they dumbed it down so every stroy quest could be soloed, completly watering down the “epic feel” of it. It just became something you breezed through to complete the questline.
Nowadays every mmo is extremly casual and solofriendly. I usually tell my friends the same thing as OP, why do you play mmos if you dont want to group up? you can just aswell play Dragon Age, Skyrim or any other single player game.
Its also one of the reasons why i dont like games like DA and Sky, it feels like im running around in an empty mmo world without players to group with.
To me mmos are about socializing and grouping up to beat harder enemies.
Even if the casual playerbase is bigger (im not to sure tbh) its not that playerbase that drives the mmo genre forward, instead its that playerbase that dumbs them down.
that’s it i’ve missed it the entire time…end game….
looks all over tyria for end game, checks under rocks, in caves and up mountains but can’t find this ellusive thing known as end game….
The endgame was looking under the rocks
I dont want gear advantage in WvW
However, i wouldnt mind raiding for PvE gear aslong as it was seperate from WvW.
In WvW i would rather have character progression, like DaoCs realm abilities, ralm ranks etc.
WvW system only based on getting the most points atthe end of the week like now, gets boring fast.
Mesmers can send up their phantasms on keep walls. pain the kitten if your up there using sieges
TWMagimay.9057 says “…All fire staff skills are aoes. Every. Single. One. Of. Them…”
Selo.1250 replies: “…All staff skills are not AoE, Stoning and Water blast is ST…”
Sigh… Kids these days.
Learn to argue! How can you expect to be taken seriously if you can’t even properly argue?
(do I have to point out your mistake?)
If your rhetorical skills are any indication of your elementalist skills, then it’s no wonder you think eles are underpowered.
It’s fine to argue eles need tweaking or buffing. It’s not fine to use fallacious or otherwise nonesnsical arguments to do so. It only forfeits credibility and causes the devs to roll their eyes and avoid threads.
Learn to read the whole sentence. I said that fireball is only small radius AoE, i didnt say that fire arent AoE. I knew wordretards like you would jump directly on it, thats why i added it. You do realize only spamming fire isnt a viable way to go?
What does fireskills beeing aoe have to do with anything in the first place? Just becouse they can AoE doesnt mean their awesome.
Theres plenty of other classes that have better AoE.
Im also quite certain im older then you.
@Selo
You know… I have 80 level elementalist and know, what I’m talking about, because I spent much time in WvW.
yea..
@Novalight.7568
You are right
(edited by Selo.1250)
GW2 is like any single player game, you play through it once, then you get to the end and put it on the shelf until and expansion arive, unless something more fun has arrived by then.
Same on my server LOCO, scrubs joined (ofcourse its not their bad playing that made their server bad) to completly ruin my server instead.
Half of the time their also from a non English speaking country aswell, so it clashes with everything, and they all use up the supplies in keeps..
To late. WvW already died on servers that were on top before with organization when they got flooded and organization became impossible and the zones got filled with people that hardly know which game their playing.
Droves of WvW players on servers have quit becouse of it.
Talking WvW, the 3 way system is good. The point system is bad however, its not about skill, just about who has the biggest zerg to win by the end of the week.
DaoC RvR worked much better, consistant 3 countries fighting eachother, was about character progression, capturing relics for PvE bonuses and opening up a dungeon.
Much easier to organize alliances if one server got to strong and getting to know your enemy and who to look out for. Also beeing able to join when you wanted with no queues..
(edited by Selo.1250)
@Selo(because the forum disagrees with quoting): I’ll have to assume that what kreit said is true. Because I refuse to believe smb who plays ele wouldn’t know what skills do…or at least bother checking before posting on a forum. All fire staff skills are aoes. Every. Single. One. Of. Them.
And I see nothing wrong with being able to hold a bunch of people back by yourself. Actually, that sounds quite OP to me.
I have an ele with full dungeon exotics and weapons.
All staff skills are not AoE, Stoning and Water blast is ST.
Fireball is small radius AoE. Its also really crap to use on the move, its slow traveling speed makes it easy to avoid.
Ive done more WvW with my Ele then both of you, AND i play on a more populated server with more skilled WvW players, people that arent stupid and just stands in your aoe circles. You cant hit targets with fireball if their using stealth cover to ress. Also most of the time the distance between you and target is to far for fireball to reach.
The ones near the gates are usually high hp players, your meteor shower + lava font wont kill them, and gl getting them all of, youll get sniped by rangers long before that.
Meteor Shower is NOT gods gift to elementalists, its not an aoe pulse, it only hits where the meteors lands. Sometimes you hit many, sometimes you dont hit anything.
Hitting one person for 5k means nothing, that will be healed up quickly.
(edited by Selo.1250)
Only skill good in siege is meteor shower, a couple more skills in defence
In zerg you hold enemies back more then you damage them
Problem in WvW is that enemies never stand still, so staff isnt to good there either
This is just Staff from WVW DPS perspective
- Fireball - Useless in WvW most of the time. A VERY clear visual effect (huge fireball flying towards you) and since its so slow, enemy players just have to move slightly to the side to avoid it
- Lava Font - Decent “extra” damage, but without larger AoE trait, its not worth it, and really only usefull on keep defence
- Flame Burst - Only good if you have condition damage build
- Burning Retreat - Hardly ever use it more then as an escape
- Meteor Shower - Very situational. In open fields you wont hit much, its more used to hold of enemies then do damage. Most of the time people just run through it anyways. The damage is so spread out it wont kill anyone. In keep defence you will have a hard time getting it of, with the long activationtimer, you get sniped by rangers every time you show your face. More usefull then in open areas, but compared to barrage its not much better since barrage is an AoE pulse and meteor only hits where the meteors land.
- Water Blast - Same problem as fire basicly, only that it does MUCH less damage* Ice Spike - Does decent damage, but as the only dps skill in water you kinda feel its a waste of time switching attunement to water just to use that one skill.
- Geyser - Fine where it is
- Frozen Ground - Could have a larger AoE to be honest, most of the time people just dodge roll over it to avoid it, could also have a longer upkeep duration.
- Healing Rain - Fine, heals for quite crap on its own though, unless your healing specced, use it mostly for condition removal
- Chain Lightning - Only useable NR1 skill on the run since its homing in on targets. Problem is that it bounces everywhere and you often end up pulling every moa/ascalon soldier in the area*
Does decent damage but not nearly enough to really kill anyone. - Lightning Surge - Only time it was usefull, was when it had a bugged range
- Gust - Misses most of the time. If the enemy moves a little to the side, it wont hit.
- Windborne Speed - As our only speedboost, it should add even more speed, we dont have any other source of runningspeed in combat except this one skill, which means that we almost never can run away from fights OR chase anyone
- Static Field - Cant be placed upon an enemy to stun, enemies have to run through it, also easily dodged through
- Stoning - Extremly weak damage*
Eruption - Decent damage, better if you have condition damage build - Magnetic Aura - Could use a longer duration, blocks 2 arrows max from a fast shooting ranger
- Unsteady Ground - Ok for what it does
- Shockwave - Could be TAoE
Staff is not a dps weapon. You get 1 situational AoE (Meteor shower) that arent good for anything else then keep attack/defence and clustered enemies in dungeons.
The rest of the AoEs are condition damage based (earth) or crit based (water)
both with long activation hanging in air or building on ground for hours before it does its damage.
The rest is CC, healing, or extremly crappy ST skills that takes ages to reach it targets, and they never hit becouse if the enemy moves, it will miss the target.
Elementalist is a melee char in cloth using elemental attacks, not a “wizard/sorcerer/mage”
People can still leave the game without a monthly subscription. If it is for now and will come back later when theres more things to do, is a different question though.
But in most cases mmos only get one chance nowadays
I want sexy male armor. =[
You kinda hit a differance there when it comes to men and women. Men are not as jealous and dont care when thers male armor like this in most mmos.
http://digital-art-gallery.com/oid/36/566x976_7605_Gladiator_3d_fantasy_armor_warrior_anatomy_gladiator_picture_image_digital_art.jpg
just let people wear what they want. If players want to wear skimpy armor then let them. Most men likes breasts, deal with it.
I wish i knew before i made my character that i cant be that if i choose elementalist :/
Alot of people are leaving, but its been the same for many mmos lately and they have had one thing in common. Lack of endgame.
But yes, if you want raiding with gear progression….wrong game. They said so for years and you didn’t listen. Sorry it worked out that way, but you could’ve known this game wasn’t about gear progression before you bought it.
I read up on gw2 for years and i knew there wouldnt be any raids, but atleast many of us thought they would come up with something else. Now it just have even less to do then those “other” games.
And your probably one of those that only qeues for EB.
The “age” thing people are mentioning is not really true, im in my 30s myself and enjoy raiding and maximising my character, and ive met alot of couples above 50 that have been hardcore raiders. Ive played with people getting close to their 80s that are really good raiders.
Many old MMOs worked roughly how this works, where you could craft some of the best gear or buy it from a crafter.
those gear had stats and required pre gear, also with stats and alot of materials so it wasent like you got them for free.
someone mentioned before that they played uo without any carrot, thats just bs. UO had alot of character progression and armor with various stats, not just the same on every set, aswell as the runic crafting.
99% of the A mmos have been about treadmills, maximising and characyer progression.
“there are plenty of other games” you say? why arent you playing guild wars still then?
Coregrin.6150
Wish I had thought of this earlier in the month when my daughter approached me for Bieber tickets. I would’ve dodge rolled into traffic to avoid that concert.
Ouch, now that is something i wouldnt even wish upon my worst enemy
Dodge rolling that shouldnt cost any endurance
Ele is quite crap on gound but underwater they are soooo bad
lagrangeify.5641
You’re not happy, you’re guild weren’t happy, so you don’t see why anyone else should be? Isn’t that just an elaborate way of calling anyone who says anything positive that doesn’t accord with your view a “fanboy”?
Ironically the forum is absolutely rammed with negative topics covering a multitude of issues, both valid and downright petty (just like most MMO forums are these days), and you’re taking issue in this one.
You directly took that as me saying everyone should disslike it didnt you? Its so typical with fanboys going all defensive when someone critize “their game”
Its also strange that all fanboys only see the negative posts when i see the forum rammed with posts trying to convince the players that the game is good and “your playing it wrong”
Elementalist is really strange.
Its not a ranged class but instead the best way to PvP is by running a melee build with “elemental” weapons.
The actual ranged setup sucks in ST damage, have low survivability and only 1-2 good AoE spells, which of 1 is very situational to be usefull.
@Lalabu.2097
“Of all the MMORPGs I have ever played, Guild Wars is the first to put PvP first and PvE second.”
DaoC was before it
What made DaoC RvR superior to GW2 WvW? one of the reasons was character progression through RvR.
@coglin.1496
“What saddens me is that we have enough players with such a limited realm of knowledge that they would make such ridiculous claims as this.
At the very least, claim your some sort of psychic. Otherwise, it is just embarrassing ….Your not even capable of guessing my age, much less predicting the enjoyment I will get out of the game."
Maybe nothing to brag about, but i have with 99% certainty more mmo experiance then most on this forum, im old enough to have played games like NW and Meridian and muds before that.
The same patterns goes through all mmos and what MarzAttakz is true, ANet was brave trying something new, but unfortunally GW1 might have been a lucky spell, that concept doesnt work with most mmo players anymore.
Many players still refuse to admit that they dont really like the game and hold on for dear life forcing themselves to think its fun, but soner or later, just like any other mmo, most of them also take of their glasses and start seeing through the initial “honeymoon” period.
Everyone saying things like “before it was just about having fun” are talking out their hats. Mmos have always been about character progression, maximizing stats and becoming a “champion”, with the exception of GW1. Its a small part of the mmo community that likes that and i thing ANet shot themselves in the foot by doing it.
Will GW2 survive? yes. But for such a huge project, big world and a WvW and sPvP system that requires quite alot of players, there will probably be quite alot of server merges and a drop to SWToR/Lotro/Rift amount of players.
Question is how they will finance new content with no subsciptionfee with that amount of players. It feels like GW2 costs more to keep up.
(edited by Selo.1250)
Its funny how many of these rose tinted mantra posts are beeing made every day.
“its good becouse i say so”
It might be good for you, but people are leaving in droves becouse of lack of things to do. My guild of 75 people logging in at start have dropped to 10.
So many have their char at lvl 80 and full exotic and max stats, so they stoped playing becouse they cant progress their character anymore.
Theres no queues to WvW even on the more populated servers, and theres almost more bots then players in Orr
@Avatara.1042
in what situation? the few times you can show your face standing on walls without getting sniped by rangers and dotted by necros? then putting out a meteor shower that doesnt kill anyone.
or putting gtaoe cc that everyone runs around or ignores with cc immunity skills, then beeing completly unable to defend yourself becouse your cc is on cooldown and your sprint abilities only work in air and out of combat
They need a tredmill, a big majority wants it, and most single player games goes towards it
95% of the armors in GW2 is quite plain and boring looking.
If theres naything the Asians are good at doing, its armorlooks, Aion had awesome armorlooks.
I agree with OP on every point
Ive had people stop playing becouse they cant tank, which is their favorite way of playing. Theres no organization and many dungeons are about dying and running back..
Holy trinity is a much better mechanic.
WvW on my server has done exactly as you said, people flocked to it, and now its totally useless, from best server in EU during daytime to 6-7th.
And the PvE stuff in WVW, also true.
And i also agree with Character and Gear progression
At the start there were more alliances and guilds, but now i guess Nug and GF is the only ones left, and not even you are that strong anymore.
Once the transfer of guilds goes live, my guild would be interested of planing some move to a more WvW guild centric english speaking server
The people on Far Shiverpeaks are not the same that were there from the start.
It is now filled with players to bad to do anything on the other servers, players that dont know how to work together, dont want to work together and are only there “for the ride”
I dont think, at its current level, that Far Shiverpeaks is even 5-6 in EU
Kreit.4709
I also crit for 3k+ with my fireball. Problem is it never lands. If an enemy moves 1inch to the side, your fireball will miss the target.
Or if players are stupid enough to stand still in your lava font.
Meteor shower it not an AoE pulse, it only hits where the meteor is landing so many times you hit nothing.
Staff might have alot of AoE, but much of it are easily avoided compared to other classes AoE. Most of it also takes alot of time to show its effects > do damage, like E2,W2
Thanks ANet. You have killed the WvW experiance on our server thanks to doing nothing about nightcapping.
Everyone has stoped doing it becouse there no use, we always loose at the end anyways.
Only casual PvPers left that hardly knows which zone their in, fighting the grub.
