As a member of SBI from release onward, I’m also going to say I will never leave this server. We fight as hard as we can, but more importantly we have fun while doing it. Trolls get talked down really quick and it’s easier to find examples of kindness and respect than it is of the opposite.
We’ve been through a lot, and with the loss of a LOT of WvW guilds we’re going to drop tier, but we won’t stop fighting and having fun. If you want fun and community, SBI is the place to go.
I don’t know if this has been reported yet, but I love doing scepter on necromancer and it pops up often when I’m in dungeons. The gist of it is that if I’m mid-animation on one of the chain skills and attempt to dodge, my endurance is spent, the motion half-executes, and I evade absolutely nothing. In other words, unless that half-movement manages to get me out of an AoE circle, I take full damage. It’s exceptionally frustrating when it occurs against tough bosses like Subject Alpha or Lieutenant Kholer.
Pretty exciting, but there’s a lot of weird stuff too…
I juts logged off after defending the Hills in JQ BL 3 times in a row against simultaneous attacks from SBI on south gate and JQ on north gate… Quite a weird timing once, but what’s the chance of that happening 3 times in 4 hours ?
Also quite weird how SBI made it in once and only entered trough the south gate to kill our north gate siege equipment then got out without even trying against the inner hills keep that had 0 defensive siege…
To me that says a lot about the kind of players in the opposition.
I’ll bite on this one. JQ’s main objective on their own borderlands should be to hit the weaker target keep, whichever server is putting up less defense, or if the orb is held by a keep that one. By pressuring the keeps they deflect attention away from any organized push on the northern towers or garrison. So it’s not atypical for them to be attacking it.
If SBI found it very easy to put southern pressure on you so that you’re less of a threat to their own northern aspirations, or if you held orb (don’t know if you did, but if you did then it’s VERY obvious why they’d attack), then it’s fairly obvious why they should do that.
Also note that this is Tier 1. There is at least one person on every single map who is staring at every single instance of crossed swords, especially orange ones. If either server consistently sees an attack that is Not Theirs at a location, they know that the opposite attack angle is likely not prepared to respond, and if it is it’ll be weaker for having to fend off the first attack. So the “tag-team” was very likely both teams seeing a weakpoint and attempting to exploit it. Good on you for making it not work.
As for SBI just leaving, did you check the map to see if a major attack was in progress on the other side of the map, or if stuff was getting taken by JQ? Clearing siege is always beneficial and doesn’t take long. Fighting in the lord’s room even without siege defense is a pain against any response by the enemy and takes very long. Very likely they cleared the siege that they could now that they could see it, then ported to spawn and responded to the attack over on the west side.
So no, SBI and JQ are not out to get you, not in an alliance, or any other such paranoid tripe. You were just the easier target. Welcome to 2v1s, welcome to Tier 1.
Any group comp that isn’t considered “functional” but with player skill is just as effective as more typical fare. I have done…
…A group with no melee or heavy (fwd/fwd TA)
…A group with no engineer or ele (Hodgins and Tzark AC)
…A group with necros and mesmers instead of eles and guardians (my usual group for everything from HotW to AC).
…A group with a support thief (AC, all paths)
As someone who wants to see more top-tier servers instead of the same cliche 4, please people transfer. I’m tired of running into bandwagoners (SBI had them for a time), let’s get in the mode of wanting to kick kitten and take names instead of everyone lumping onto the clear winner. Competition is fun, curbstomping is boring for all involved.
Bigger issue is that you can dodge the attack or not even be in the area of effect, walk into the zone the scavenger is “eating” and get instant kd and watch your hitpoints evaporate. This is especially annoying because the range on it is way bigger than the scavenger would allude. Being killed after doing the right thing by what appears to be a glitch is a total pain.
- Presently bugs so that people with shadowstep skills can glitch through at certain points of the wall.
Forgive me, but mesmers doing what exactly?
I’ve got a Level 50 who has been leveled purely from WvW. The only reason my repair bill is so high is because I deliberately do suicidal actions for the betterment of the team (zerging the ballista to take it down, convincing people to push into the enemy by doing it myself first). I only just started crafting in any real sense yesterday on him. Yes, I rage when a Level 80 thief picks me off in the middle of nowhere and roasts me in 5 seconds, but I spec the perma-swiftness of an engineer and a metric ton of toughness (Level 50 and I have 20 points in the trait line). I’ve been known to get completely away from full mobs that couldn’t immobilize or stun me consistently.
Have friends, be around some kind of group, and never underestimate just how effective siege equipment is.
Rommel’s right. If the very first orb carrier is killed or dies, the orb icon disappears and does not reappear. This has led in every single case that I have seen to the defending team thinking they got it back and that it will just respawn back at north in xx minutes, when either the same team that took it or the other one are merrily running away to their keep with their invisible orb. I haven’t reported it on the forums up until this point (but twice via in-game bug reporter and once via the exploits email) because I feel that this behavior is exploitable, even if it hasn’t been yet.
I’m going to chime in and say, why is it wrong to congratulate a hard-fighting rival? Sure, in the game it’s war, but it’s still a game that can be won and lost and nobody actually died for it. People saying that two teams complimenting each other as actual sportsmen is evidence of alliance are reading things in that aren’t there. Who says that we have to absolutely hate and despise our opponents? I love the challenge they bring and the constant demand to play better, play smarter.
And we’re well aware of how much siege you broke at Stargrove. Had your Fortify Keep upgrade not finished when it did though, that would have been a very different story. Also be aware of how many bodies you threw at that supply camp only to have them all die. Superior treb positioning was the only thing we were worried about.
If you’re playing against an evenly matched or superior server, costs go up significantly. I’m on SBI playing against HoD and JQ, and in the average session of play (5-6 hours) I will die between 6-8 times, and I play defensively most of the time. Almost all of the deaths were knowing suicides to help break an impossible situation. The folks who are always running the zerg likely have even higher bills than mine and I barely make a profit in WvW buying only the occasional siege.
Also going to +1 on the fact that we’re not playing for second. We’ve exceeded HoD’s point gain total numerous times during primetime, we just lose it when JQ goes Blood Feud or off-peak people aren’t playing as well.
Yeah, I always queue on SBI Borderlands and I’ll say it for the third or fourth time: get over yourselves and play smart already. I’m at the point of raging when all you do on that map is zerg the crap out of SBI stuff when HoD is wide open because of how occupied they are with us. HoD IS WINNING POINT LEAD ON YOU WHY ARE YOU NOT TAKING THEIR STUFF? All you ever do is trade keeps and towers with HoD for a bit while they’re doing the actual heavy-lifting attacks on heavily-defended fortifications, then crumple into a little ball the second the Henge you ignored decides that you’re a juicier target than the SBI that owns nearly nothing.
And tonight, I deliberately told my guys to cut you a break. We had one of our commanders in Redbriar wiping out the HoD defenses that you had failed for 3 straight days to touch. We HELPED YOU get back your border tower. We want you in the fight to put the hurt on Henge, seriously. What do you do with that chance we intentionally gave you? You mobbed Ascension Bay, mobbed Godslore, then tried to mob Woodhaven…all while Henge was taking forever capturing our Garrison then failing to push any further. That was a free assault on Greenlake. That was a guaranteed hold of Greenwater. That was all the time in the world to be attacking Askalion and taking the map’s orb.
Quit being blinded by your blood feud and play the 3-way to your advantage. Taking our stuff when Henge is still leading is the definition of self-destructive, and it’s no surprise to me at this point that we are leading you by almost the same margin Henge is leading us.
As someone who has deliberately run a WvW only character from 2-44, and counting, the repair bill is indeed too high. While it is true that if you’re getting some kills and completing events you turn a profit, but if you add in any of the things that help your team win other than straight kills, you are well into the negative. Want to have siege for that tower assault? Better think real hard about that, because otherwise you won’t be able to afford your trait book at 40. I often do suicidal actions like push into an enemy line to draw fire and remove the AoE wall of death, and I get severely punished for helping my team win a fight. Either lower the costs, remove damage entirely (running time back to the fight alone is a penalty), or perhaps change how many defeats kt takes to incur damage.
I agree that there should be some sort of forced respawn or a screen-blackening because this is a VERY common tactic of a lot of the enemies we face. Not that it does them any good half the time, but it’s annoying seeing some person deliberately remaining dead near your supply camp and there’s not a thing you can do about it except hope they get bored or impatient.
Coldviper, we did that to Henge with you guys not even two nights ago. Sure, we ended up taking Dreaming Bay because we fought both you and Henge off of it, but we noticed that you were pummeling the south door and getting in more often than not (them crossed swords!), and decided that before you took it we were going to and started our own assault.
What you’re saying is that taking advantage of strategic opportunities (one of the enemy teams ISN’T attacking us, and the other enemy team is defending them) is tantamount to an alliance. In other words we all need to be dumb non-generals that mob anything in sight. Excuse me while I laugh at how ridiculous that is and go about my merry way helping my server seize on opportunities given to us.
@draculthemad
You apparently only queue for one map: EB. On every other map the dynamic is far different. On SBI Borderlands it’s JQ+HoD vs. SBI more often than not, on JQ Borderlands I’ve heard it’s JQ+SBI vs. HoD. On HoD Borderlands I’m fairly sure it’s JQ+SBI vs. HoD. If you’re getting 2v1 pelted in EB it’s very likely because you are a far easier target than either HoD or SBI to each other.
I’ve also seen the dynamic swap several times on SBI Borderlands itself. Last night it started JQ+HoD vs. SBI to devastating effect (SBI owned nothing), turned into HoD+SBI vs. JQ, then JQ+SBI vs. HoD, then JQ vs. HoD with SBI just defending their own stuff, then HoD+JQ vs. SBI once more. All over the course of about 5, maybe 6 hours. Pay more attention to what’s going on instead of hatching conspiracy theories and screaming that the enemy teams must be colluding because you’re losing stuff. And if you want to call fullkitten on me noting the changes in 2v1 focus on my own borderlands last night, I’m that map’s primetime leader. I know what I’m talking about.
dracul, I don’t know what you’re smoking, but when I loaded into SBI’s Borderlands tonight JQ and HoD were wiping us off the map. Granted, we took half of it back over the course of the night, but it was almost hilarious to see how hellbent JQ was to attack SBI while HoD was wiping the floor with them in the south. I will admit that JQ figured it out and struck back at HoD later, but they made the same mistake later in the night by all-in zerging the garrison, then all-in defending it while HoD was getting free reign to push the south. PLEASE lose the chip on your shoulder and play smart. Hearing all of the complaining makes me wish you dropped to #4 so we can face ET, people who actually are good sportsmen about WvW.
I was also on for the first 9 hours of this latest “HoD vs SB” vs JQ match-up. As someone who was actually there, and who makes this judgement in the context of all of the above mentioned experience, I can say without a doubt that SB and HoD did in fact prioritize JQ, and pass up combat opportunities between themselves in instances where doing so served the purpose of ensuring JQ was neutralized/opposed.
Actually, last night in red borderlands (SBI’s), we let JQ have free reign of the map except on our stuff, allowing them to put ludicrous pressure on HoD. Sure we came out on top due to better play, but the “alliance” was certainly more of a JQ+SBI vs. HoD one than SB+HoD vs. JQ. Between the two of us, HoD had no territory for about 30 minutes, and only supply camps for an hour after that.
Last night I ran across several bugs around the orb of power and the altar of power, which boiled down to losing the orb despite no enemy force ever attacking the holding keep, then being unable to regain it when it was stolen from the top of the map. The below has been bug-reported, but I want people to be aware of them. I will not post the exploitable issue I found about orbs though, I will be emailing that.
Altar of Power is dropped by quaggan storm and cannot be repaired
Title is exactly what happened. A lightning storm was active over the garrison that held our orb, and over time its random lightning killed the altar. We got no warning that the altar was taking damage, and when it died since no enemy force had actually pushed into the center to take the garrison we couldn’t repair (at least, I assume that’s why there was no option). Instead of a Repair option the dialog was “Place Orb of Power” even when the orb wasn’t being held. When it was being held, the player would get the same message, but the orb wouldn’t place. Orb reset at 15 minutes despite having never been under true threat by the enemy. The altar should be invulnerable from lightning hits by the storm, and failing that some sort of advance warning that the altar is taking damage so that it can be repaired well before it blows up to random lightning.
One thing about the “anybody can buy it” concern: every commander icon also has the player name of the commander when you mouse over it. Like “Commander Tacktix.” Those who are known by the map and trusted will be followed. Any has-too-much-money kiddie will find out that only a few mindless zombies will follow him instead of paying attention to those who are trusted.
I’m on SBI, and OP is hogwash. Please, don’t accuse us of alliance when we would rather 2v1 the crap out of Henge purely to toss them down a few pegs. If you were showing yourselves as easy targets though, any server population in their right mind is going to go for the free points. Last night we noticed that JQ was pounding Henge at Dreaming Bay and ignoring us, so we showed up to pound Dreaming Bay down ourselves and took it from you both in a 1v2 by using extreme positional advantage.
