Thanks for the news. I currently find myself only playing Solo Q tourney until I win a game and then take a break from it for an hour or so to allow for different rosters, especially if I just played in a vastly lopsided match.

On the topic of hotjoin, we hope that once the dust settles, players will drop the farm mentality and start playing to win. The existing system has been in for quite a while, so it may take some time for the entire player base to adapt. We’ll be rolling out additional changes in the future that should incentivize playing to win even more.
Thanks for the response. I would feel that any change that encourages reward for “play to win” versus farming will always be the better choice. That said, good luck. Your team fixed the problem of farming and I will look forward to seeing the future changes.

I like the idea of tournament matches offering more reward. That being said, the system seems very counter productive to “the vision of hot joins.”
Prior to Allie going “afk” and Grouch coming in to take over, their were a few comments she made about wanting hot joins to be a place for players to grow as pvp’ers and learn, but you have to remember people need to feel like the effort they put into a game is worth it. This change literally removes any incentive to play harder in hot joins. Now don’t come at this statement with the response “If you win, you get more points” because that statement should hold true with any game, whether it is online gaming or a scrabble tournament. What this change has done is forced the players who are already playing hard to possibly have to play harder because the system can be easily exploited by people who just aren’t trying because they get a flat rate. At least people who farmed in game mechanics had to offer some sort of support, if it was minor. A farmer can’t get points if your not hitting people with the cannon. Ultimately, it seems like a blanket fix to glory farming, but hurts those grinding the sPVP levels legitimately. Don’t say, “Play more tournies” as it is no secret the queue system is flawed and I still may get ranked with sub level 10’s, even though I am 30+.
Grouch, you are a bit of an sPVP celebrity since you are the “player who become a dev.” I know you have a desire for the community growth that did not start because you were getting paid to. Now that is just a bonus for you. After seeing you on a live stream, I have seen where you have learned that sometimes you can’t say things because their is probably a policy in place on how you can deliver your opinions on the product that is GW2, aka “We can’t talk about that right now, but soon.” But I am going to ask this anyway. Do you think this is the best approach to earning the grindy ranks or will this not be the final change to how people earn rank? Does this change emphasize the desire Allie mentioned to grow hot joins as a thriving resource for new players to grow or is it taking a step away from that approach to direct the issue of farmers?
Sorry if it sounds troll, not trying to be. Maybe discussion for a different thread, but perhaps hot join servers that have rank requirements to enter would be a better way to grow the hot join community. Example servers that require being 1-15, 16-29, 30-40, 40+ . Each server offering an enhanced glory/rank reward as you tier up and grow as a player. This would probably keep less afker’s and sand baggers out of upper tier, more competitive hot joins and actually make earning rank feel a little more rewarding because you know that their is a better chance that as you rank the games will get better.

I rather enjoyed state of the game at first, but as it went on the “demeanor” of the show seemed to change. Some of the “Pro” players would ask questions or make statements that would get very little response from the devs during the cast. I am not saying the Devs would sit their and be silent, but you started to hear very canned responses…
“We are aware of this happening but…”
“We are going to work on this…”
“We are working on something but can’t say anything…”
It almost makes me wonder if this is why SoTG is not happening any more. These type of responses were very “safe” responses that never would really answer, or even offer any true insight, towards the questions or statements made by the players. Some times you would see a player continue to dig for an answer, obviously showing some sort frustration in their face while they figure out how to use this time to get some kind of answer, and have the devs follow with “You’re right. It’s something that should be addressed” and the topic is dropped.
I always felt the show was intended to give more clarity on exactly what was happening in the Dev scene, but answers seemed very much similar to what you would find in the forums. Dev’s always seem to play their cards so close to their chest because they don’t want to get anyone excited for something that may not work. Because of that, the show started to get very stale and just turn into a vent fest with very little “insider” insight that I would think the Devs were their to facilitate. The least they could do is say something “unofficial” and offer their two cents on what they feel should be tried, if nothing was in development towards a questions / statement. Rarely they would step out and say things off the cuff. Anything would be better than “We are aware of this happening but…”

The “I’m ready” button is rather useless in its current form. It literally does nothing in regards to actually serving any real purpose to the game. Just a little check mark for players to see…
The mechanic to prevent afk’ers at the beginning and games starting without a full team seem to be in the game already. Why has this button not been used as some kind of counter to the game server that the teams are actually full and ready to play? If you don’t ready up, then get removed from the server and have the server pull one more from the queue.

^^^ – What he said. +1
Regarding the match end reward change: There is a middle ground between discouraging leaving, and making hot join a complete waste of time unless you’re present at the end of match. I think this can be accomplished by simply greatly improving match end bonuses rather than by removing all progression during matches as you have done. Especially when some of your most dedicated players use hotjoin as a way to squeeze in a bit of extra progression in between ranked games. The last thing you should be doing right now is making progression even slower for them…
www.twitch.tv/the_chach – Random sPVP/WvW
@Sudden – That’s not the way multicore CPUs are designed. All the cores connect a single memory subsystem. There’s also a problem with your premise which is each set of threads running on an individual core needs as much memory as threads running on a different core. I’m going to guess that most of the memory being used is to cache zone and critter geometry/textures as well as sound/music data and not dynamically used by the program.
I would tend to agree with that as well.

These OOM errors are either a system configuration issue, OS problem, or some type of hardware failure regarding the RAM.
Or an actual bug that has plagued this game since launch. It used to actually say “Out of Memory” in the crash logs and then they changed it to “OOM” at some time. So many threads in this section that directly reference the dreaded “OOM” crashes. Anything from sub par machines to top of the line. To date, I believe Anet has detailed absolutely no real fix to the error, other than suggesting go to 64 bit OS, but even 64 Bit OS users get it…
Unless I am wrong and a fix is available, if so please do direct me to it.
Is there even a thread from Anet that details exactly what the error is?

(edited by Sudden.8729)
I assume everything you said as well. The only thing that really had me wondering was the idea of multi cores individually utilizing its own RAM allocation and possibly allowing more RAM usage.
I too would like to see a 64 bit client. I bet that would resolve alot of these OOM crashes, but I also do not see something like that in any possible near future. Wishful thinking though.
www.twitch.tv/the_chach – Random sPVP/WvW
I was diagnosing a problem at work today that revolved around whether or not adding more RAM would help this person perform some work duties. I contemplated the idea for a bit. The old saying, adding more RAM is always beneficial rolls through the head, but then it hit me that this person was using a 32 bit application. A 32 bit application is typically said to not be able to utilize more than 4 Gigs of RAM. This statement is independent on OS being 32 bit or 64. Yes, a 64 bit OS can utilize more than 4 Gigs but a 32 bit application still is limited to the 4 Gig mark. Perhaps applications that utilize multiple cores on CPU’s could independently utilize up to 4 Gigs per utilized core process but I am not sure if that statement is true.
Then I left work mode and went to fun and thought about GW2 and the ever problematic “OOM” crashes. So the question is:
Is the current GW2 client only going to utilize a total of 4 Gigs of RAM, even if I have more loaded on a 64 bit OS?

www.twitch.tv/the_chach – Random sPVP/WvW
On one hand, I see what Allie is trying to say, they want to grow the player base, but the change in how glory was earned was not delivered to the community as a tool to grow player base, we were told it was to fix exploiting. The fix is very much like the days of a rowdy classroom where the teacher would say “If any else acts up, you all lose recess.” Someone will almost always act up and the class grows frustrated with that person but, also with the teacher for punishing everyone for someone else’s mistake. The thing that makes the class happy again is getting to back to recess the next day. This community is waiting to go back to our “recess” of progression.
You state you are looking for a non-bias opinion but most all of your responses point to a very clear bias towards the hot join. It’s clear that is the tool you think is going to grow the player community; even when the existing community is trying to steer you towards giving more attention to other problems that should be addressed first that we feel would make the community grow:
1. People who join hot join while waiting for solo queues can not help the queues can take in excess of 15 minutes at times. Players have no way to gauge how long we will have wait, so we join hot joins. You don’t want us to leave, atleast give us a better UI to understand at what step of the matchmaking we are sitting. If I think I am going into a match soon, I wouldn’t join into a hot join nearly as much and I am one less player leaving in the middle of the match.
2. PVP Levels are a GRINDFEST. I am coming up on a year of playing GW2. Never have “farmed glory”, just play the game. While the first few months I did very little PVP, I have done it almost daily for the last 6 months or so. I am only level 32… Either alter the exp caps for levels or give me another way to earn level. Maybe random drops of exp similar to what WvW has now. Atleast if I get one while I play a hot join and have to leave cause the queue popped I still have a chance of gaining something towards my progression.
3. Possibly add PVP experience and Glory bonuses for completing PVP achievemnts such as the ones that say “Win X amount of matches” or “Play X amount of matches as this class” etc.
Just some ideas. You want to grow new players, then take the approach that this game has seemed to take since day one. Give new players new toys at a quicker basis, give them something more than achievement points and titles that take a long time to get legitimately. New players typically want instant gratification. Get the hook in their mouths at least. Just don’t keep telling your existing player base that “hot joins” are what will bring the new players into the community cause it is a little patronizing; not saying you mean to be but it is.
www.twitch.tv/the_chach – Random sPVP/WvW
Glory is practically useless without PVP level/rank (don’t wan the term to get mistaken for leader board rank but rather the PVP equivalent of a PVE level.) The only thing a level 3 player can get that a 10+ can get is tokens for dye consumables for the forge.
That being said, my biggest problem as a legitimate player is that the level gaining is a grind. If I want more armor/finishers options I have to level up. I think GW2 has made most acquisitions in the game fairly non-grindy. Sure some achievements are long but those are achievements, not acquisitions. sPVP seems to have missed this concept. If I want new armors, I have to get new tokens. To get new tokens I have to level up and salvage the award chests or buy with glory from level merchants
Here lies the problem. I don’t want sPVP to become a grind to get rewarded. I want to experience the new stuff that comes with leveling up. Unlike some other aspects of GW2, I don’t know exactly how many matches it takes to level because the points vary with every game. But I want to raise up on leader board and step out of lower tier Solo Q’s. Due to the change, I now have to make a choice as a player. Do I want to spend my time playing against other pvper’s, of hopefully similar skill levels, by riding up the leaderboard in a timely fashion OR do I advance my PVP Level in hot joins so I can acquire new armor and finishers. I can not reliably do both any more since I do not know how long the hot join will last or how long the queue wait will be. Before the change I had the best of both worlds, now I don’t. I now have to choose, spend time leveling PVP or spend time raising up in the leaderboard.

It’s still a random CC, and random CC is bad. End of story.
And thanks for belittling me but I already run with two stun-breakers, that’s not the problem. I don’t really think they are massively overpowered per se but getting randomly feared isn’t fun, even if they do have a 90 second ICD.

GW2 has done a great job in weeding out random CC elements that used to convoluted previous generations of MMOs. It has been generally accepted that random CC effects are undesirable and unfun.
It seems though as if the Superior Runes of the Nightmare have been overlooked and I think this ought to be remedied. The 5% chance to fear someone when hit can…occasionally result in some really frustrating chain-fears that need not be.
Typically, your first statement seems to be made by people using RNG items. They are undesirable and unfun because you don’t know when they are going to proc, hence unreliable.
Then you make a statement of them proc’ing too much against you. It’s a 5% chance with a 90 second cooldown. 5% with the RNG in this game is not really that high, or that is what people would scream if it was a 5% drop on something they wanted. They are Necromancers, they are suppose to induce fear. That’s kinda the lore behind a necro…
At end of day, Stun Breakers are your friend. You may need to remove a skill to get one, but if you don’t have one in the toolbar already then you are probably getting eaten up by more than just necros.

Why do I sense a great deal of sarcasm from you…?
We really do value your opinions and find the ideas discussed here useful.
For example, just last week I’ve spent some time trying to figure out how easy/difficult it would be to pull in users from the yolo queue to fill in the missing spots., which was not part of the original technical design.
I know someone here will probably think less of me for admitting that oversight, but I think it’s more important to show that we take you seriously.
Don’t think less at all. Glad to hear you are trying this suggestion. You mention spending last week looking into this type of fix. What was the progress?
www.twitch.tv/the_chach – Random sPVP/WvW
This change really does hurt the legitimate pvp’er. I too would hot join while waiting for a queue to pop. I still do because I enjoy playing the game, but at the same time I would like to progress my character. Sometimes I finish matches within the time, sometimes I don’t.
Part of the problem is that earning PVP levels is such a grind. It can take so many completed matches to gain a level. Sure, level means nothing to some, but it does offer some reward such as a different rank finisher to show progress (still waiting to see a dragon finisher on me) or skins you can’t get at lower levels.
While I honestly do not see the change of finishing a match to get points being reverted back, how about a compromise. Allow the “Glory Booster” to increase glory earned AND increase PVP level points earned. Or create a “PVP Exp Booster.” Perhaps make it something that comes from Gold Rank chests or Tourney chests.

This bug is old, and I know for fact has been reported by someone in my guild, I believe he mentioned reporting it more than once. Completely game breaking bug that can allow someone to crash people at will. Their is a running joke in the guild to get the guildy invited into other guilds during WvW and link something; I repeat that it is a joke and does not actually happen. The OP’er is not blowing smoke and the bug does exist and it blows my mind that it has not seemed to be taken seriously. I would think instant game crashing bugs that can be reproduced at will would have a little more attention drawn to it.
To clarify, it is not item specific. I believe any item causes it.
www.twitch.tv/the_chach – Random sPVP/WvW
I for one love the idea of sPVP. My gaming background comes from smaller number competition (FPS games, pre 30+ man servers.) I would venture to say I prefer sPVP to WvW most of the time. When I want to step away from the grind of farming gold/items for a legend precursor, I go to sPVP.
I had easily over 300+ matches in Team Tournaments before they implemented Solo queues. I was so exited for Solo queues because no longer was I going to pug with people who obviously did not know the mechanics against premades. As a community we asked for Solo Queue and we got it. The work is obviously not over.
While I appreciate the amount of time that has gone into trying to balance classes in sPVP, I think the PVP Dev Team may be misplacing priority of issues. No matter how much class balancing you do, talent of a player always plays the baseline of how difficult a fight is going to be. That means to have a chance of a fun match, win or lose, you need players of similar talent levels. I would think Solo Queue was implemented to create that need, but it is obvious something is not right. I, as a player, could care less that you balanced my ability to play against another class if I am getting teamed with people who don’t know what a treb is or how tranquility works. I am PVP rank 31, not farmed FYI, and get lumped in with players sub level 10. I know Anet wants the community to thrive; fixing this is the first start, not any further class balance. Stop any other PVP project, give yourself a deadline of a week to implement tests directly related to this problem. Maybe implement an algorithm that incorporates PVP level as well; anything to keep the level 4 player out of a level 30+ match…
www.twitch.tv/the_chach – Random sPVP/WvW
Can we at least have the game perform an internal check to verify both teams have five players before the matches start? If a team does not have five players, have the game pull the next player that initiates a solo queue into the game. I would think that would be a fairly simple thing to code.
www.twitch.tv/the_chach – Random sPVP/WvW
Ok, so would it be so hard to put an in game check in place for solo queue matches that start without both teams having five people on the server??? It seems like something that would be simple in the world of coding yet so many matches start with uneven teams.
Would it help if we called it a “Quality of Life” enhancement. That seems to be the buzz word now a days.

Just played another game trying that same method and got credit. So shrug .
www.twitch.tv/the_chach – Random sPVP/WvW
Ok, so think this is what happened that led to me noticing:
1. Joined Solo Q.
2. Hotjoined while waiting.
3. Queue popped while in hot join and I clicked “Go Now”
4. Played tourney match and lost (with points earned)
5. Match ended and got no points. No UI emblems appeared saying I gained any glory.
Basically, unless you complete the hot join match you are playing before joining the tourney match, you will get no points at all for tourney play.
Not sure if win is giving points. Not sure if it is even registering a win/loss for the tourney game played.

My only advice, as someone who built a new gaming rig over the last 9 months, is this…
No matter how attractive the price is, do NOT NOT NOT get a motherboard/CPU for an AMD processor.
In regards to GW2, Intel processors will smoke the hell out of any comparable AMD processor. GW2 is just not optimized for AMD processors.
I built mine with an AMD processor and I am kicking myself in the tale everyday since I learned how bad GW2 is when it comes with performance and AMD processors.

Actually, you’re at ~3 gigs. Windows cannot allocate much more than 3GB; we can see that below.
“Physical: 475MB/ 3045MB 15%” Windows is only allowingThat is your issue; you are running out of memory. Drop your graphics settings down and you should be fine in the interim. However, you really need to go back to a 64-bit system.
It is a 4 Gig Ram Module, I assure you. It says that in the log due to the Windows 7 32 bit RAM limit. The availability of ~3 Gigs is due to the ram being shared amongst other hardware/software.
I would really hope that is NOT causing the problem, as most anyone with a 32 bit Windows installed with max RAM loaded for the OS would have very similar numbers and would exhibit similar problems.

So I have been playing for a while on a rig and all has worked great. Recently, the SSD in my gaming rig went out, and I am using a platter drive I had from my previous rig. Befire the SSD died, I ran the game on max settings fairly smooth.
The Problem: If I play the game in any setting other than the absolute lowest then I will typically crash within minutes. In WvW, in LA, in Personal Story instances, doesn’t matter. Many times I will see the “rainbow color” menus. I can’t even set the game to one level higher on the “Model Limit” setting without crashing.
I have done the following:
-Reloaded video card drivers
-Reloaded DirectX June 2010 SDK and latest web installer (web installer says all is updated)
- Deleted GW2.dat and re-downlaoded
- Deleted the Document folder GW2 local.dat file
The game is literally unplayable in any setting other than absolute lowest. The crash log always screams of various types of missing models or texture errors. I really thought deleting the dat and getting a fresh one would correct the issue but it had no help at all. Any idea at all would be greatly beneficial. I have a gaming rig that has run at max settings for many months. The only difference is that I am running 32 bit Windows 7 instead of 64 Bit, so had to drop from 8 gigs to 4 gigs.

To the OP’er;
If a game does not create new content, it becomes the game becomes stale. What was great a year ago, in almost any thriving MMO, is typically not always the best today. People who wanted the best a year ago pay a price premium to get it first (or even later as time goes on.) When new stuff comes out, I don’t feel it is intended to be a slap in the face of the player, its meant to be exciting and new. Suck it up and get ready for new stuff.
You wouldn’t cuss out a hardware provider for providing new hardware, no matter how much you paid for the old stuff. Give that same courtesy to software/game developers.

I was working out of town alot around the time that the Solo Queue was new; so I didn’t get to set a rating while the games were hot.
Now that I have time to check it out, I can rarely get a full team game in. I am stuck in nubsville rating and can’t get enough games in with full teams to move out of that neighborhood.
Then, you also have new players trying to get into sPVP and this is the experience they are having to deal with too.
Old players are losing interest in trying to play; new players are getting introduced to a less than enjoyable experience. How is this issue not addressed by an A-Net Dev? Has it been addressed?

One more quick thing to show an example of drop in play.
sPVP rank 28. None of that with mindless rank farming. All points earned by actually playing games, whether it is hot join or Tourney.
Team Queue rating 45%, 131 wins, 125 losses (my queuing typically resembled solo, which is why I wanted it.)
Solo Queue… well I know I have played several games, but my name doesn’t even appear. Perhaps it is because I am so tired of playing 4v5’s that I have been de-ranked due to inactivity and the mass amounts of losses that are a direct result of 4v5 or 3v5’s?

I am like some, in the fact I was excited to have solo queue. I did want solo queue and still do, but quite frankly it has completely turned me off from sPVP. I am so annoyed about the amount of 4v5, even 3v5, starts I have been in.
I am not one of the players who was bashing sPVP before leaderboards and or any of the other additions. I enjoy sPVP for what it is; 5v5 capture and hold an area style of play. I come from a first person shooter background and timed competition is at the heart of those kind of games.
Now, when I think about playing sPVP solo Q, well now I don’t even want to bother. I use to play tournaments fairly regularly. I think I had over 250 tourney matches in before the new queues. Now I have to reestablish myself for solo, and it is completely jacked up. It seems more than 40% of the games I have tried to solo Q start with my team having less than 5 people. So basically, I have lost at least 40% of my matches before the game even starts.
Trolls are going to troll, but it just seems that this issue is not being taken seriously enough yet. I am that player A-Net wants in sPVP. I want to play it without some kind of special incentive. I could give a crud less about not having anything to spend glory on. I want to convince people to play with me because the game type is actually about playing a defined game… Now, hell I have cut back on even loading the game for anything. The thing I enjoyed the most is being ruined by people who don’t like it and A-Net, whether you like hearing it or not, you are giving these people a free pass and those trolls are pushing people away from the game.
Enough ranting and now I offer my two cents on possible things to help. A-Net, you will never be able to stop someone from shutting down the game, so don’t even bother with that idea (if you were.)
1. Instant solo and hot join lockout if you leave a game you were queued for. If a person’s client “crashes” for legitimate or artificial reasons, only allow a box to re-enter queued game. If someone clicks to join any other queue, tourney or hot, then they are greeted with a box of some type informing them that can not join any other game for XX amount of time. The time period should be enough to deter trolls, perhaps the full time length of a tourney map.
2. If teams are in the server during the pre-game countdown, and BOTH teams do not have 5 people at the end of the pre-game countdown, have the server restart the pre-game time clock and instantly go and grab a solo queued player. The game does not start until both teams have five players.
Please A-Net, do something quick about this. I want to play but the enjoyment I had is almost completely gone, and I don’t care how many rewards you throw at me to come back. If this kind of problem is not dealt with more urgency, then this will be one more player who will stop casually even trying to play the game I enjoyed from the beginning… Not trying to make any type of threat, just being 100% honest and hopefully someone who can help will not dismiss this post as another trolling post.

To GuilguiS, you may see the change as a hindrance, but you are forgetting that the same “hindrance” is being presented to both teams. It might not be the perfect cup of tea for you, but the argument can be answered in real world logic.
Perhaps you were part of a school group that had the “uncool” uniform. It wasn’t what you wanted to wear but it was required. Standing by yourself, you may have felt uncomfortable, but when you stood in a room with many people who also had to wear the uniform, well it didn’t seem as bad and you had some fun along the way.
In closing, you still want to have control to choose your uniform cough maps cough but at the end of the day you are all having to deal with the same standard as everyone else.

Thanks for the response Tyler. Much appreciated.

Solo players can queue in the team queue too but I’d not count on it. :p
As stated by the A-Net live stream today 2-5 players can queue in team queue. So, they never state that a single person can enter team queue. One could yell for a player in the mist, but if no one joins are you stuck until you find your own fifth?
We can all assume an answer, but was curious what the correct answer is.
