+5% crit chance while over 90% health? There is a sigil that gives +7% crit chance all the time. 50% vulnerability for 5 secs chance on crit? There is a sigil that gives 10 seconds of vulnerability with 60% chance on crit.
This, this, this.
All day, this.
Why are so many of our traits just worse versions of Sigils?
to fix something, you must first admit it is broken

Wasn’t there a joke like that about the Rev’s Jade Winds elite, too?
Instead of turning a whole zone into Jade, we can turn a whole zone into a really crappy, run-down ghetto full of criminals.
I want my character to be able to recline on a stoop with a bottle of liquor in one hand and a pistol in the other.
Thief’s pistols have their barrels extended by 200-300 times the sizes. Range also increased to 1200.
Better this way.
Edit: Oh man..that just made me think of a potential April Fools Joke they could do…stretch weapon models into infinity.
…Wouldn’t that be hell on some of the weaker PCs among us?
Professor X’s School for Gifted Burglars
MASTER: Audacity – When you successfully evade an attack you get a stack of Audacity for 6 seconds allowing you to strike an additional target in front of you with a melee weapon and cause your range projectiles to bounce once. Audacity stacks in intensity up to three times. (so up to five targets on a pistol whip and other sword skills/ potentially three targets on a backstab and five on a death blossom / kicks up the number of targets up to five on staff and up to eight on vault / also ricocheting sneak attacks and unload)
That may be a bit powerful as written, but conceptually it’s very interesting. It also has such wonderful flavor for the Daredevil—so audacious and wild that s/he has no problem overextending to make sure they lay on the hurt, and so slippery that they get away with it.
That kind of thing is the type of ability we should have for DD, in general terms. Everything we’re actually getting is a bit… dull.
In This Thread: People overreacting.
I love the new thief elite spec, and I think it’s great that it draws focus away from stealth and towards the other aspects of thief. Daredevil is the only elite spec I can confidently say I’m definitely going to pursue on any of my characters.
You are well within your right to be pleased with things as they are.
That does not at all invalidate the things others are saying, however, and for you to, essentially, stand before a crowd of dozens and say “Everyone is so wrong… everyone but me.”
Well, it is a bit rude, if nothing else.
Thief’s pistols have their barrels extended by 2-3 times the sizes. Range also increased to 1200.
>not 1,500
>not 1,800
What are we, casuals?
I, for one, picked my Pistol skins on the basis of their lovely, smooth, metallic barrels.
Beautiful, sleek twin pistols…
+1 for you, sir.
Thank you for putting it more eloquently and politely.
If nothing else, it’s motivating me to try and keep a more positive attitude going forward.
but that doesn’t mean that it can just heal through all of the damage that we take.
Really?
That’s exactly what it looked like to me.
They have spammable healing for days
It’s going to be one shot kill them, fully stunlock them, or accept that they’re immortal.
Y’know
Everyone was cracking wise about the name, “huh huh Daredevil makes you a blind superhero” but, y’know
At this point I would accept that.
I would take that.
Sure am happy to have my extra dodge ability… yay -_-
YEAH! Especially since it was outlined that dodging isn’t going to be enough in hot content, woo.
That extra-strength kittened me off, actually.
They’ve been telling us “Just dodge! You can dodge! You’re mobile, did you think about trying to dodge?” all along, and it hasn’t really been up to snuff all along, but we’ve managed… but now it’s going to be entirely useless, and they don’t even care.
552656kitteno.1938:Thief dev needs to listen to our concerns…
We need to let them know that the poor efforts of our elite spec are way too obvious. Daredevil, Tempest and Dragon Hunter are easily the worst elite specs that have been developed.
And Guardian major components are vanishing because some elites spec does the job better (Herald, Scrapper and Druid now…).
Same problem with the Thief’s Stealth (Mesmer does that now) and for those of us, myself included, who were not that kind of Thief—the Revenant does fast melee fighting better than we do, now… not to mention it also provides a little team support as well, in terms of the vuln stacking like mad and other things.
How about simply changing the base HP from lowest to highest (in line with necro and warrior)? Not like thief has access to any reliable protection, stability, aegis, block, or invulnerability. They’ll only have a 1s block in HoT, on a 15s c/d.
To be honest, doesn’t it make sense anyway?
The high health pool is for the athletic (Warrior) and the magically lively (Necromancer)
But isn’t the Thief incredibly athletic as well?
Hell, just have the first Daredevil minor give like 600, 800 Vitality and be done with it.
If the DD is meant to be a tanky survivor, why don’t we get kittening serious?
Why not call it a protest instead…?
At least then it could get Anet to change somethi—ahahaha oh man I couldn’t keep a straight face.
Just saw the end, and he said he sees druid being very strong in WvW “being able to sustain against a whole zerg” ……………………w t f……..no other words
I can’t believe he didn’t notice that he described every single ability as “SO STRONG” and “A BIG GAME CHANGER” and other, similar things.
Who is this man, and why is he not doing our reworks?
We need him.
With his complete inability to be moderate, we’ll get buffed so hard, we’ll actually be on par with the other professions!
The worst part?
She PLAYS a Thief!
She knows full well we’re hurting and being ignored!
Traits:
Deadly arts: 2-2-1
Critical Strikes: 1-2-3Good luck!
Does do you mean by “2-2-1” and “1-2-3” exactly?
…What?
thief, … constantly getting 1 shot … feel like a handicap.
Just, you know, do that thing Thieves are supposed to be great at… dodge
And when you run out of endurance and everyone else is still able to soak damage with their face all day, remember the words: Working as Intended.
Someone posted this and I thought these would work as the new Dash and Bound animations. =)
http://imgur.com/PXuculuEdit: Apparently can’t search it in imgur. It’s basically a near instant slide-port for Dash and a quick flip Bound (opposed to … the uh… thingie we have now).
Although the idea of a shadowstep for a dodge is cool, it defeats the purpose of it being a dodge by removing the evade frames. Karl explained that if it were to have evade frames as a shadow step, it would have to have a wind up time at which point you would have evade frames. He also explained how they could not use new tech to just shadowstep as a dodge fluidly would. It would feel clunky and not path correctly. To me .. This sounds aweful as I like the overall fluid gameplay of a thief pre last betas daredevil, I hope that daredevil will play out fluid as well as they fix all of its issues.
The impression I got from others—and I wouldn’t mind myself—is if it just looked like a Shadowstep.
You know… have the little ‘poof’ effect at the start, some sort of a vague shadowy shape or trail traverse the distance while evading, then ‘poof’ back in. Like the Rev Sword 3, but… shadowy instead of misty.
You know, just for style.
And I don’t think they’d really need to put in a ton of new effort. Shadowstep effects already exist and everyone cares more that it’s cool than they care that it’s new.
Bonus points: if you evade through the shadows, it makes a lot of sense that you could escape immobilize effects. You did just roll through an alternate dimension or something, after all.
…Actually, I’m not entirely sure I understand how Shadowstepping… actually works…?
Improvisation has many more fundamental flaws already, though.
For example, it has an unpleasant sort of RNG where it always recharges things you don’t have equipped, which is not fun.
I’ve put real thought into this one because Improvisation seems fun in theory but is lame in practice. My first thought was having it do some complicated things with internal cooldowns and limiting skill types to what you have equipped, but tech-wise that’s got to be a nightmare.
Here’s an easier idea: Whenever you Steal or use a Stolen Skill (which, of course, you get to use twice) you take 3 or 5 seconds off of a random skill that is currently recharging.
It’s a roughly equivalent amount of recharge taken off, on average, but it’s split up a bit more so that you really feel like you’re making things up as you go.
Even better, that ensures that it’ll be useful for you no matter what you have equipped, without forcing you to equip every skill type or all one skill type to have it function.
Want to have extra frustrating time? Play w/o vamp runes on thief….. :|
If you’re a masochist, play without vamp runes, shadow arts, or any stealth utility on your skill bar.
Apparently I’m a masochist
I’m just not that kind of Thief.
LMAO!!!! your signature is crazy… lol
Why does everyone rip on Dragonhunter? Is it really that bad?
It really is that bad. It has issues down to its core and all of them have had constructive posts with ideas to fix them. However, Karl is in charge of dragonhunter and thinks that adjusting numbers will fix it. It really is no coincidence that Karl is the lead for tempest, dragonhunter, and daredevil.
I’m trying so very hard not to blame one person, or to put a dev down, but… it is a difficult-to-ignore pattern that the worst Elite Specializations are all led by the same person…
Hm, afaik macros are not allowed.
I get messages like this every single week, don’t think to much about it.I do not know what afaik macros are.
As Far As I Know.
Common internet acronym.
More importantly, how did you actually manage to fight those classes with the Thief as it is? What sort of build are you using? Were they just terrible at their class or using some strange build?
I have an inordinate amount of trouble fighting any of these classes, so it’s strange to hear…
Yeah. It’s weird, in beta we get the whole thing unlocked, but in live many players will have to unlock the class bit by bit, and might end up playing a DD that doesn’t have any of the new dodges. It just wouldn’t make any sense.
The real issue is that we’ve basically been told “No actual Grandmaster trait for you!”
Which, frankly, is bullkitten and unfair.
No other Elite Spec had their Grandmaster taken away and made into an unlock for their mechanic change.
Utilities:
- Fist Fury. Make the Palm Strike automatic if you are allowed to use it, no extra button press.
- Impact Strike. Make the three hit string a single button press activation, like with the Scrapper’s leap attacks. Also, make the final strike generate your finisher animation in PvE, ideally every time you use it, but at the very least if you kill anyone during it.
Both of these would actually be a significant nerf.
The key point is that the Palm Strike and the other combo don’t require you to keep the same target. You can use one person as set-up and then palm strike another target.
In PvE it’s nice because you can use it to keep the party going on a second target.
- Provide a way to change Dodge types without having to go into the trait menu. Ideally this would either be a toggle that rotates through them on f3, or individual buttons for each on f3, f4 and f5. These don’t have to function during combat, even out of combat usage would be nice, but in combat would be very cool, and to many minds not imbalanced.
- Ideally, the GM traits would not be taken up providing the basic “alternate dodge” functionality. Ideally, the three dodges would come unlocked with the minor trait.
It’s still really absurd that we have our mechanic locked up in the trait menu, while everyone else’s is just open and available as part of their minor.
I suggest you wait for HoT to be able to play S/P more smoothly.
I dunno. During the beta weekend, I found it really clunky to try and play S/P with the Daredevil, just because every Pistol Whip locks you in place. It’s a real pain.
OK. Well we had 3x of these thieves tonight. Must be a serious L2P issue on my part
The reason you see this sort of thing a lot is because there are very few functional Thief builds anymore.
Our dodge is still the coolest in the game.
Only because the BetterThief’s misty dodge effect isn’t in yet.
Now, Karl needs to get to work and make the new dodge animations as good as the old one.
I find it really amazing that people still honestly think we’re going to get any of our placeholder animations replaced with real ones.
That’s too bad since we’ve been stuck reading your “ideas” for years
Not that I want to be part of this argument, but… why the quotation marks?
Are you accusing this person of being incapable of forming ideas?
When a net see’s threads like this I wounder why they even do anything any more
But they don’t do anything anymore.
They don’t even bother nerfing us now
They just buff everyone else and let us suffer, ignored.
I heard that sword/pistol is pretty good,
I play a Sword-Pistol Thief exclusively and have since the first week of the game.
If someone told you Sword-Pistol is good, they lied.
Patience is a virtue, but hope is a limited resource.
I have lost hope that Arenanet will stop taking Thief players for granted…
I am regretting purchasing the expansion now.
The counter play is destroy the drone.
And while we’re doing that, the Engineer will be busily destroying us.
A Thief would die before they killed the Drone. We’re too squishy to handle being hit by a single target.
Silly Thief, we aren’t allowed to have nice things even when it’s only cosmetic.
That’s why the Revenant gets a newer, shinier version of our Dodge fluff on top of their interface fluff and special sound effects.
I like it.
It makes sense.
It has a place. Therefore Anet will never implement it.
They deleted a popular trait in favor of keeping a crumby trait nobody ever used while there is a sigil that does the same thing but way better.
#AnetLogic
You get my +1
It’s the only thing we’re good for anymore, anyway.
With this apocalyptic mess going around us, we need this guys. Not even joking, we need every extra second or fraction of a second we can get out of this.
Might as well make BD refill all Initiatives on a successful block.
Still wouldn’t make the Thief good.
We can still be killed by a stern look.
I laughed, then felt a little sad.
I was just thinking: given all the nerfs to thieves and all revealed/anti stealth mechanics handled to other classes, doesn’t it mean that devs want thief to be unplayable? Isn’t it direct attempt to prevent thief players from taking part in tournaments? Shouldn’t we able to report this somehow?
What are you trying to do, exactly? Complain to the police that the game devs are being unfair?
Don’t expect the investors to give a kitten either.
at this point i think all thieves should gather and write letter to Anet with complains about discrimination from dev team
You’re on it.
The Thief forum is one long, endless report of all the reasons we’re miserable and hated.
This sucks.
That’s just low and I ain’t about that life.
Gotta be about that #Thuglyfe
Gotta roll deep, no matter how bad it gets.
Never give up, gangsta
“Hands up, Don’t Nerf.”
“Thief Lives Matter.”
Infraction in 3… 2… 1…
Only initiative is truly unique to us.
It also makes us SLOWER, not faster.
Compared to a Warrior who can spend his cooldowns and then change weapons to spend a fresh pile of cooldowns, as a Thief you can do the same number of skills or less before you’re out of Initiative, then you swap weapon sets and… can’t do anything.
You are required to take Trickery, and most people need to take RFI as well.
The Initiative system is crap. It should have fewer init-restoring options, but regenerate faster baseline. As it is, it makes us worse, not better.
I am not sure if our dev is actually reading all our threads.
Probably.
They have to fix our class. Please take sometime to read our issues and fix it.
Unlikely.
I miss it tbh. Seeing a Headshot bounce three times was hilarious! Same with Unload and lucky rng against a ranger.
Ricochet never bounced to a previously hit target, so I’m not sure why the ranger is significant.
Thieves are so weak that we actually have to worry about Ranger Pets, unlike literally everyone else. Stunning them both was nice.
Haha lulz the ranger pet.
Being a non-Stealthing Thief is true suffering.
In PvP, Rangers don’t even bother to fight me. They sic their pet on me to keep me fighting for my life while they deal with the real professions… and the worst part is that it works.
It takes me two full Pistol Whips to down a Ranger pet, and in that time I’ll have taken a bunch of damage from the pet and AOEs, not to mention a ton of time.
Thief is pathetic…
I was playing my ranger with a greatsword the other day and noticed how smooth the run and leap animation was, and after playing since launch noticed the leap part was an evade. It just feels so fluid.
So I thought perhaps vualt could get the same treatment, but instead of an evade why not a teleport at the end of the animation when the daredevil is descending. Not only would it make vualt distinct from the grandmaster dodge bound , it would also give an alternative to shortbow.
Just a thought in the shower but I would love to see this, if only for the cool factor.
That would be visually awesome for a Thief, actually, and it’d let them make a nice big swoopy jump without having the skill feel slow and clunky like it does right now.
If you want to run an inferior weapon set
What is “all of them”?
Try playing S/P. Try it.
Maybe Ranger, Engi, and Revy should be the only professions with vulnerability stacking and War, Guard, and Ele
So you want to take the three most powerful professions and a smattering of the decent ones and make them the only ones worth playing…?
What about the Mesmer, who has a handful of traits around Vuln, and uses it as one of their key conditions?
What about the Thief, who needs to be good at something and for a condition that sets the target up makes a ton of sense? What about their thematic nature, focusing their power into one mighty strike with strange martial techniques?
What about the Necromancer, who is meant to be the master of curses and hexes, the grand poobah of conditions? What about the making of blood pacts to boost their power, or the ability to drain the power of others?
Honestly, the only one of the ones you posted where Vuln is truly thematically integral is Ranger.
Might kinda makes sense for everyone in small doses, though nobody should have as easy a time stacking it as many classes do now.
while doing as good as nothing against condition builds.
This is the real problem. It takes like three burning stacks two seconds to down most Thieves and there’s almost nothing you can do about it.
We need fixes for that.
