In terms of farming stuff, the new maps certainly achieve that purpose.

In terms of story, well…I can only speak for myself but I find the story to be all over the place, lacking, and pretty neglectful. I still hold the belief that Anet should have had an epilogue for HoT’s unanswered/hanging stories before jumping into LWS3 but they didn’t do that so for those of us still waiting on everything being answered from HoT are likely to be disappointed. Of the episodes released, only two of them managed to catch my interest at all but that was because they actually resolved some things left over from HoT.

Your mileage may vary, of course.

(Note; the following is opinion and speculation based on information that is likely a year or more old. It is entirely possible that Arenanet has made changes to their policies since that time.)
I think it was early 2016 when there was a thread that showed up on Reddit posted by a user who spent some time (months) TRYING to get banned for verbal abuse. What he reported on his actions and the amount of time it went on was really sad. Eventually a dev made a comment attempting to reason away the problem, and promised that the people in charge of going over reports would be talked to.
Among the statements by Anet in the thread, it’s clear that, at least at that time, that what constitutes “verbal abuse” is not governed by any set rule, but instead completely up to the individual reading the abuse reports. Thus, if someone is reported for telling a player to take their own life, and the person reading the report thinks it’s funny, they have the ability to just mark it as “reviewed” and move on.
Much as I clash swords with them here, I think Anet should experiment for a bit and unleash the forum mods on the game.

If they put the forum mods in charge of game bans, GW2 would be wasteland within hours.

I, for one, would welcome our new wasteland overlords.

Can’t stand Lake Doric, the hearts take forever, the events and achievements suck, I hate white mantle, the “AFK” farmers occasionally chime in with obnoxious comments if you’re trying to get groups for events.

Sadly Bitterfrost Frontier is plagued with the same thing. Good luck getting help with map completion for it because everyone in map chat will tell you or imply “cheekily” how much you suck.

All it does is remind me of how awful the community is and why I have map chat turned off now.

Waste to have too many character slots?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: TheOrlyFactor.8341

TheOrlyFactor.8341

I have 27 character slots. Of those slots, 15 are used. Of those 15 I have 13 Asura and 2 Humans.

Of those 15, I have 4 I consider my “main characters” in that they’re fully Ascended so they’re prepped for just about any form of PvE content though most of what I do is open world PvE as I don’t have anyone to do more organized group content like dungeons, fractals, and raids with.

Right now I’m trying to get 100% map completion for core Tyria, HoT, and LWS3 maps with my second Human character since my first Human character is the only one with that honor. I’ll keep plugging away at it until I either get it done or get burned out and decide to take a break.

Once my 4 main characters get 100% core Tyria, HoT, and LWS3 map completion I’ll make another one of my characters fully Ascended and repeat the process until they’re all Ascended and have 100% map completion.

Then after that I’ll probably make another character. Probably another Asura or Human. Depends on where the story I have for them goes whether or not another Asura or Human is needed. :o

This is my main objection to Taimi. She’s a child super-genius who can solve everything with magitech, with no need for any adult Asura to get involved in the process! Wisdom and experience – what are those?

Seriously, on multiple occasions now she’s built a machine intended to have extremely significant world-wide dragon-hindering effects, all by herself. Shouldn’t some experienced adult Asura get involved before she flips the on switch?

That would be great except that the only adult Asura that I feel like would have a chance of talking some sense into Taimi or guide her better is Zojja and so far Anet doesn’t exactly seem keen on bringing her back. :x

Remove the meters and learn to play well without its crutches and you remove a source of hostility.

I wouldn’t be so certain about that, sadly. Some people will look for any reason to be hostile to other people and taking away meters would give some people reason to be hostile still or even more than they already were. Essentially nobody wins.

Honestly the best thing to do with regards to dealing with hostility is to block the people who are hostile to you and move on.

Mounts [merged]

Posted by: TheOrlyFactor.8341

TheOrlyFactor.8341

Am I the only one that finds the possible addition of mounts to be concerning? (Okay, this is probably a rhetorical question.) I feel like homogenization is going to be the thing that kills GW2 by trying to appeal to players of other MMO’s. By trying to appeal to everyone you attract few to no people.

I mean, if I want mounts (I don’t) I’ll go play WoW or BDO. If I want open world PvP (I don’t) I’ll play LOTRO. There’s already a market for those things.

It’s why, for example, games trying to capitalize on the Call of Duty craze/demographic don’t do well or fail when they try to copy CoD and/or appeal to the people who play CoD. There’s already a game/series that does that. It’s called CoD and they’re going to go to that and stay with it rather than try something that’s trying to steal CoD’s thunder. :\

I think it already has. There was plenty of backlash over the lack of a “proper epilogue” to Heart of Thorns (something comparable to the party in Fort Trinity), mind you this kind of got drowned out by the backlash of the lack of overall content, but if they do that again

There wasn’t so much of a backlash over Season 2’s massively cliffhanger ending (though there was some), but I have seen some annoyance over not “getting the full story” when they bought Heart of Thorns (some of this is towards Season 1 being MIA, but some is also towards Season 2 being the first half of the Mordremoth arc that is bought separate while the Zhaitan arc is bundled in).

Yeah, I’m one of those people who wanted (and still wants) a proper epilogue for HoT or at the very least handle those unresolved stories in Current Events. I felt like they did a great job with Caladbolg and Trahearne and the Pale Tree in the past Current Event. They could do the same with Rytlock, Nightmare Court, and Zojja, just to name a few.

However, it feels like most everything has been tossed into a black hole in favor of shiny new plots. I don’t know about anyone else but I’m quickly reaching my breaking point with regards to them not completing the stories they started.

Will we ever going to see Gear Progression?

in Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns

Posted by: TheOrlyFactor.8341

TheOrlyFactor.8341

So much of traditional MMO combat is rote and repetitive. You execute the same strategy over and over again, just augmented over time with better and better gear. After a while it starts to feel like you’re playing a spreadsheet.

What I find funny about this quote (and correct me if I’m wrong about this or anything else in my post) is that metabuilds kind of fall into this trap anyway. Less about the metabuilds themselves and more about gear gestapos who demand that you play a certain meta for certain content or GTFO.

LFG kind of alleviates this if you can find a group who isn’t insistent on you running a metabuild but it still gives me the impression that this flies right in the face of the “play what you wanna play” mantra GW2 had before.

Then again, in retrospect and in my opinion, it’s not a problem created by Anet but the community.

Human gods and human characters [spoilers]

in Living World

Posted by: TheOrlyFactor.8341

TheOrlyFactor.8341

If Jesus or Buddah were in my way and it was a situation that called for me killing to achieve the safety of the world I would obviously do it. I am an atheist but I have to imagine a religious person would come to the same conclusion. Or maybe not, religion is pretty irrational. The logical choice would be to save the world.

You’re operating on a personal bias though. That’s not a fault, mind you. However, it doesn’t excuse a lack of empathy for the other side who do feel conflicted with this. I imagine a lot of religious folks would be conflicted if, in fact, Jesus or Buddah operated in the manner of which you speak, just like Kasmeer was when she saw Balthazar reveal himself and act the way he did. Crisis of faith is a real thing. The loss or losing of it and the grief that stems from such a feeling is as real a feeling as losing a loved one and the grief associated with that event.

The other problem with that is that in reality their (Jesus and Buddah) teachings don’t, in fact, operate like that. You can’t really compare Jesus’s and Buddah’s teachings of peace with someone like Balthazar who is anything but peaceful.

Additionally – and going post-modern here so I’m probably going to lose people here – rationality and irrationality are not just subjective but man-made concepts, just like religion and even atheism (it could even be argued that atheism itself is a religion but that’s an entire topic for another day). At the end of the day all we’re doing is making up crap as we go along and by sheer luck it manages to be somewhat comprehensible enough to get us through life.

Granted, this is all my own opinion and bias as well based on my experiences and education. I guess the short version of what I’m trying to say is that you can’t assume how a person will act based on your own beliefs. You gotta try to empathize, put yourself in their position.

EDIT: Also Buddah wasn’t/isn’t a god. I keep forgetting that. Thanks ArchonWing. :P

..and this is the point where I stop playing. When game developers include their godless and god-hating ideology in the game and expect me to be a good lemming and play along I’m just gonna say no thanks. I understand most players would kill their own mother if the ingame quest awarded thirty pieces of silver, but to me role-playing is important in a role-playing game and no I’m not going to roleplay killing Balthazar and helping Asuras. For those who don’t know, Asura is a demon in Hindu mythology and their traits are “power” and “arrogance”, much like the Asuras in GW2.

And no you can’t have my stuff I’ll offer that to one of the gods.

1) I would say that this would be their ideology if we were going after all six Gods like that and/or if all of the Gods were acting in such a manner. I’m not convinced (yet) there’s even such an agenda.

2) It’s totally possible to role play your character without them being a part of the story. I just play through the story in order to stay caught up with what’s going on. I don’t play any of my (15) characters as being the Pact Commander. They have their own plot/story going on away from the main one.

3) My (13) Asura characters actually follow both the Eternal Alchemy (or some variation of it) and at least one of the Human gods. Sure, some of them are arrogant and that’s a constant character flaw they continue to address and some of them are power hungry but, again, they realize this as a flaw and work on it. Generalizing all Asura like that is just as bad as generalizing that Anet has some god-hating agenda afoot.

Not that anything I say on the matter will change minds. I don’t expect it to. However, what I am saying is that you’re not bound to play and operate within the sandbox Anet has laid out if it displeases you that much. I sure as heck don’t especially considering how they tell their stories. <_<

Hate this argument because i know a lot of players like me that have a job, a wife AND kids, and still can raid normally.
If you have time to play the game you have time to raid, stop blamming your job/family as the reason you cant raid.

Those kids and wife (or husband) deserve better then.

Well, I must say that I am impressed that people still love to use ad homimem attacks when they don’t have a good counter argument in response to his point that people with family are capable of juggling/making time for raids. It’s kinda like being back in school again with kids that are incapable of debating.

If you’re willing to forsake your own family to play a video game then that’s a problem.

If pointing out problems makes me guilty of an ad hominem attack then consider me guilty as charged. At least I’m not forsaking my family and friends for virtual items in a video game.

So why did "Lazarus" help us protect Aurene?

He didn’t expect the Commander to be a completely insane idiot.

There’s a fine line between genius and insanity and the Commander is doing a fine job blurring that line.

We haven’t heard from Zojja since the HoT expansion.

We may not be seeing Zojja join DW since she is currently in Vegetable state as revealed in Episode 2 saying her brain is “Scrambled” and she done nothing but “Drooling” in her bed while recovering.

In this state it is most likely she is gone for good and we most likely will only see her once in a while in a wheelchair as a brain damaged cripple.

The problem with this though is that 1) it was in Episode 1 of Living World Season 3, and that 2) it’s hearsay. The same goes for whatever Rytlock said about Logan and Zojja in Episode 1. Until the PC actually SEES what’s going on with her like we did Logan, we don’t and won’t know what condition she really is in. For all we know she could just be chilling out in a hospital bed reading get well cards and munching on sweets.

There’s also the fact that, depending on who you rescued first in the Bitter Harvest chapter of HoT, the conditions are variable. Rescue one first, the other is worse off. Even Anet hasn’t come out and said which of these is canon, which leads to just even more speculation.

Heck, I’m not picky about how they resolve this and other unanswered questions so long as Anet does it. They did a great job when it came to the last Current Event regarding Caladbolg, Trahearne, and the Pale Tree. They could do the same thing without fitting it into a Living Story update. They could just as easily have a Current Event where the PC checks on Zojja, finds out what’s wrong (if anything), does a quest to help her out, and bam! Update done, everyone’s happy.

I’m going to echo/paraphrase what Chadramar said in that eventually the momentum runs out and people will just end up not caring even when things do get resolved because it feels sloppy/like a farce. This, in my opinion, hurts player retention for Anet.

Granted, I’m biased because I don’t care for how Anet tells their stories in this manner. As a result, I’m taking a long break from the game, at least until there’s another Current Event or Living World update. Even then it’s becoming harder and harder for me to stay engaged because they jump around with their story.

I’ll admit it again: I don’t like how Anet handles their story telling. Maybe at the end of the day this game isn’t (meant) for me despite being a player since April 2014.

However, I -want- to stay engaged. It’s just hard for me to stay engaged when Anet tells their stories the way that they do and especially when it involves leaving my favorite character(s) hanging in some unresolved state.
