Why is armor design so poor in this game?

Ticky.5831

You’re complaining about overdesign, and then you post Final Fantasy Armors?

Wha????

I’d say that FF armors, although heavily stylized and detailed, at the very least look “cool” and achieve their intended purpose. Go look at Dragoon’s armor and tell me how elements contradict its intent or look like a parody. That’s the difference between, say, dragoon and gw2’s bladed. The former is over-stylized but cool- The later is an unintended parody.

I always figured the bladed armor wasn’t designed as a set so much as individual pieces for mixing in with other gear. But really don’t see a dramatic difference in relative aesthetics or practicality between Dragoon and Carapace armor, for example, And the female Winged armor is pretty ridiculous in any situation other than on a Runway.

I’m VERY confident if I looked hard enough, I could find something even more ridiculous than the bladed armors in FF14.

I’m saying that because I’m a longtime fan of the series and I know full well the absurdity SE is capable of.

Yes.

There is new story, but it’s all paygated behind LWS2 and HoT

There are fractals at level 80. Mini dungeons with its own gear progression(agony resistance)

The level 80 zones are good for getting gold.

All the expansion material(including raids) is post-80 content.

I really wonder whether people take MMOs too seriously.
Nothing is real, not the gold the weapons the skins nothing.
When you leave the game you cant take it with you.
Having a gazillion gold means nothing.
No one cares.

Studies have shown that the brain doesn’t differentiate dopamine responses from virtual or physical goods/achievements.

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Ticky.5831

I have never followed meta, meta sux, and most of the time meta is full zerk, but that makes you weak and you die alot.

When I make a build, I usualy try to get as much power as possible while trying to maximize vitality w/o too many percision losses, and I prefer to use wepons and skills that give you survivabilty options over dmg, that makes you very sustainable ehile dealing enough dmg that you outdmg other zerk builders that are constantly dead

Meta builds don’t make you die a lot. A lack of skill playing with zerker builds makes you die a lot.

More often than not, it’s lack of experience rather than skill. Nobody knows a fight beforehand. Which is why people chafe against the meta. You send out the message “you are a bad player if you don’t use the meta”. Nobody wants to think of themselves as a bad player, so they cave into the pressure of only using the meta, and then they become a liability.

If you are running pure zerk when learning a fight, you are a liability. And if you are a liability, you are a manifesting yourself as a bad player, regardless of you “skill”. Plain and simple.

After you master the fight. THEN go full zerk.

is toughness gear really worth using?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Ticky.5831

To them I’ll say this: any where, where damage is so high that passive damage mitigation might be interesting, toughness will do diddly squat for your survival.

Wyverns. Multiple Mordrem snipers. Multiple anything with immobilize.

Toughness will at best give you 1 extra hit you can take,

Yep. In the first two situations you face damage fields that will 2 shot you without toughness or vit. That means if they overlap fields you will get killed. With toughness that means you’ll survive.

And this is especially true against Legendary Wyverns, where DPS isn’t the primary concern.

Against multiple enemies with immobilize, you either have to sacrifice DPS for multiple condi cleanse skills or eat all their immo attacks and then cleanse, which is where toughness or vit helps.

A drought does not mean a complete absence, but rather an insufficiency. I live in an area that has been in its worst drought in over a thousand years, but we still get rain.

I do not think that the existence of raids means that there is not a content drought.

Well, raids are pretty much the only thing MMOs(in general) are expected to come out with between expansions.

So by the general standards, either it’s not a content drought, or MMOs in general are in a constant state of content drought.

More above in a late edit. Sorry.

I also believe you are incorrect, or if you are correct they had changed their minds regarding the HoT open world content at some point; as they did increase the difficulty to it in response to the feedback from the beta(IIRC; 1st weekend was super hard, second weekend was super-nerfed, 3rd weekend was in between but closer to 1st then 2nd, and then they nerfed it slightly at release, and then nerfed some hero points after release).

Even the group that wanted challenging group content only got it after the expansion technically. Yes it was probably, actually definitely, in development in tandem with the expansion.

They also got it with the increased difficulty of the HoT zones.

WvW borderlands… that it is now being scrapped entirely, while being one of the major advertised features.

As of the quarterly update announcement last week, there is very little reason to suspect it’s being scrapped entirely. They are going to gateher feedback on it after the update, so it’s extremely likely that it’s coming back at some point after the Alpine map is re-released. Unless new information came out since then.

Probably easier to find 10 players for that than the actual raids.

SAB temporary content - sincere question

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Ticky.5831

Ticky.5831

I think people need to qualify what they count as “content”.

  • Some people want more maps to explore.
  • Some people want to advance their character and have their exp go to something — they are largely waiting for more masteries.
  • Some people want challenges to beat and achievements to score — hopefully, the third raid wing will make them happy.
  • Some people want more story — they are waiting for LS3.
  • Some people want shinies to achieve and show off — they were waiting for the new legendaries and want them to be released without the collections — perhaps as rare drops.
  • Some people want more collections, with or without the shinies at the end.
  • Some people want to play WvW — they are waiting for that to be fixed.
  • Some people want sPvP tournaments — they are waiting for MMR matchmaking to be fixed.

As for SAB (the original topic), a lot of people (including me) are sick of it already.

Agreed. People only seem to talk about what they don’t want, rather than explain what they do want.

I think that’s largely why the expansion turned out the way it did. The people who wanted challenging group content were more specific in what they wanted than the majority of the people who are now complaining that they didn’t get what they wanted.

And I’m saying the game is crammed with content right now. Which is where your argument falls apart.

Is it really, there is very little content that retains its value after you are done leveling your first character.

Now that they have map rewards, most of the level 80 zones have value. You just have to keep an eye on what they are for the week.

If the expansion was a full-bodied 50$ worth of content expansion there wouldn’t be a content drought in the first place…

That is completely untrue. No MMO company has ever been able to produce content as fast or faster than the majority of people can consume it.

Whether you feel that you got $50 worth of content is a different consideration than if the amount of content that is released has any potential to cover the periods in time during which new content is being created.

~EW

Of course there will always eventually be a content drought, but I assume the point was that kitten expansion shouldn’t have reached that point so quickly.

Honestly there isn’t even a content drought. Raids are still being released regularly. It may not be the content everyone is interested in, but it’s content.

Lol, got to love this reasoning. I can see a restaurant arguing like tihs on the phone when someone orders a steak:
“Yeah, hello, I know you ordered a steak. Steak is out, but we have a large stock of fish we want to sell to you. What, you don´t want fish, even after I have offered it to you a second time and you won´t order again in our restaurant? I wonder why…”^^

That analogy is awful, and the conclusion the hypothetical customer came to is extremely unreasonable.

It’s more like people are drawing the conclusion that the fish isn’t food, because they want steak.

The only unreasonable thing I see in my anology is that the customer is still on the phone after he is asking for steak and gets offered fish for a second time, especially when the restaurant was known for being the only steakhouse in town for years.^^

Why is the customer on the phone unless it’s a high quality restaurant where they need a reservation?

The higher the rating, generally, the more power the chef has, and the less stable the menu is. That’s why they hand write menus at high-end restaurants. Because they change often, based on what the chef is cooking that night.

Why would he expect the restaurant to have a stable menu? Why are they concluding they’ll never eat at the restaurant just for acting like a highly rated restaurant?

If it’s not a high quality restaurant, what is the purpose of the phone call? Why would they be asking for steak unless they suspect a supply issue? If they suspect a supply issue, why would they conclude to never eat at the restaurant?

And also, there is no especially about this: your analogy didn’t say anything about a steakhouse.

So as you can hopefully see, it’s unreasonable to hold a restaurant responsible for issues with their suppliers.

If you want to see entertaining examples of why this is unreasonable; See “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia: The Gang Spies like the US” were this kind of response is mocked as absurdly stupid, or the movie “Chef” for why it’s unreasonable to expect a stable menu at a gourmet restaurant.

Unfortunately, however awful this analogy is, and unreasonable the customer is; I guess I’m not surprised. It’s my experience from working in the food industry that diners turn off all rational thinking when they enter a restaurant. I’m not surprised that for some people, it takes place at the first interaction with a restaurant.

The fact that the only content getting released is a content that a large part of the game population didn’t ever want to see in this game makes the whole situation even worse.

I don’t know how many people were opposed to the presence of raids, but I think you’re vastly underestimating the number of people who quit over the years of a lack of challenging endgame content, combined with the number of long-suffering fans who stuck with the game until it finally came out.

This also seems to be assuming no major new mechanics, like gliding. Masteries were, like specializations, built with growth in mind, so I expect to see similar things from those, but gliding was a pretty major feature. I use it more than anything else from HoT, including specializations, even in Central Tyria.

I don’t know what the next “gliding” will be, or whether there will be something comparable, but it was a revolutionary feature in my book.

Your placeholder expansion is also missing story length. Is it as long as HoT? Shorter? Longer? I know that’s a key feature for a lot of people, myself included.

Yeah sorry, edited in the story length. I agree about gliding but I didn’t put “new feature like gliding” in under assumptions because I thinks it’s too abstract and makes for prejudicial expectations; people who liked gliding are going to pre-judge it as being as good as gliding and vice-versa, without any concrete info.

So, another expansion is on the way. That’s going to happen. Heart of Thorns was divsive at best. The largest criticism being content-light for the price point, and now, the assumption that Anet won’t deliver advertised content.

I think it’s safe to say nobody wants a disappointment.

So, based on the following assumptions:

4 PvE Zones, 1+ collection per map

Personal Story mode of the same length as HoT

1 WvW map(it seems a safe assumption that they are now planning to rotate the WvW maps rather than remove them entirely)

2 New Guild Halls

9 New Elite Specs

1 new PvP map. I’m not really adequately qualified to make any assumptions about PvP, because I’ve honestly only played it once back within the first year. But so honestly this is an arbitrary standard just for the purpose of a basis for discussion

Mastery progression roughly equal to the effort of leveling a character to 80

1 Raid wing within 6 months

Retention of good faith on advertised features: although that doesn’t seem likely, it should go without saying that people will be disappointed in the product if Anet breaks their good faith on features

And assuming the following exclusions:

No new classes

No new Legendaries

I am going to give Arenanet the benefit of the doubt that, now let’s exclude price point at the moment, Heart of Thorns was as much content as they could handle in the timeframe of the expansions development. I honestly DO feel they worked as hard on the content we got, and they didn’t waste time making it. I was personally satisfied with the individual pieces of content we got(not speaking of the amount, just each piece as individual piece, and full disclosure, no I’m not a primary PVP/WvWer).

So based on these assumptions, plus whatever PvP content you explicitly state(since like I said, I’m really clueless about) what would you pay for this amount of content?

Level doesn’t affect what’s in the containers that say they are affected by magic-find. So there is no point sending those to a lower level character.

The ones that don’t say they are affected by magic find are the same as before. You get loot leveled to those characters.

I beg to differ, that is exactly the point. The LEVEL of items differs and thus the salvaged mats. For the ones of us working on making ascended gear, it’s the only way to get linen, cotton, wool, leather etc.

To answer the OP: no, didn’t chage. Regular bags – low level, rare gear bags lvl 80 ( for ectos)

Unless you are suggesting the magic-find bags(wyvern, mushroom, chak caches) are affected by character level you aren’t differing.

What I know is, you don’t understand that Legendary development is causing the content drought that you think Legendary weapons are necessary to fill. You’re just grasping at any straw at this point to justify keeping Legendary development; even the ones that go against your position.

A content drought caused by 6 people being “missing” out of a 120-dev live game team? That’s quite a stretch.

If anything is low impact, it’s augmenting a 120-strong team with an extra 6 people.

Really? 5% Isn’t a big deal to you? I guess the difference between a few legendaries shouldn’t either.

If you add 5% manpower to a year’s worth of work, you end up with that job being done about 2.5 weeks faster. I don’t consider that to be a big deal.

Comparatively, taking 6 people away from a 6 person dev team…well, that’s as a high negative impact as you can possibly have without destroying work already done.

I would rather they release content they can actually deliver 2.5 weeks faster than content they can’t deliver at all.

I’d frankly they’d rather not deliver any more “content” than cease development on an advertised feature.

Granted, I want them to deliver more content. But I’ve been playing very regularly the last year and a half, and on-and of since the beginning previously, and I know for a fact I can open my achievements tab and find stuff to do and can probably keep doing that at least until the end of the year.

And when I run of content, I’d be willing to wait. I’d also log in daily, and before this fiasco, keep an eye on the gem store. Now I’d just log in daily.

Doormat isn’t an insult. Psychiatrists will even use the term as a short-hand for some who neglects their own needs because of passivity(and who suffers for it). I’m trying to help the people I’m calling doormats. Its unhealthy for them to act like that. I’d know because I used to be one until I learned assertiveness skills, in group therapy ran by psychologists who used that term. When I call someone a doormat, I’m not attacking them.

I don’t believe I ever used the term “white knight”. I think it’s a stupid term, clearly used by people when they aren’t articulate or resourceful enough to dismantle an argument(or alternatively, when they are extremely frustrated), just to irrationally demonize someone in a desperate ad-hominem attack.

You said you’re sure about it. I quoted you.

Just because you can’t control something, doesn’t mean you have no influence over it. People can influence this.

Has there been any mention of any kind of compensation for those who bought HOT? Like some gems or anything?

Why would there be any compensation?

Asked and answered. no point in retreading old ground.

I also bought the expansion and have an issue or 2 but MO has told us what they plan on doing and I’m sure that with time the new legionaries will come again once they have sorted other bugs and content out.

What makes you so sure about that?

Please make SAB available more frequently

For all those wanting it to be permanent, three words: Super Mario World.
Same game, except you can play it forever, you get a camera that is not drunk, and you get a jump mechanic that is slick rather than clunky.

Regardless of that, given that it looked like SAB was never ever coming back maybe you should just be happy that it is now an annual festival. Festivals are always welcome – they bring a bit of variety. It would not feel so special if it was permanent and I suspect that it would quickly become stale, because there is not really that much gameplay in there.

Most folk will not get all the skins this time around. That means they have something to do the next time around, and something to look forward to….

The game really isn’t very much like Super Mario(and I think you got the wrong Mario anyway as World is 2D and doesn’t have a camera). It’s like a 3D Clash at Demonhead, which really isn’t available anywhere else.

That said, I’m already tired of it and I don’t why people choose to keep grinding at it after boredom and instead wait for it to come back next year.

You should get bows from your story rewards.

will start story, haven’t yet. when’s a good lvl to start it, or does it not matter?

It starts at 10 and then unlocks a new chapter every 10th level.

. I just don’t have the audacity to eat a whole buffet and ask for a refund because they didn’t deliver chocolate ice cream that day.

Sounds like your problem. You should work on that, it’ll take you further. Don’t take out your weakness on other people.

Right … making a mistake, recognizing a bad business decision and stopping low-value development now equates to immaturity.

The bad business decision was taking people’s money and then deciding not to give them what they paid for. Whether or not it’s immature is irrelevant; it most certainly is unethical.

Do you not agree? Will you give them money in the future, knowing that you might not get what you paid for?

I don’t see how it’s unethical at all and I don’t agree. Anet intended to deliver that content and even attempted to do so in good faith. It’s just not working out for them. Anyone complaining about this is very shortsighted and appears clueless about business decisions.

Well, I really don’t care about what you think about me, as you’ve shown yourself a very poor judge of character.

I mean, do all the years and hours you’ve enjoyed the game up until that theoretical point account for nothing?

Some emotional attachment one might have for the account VS some kind of financial return on your investment?

If it’s purely a money thing, something or nothing is still an easy choice to make and were I to feel so strongly about the issue as some seem too, it makes a point to the company.

How long something has been owned and someone feeling that they had “gotten their money’s worth out of it” don’t really matter. It is paid for, owned, and should not have to be given up. Especially not when the item at issue is only a smaller, separately sold, portion of that whole.

The problem isn’t with the customer not wanting to make some self-damaging noble sacrifice to prove a point to the company, it’s with the company failing to offer a reasonable option for compensation.

I don’t find any of this particularly noble.

It certainly isn’t self-damaging to the vast majority of people who have been with the game pre-HoT and invested hundreds or thousands of hours into the game.

$50 well spent.

If one is so very bitter and hung up over the recent decision to put a hold on new legendary weapons for the sake of the game as a whole, you can ultimately end your customer relationship with Anet and pocket the $$$ spent on HoT.

I don’t feel that way myself. I’m willing to see where this goes. Bitter and empty the words of some of the more excitable lot here, most of them are not going to get a refund.

They’re going to wait and see what happens. I think that’s the best course. You don’t have to agree with me to be counted with me in that regard.

Seemed to me more people were going with the boycotting the next expansion and the gem store route.

I’ve not actually tried raiding in exotics (or at all) but everything else

I think the raid encounters are designed around the gear base of all exotics, with ascended Amulet and Accessories(not rings).

I just did on Saturday with a character with only one ascended piece(dagger) and the rest exotic, but I know some of the group had full ascended.
