Dispite it’s flaws, my little hybrid Ranger is my favorite class in the game. I actually do better on her than any other of my characters. Sometimes it’s not the class, just the player behind the class that matters. For me, it just “feels” right and so that’s why I stick with it.

It’s funny because back then I was playing WoW and after taking a look at GW2, I thought to myself, “this game is kind of lame. I’ll definitely never play this thing…”

Ya know, I may get some salt for agreeing with you but you’re right on the money here. The only time I even use Marksmanship is when doing PvE group events or running a larger group in WvW. Otherwise, the whole skill tree is useless for how I play my LB build. Having pierce should be baseline for the weapon itself.

Honestly, I can’t agree with the OP either. I’ve some of the bosses to be challenging but none of them were all that complicated to defeat. I also play a druid so I’ve got a massive amount of regen should I need it.

I roam around with a hybrid Druid focusing on survival and regeneration through adding points into + healing. Combined with traveler’s runes, stealth, and over 2.8K armor, she’s a pretty tough cookie to take down. I also still run LB/GS for my weapons and then use pets that either give me more CC or make stealth easier. My usual play is if I can’t kill the target or his/her buddies show up, I can always stealth and get away.
For groups, you can always pull points from armor and shove them into the healing side in order to keep your group up and alive.
This build concept works very well in PvP as well where I end up taking the mendor’s trinket for that massive + healing.
I’ve been running this build for a while now and really love it when someone sends me a message saying how OP I am or how Rangers are just cancer. LOL! Really, a Ranger being OP?

Personally, I’ll never buy an outfit as I feel it takes away the unique aspect of my character. I hate running around and seeing another character look exactly like mine so hence why I have never liked the outfit concept. GW2 has such a vast array of variety in how you can create your character with all the pieces of armor, why would I want to just have a “cookie-cutter” look like someone else?

I use a power druid hybrid for my primary build in all aspects of the game. I’ve found it to be extremely effective, fun, and provides a great deal of survival as well.
Take a look at the video below from Princess Cay. She’s pretty much been my inspiration in building my power druid.
So I rarely post up build theory crafting (because my ideas are really strange) but this is a concept I’m playing around with and was wondering what you all thought. Please note that this is really only for WvW though I suppose it would make PvE questing pretty easy as well.
Anywho… I’m trying to work a hybrid build around trapper runes that also produces enough raw power to make people fairly concerned. Essentially, a scrapper build that should I get into a bad situation, it’s pretty darn easy to simply escape (can you tell I used to play a thief ). With that being said, I wanted something that provides decent mobility, sustainability (regen), and then a combination of direct damage and conditions. My theory is that with the stealth that comes from the traps combined with the CC of the pet+traps, I should be able to lock a target down and kill them rather quickly.
As for the weapons, I LOVE the LB so I simply won’t ever give that up and instead of my normal GS, I changed over to the S/T for mobility and added condi damage.
As someone who used to play the GS + S/T PU hybrid, do you all think the new elite spec will be beneficial to this weapon setup? I never liked a condi mesmer and always preferred the power/stealth build I was running.

Honestly, I don’t see that I’ll ever even use the new elite spec. I play a hybrid power LB/GS build using the druid skills to gain quick self-healing followed by stealth as an escape. My build and play style are centered around small groups in WvW or 1v1. It’s fun, produces a ton of damage, and has enough regen/survival that if I can’t win the fight in the first few seconds, I can easily stealth and heal back for another round.
From what I’ve seen of the soulbeast, I can’t see anything in that spec adding to what I already have working. In fact, I think the soulbeast would be a a significant disadvantage against my current setup.

I used to love my ele back in the day until I saw the light of a Druid. With boon strip on my LB + poison + massive CC combos… Yeah, an ele just isn’t what they used to be. Now, if there is an ele in a group then that’s a different story all together.

… Even its very community, it mutates. Everyone who sticks with the game, despite it’s alien feel, is changed. Where former MMOs fostered a community of distrust and competition, GW2 encourages its players to work together and changes them in the process. In almost every way, GW2 takes the standard, the tried and true, and mutates and turns it into it’s own thing. And it makes it incredibly attractive while doing so. And that is the core, the heart, of GW2 and even most of GW.
Very well said my good sir. This is exactly how I feel in GW2 which is completely unlike any other MMO. Here, people are so much more willing to provide help and assistance. When playing this game, it never feels like a chore or I’m “forced” to do something just to keep up with everyone else.

This is the reason that I originally bought the game. I figured that any company that would such effort into an amazing song like “Fear Not This Night” must have something truly impressive.
… but i fear it won’t work once you get to some higher Elo in PvP, cause it’s neither fast enough to go and decap nor is it made to fight on point as alot of it’s potential comes from positioning with lb.
Yup, I’ve noticed that as well. For those larger area caps, it’s not much of a problem as you can still get enough CC + stealth to distract players long enough for the team to secure the point but otherwise, it’s not as effective. I do have an alternate condi/trapper/hybrid I use for PvP as it’s much better suited for point holding. Outside of PvP, that build is boring and just not much fun to play. As I’m not as crazy into PvP as I once was (focusing on getting a legendary now), it’s still nice to play something not really expected by the other players. That, and not having to change out gear for other aspects of the game is just a huge bonus.
One thing in WvW that it reminded me of was back in the days when I played a P/D hybrid thief and would hide in the shadows to regen and then reset the fight. Playing a bit more cautious than I probably should, I found myself doing that a few times last night in order to get others to change targets and/or forget about me. When the did, they died rather quickly.
Oh, and I don’t know what you think about the blue dragon pet you can get with HoT but I use him as my primary pet now. His damage + massive CC just comes in handy when I want to make sure my burst lands.

Well, thanks to you I’ve gone ahead and changed over to the dark side. I dumped some coin into rebuilding my stats for my Ranger and while she doesn’t have full ascended trinkets yet, it’s pretty amazing so far! I’m using the same build now for WvW, PvE, and a variant in PvP. In each game mode, the build excels and I have to admit, it’s really funny to watch how people will completely give up on you once you start using the stealth to your advantage.
As for PvP, it’s quite nice getting top damage as a Ranger while still pushing out some impressive healing. It’s even better in small WvW roaming groups were you can sit back and nuke people and then quickly heal up your team.

I personally love how the class/build plays and as much as I’d like to try and convince myself that I can make it work, the sad truth is that when I change over to my hybrid Ranger or Warrior, I can so much more with such little effort. Additionally, I find that with the Ranger or the Warrior, I don’t have to change much around with gear or builds to be very effective in every aspect of the game. This isn’t so much the case with my D/D Ele.
Honestly, I feel bad when I run into another D/D Ele while out roaming on my Ranger. The ability to CC + burst DPS just makes me feel sorry for the guy. Of course, once you play a D/D Ele, it’s pretty darn easy to know how to counter them.

Will you be making some more vids? I’ve love to see you doing some more roaming. I’ll admit though that the one ranger/thief fight you had made me cringe a bit. As someone who plays a Ranger, I tend to find an ele pretty darn easy to CC + nuke.
I’m an OG ele (playing D/D since game start basically) so I have some old videos that still stand. But the answer is yes! I recorded some videos today and I hope to put another out very soon.
Also yes, the ranger was clearly bad but he and the thief should theoretically be able to beat me, right?! Lol. That’s how I look at roaming nowadays. If two people beat me with all those stacks and foods and everything people are buying, that’s fine. I can’t help it. But if I can beat two or more people, that’s just fun!

Both of my characters run a hybrid build so while everyone knows what the weapons do, they are never expecting the massive sustain I focus on.
That reminds me…. in the old days I run my Ele with a build that give a +movement bonus. I’ve also seen folks using traveler’s runes. What do you suggest for WvW roaming?

I’d totally support an in-game marriage system of some sort though I don’t think it should be much more than a title or perhaps, some couple specific animations (cuddle or something like that).
Still, I wouldn’t expect to participate in this option as there isn’t anyone worth of my awesomeness.

This was always my favorite class/build as it was just so much fun to play. Sadly, I just felt like I was doing 10x more skills to get the same damage as everyone else and at the same time, there was little room for errors.

I have a hybrid survival/zerker build that I use with the LB and will change around the staff or GS depending on the situation. I can post a link here later today if you’re interested but basically I use a good bit of healing gear + food and try to balance the rest of the status similar to a bunker build. My overall power is less than the traditional zerker but the survival is far greater.

Vaanss, when I watch your vids, it reminds me of the South Park Episode were the one guy was wiping out entire towns of people. At this point, I would think that folks would see you and just run the other way.

I mentioned this in another thread but as a Ranger, a DH is pretty easy to deal with especially if they are just going to sit on a point and spam their traps. At 1500 range, they die quickly.

I play a “hybrid-ish” Ranger in PvP and personally, I love running into a Guard who’s trying to hold a point. It’s easy because most of them are so predictable where I can send in my pet to activate the traps, swap pets, and then burn him down before he can even respond.
On a side note, it’s pretty funny to end the game as a Ranger and get top damage and healing. Rangers are so much fun…

I love the human female PC voice. She nails sounding like a strong, calm authority that too often in voice acting comes across as whiny or screechy.
My thoughts exactly! I think the only other female PC voice that comes close is the actress who voices Hawke in DA:2. The human PC voice acting is the main reason why I rolled a human instead of any other race.

I just went and tried out my warrior after the changes and in PvP, she’s completely worthless now. That timed delay is so easy to avoid that it’s just pointless.
I’m so frustrated that my favorite character is so broken.

For me, the Ranger was probably the easiest class to level even when running HoT content and beyond. I always kept a bear as a pet and then one I used for high DPS. It was funny using the bear to take down world elite mobs while you sit back and burn them down with a LB.
These days, I still run my Ranger all the time for WvW, PvP and PvE. I play a bit differently (using zealot hybrid build) but overall, it’s a great class.

The only real “critique” i could bring on is, that with the 15 sec CD of CA in WvW Dolyak rune OR Mango Pie is enough to use it on CD, so you should consider dropping one of the two for either a better defensive or offensive rune/food.
Would you think that the Melandru runes would work then? I’m trying to keep my armor rating above that magical 2800 mark.
