“Now I am become Death, the destroyer of worlds.”
This is a pretty impressive WvW video on how to run a power reaper:
Hello everyone!
So back when checking out GW2 for the first time, I used to toy around with this hybrid/celestial P/D thief in WvW and even PvP. It was such a strange build that I think people just didn’t know what to expect and so it would end up having some great duels. The idea was to focus on conditions while still having enough power/crit to make people a bit concerned. It was my favorite class/build combo in the game but I don’t see anything about it anymore. The most current version of the build I can make is linked below. Can you all take a look at this and tell me if this would work under the current system or not?
Thanks!
Lol sure thing.
My favorite sig quote is from Chris Rock “A man is only as faithful as his options.”
Lame… looks like I can’t quote you for a signature. Oh well…
I just bought the game on Friday so I don’t have really anything to offer anyone yet but I’ll keep reading this if I happen to come across something that one you is looking for. I know lots of folks like those pets/miniatures (which I hate) so I’ll toss all of those up that I find.
For me, if you all find “strange” dyes that you don’t want any will likely sell them to a vendor, I’d love to have them.
Oh, and is there an easier way to find this Super Longbow in the attachment than through chests? I have the worst luck in finding keys.
@ Link:
Thanks for the reply! I used my “boost” option to level a Necro but it looks like that tonight, I’ll be starting over on my Ranger. At least leveling in GW2 is easy and pretty fun as it will help with getting the Druid tree unlocked faster as well as the painful grind to 500 in crafting.
My apologize. Sitting in jury room waiting to be called. Will give a ‘review’ later.
Why post now? ..cause I’m bored as hell and read all the news on MSN and trying to look busy so this weird guy next to me will stop talking.
This is the best response I have ever seen on any forum! I laughed so hard when I read this that my sides now ache. Can I quote you for my signature block? LOL!
Hello again folks!
Sorry to come back to this thread again but I think I’m pretty close in figuring out what I want to play and focus 100% of my time on. After checking out several guides, I’m down to either the Necro (probably a GS/Reaper) or the Ranger (LB Druid). Both of these classes look extremely fun to play, can use almost the same gear/build setup for WvW, PvP, and general PvE, and don’t appear to be the “meta.” Yeah… I like changing things up a bit where viable. Below is pretty much everything I’ve come up with and was wondering if again, you all would give me your thoughts on these to help me make the final choice.
The Necro:
Personal Pros – Lots of build diversity, completely unexpected build, can have fun trolling in EotM with fear bombs and cliffs! LOL….
Personal Cons – Mobility sucks, really need a condi set for raiding, too easy to get kited by someone with a brain.
GS Necro/Reaper – Burst Build Video Guide Below, The Build: Burst Necro Build Link
The Ranger:
Personal Pros – One build to rule them all (kudos if you get the reference), +33% movement speed, crazy amounts of mobility/cc, insane single-target burst damage (saw a guy do over 38K in EotM), can play as a healer with the right gear.
Personal Cons – Kinda squisy, easy targets for a thief, can get repetitive due to lack of build diversity.
LB Ranger/Druid – The Sniper Build Guide Below, The Build: Sniper Ranger Build Link
Solo roam is hard in WvW. Current equivalence to old DD ele is druid.
I’m not sure I follow you with the comparison. Are you talking about how effective they are or overall play style?
Just watched this video and was simply amazed! I just bought the game two days ago and boost-leveled a Necro but now I’m reconsidering that choice. The Ranger was a close second for me but I was afraid I would get bored with the LB/GS. This looks like it’s so much more engaging to play.
As a new player who can’t get ascended gear for quite some time, is there a different armor set you would suggest that I can use to get similar results?
Thanks!
Folks,
First, I wanted to thank you all, especially Danikat for the great advice and wisdom that I really needed to hear. Last time I really focused on a MMO I was so obsessed with the FotM that I never really committed to anything and just burned myself out. Reading the subforums for each class started to make me feel the same way again.
I think the point that Vukorep makes about people not complaining in the normal aspects of the game is something really to think about. While exploring the new expansion area, I’ve found my Necro to be really simple, easy and fun to play. I’ve solo’d some pretty difficult boss mobs without really having to worry so much. Of course, when playing that Ranger, they were dead in a matter of seconds but if I made a mistake, I was dead too. lol… it was fun either way.
Again, thanks for all the help! This is such a great community.
Solo roam is hard in WvW.
You need to have confidence to take on 1v2 against average players and the ability to escape larger groups.
It is much easier for you to play with a group first either roaming or zerging.
I used to be able to 2v1 back on my old D/D Ele after beta was released but on my Necro, it’s so much trickier.
Your best bet is to level a character naturally. The L80 Boost is the bane of new players. You miss the entire tutorial, and flounder.
If not willing to do that, I would concentrate on World Map Completion (lower level maps to highest level maps in order), and the Personal Story (as suggested above) first.
Welcome to Tyria, and good luck.
This is some good advice. Thanks!!!
So, I’m about two days into the game now and I thought I had a nice warm fuzzy about my shiny new Necro that I chose to boost until I made the mistake or reading through most of the top threads on each class. Now, I’m not so sure what to think or believe but to be honest, I’m seriously worried if I might have made a mistake.
After reading today’s threads, I would think that the Necro is all about worthless in WvW, well sub-par in PvP, and only slightly tolerated in end-game PvE. The (power) Ranger, a class/build I played around with a good bit and almost selected before the Necro, is decent in WvW if people carry you, has no place in PvP, and auto-removed from all PvE groups. Oh, and that crazy-fun D/D Ele I played back after beta is about as threatening as a sleeping two-year-old.
So, as you can tell, I’m really confused if I should continue working on my Necro, put some work into the Ranger alt I made, or just say screw-it and roll the meta Warrior/Guard. I love this game but I want to focus on mainly one class and be be best I can be.
I’m afraid of spending my time working one main character only to find out it’s not really that viable or needed.
And advice please? Sorry for the wall of text…

Okies… I suppose that the next time my blob rolls some poor guy trying to solo a camp, I won’t feel so bad. Lol!
I must be missing something as I play a power-minion master using dagger/warhorn with a staff and thus far, it’s working very well. I even got mocked for playing a carried build. The constant swiftness combined with all the blinds, fears, and hard CC have just destroyed people. Perhaps I just get lucky.
Just by spending your proof of heroics on:
https://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Notarized_Scroll_of_Heroics
I understand that part but how are you getting those proofs so quickly? Running EotM?
Ok, I’ll bite… how do you max out hero points so fast in WvW? Sorry… pretty new to the game.
So I bought the game yesterday and joined the Tarnished Coast as I’ve heard it’s the hub for all RP in NA. As a RP fan and someone who also loves large-scale PvP, I figured this was a good option as I’ve also heard that TC had a well organized WvW group of players.
Since logging into the scene, it appeared as if the server was in a 2v1 battle against the other two (Blackgate and something else… can’t remember). Also, on just about every map I explored, there were these random 5-10 man zergs running around crushing any 1-2 man team. Is this typical of what I should expect? If I really enjoy the concept of WvW, was it a mistake to join a T1 server?
Thanks for the responses!

GW2 is so much more different than any other MMO I’ve played (which is great!) but now that I’m 80, I’m not sure where to go at this point. I bought the game yesterday and use that boost option so I have all about 5% map completion. I’ve spent hours upon hours reading about the game so I’m well aware of most aspects but with trying to get my new mastery tree completed, crafting for ascended gear, feeding the PvP addiction, and just exploring, I’m not sure where to start first. There is just so much to do that it sort of feels overwhelming.
Anyways, I’m sticking to my original character (necro) and while I like PvE, I’m a bit afraid of jumping into fractals right now until I get a better grip on my class/build. Overall, I really just want to progress towards finding/crafting better gear, earning some gold so I can buy dye colors, etc.
Can you all please give me some suggestions on a direction I should take? Right now I feel like I have a massive ADD problem where every time I turn around its like, “LOOK, SOMETHING SHINY! WAIT, THERE IS SOMETHING SHINY OVER THERE!!! AAAGGGGH… MORE SHINY EVERYWHERE!”
Ok, that last part with a bit over the top but you get the point…
-Sidil
You’ll need to grind out those mastery points again though but yeah, it’s pretty darn nice. This is why I’m afraid of being an alt fanatic.
As someone who just bought the game yesterday after doing a TON of research on every aspect of GW2, I can say that while there are some things that I don’t like about the game, the majority of things were done very well. If you look at the rise and fall of so many MMOs these last few years, GW2 always appears to be on the top each year.
Well, I’ve been playing the Necro for the last few hours and freaking love it! After reading over all the build options, it’s kinda exciting to blend in raw power with those conditions. Guess this is where I’ll be staying.
Hello everyone!
I played GW2 back right after it was released but just didn’t stick with it. After searching around for a game that is more “casual friendly,” I’m come to understand just how much GW2 really has to offer and how much Anet got right when creating this MMO. So many things that other games may force you pay for are just part of the deal here. Kinda impressive.
Anyways, I’ve been testing out a Necro (power/minion) build in PvP and something similar for the level 80 trial and it’s been a ton of fun so far! As I tend to solo most of the time, I’m concerned as how viable this class will be in WvW and holding my own in PvE as well.
For someone who is most a solo player, tends to focus more on PvP(ish) sides of MMOs, would the Necro be a good option to stick with? I had also considered a power Ranger but I they look somewhat limited in the play style.
Anyways, thanks for the help!
