Eles doesnt have a ranged dps setup. Only a support setup with some AoE that are limited to 5 targets.

Eles need a pure dps ranged choice, mostly ST with some AoE

a lot of people need to feel that they are getting stronger, or at least getting “somewhere”.
my friend for exemple doesnt care about the look, he will just whatever armor piece gives the best stat, and hunt for the next armor piece that have better stats.
after getting all exotics, he quit.

imo anet need to add a grind for something.

They wont, and i think many that left knew that, they just thought ANet would have something else prepared for us, but they didnt.
No wonder they didnt let us test endgame in beta, there are none.

Kiting is the name of the game because oh god forbid I take ONE hit from a mob and shatter, oh but wait we have this invincibility button called dodge. C’mon, does it get ANY lazier than this?

“ohkitten i took agro, kite kite kite kite, dodge..ah nice someone else took agro, lets follow him and dps while he kites and dodges..i took agro again, time to kite an dodge”
“oh i died, no matter, ill just run back”

Just imagine this, you play an open world event with other players that attack the same enemy and aim for the same goal. I don’t know, sounds terribly like playing as a group.

Ah I forgot, you have to invite someone to create an imaginary bond to be allowed to play as group together…

Yuu mean the open events where noone gives a crap aboutwhat anyone else is doing and just spams dps?

You don’t even know what endgame is, endgame is what you do after you’ve levelled and geared. The problem with WoW is that most people don’t see most of the endgame and instead spend their subscription time grinding, trying to make money and levelling their gathering skills.

You don’t even play WoW and I still DO, I have spent hundreds and hundreds of hours grinding for PvP gear in the past only to see the gear gap increase still further between the new and old players. Botting has become extremely prevalent, even in PvE dungeons and the gear ladder is ridiculously tedious.

Have you ever thought that maybe doing Arah and Fractals counts as endgame content? Have you ever thought that maybe getting that different exotic skin isn’t so different to getting the new tier in WoW?

Your argument rings as hollow as your experience in WoW. If you don’t play it, don’t make claims about it.

You claim that there’s more to do, yet you don’t say kitten about what you can do.

WoW: Dungeons, raids, battlegrounds, world pvp (no-one does this anymore anyway), gathering, crafting, exploring, gear ladder, mini-games, seasonal events
GW2: Dungeons, fractals, WvW, sPvP, crafting, gathering, exploring, armour skinning, world events, dragons, mini-games

Endgame is what you do at lvl 80, beeing geared is not endgame. Raiding, PvPing is endgame. Achievements, 100% map is something you do on the side, its not endgame.

Reason why i said WoW is becouse its apperantly the one game most play, and theres many similiar to it.

Ive most likely played more mmos and raided more then you, not that its something to brag about.

There are ways to solve the skillcap between new instance tiers, lotro has done so for example.

It doesnt matter how manh instances in GW2 they add, their all meaningless, you just get a new skin, and thats it. I can see that some like it, but the big part of the mmo community dont. Getting a new tier of gear > making your stronger (character progression) > need to make stronger monsters, evolving the world. Getting a new skin in GW2 > i have 20 sets with exactly the same stats, it just makes me look uglier/prettier. No stronger monsters, stale world.

Information about this game was widely available for a long time way before release so how did you and your guild mates get into this game without knowing it had no trinity?

We knew that, but doesnt “beeing able to do all” mean that you should be able to do all? Didnt think it would be that bad without holy trinity either.

Class discriptions are really wonky aswell, elementalists doesnt have a viable ranged dps weapon for pvp for example.

I could have wrote it myself.
My Guild experianced the exact same thing, we went from 100 to now 2 players (dont think their playing anymore either)

People quickly realized theres no challange in the game and theres no rewards for doing anything, after you get your exotic set the game is dead.
After cleaing all dungeons and every path pretty much on the first try, it was quite clear this game is only made for casual players.

Another point i could add that made many of us leave was becouse of lack of class roles. Even though Anet went out with “everyone can do everything” they cant.

You cant tank, theres no tankskills, no taunts. That made a couple of my guildies quit, they wanted to tank but couldnt, and they hate the chaotic way to fight in GW2, and so do i.

Holy Trinity is so much better for big fights, raids etc. You can organize much better and its 100 times as strategic. GW2 is basicly about 3 things, run around like an idiot, dodge, and spam dps.

Actually now that prime time is in full swing, it’s obvious the game is growing. Everything is zerged and there’s overflow/queues.

Not only have there not been server merges, but server capacity has actually been increased since launch

ArenaNet is not only not firing, they are still hiring even more staff. And the only thing they’re hiring them for is GW2.

This game is already huge, and is on the way up.

Its quite known your one of the biggest fanboys on the forum and refuse to take of the blindfold.

The playerbase has dropped loads, well over 50%. Theres a huge amount of guilds that has disbanded becouse of lack of players.
My own guild went from 100 players to 2, they soon realized the flaws of the game.

The status on the server is not how many players are currently playing, i dont know how they count it, but its not, many of the so called “high” servers are abandoned.

Theres also one type of servers we dont see in the server list, the “overflow servers”
How many of those are still active? At start you could get into 5-6 different overflow servers, now you get into the same one if you get into any.

Lets say you have 100 normal servers and 300 overflow servers, how many of those 300 are beeing used now? i dont think theres to many.

Guild Wars 2 wont die, but its nowhere near increasing in population. I would say it will settle around GW1 population. And the fanboys will get a shock when they start merging their first servers.

why do people knock wow when gw2 end game is identical with people in one main city spamming lfg?

I dont play WoW but its easy to understand why its more popular. It has more sttuff to do and dont count exploring 100% of the map, picking flowers and playing dress up doll as endgame. Plus that what you do is actually rewarding.

GW2 wont die, but it dropped a major chunk becouse of lack of content and character/gear progression. Then another big chunk of the casual players still playing when they added fractals.

GW2 will have a playerbase around GW1 size, differance is a mammoth like GW2 requires alot more resources to keep up then GW1

You hit a nail on another point why many people left GW2, and something i hear ALOT of my mmo friends talk about.

Todays mmos are to solobased, theres no grouping for anything making mmos basicly a sologame where you can see other people.

This a serious concern for me and many of my friends in future mmo, where “solo and casual” seems to be the mantra.

In the olden days, you had to group to get further down in some public dungeon, get to know new people, socialize and make new friends.

That built a much better community on your server, and if your game had a pvp function, you could later meet that guy you grouped up with in that dungeon in the PvP area and know work much better together.

Socialising is something that has been lost in recent mmos, the only ones you talk to are the ones in your guild, and barely that.

Agree with article

Combat system is good on paper but flawed ingame. You just start the fight with your dodge button ready and everyone runs in and starts spamming dps.
Theres no strategy involved, when you take agro, you start running like an idiot until someone else takes agro, then he starts running like an idiot until someone else takes agro and so on. If you die, you jsut run back…
Holy trinity makes for much more tactical fighting. Saying that theres no movement in holy trinity is just bullcrap, having a dodgebutton doesnt make it “better”

Atleast the instances are easy enough that my group of friends cleared every path in every dungeon. The dungeons are not hard, its just that the combatsystem is incredibly stupid.

Classes are really unbalanced and doesnt give a clear discription on what they can do.
Elementalist for example, many think it would be a mage class with max range damage like normal mages, but infact it has worthless range damage and you have to be in melee if you want to do dps. Not every class can do everything..well maybe warrior.

The story is really weak, liek many said its not your story, your could just as well just have read some text, you make no differance whatsoever

Im a crafter, i craft in every mmo, but this one was one of the worst.
Take cooking for an example, you spend heaps and heaps of mats leveling up and finding recipes, but at the end its all junk, noone buys it and when you get to max, people just buy 1 item, and barely that, the rest is useless.

Heartquests is just normal quests without a questgiver, theres no differance.

In all mmos ive played since Meridian, GW2 is probably the most boring one and way to casual mainstream.
It should be a lesson for future developers of mmos, making an mmo only catered to casuals wont work, they might be a large community, but their not the ones carrying a mmo.

There will be server mergers sooner or later. The playerbase has dropped by around 75%

Tell that to my WvW queues, multiple Lion’s Arch overflows (overflows from the overflow), and lag at meta events due to so many people.

The game is booming.

When people purchase GW2 they effectively purchased a free lifetime subscription. You don’t have to log on everyday to be an active player or stay current in this game, it’s one of the very good things about GW2.

The game is not booming, stop trying to convince yourself it is.

Maybe your on one of the servers that everyone has flooded to becouse of lack of players in WvW on other servers, on most servers, theres no queues at all in WvW, or considerably lower then it was before (my server had 8 hours queue, now theres no queues at all)
And Lions Arch have queues becouse thats where you can find the only end game grinding for gear.

Grats. I realized this months ago. Theres no ranged dps spec for eles in pvp.

Spamming AoE that anyone with half a brain can avoid doesnt make it good.

And tbh, the damage of the aoe in staff is not that good, its not as bursty as D/D and Meteor shower only hits 5 targets.

Make all skills in staff activate and travel twice as fast, then we can talk.
Add some more homing of the nr1 skills while your at it, air is the only nr1 skill that works in pvp, the rest misses 90% of the time.

I also watched that video, and lets just say, once you got there, it was nothing like they said and a huge dissapointment.
The story was one of the weakest in an mmo so far, and while mmos are so dumbed down and levels waaaay to fast, gw2 breaks all records in dumbing down the leveling progress makin you able to get to maxlvl in a couple of days.

The “the whole game is endgame” is just a stupid argument.

The game had a huge end game, it just was optional and not needed. My main had his Arah Set next I wanted to get the cultural armor for my first twink and I was think about the Ascalon Set for my second. I did a lot of WvW and played dungeons for fun too. That’s exactly the kind of end game I expected since I’m from GW1.

Some players had left before, that’s true, but what did you expect? Blizzard made Pandas available and so the gear locust left.

Your one of the casuals that didnt leave before patch

For me the combat is just too boring. I tried to ignore it in beta.. “haha well it must be my fault as a player, I’m sure it’ll grow on me, there’s hidden depth I’m just not seeing..”

I just can’t take it. 10 active skills at once is simply. not. enough.

No one else seems to mind though so maybe I’m just wrong ._.

I felt exactly that during beta aswell
“it will get better once i play with my friends/get to higher lvl/get more skills/learn my class” The game is WAY to much focused around some stupid dodge..and running around like an idiot.

I also felt that about the content “It will probably get better once we get to endgame, ANEt probably thought of something fun to do once we get there that arent raiding”
Yet..theres nothing

Not having holy trinity was good on paper but doesnt work in the game, there no teamplay, its more about doing as much dps as possible while avoiding getting hit, to an extent where everyone in the group is running their own race and dont help eachother.

People started leaving well before the release of Fractals. Some for lack of progression/grind, some for lack of no-grind content, some because of the many bots and bugged events.

exactly + many other things

8) Fill all crafting slots with 250 items lol..yea..nice endgame
9) Get all mini pets Thing you should do on the side, shouldnt be the main game
10) Have fun! almost none of the above is fun, fun is subjective gear grinding to most is fun picking flowers, watching clouds and playing dress up doll is not fun for most

The Lost Shore patch divided the community and a lot of players are pissed cause Arena Net broke a very important promise. In addition, you now have to spend a lot of your time sitting in Lion’s Arch and spamming “lfg/lfm” if you want to do the new dungeon, which is the only way to get the best in slot gear. You can’t level your twinks if you are wasting your time spamming stupid text messages.

The lost shore patch wasent what divided the community. The game was already sinking long before that with no endgame.

50%+ had already left before the patch, and the ones complaining about it, are the casuals that still play the game.

Oh, and 1 dungeon with slightly better gear doesnt turn the game into a gear grind. Its still very linear and casual.

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Selo.1250

Back in the early days of MMOs, grouping was very social. There was all this downtime and lots of chatting and getting to know people.

In the old mmos pre wow, the community consisted of much more mature players around their 30s.

You grouped up MUCH more, basicly becouse you had to. YOu didnt have to ask, if you entered an area, people were kind enough to invite you if they had a spot, just to help eachother out.
Sure you had the kittens, but those quickly became known throughout the server and became “outcasts”
You made much more friends that werent even in your guild in those times and it created a much better feeling and that was one of the reasons “realm pride” was created in DaoC, everyone helped eachother out.

Now..everything has became so trivialized, everythiing is so easy you basicly can play with one hand, and you dont have to group for anything, even the dungeons in many mmos are now 2-3 man.

Thats one of the reasons why mmos have failed so much lately, they have forgotten the multiplayer part of mmos and the social part of it.

Lost motivation to play...

The once that whine now, are the casuals that are still left.
The hardcore players have already left. And fractals and 1 easy to get set is not nearly enough to bring them back.
The game has many flaws that s made loads of players already leave, such as combat system, holy trinity etc.

I think of skillbased playing more a pvp thing, and there it should be equal in gear, like in daoc. but you need other ways to character progress. daoc wouldnt have lived as long as it did without character progress.

In Raids, skillsbased playing is still a huge factor. How many times havent raids wiped becouse of some players lacking in skills, concentration etc, maybe that is one part casual players dread.
I want skillbased playing + gear progression + character progression. You dont need to excluse one of them for a mmo to work. As others have posted before, even if you get stronger, enemies also get stronger.
Only having skillbased playing however gets very boring quickly for most players, players needs goals and rewards to keep on playing.
Maybe not all, but a huge majority.
ANet was brave to try it out, but unfortunally they tried it out in such a huge game like GW2, and in the end, it will hurt them.

“Im so angry i wont get the best items in the game for free, even though i dont need them for the content im doing as a casual player”

Hardcore Gamer:* Primary consideration is “winning”, “beating the game”, “completing the game”, “being the best or among the best in the game”.

Casual Gamer: Primary consideration in an MMOG is “having fun”, “entertainment”, “relaxation”, “enjoyment”.

Only for the majority of mmo players, “winning”, “beating the game”, “completing the game”, “being the best or among the best in the game”. = “having fun”, “entertainment”, “relaxation”, “enjoyment”

And playing “dress up doll” = “boring”

What is a Gear Treadmill?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Selo.1250

Selo.1250

So gear progression or not isnt the idea of an MMO longevity? Ive been playing MMOs for almost 10 years, and this is the first time ive actually “beat the game” in less then 2 months… and the argument that this is supposed to be a PVP game to get keep you playing is false. The PVP is fundamentally broken and full of bugs, and the one dimensional zerg encouraging game type is a far cry from an e-sport.

So I think people should stop complaining about this “gear treadmill” and how its gonna break the game, and focus more on will this new content really keep you hooked until the next patch? I personally think Anet needs to go back to the drawing board and fix alot more of the core of the game.

Anyway rant aside, a “gear treadmill” in an MMO is inevitable as its what these games are built around. I didnt expect Anet to start implementing it so soon, and hopefully in the future they can find other ways to keep players hooked. And yes it may only be 2 rings and a backpack, but it shows the direction they are heading.

GW2 will never be about gear treadmill and thats why it wont have a large playerbase. It will drop to Guild Wars level or less.

Gear Treadmill is an essential part of mmos to keep it living, and dont say GW1, it had more character progression and it wasent THAT huge.
The biggest peaks in playerbase they had was when they added stuff that made your character stronger.
Without Gear Treadmill and Character Progression, an mmo will diminish rapidly.

100% map and jumping puzzles should be something you do between gearing up, not the main part of the game.

A gear treadmill goes in hand with power creep. You get a +5 power boost and mobs get a +5 defense boost. Your progression is all an illusion. You are no more powerful than what you were before the new gear.

Your missing the whole point with gear treadmill. Its not about owning some monster more, its about seeing higher numbers on your character, more then the other person next to you, or atleast the first one to get there.
And when you whack that monster, you see a higher number, yes the monster has more health, but you have become stronger.

A Casual player wants acces to everything a player that puts alot of thought, strategy and effort with their friends into getting their items, for free.
A casual player dont do any raids or harder content, so they dont need the items from there, yet they want acces to it, for free without any effort, even though they dont need it.

Reality is the majority of MMO players want a gear treadmill.

So explain to us why all WoW clones have failed, with the latest being The Old Republic. It’s easy to say “the majority of MMO players want feature X, which is just like WoW”, ignoring how WoW clones are dying all around.

Rift is doing just fine….

You mean the game that just (abruptly) shutdown half of it’s remaining servers due to “awesome new server tech” and has to constantly give people reasons (look at all this cool stuff we will give you!!) to prepay months (if not years) worth of subscriptions to meet revenue goals? yeah, doing fine indeed.

There are major companies looking at what Trion has done for their servers and they want to do the same to theirs.

Here is CNN for example.
http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/04/10/cnn-looks-at-rifts-server-technology/

But I am sure you will still see this as “Rift Fails Hard”.

That article was from 4/10/11 – if you have played Rift for any amount of time on one of the more populous servers (say, Faeblight) you would know what a horrible, laggy mess it is when a zone wide event takes place. In fact, because of how they have their servers coded, an event taking place on the live server affects RAID instances – oh how fun HK was with lag from Ember Isles events…total failure. 3s+ lag between key presses being recognized by the server makes for a fun game…

Just like gw2, rift suffered from lack of things to do at endgame. In rifts case, you could basicly only raid or do scenario pvp. Noone wants to do that ALL the time.
In gw2 you can grind events, or do meaningless wvw.
Rift kept their playerbase better the first months, and i think it will go up a bit again with the expansion. Many of my guildies is gonna try it out.

The players that would want it in gw2 are bigger then the ones that dont. Yet, i know it wont happen, even though i find no character progression and gear treadmill beeing boring, ateast gw2 did something for me making me realize that.
To bad theres no new mmo with great 3 side pvp, tab targeting, holy trinity and gear treadmill :/

Only endgame in gw2 is grind, more repetative grind then in most mmos, short grindy dungeons, massive grind for karma etc. Just that the grind leads to nothing.

jumping puzzles, map completion etc should be side things to do, not the main game.

Ohyea, i can buy armorset that looks worse then what i already have and with worse stats.

Your basicly only farming to see how big the number in your gold window can go.

Pve is meaningless, WvW is meaningless, sPvP is meaningless.
This is not an FPS, its an MMO, never compare the 2.

please don’t post xfire numbers. even though i think it’s obvious population has diminished greatly, xfire is best left to be joke cliches of mmorpg.com and kotaku( i mean that those two sites are a joke because of things like citing xfire numbers, among many, many other things)

Thats exactly what the SWToR fanboys said.
I dont use xfire myself, but its a good indication

Ele before the nerf?

Staff Ele was decent before nerf.
It got nerfed becouse alot of players used Meteor shower at the same time “beeing op”
Now its just meh, and misses most of the time, the rest of the staff skills are easily avoidable in WvW.

I like looking on my female character, she has a nicer body.
Although my main is an Asura i made female human alts.
It also makes it more fun making her look as good as possible whereas on a male character i dont really care how he looks.

Out of 10, what would you rate this year's GW2 Halloween Event?

2/10. Seen much better events in other mmos.

Basicly just a ploy to make people spend alot of cash on buying Keys for chests.

Rewards VERY bad. 10 slot bag?…

Havent logged in myself for 2-3 weeks, i saw this comming a looong time ago.
Scrubs from the loosing servers moving to FS to get some “glory” clogging up queues making the organized guilds unable to organize and eventually leave, and every potential wvw player leaving becouse the scrubs that are left in wvw now are just awful pvp players.

FS had problems with organization from start but Anet killed FS with free transfers.

Bored using the same 5 skills over and over ...

I prefer something in between GW2 and “other games”

I like having multiple hotbars that i can set out my skills on my own and arent looked like GW2. I like beeing able to set out food/pots/scrolls etc on them aswell.

However i dont like needing to press 40 different skills per fight.
Ele is bad enough.

The attunement/weapon changing im not a fan of though, weapon changing is better then attunement since with weapons you only need to change then go with that for the whole fight.

Looking for a nice looking staff skin

The staff looks are very lacking, the legendary is awful.
Theres basicly only 2 decent looking ones. The Ascalonian catacombs one becouse it glows in the dark, and the pact one.

7 days Server Transfer

Anet was to late with the change, the damage is already done.
To many servershave been destroyed with server transfers, its not even a fraction of the players doing WvW anymore, many of the organized WvW guilds have quit.

Many servers got filled with scrubs that made it impossible to have any kind of organization on the server, and now, their the only ones left.

Quality overall in WvW players dropped from maybe 6/10 to 2/10 on my server with free transfers

Able to make staff more of a wizard and less of a buffer.

Higher ST and AoE damage for less healing and combo fields.

The ST has to be faster in animation, both casting speed and traveling from player to enemy.
The ST skills should also be 1400m range.

The CC actually have to be more effective and last longer. About ever class removes it way to easy, or just dodgeroll out of it/through it
