I would actually quite like to see the Commando become a thing—that is to say, as a future Elite Specialization.
A Rifle for the Thief that functions as a ranged burst damage weapon and skills that focus on debilitation and so forth.
And an Elite that actually calls in a Pact-style chopper to drop explosives.
We have all the elements to make a Commando that fits in Tyria, to be honest. I would be glad to see it.
Please rename it to “Five Finger Heart Exploding Technique”.
You’re using a staff not your fingers.
Also, allow it to crit.
If you poke the eye, yeah sure, but you’re poking the chest and some professions have heavy armor. Even a half naked Elementalist is covered in dirt armor.
Perhaps you are right.
Maces, Hammers, and the Revenent Staff should not be able to critically hit at all.
There is no way that is imbalancing or foolish.
Particularly since blunt weapons are significantly better against heavy armor than bladed weapons, not worse.
You’re using a staff not your fingers.
Was it not a trait?
It is an effect on Interrupts.
It could combine with any number of weapons.
I, myself, look forward to using it with Headshot on the poor and unsuspecting.
Minor Adept – Serpent’s touch – Stealing causes vulnerability.
This is not ideal, as it does not reduce target healing.
Poison on Steal is useful for many builds for that alone, since many builds do not actually have the Poison condition. My build would not, without Serpent’s Touch.
Would not Commando be a Warrior specialization?
Oh gawd, I heard we’re getting Clones… Curse you ABC!
last I heard that’s nothing more than a rumour.
As you say.
Currently only a guess (or hope) by many.
I suspect it’s a reaction to the Mesmer being better at Thieves than being evasive and stealthy, now… something that most Thief players I have spoken to always prided themselves on.
The sentiment… “If they steal our Stealth role, we should steal their Illusions trick!”
I feel it is unlikely, however.
I have no problem with the name.
I think it sounds just right.
I find it strange how strongly everyone is sticking to this clones idea.
I understand Mesmers stole our role as the masters of Stealth, but stealing their role does not help us.
That aside, if memory serves, the data mining suggests the skill type will be Physicals.
That said, some form of “Mastermind” Thief added later, who uses summoned Thieves as their primary focus… I could enjoy that.
I still want the summoned Thieves to at least copy the player’s armor color though.
Personally, I’d quite like a few selectable appearances and an armor color selection, however.
Blind if you have to, but if you want to play thief well, don’t rely on winning 1v1s. Get to other existing fights quickly and outnumber the enemy.
Yeah, it’s not like Thieves should be natural predators or anything.
Honestly, 1v1s should be our element. People should stick in groups for fear of being singled out by a Thief.
Not like that’ll ever happen though. Especially now that the Revenent’s Better Thief™ has that on lock.
Staff it is. Hopefully it will be decent as weapon, and hey don’t remove stealth. One thing that I would wish they did is that any staff on a thief would visually look like a naginata or at least a bo staff, but knowing Anet, we will have to run around with glowing sticks and clubs.
With both Revenent and the Daredevil having melee staves, I suspect we will be seeing many more combative-looking bludgeons in the future.
I could spam blinding shot all day on them
Not really.
You can only keep that up for a very short period of time. Initiative management being what it is, it just isn’t going to work for any length of time, and then you get piles of Burning stacks that melt you to death.
Last we tested. Engineer lock on trait applies reveal to thieves but does not strip stealth. It does strip stealth on mesmers so this is a bug. For the time being, make sure you know roughly how much time before lock on is off CD and when you get hit in stealth, don’t attack and just wait out the reveal. I haven’t seen any patch notes addressing this issue so it should still work for now. Let me know if they patched it.
Ah, that sounds about right.
Thieves: If it’s good, it’s probably a bug!™
As far as I can tell, you simply… do not.
They have a wide AOE spray attack that reveals. There is not really a counter to that except, maybe, an offhand pistol for a headshot… but that will only work for a few seconds, and almost certainly precludes a backstab-type build being used.
You could of course go for a stealthless burst Thief… but then your lack of defenses, cleanses and health pool will surely get you killed by Warriors, Guardians, Rangers that focus on burst damage, Elementalists using Fire, Mesmers that you can’t catch because Ricochet is dead, and Engineers with turrets or flamethrowers because you get melted before you can get close.
Ah, and stealthless Thief builds are essentially prey for Stealth Thieves.
We might be able to fight Revenents if we get to them before they are finished, however.
Try not to put all the blames for bad Thief profession on one designer because it is a team effort when it comes to balancing it. As far as we know, Karl might have a lot good ideas for Thief that other designer like Robert and Roy just shut down — thus it looks like their professions look a lot better.
Again, this is just a speculation but I won’t be like one of you guys who blames a particular designer.
However, all the blame will always fall on the head of the balance team — that is his responsibility.
My issue is not about who is at fault… I truly do not doubt that Anet is aware we’re feeling sleighted, and I absolutely do not believe that anyone is trying to leave us in a bad state. I did not at all mean to imply that.
All I want is someone to say “We hear you”
If they’re working on it, I want to be told so. If they don’t know how to fix it, say so.
It’s not the lack of active changes, exactly; The lack of communication about the concerns of the community is the major part of what bothers me. A candid one-sentence acknowledgement would do a great deal to put my fears to rest. It’s all I want, really… some sign that the Six Gods haven’t abandoned us, so to speak.
Maybe the Specialisation can have some light appear for those people who like stealthless type of builds.
We can only beseech the masters of the Arena:
May the #Thuglyfe never die.

but you can’t deny that classes and specs looked after by Gee and Roy have been better thought out, better made, and better maintained that those done by karl. (Rev/Reaper/Chrono work thematically, mechanically and have had great dev interaction – less so on DH/Tempest)
I feel a bit bad saying it, but… I can’t deny it either.
There’s a disparity in quality so far, and it doesn’t make me very hopeful for the Thief reveal.
I really don’t want to seem like I’m putting down our primary dev, but… not sure if it even matters, since all signs seem to indicate that he doesn’t pay any attention to us at all.
I don’t doubt that Karl can do work as elegant as the other devs. It’s more a matter of “does he really even care?”
But then, I guess that the Daredevil is at least potentially the exact thing I want for my Thief (certainly more than the much-predicted sniper would be) so… I may have to eat my words when the reveal hits properly.
Fingers are crossed.
Our prayers have been answered.
/Amen
I stand corrected.
It still remains to be seen if the profession is what the Thief needs, though.
Actually the most accurate thing we could call the thief elite spec is “The Crutch”…since it seems to be the only thing left to hope for to keep us going as a profession lol
Even after all the invested time, maxing out my Thief’s bag slots and getting ascended materials and so on, my position is that the Elite Specialization has to be a total game-changer for the Thief or I’m switching my main to Rev.
I have to.
The Shiro Legend is basically just a better combat Thief, and I have never played with a lot of stealth. The Rev does everything that my Thief does better, and gets a whole other legend. It’s frustrating…Two of their traitlines are all but what ours used to be, no less:
Yeah, I can’t deal with it. It’s everything my Thief is and faster.
You asking me? Cuz idk. I used to be so happy logging on my thief now its like- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WyTj4Sbtulo
It was a rhetorical question. I was just being dramatic.
I lost it. Ran to my Guardian sobbing. Speed leveling guardian to avoid the pain and loneliness of being abandoned on my Thief. =(
I know the feeling…
I hate that I’ve basically been reduced to being a doomsayer, but that’s the way things are going.
Ugh, when did I become so negative…?
I just want tomorrow to be our reveal, so we can breathe a little.
Pretty sure we’re going to be last.
Honestly I wouldn’t be surprised if they announced that the new Thief specialization is the non-optional Prisoner specialization, which locks you in a non-interactive cell so you can’t have any of your bad, bad Thief fun.
Class loyalty is the last thing we have to lose.
oh btw from what i understand the guy responsible for thief spec was also responsible for tempest and dragonhunter…. you can imagine how crappy thief spec will be
Based on their forums the ignored feedback will be the worst part or maybe it’s because he’s on vacation or something.
Vacation. Is that a surprise to anyone? How long do you estimate this one? Sorry im digressing.
I have no idea it’s a different dev that gave out the DH and tempest changes so at least we know Karl is not in the building and thief elite spec is not ready yet. I expect us to go before ranger who are obviously last for unfortunately obvious reasons hopefully he’s back before they announce engi.
Well lets all get our hopes up for tomorrow’s reveal!
Only to be let down because all these Thief threads to try to get a dev to communicate with us is annoying them, thus bumping engi or ranger next in the rotation for reveals.
/gg
assuming we get a reveal tomorrow.
just because it’s long overdue doesn’t mean it’ll be out.
Pretty sure that Engineer is next, since we have replaced them as the game’s most worthless and unloved class now that Anet has given away all of our roles.
Frankly at this point I wouldn’t be surprised if our Elite specialization was, essentially, just a requirement to make Acrobatics worthwhile again. Wouldn’t surprise me to see Thieves needing to take two trait lines just to be good at one thing we’re supposed to be the best at anyway.
If you post it on Reddit, people who hate thieves or don’t main Thieves will start sabotaging the results. It’s a good idea at first because you will get a guaranteed increase in responses but … it’s not the right population sample AT ALL.
Want me to take it down…?
The thing is, you’re not going to get a “right population”… By posting it on these forums (thief forums) you get a biased opinion… by posting it anywhere else, you will get biased hate responses…
Best bet if you can get people from the game to take it…
Point taken. I guess you are right. Let’s hope for the best. Maybe we should add a version that ask the respondent to put select the profession he/she mains.
Yeah let’s leave it there.
Yeah… again, you’re depending on a person’s honesty on the Internet…
But the objective isn’t really to push a point. This forum is basically of one mind, really, it’s just that we have no indication that Anet is even paying any attention to us.
Even if it makes the results messy and unreliable, maybe having it on reddit will at least get Anet to take a look in here and care.
This just makes me want the Thief to truly become the “assassin” class. Being able to punch straight through passive defenses. Aegis, Stability, Protection, mirrors, endures, etc.
Yeah, it may need to be rebalanced. But it needs to be rebalanced now anyway.
But haven’t you heard?
That’s what the Revenant does, because they’re a Better Thief.
For my part, I just want a trait called “Pocket Sand!” that makes blinds do a burst of damage when applied on a short ICD.
hey! That’s good! Just like Reapers cause damage with Chill. Come on, make a quick list before monday!
10 traits, don’t have to be elaborate like the others , and one Elite Skill.
I’m so focused on dreading what we’re going to get that I’m not able to dream about what we could get.
I wasn’t impressed with Dragonhunter, Tempest, or Herald… and not only were they underwhelming, but the team lead who is working on all of them is (as far as I can tell) stretching across more professions than the other ones, which will probably impact the quality significantly.
Basically: There’s really no hope of nice things, so why bother?

Might want to consider this.
For my part, I just want a trait called “Pocket Sand!” that makes blinds do a burst of damage when applied on a short ICD.
I do agree that it feels a bit like Thieves have been abandoned, but let’s not stray into full-on defamation of character.
Being rude to the Developers is not a good way to get them to care about us.
I understand that it’s frustrating, but let’s try to be patient. I’m sure things will get better.
After all, when the game launched, Necromancers were worthless… and look at them now. Our time will come. I’m sure of it.
Alternately, how about Steal being unblockable?
It makes a ton of sense, and would alleviate this problem, which I admit, is major and frustrating.
Edit: Actually, now that I think of it… would that even do anything? I’m not entirely sure how most of these defense traits work, since Thief doesn’t get nice things and it’s been my main from the start.
Actually the most accurate thing we could call the thief elite spec is “The Crutch”…since it seems to be the only thing left to hope for to keep us going as a profession lol

For that matter, does Magic Find apply to these drops, as with normal items?
Or is it effectively just a small static chance to drop?
There is absolutely no level on which this thread is a sign of a good future for humanity.
This is the next generation, ladies and gentlemen.
Bind everything to mouse buttons and do it that way.
