I do 20/30/20/0/0 I don’t really focus too much on buffing the flanking strike rather buffing my ability to annoy people with the #2 skill and stealth.

P/P is pretty useless compared to shortbow, however P/D is quite useful in dungeons when you are just fighting one mob and in WvW when you need to kill a guild claimer with the invincible buff on them. The #2 skill can easily stack 25 invuln which is quite useful but overall I feel like shortbow is just a lot better.

I personally would like a monk type class. The primary weapons would be glove type things of some sort, like brass nuckles or some sort of martial arts type glove. They would have high defense medium attack and lots of knockbacks/knockdowns. Like a guardian with more damage and a little less defense that can deal cc to enemy instead of giving buffs and supporting allies.

First of all, if you are so rich because of the money being so easy to make, then the cost of the waypoint is insignificant to you. It isn’t a good money sink because in fact, you are rich. It would have to cost several gold to travel for it to be an effective money sink.

If, on the other hand, you are someone who finds the cost of using waypoints inhibiting playing with folks in lower areas because you aren’t rich and the cost therefore is not justifiable, then it still isn’t a good money sink because, heck, you just avoid using a waypoint.

The effectiveness of a money sink has nothing to do with making people poor. It’s sole purpose is to remove money from circulation (this is one of the main reasons commander title is 100g). It doesn’t matter how rich you are, it just matters how much money there is. The percentage of it’s cost to total economy size is what determines it’s effectiveness, not the person it’s effecting.

When you start out at lvl 80 I found it hard to manage, now it’s just a joke. You said the purpose of it was to make farming stuff less valuable, as that may be true it isn’t the main reason. The waypoints serve as a “gold sink” which is a bit hard to explain, but it’s for the better of the economy.

I personally would love to be able to have a strong WvW build and a strong PvE build and I would like to change between those easy. However, I can’t do this without spending double the effort into getting my gear which honestly is a disappointment. This game is based around easy customization into new types of build, that’s why traits and skills are so easy to change. However I do believe it shouldn’t be completely effortless to have multiple builds.

So to solve this issue I purpose a change to the Transmutation Tablets. Normally when you use a tablet 2 items, the stats of one item get overwritten. I purpose that instead of having them be overwritten they are simply put into a stats bank. So say I decide to mix a berserkers and a carion instead of having one go away and keeping one I would get one stat set and the other would be inactive. When out of combat I could click on my item or something and switch to the different stat set.

Honestly what do you want that dictates “good lore” This is a fantasy game, no where does it say “all Asurans in guild wars 2 will act like x y z and all x and y will have attributes q r e.” The lore is changing, so what whoooopdey doo. Honestly it seems you want a flat and unchanging lore which leads to a pretty boring story.

I am still gathering information about the “Golem Airship event raining presents”. I am assuming, from my current intel, its an animation effect that will cause the Major Lag on that day, however fully knowing that Arenanet is watching this thread very closely and watching my every move.

One could say they might remove that animation to prevent the said Lag that I have predicted, or ignore me all together and include it anyways.

However since its not on my list, that I posted, I will still need 3-4 days to finish gathering my information before, deciding what to do with it.

Also… why is an Asuran making Toys? Usually Asuras are all witty and snotty about being smart and a superior race, yet its making toys? Which lore wise, would be toys suited for a complex Asura child to play with. No other race would understand the toys Tixx would make.

This right here, is called racism. Just because Asurans are smart doesn’t mean this one can’t be nice. And since when do you have to understand something to like it. No one understood inception but everyone liked it.

I personally found that running 20/30/20/0/0 seems to give me nice defense, all the benefits of the cs tree that I want and all the benefits from the power tree that are useful to me.

I prefer S/D but I keep a pistol with me whenever I go if I feel like S/P would work better for a certain boss. The main reason I use S/D is because of the boon remove and I like to run CoE where Subject Alpha is best dealt with if you can constantly dodge (using flanking strike)

Venom Thief Build (PvE, Dungeons) - Advice?

I used to run a might venom build but stopped since the venoms were really buggy and I found that I prefer other utility spells. I like haste + singet that gives power + the one that gives precision + thieves guild. I find you can get quite a bit of might (around 12 stacks) on your own, but really it’s just more worth it to trait to other things. However, I also like to play WvW and kill a single target as fast as possible. This is probably a better overall build for PvE

If you are running d/d or d/p or d/anything then you probably want to stay pretty much a glass cannon since you have stealth as your survival mechanic. If you want to be tanky so you can fight in the zerg, no build will really make you very useful, you need to just fight on the edges of the zerg and pick off stragglers. We have no 1200 range weapon so we are pretty much screwed in those long range zerg fights.
If you want a tankier build I suggest valkryie and going s/d with flanking strike/auto atacks being your main damage output.

Power Vs Precision

What do you guys prefer? A prec heavy build or power heavy.

I use 2225 ish power 1733 precision and 101% bonus crit damage, with 1231 vit and 1116 tough. However, power + prec and maybe crit dmg will go up a bit as I get ascended gear and finish replacing my pants and shoes with the CoE gear.

Is the mystic spike skin supposed to glow red? It’s the same color as the CoE dagger and all the other mystic weapons glow blue in contrast to their CoE red glowing counterparts.

Flanking Strikes
But my build is focused around killing stragglers in WvW and is absolutely pathetic in dungeons.
Power/Prec/Crit Dmg armor + weapons
Power/Vitality/Crit Dmg trinkets

I however am thinking about re-traiting to 20/30/20

Check out the blog. They are not the same stats. There is a 8% increase in stats, per item.

No…… Legendaries will have the same amount of power as Ascended.

Because it doesn’t give me joy winning in WvW just because my server has the higher numbers, there is no skill involved and it doesn’t mather how good you play, the more numerous faction is always gonna win. So there is no point in dooing WvW.

Skill number 3 would need a massive nerf. Burning is about comparable to 8 stacks of bleed in terms of damage.

The numbers are all relative, it is clear that they need balance changes but it’s hard for me to say since I can’t actually test it out.

How much damage is #4 going to do exactly? What kinds of criticals are we looking at here?

The damage numbers I wrote down weren’t actual numbers I suggest. I just put them there to show contrast between the different skills and because I don’t think they are too outlandish. The max damage skill 4 should do is 2000 if you have all initiative available. This is before applying the crit so skill 4 will end up dealing 4000 damage with base crit damage which is 5 times the amount of damage as the first skill.

I like all of them except explosive shot, we already have horrible synergized weapons, last thing we need is another weapon set where only 1 ability is designed for condition builds.
I suggest having Snipe be the stealth attack.
I also suggest have “Take Aim”, renamed to “Environmental Refuge” just be an toggle that drains init while it is active. That roots the thief for the duration, with the increased damage taken, that allows the thief to use the stealth attack but not actually stealth the thief. But have snipe be the only stealth attack that actually costs init

Haha yeah… I kind of put skill 3 in there because the set was focused around crit damage and there was no condition in there. Possibly have skill 1 inflict burning, bleeding, or poison on every attack? I thought of a better way to do this.
I also like the toggle idea but not sure how well it would work with it draining init since the Snipe ability is based around using all initiative to unload a really powerful shot.

I personally think this would fit very well with the assassin archetype plus it would be nice to have something with 1200 range on a thief. Main issue I see is that it doesn’t really fit well with the whole initiative thing.

I made a sample skill set, it probably has some balance problems but you get the idea. Numbers on damage is just to show contrast between skill damage. Usage time means how much time the skill takes to use. Note the numbers are all relative and are my best shot at balance, they clearly aren’t well balanced but are solely there for comparison. Having good numbers without being able to test it is hard.

Feel free to suggest your own skills/skillset, if I like it I’ll add it to the OP and make a list out of them.

Skill 1: Fire!
Range: 900
Usage Time: .5 Seconds
Initiative: 0
Damage: 800
Hit your target with a rifle shot.

Skill 2: Mark Your Target
Range: 900
Usage time: .75 seconds
Initiative: 6
Fire a shot applying 5 stacks of vulnerability and weakness for 7 seconds.

Skill 3: Explosive Shot
Range: 900
Damage: 1200
Usage time: .5 seconds
Initative: 4
Fire an explosive shot applying burning for 8 seconds

Skill 4: Snipe
Range: 1200
Damage: 1200/1600/2000
Usage time: 2 Seconds
Initiative: 4/8/12
Use up all available initiative and deal heavy damage according to the number of initiative used. Guarantees a critical hit.

Skill 5: Take Aim

Binding roots hold you for the entire duration of the skill. All skills gain a 300 range bonus and inflict bleeding on every attack. You also take 30% increased damage and gaine 5 stacks of might for 3 seconds.

General Questions

I have been playing the thief for a short time now, and taking a break from my Guardian. I have to say, that this class is fun to play, and a change in play style to say the least.

I had some general questions that i was hoping i could get answers to.
1. For the trait that gives 100% Crit while in stealth, does that include shadowstep? I guess the questions should read: is Shadow Step considered a stealth?

2. Has anyone tried using Dagger/Dagger and Dagger/Pistol? I ask this because the short bow is annoying me, and the dual pistols are lackluster. I tried this setup, and i have backstab up on both weapon sets, and i am able to keep the bleed from D/D and shadow step from D/P. It dishes out tons of damage, but you lose the SB aoe damage and movement. Just curious if there is something i am missing, and should be doing something else.

3. I am a bit confused on stealth. It seems like the only time i have access to it, is when i heal myself, use the D/D ability, or use the AOE ability that stealths you and your team. What am i missing here? I see, or have seen, thieves who stealth all the time, come out, go back in, and i have searched the builds and have been unable to find anything that grants that much stealth.

4. Toughness or Vitality? Which is a better mitigation of damage. On the Guardian i use toughness, but i have seen some comments on these boards referring to vitality.

Thanks for your time, and assisting me with these questions. I normally see nothing but complaints from other classes all over this thread, but i am hoping to have some thieves help me out without trolling from the haters.

3. Dagger offhand final skill is a 3 second stealth. There are also a total of 4 utility skills that give stealth, shadow refuge for a very long time.
4. Vitality. Toughness is for characters who plan to be take a lot of damage over time. Vitality is better at mitigating bursts and as a thief you should just be fighting in bursts.

1. Make it so venoms only go away only when you land a hit on an enemy. It’s really annoying to miss an auto attack and have the venom removed….
2. Flanking strike: Needs a better lock on for moving targets.

Best used in WvW gank squads, I can kill just about everything in a second or less. Grab the quickness utility skill and the one that adds 15% damage for the next 5 attacks. If you want a more PvE oriented build, I suggest you look at s/p.

I don’t play much SPvP so my build looks a bit different cause of the jewelry/armor/weapon stats. The sigils and runes are what I use though.

Commander Status in WvWvW: A new way to attain it

No, commander title is a good money sink and like you said all it is is a title. It’s entire point is to make it easier to get people to follow you. No where does it say “this guy is a good strategist” it just says “I spent 100g and want to command” It’s fine as is.

You shouldn’t try to go Toughness + Healing with S/D. It’s a weapon set that excels best with Precision + Stealth specialization. This creates a glass-cannon stealth Thief with a constant output of Dazes and superior mobility (via Infiltrator’s Strike).

Against a single target:

  • Infiltrator’s Strike > Cloak & Dagger > Tactical Strike > Auto-attacks.

Against two are three targets (like an enemy reviving a downed enemy):

  • Dancing Dagger x 3 + Auto-attacks.

Remember, in PvP a Thief depends heavily on Stealth and DPS to avoid damage. It’s hard to hit something you cannot see, and a panicked enemy is more likely to reach for his heals and escape skills rather than attack you (which your Dazes will interrupt).

Thanks for the reply Iohanna, but this IS what I have been doing. The Stealth talent line IS the Toughness / Healing line by the way. The issue I have seems to be that I don’t do enough damage to kill the target before I get 2 shot (everywhere), my blind / daze / immobilize / cripple never seems to land (in pvp / wvw), my stealth seems to constantly fail / be ignored (everywhere) and I am wearing paper for armor.

Now I say everywhere, but I’m ok when fighting 1 mob and only one mob. Unless I am in a under 40 zone I can usually take out 2-5 mobs without too much trouble. In zones 40+ I get smoked if I get 2 mobs on me. I just cannot seem to put out the damage required to kill them and I dont have the durability to tank them. No im not standing still. Yes I circle strafe and dodge. I have tried a Power and Stealth build, I have tried a power, precision build, as I think about it, i have tried every 2 line combo except power and trickery.
None seem to give me a good balance of damage and durability with the S/D… well, no durability at all even with 30 points Stealth (Toughness / healing) with a full Toughness gear set… im still wearing wet paper. : /

If you can’t kill 2-4 targets insanely fast with this build you are REALLY doing something wrong. The damage coming off of dancing dagger (the 4th skill) is insane and one of the best kiters in the game. Also, shortbow is much better as an aoe weapon. I personally use shortbow and s/d since shortbow is long range aoe and s/d is close range single to 4 target burst.

Since people seem to be upset that guilds can swap to winning servers weekly why not just make it 8 days? I also don’t see how swapping to the winning server is a problem, they don’t get any benefits and there is nothing wrong with changing servers.
