FACEPALM.
I got a few gemms left after last trade (before the patch) and now there’s no way to spend them. Thank you Arena Net – this is the biggest fail of yours ever.
I dont think ANet will remove their new exchange system neither will decrease the gemm price.
Happy Halloween everyone
Check Dev Tracker – it’s getting a “custom” amount option sometime as soon as they can get it out.
I’m not sure that the gem price spike is anything particularly suspicious. It underwent a similar spike back during the 2nd Anniversary sale, and reached similar peaks. This time around, ANet has announced:
1. Chance to get the super rare (and expensive) 2012 Halloween skins again. You can get Foil Wrappers from ToT bags, but if you really, REALLY want to pad your chances, buying Foil Candy in bulk from the gem store is the way to go.
2. New Noble Count outfit, which is almost universally loved, plus the old outfits are back. There is usually a surge of returning players during festivals, who may only now be seeing the Mad King/Witch/Executioner etc. outfits and thus are only buying now.
3. Lovestruck/Fused etc. weapons have been announced to be retiring soon. This may cause a surge in people buying gems for a last chance to gamble for scraps/tickets before they disappear.
Taken altogether, it’s logical that demand for gems would be up.
EDIT: Although, I just checked gw2tp, and wow, it actually shot up to 20g! That IS pretty remarkable, and could indeed be attributed to the currency exchange change.
And people trying to sneak in before it exploded upwards.
Those customers who have not played in a while and come to speak their opinions about why they aren’t coming back are probably ones that Anet should be closely listening to: especially as more and more customers are falling into this category.
If Anet were to ban anyone from posting, it would be better to ban those who defend Anet no matter what actions Anet takes. It’s (ironically) these people who hurt the game far more than those the OP wants to ban.
Right, so you have a list there of people who do that? Even Vayne isn’t that way.
I mean, I can illustrate it right now:
We had to make our point clear with a 1000+ post and countless locked threads and negative PR on various gaming websites that would scare away any potential consumers in the feature while damaging the image of the company.
It’s go loud or go home I guess. If that’s what it takes then that’s what it takes.
. . . any major changes your developers make to the game from now on? Expect to do it under siege.
But you say it as if it’s the players fault rather than ANet’s astounding lack of communication during the spring and summer of 2014.
It’s a little of column A, a little of column B, and a little of column C. It’s the astounding lack of good communication, sure, we can both agree that didn’t help much. But you think the players don’t have some fault at all? That they don’t hold any responsibility for their behavior? I don’t agree with that – there is nothing to totally absolve people of the behavior where they shoot the messengers rather than raging over the message. (Which has happened . . .)
And then there’s column C – which is basic psychology. Reinforcing a behavior by responding to it. This is why I am just thinking it’s a smarter idea to just walk away from the game before it becomes more common . . . “SAB or Riot” wasn’t all that long ago, and I really don’t feel it’s all that out of the question to expect similar things now that players here have been conditioned.
Basically? I’ve said it before, and I continue to say it. Just because you:
- Don’t like a policy.
- Don’t care for what you heard.
- Want something different than what was offered.
None of that gives you a right to get nasty. Not just protesting . . . which isn’t so much the issue . . . but being abusive, dismissive, and treating staff like garbage. They’re people, so you talk to them as people. Calm, reasonable, and trying to curb your passions before you hit “post”. Do all the threads and posts you like. But do them with some minimal respect for the other person . . . even if you don’t respect what they have to say.
The forum will be so much nicer for it.
To be honest, as a GW"1" player, I feel bad for Gaile. She seems to be forced in the position of a talking head. She is better than that…
Agreed. I wish it wasn’t Gaile who said what was said.
Yep, tossed under the bus.
That is the unfortunate job of the person who has to talk to the public with bad news or things they won’t like hearing.
You are aware that they are a business right? I just want to make sure you know that.
Oh, I know they’re a business. Thanks for informing me of that (with links!). Now, shall I be clear what I mean? Let’s see, shall we . . . twice now we’ve had a case where the forum turned itself upside down, along with Reddit and elsewhere, until someone blinked. The Commander tags thing was easy, and simple, and it could almost be argued to have been a setup so we had the illusion we could change the course of events.
Now it’s worked with this, which is also a rather subdued change overall – just add a “custom” place. Simple enough change on the user-end and maybe even possibly one on the coding end.
So, what do you think will happen if their next big announcement isn’t liked by the forums? I predict we’ll see this all over again.
Correct me if I’m wrong but I believe the consumer base will approve of changes made with utmost integrity. Actually now that I think of it I don’t ever recall a consumer backfire on any design that was made for the sake of the consumer pool when it is executed properly.
How about we try that?
I know its an outlandish concept for a lot of people but I honest to the six believe it is a working design!
“You’re wrong. You know how you can tell? I just corrected you.” (Thank you Rube, go back to the Waffle House now.)
See, I’ve been through more than a few games, and some fandoms, and changes made with “utmost integrity”? Yeah, sometimes they’re received just as hostile as changes made for the sake of the money.
Heck, why don’t you take a look over at Mojang and Notch, and basically how he claims to have received death threats over “a game”. If half of what I saw people say on Minecraft related forums . . .
No. I expect, no matter what, if a change is made and enough people decide they don’t like it? Torches and pitchforks, tar and feathers, and endless topic creations everywhere thinking it will work.
Who am I kidding, it probably will work.
You are aware that they are a business right? I just want to make sure you know that.

Yeah, a monetization CDI probably isn’t going to happen . . . and if it does, it’s not going to be useful because of how charged the atmosphere is around it.
Hopefully it will be with the Grove changed over from Mordremoth’s attack, Rata Sum being exploded in a puff of mad science (taking the SAB with it for good measure), and charr fighting off Branded as Kralk takes the center stage with Mordremoth destroyed.
And, if there’s any justice, it’s another Enemy Mine situation with Palawa Joko needing to take down Kralkatorrik before the dragon Brands the Awakened away from his control, in return for getting the heck out of Istan.
Given they don’t want to swing Ye Olde Krytan Banhammer unless it’s warranted (fraud, hacking, theft…) I think bans are less likely than just letting the system as in place now do the work and not complicate things.
I mean, I can illustrate it right now:
We had to make our point clear with a 1000+ post and countless locked threads and negative PR on various gaming websites that would scare away any potential consumers in the feature while damaging the image of the company.

Thank you, Gaile, for an official response here on the forums.
Absolutely!
I’m sorry we weren’t able to answer earlier, but it took a bit of time to research how best to address player concerns. I’m glad that this is going to be resolved in a way that will give players a great deal of flexibility, customization, personalization, the whole lot.
I was just thrilled when the devs said the custom option could be done. I think my “Yaaaay!” was heard in downtown Seattle.
From appearances, the best way to address player concerns would be to do absolutely everything the forum ever asks to be instituted (especially if they contradict) and apologize for inconveniences with a free precursor. Oh, and killing Trahearne, Kasmeer, and Marjory in one scene where they have no other function.
On a slightly more serious note – why in the heck wasn’t there a custom option somewhere in there in the first place?
Better question: Do you realize now there’s a trend where if people don’t like something, we will now see countless rage threads/stories all over the internet until it’s changed? Because that’s now twice it’s “worked” . . .
Of course people have had issue with that as well, i think this is just a sum reaction to all the unwanted changes and the purported reasoning behind them. I don’t think treating your player base like they are imbeciles helped them at all and the complete lack of real communication for a very long time just added to the vitriol. There’s an old saying, don’t kitten on my cupcake and call it frosting, and that’s exactly what happened yesterday with this change, so hence the reaction.
Oh? I can’t remember pages upon pages of raging about the fact that you can’t spend exactly what you want or get the exact amount of gems you want with real money. But I suppose I might have missed it.
Because using your credit card to buy is not the same as converting gold or jewels.
That sort of logic is a big mistake. The moment gold can be used to obtain something you can get with real money, those systems are linked in real ways with real ramifications. The design of each considers the other.
It’s going off topic but, heck, that’s not a problem with all the other stuff going on in this thread.
The design does, necessarily, consider the other. Furthermore, it’s an idle mental calculation of “is it worth my time to farm Gold for the Gems or is it just better to earmark $20 for it?” which players run if they decide to buy Gems.
Strangely, there are many issues about using Gold for this which has led to the insane farming techniques (and the likewise insane defenses of such) rather than just saving some real money or deciding to give that cool stuff a pass now and waiting for it to come back.
The thing is, spending $20 on Gems (I believe it’s 1600) is probably more advantageous to do than spending your time farming, then paying Gold for it. Or, if your aim is in the other direction, taking your $20 and shortcutting your time to get there. I’d say there’s honestly very little in the Gem Store worth $20/month in Gem Purchases via cards but that’s because I see the cosmetic outfits or the musical toys and such and go “oh, neat, but I’ll pass”. I realize I’m probably the only person doing that.
Regardless of that, using roughly 4 hours of your average minimum wage job a month for Gems . . . versus twice that (or more) farming is one of those measurements bound to be different for everyone. But, I’d say it’s not as big a deal if you want it badly enough to consider spending the time farming rather than doing something more fun.
Oh, and yes, I still think this change wasn’t done well and is missing the crucial “set custom amount” option which would have avoided almost this entire mess.
Here I was wondering if it was a use for Lost Heirlooms.
This company has fallen so far since Guild Wars Prophecies. It’s indescribably sad.
Was this the same company who felt it necessary to nerf several almost harmless farms in the Crystal Desert? The same one which had the Favor of the Gods exist only so long as your region could keep winning in the Hall of Heroes, otherwise you needed scrolls to access Underworld/Fissure of Woe? The same one which had refund points early on until they disappeared, preventing you from really experimenting within a class/subclass structure unless you devoted a lot of grind time to leveling?
It amazes me how people forget about that sort of thing.
edit 5:
Lemark was in high spirits, it had been a productive week. After a series of failures his luck had turned. He stared at his own reflection in the item, such a trivial thing by itself, but with many, there was power. Zomorros knew it as well, Lemark had seen the desire in his eyes before, this was one of his favorites.Clearly we’re on the right track as “spirits” refers to “ghost” and “productive” to “money” which a doubloon is . . . so it has to be part of this!
You know, i think there is no deeper meaning to it. It’s just storytelling. After a productive week Lemark had gotten his hands on the trivial, shiny things which zommoros likes which are supposedly mystic coins or crystals. No need to interpret every single word.
Of course not, I’m being silly and my sarcasm is acting overtime again. I need my meds, quick, someone get me some candy corn.
Do people really think that abusing the company and more specifically their employees will help?
Haven’t you noticed, it’s the only way for them to acknowledge the playerbase’s concerns.
Well, apparently support tickets by new players saying the currency converter is confusing seems to grab their attention too.
And here is what I was afraid of with them continually responding to outcries the most and people feeling okay to throw tantrums rather than hold discussions. This sentiment, right here, that the only way to get an answer is to threaten, belittle, and in general make a scene.
Welp, I now know what I must do to get my asura-firing trebuchet.
Excuse for new player (you take months old players for new player it seems but whatever) is just a lie. If a player couldn’t make the old gem store work, it means he couldn’t even power on his computer, and less use it, or use a mouse or a keyboard. He couldn’t even eat or drink alone.
There are parents to do that.
Proposition: Tickets are coming in by children who got GW2 as a gift and have a problem with basic math.
[/harshmode]
You mean like they cannot multiply? For example they have 100 times 9 and it equals 733?
Oh I know you’re not serious with this but . . . I am sorry to say this is sort of the case and I’ve seen it just asking them what five times twenty-five is. They reach for their cellphones to calculate it.
Ask them what five quarters is though, they’ll immediately tell me it’s a buck twenty-five.
Yes. People are that stupid, please do not doubt two things:
- The resourcefulness and conviction of people who want something bad enough.
- Human stupidity.

I’m with you with the love for Anet and “our” game. Do you really think this was a good move for their business? Just look at all the rage, not only here but in countless other fan-forums too. They won’t make money that way, they will lose customers.
I think the change itself is rather good, but they need to fix the amounts and potentially also add the ability to add custom numbers. But the thinking behind the change as such is good in my eyes.
The thing about this situation is that it will rage like mad for a couple of days and then it will blow over, just like all the other times.
Your shilling is noted.
Yes, like going back to the old system isn’t, in essence, almost exactly what he suggested.
Another free suggestion for a revision? You want to buy something but are X Gems short? Have it calculated to give you exactly the amount of Gems you need so you don’t wind up with leftovers.
Yes, even for real money.
Yes this means probably charges for odd amounts like $11.76 US.
Curious…where are all of the people that blindly defend the questional decisions and direction of this game? Even they must be like “Wow…can’t really defend it here..”
They are here:
Jeezus even Vayne doesnt like it.
I’m almost giggling.
. . . I really rankle at the reputation being saddled on the guy. He’s spoken out of a few things (most recently being how Traits are handled) but it gets buried, and forgotten, under how everyone remembers him for defending everything and anything blindly. Not to mention it’s rarely blindly. He does try out things before he passes judgement when it’s possible.
Also, I think people are back to over-thinking it, or chasing red herrings from overly literal interpretations.
Maybe, but we’ve got nothing better to do, and it’s fun
Well, you have fun with that. I’m back to calculating aerodynamics of a heavily armored asura with a greatsword and twenty pounds of explosives strapped to his back.
. . . better recalculate for thirty.
Also, I think people are back to over-thinking it, or chasing red herrings from overly literal interpretations.
“the sealed, cylindrical case”
You know… this really feel like he is talking about a black lion chest. Well, for me every hint lead me to this item at least. (merchant, large city with water, sealed, and very common object)Edit : I checked black lion chest can’t be used on the forge sorry for the bother
Edit 2 : On the other hand, basic salvage kit and crude salvage kit can now be used in the mystic forge
. . . the shape of a Black Lion Chest isn’t cylindrical.
The people who really do blindly agree with everything don’t post here anymore. And they certainly would steer clear of this topic
Why funny? These people clearly have a passion for the game or they wouldn’t even bother. I think it’s kind of sad… they want the game to go in a good direction and may even want to give anet money, which is why they stick around despite what are arguably terrible changes.
But that is just the thing. They aren’t sticking around. They are coming back as soon as there is a new big thing to hate. When there are no new things to hate on they are very quiet and you more or less never see them post anything at all. But as soon as something controversial turns up they start posting like mad.
Threads like these give players who quit a feeling of solidarity and a platform to voice their concerns which they feel are not being acknowledged.
All fine and good, except more than a few basically agree they left and aren’t coming back, so . . . why bother caring about solidarity or their concerns? They’ve admittedly already left and uninstalled. It’s not about whether or not they have a point, it’s about whether or not they show up just to stir up the pot for their own amusement.
I can confirm!! She does drop from normal ToT bags. Took me 4500+, but she dropped! Thanks everyone who helped!
. . . what?
Muddy waters of the bay, which suggests it’s bordering the ocean. Lion’s Arch is probably what’s meant, but hmm.
Worth noting the case in question was not what he was working to steal but seems to suggest a map or scroll case. And is important enough to make sure he didn’t drop it. It might be what was purchased the first time . . .
And “sensitive about their heritage” seems strange if it’s Lion’s Arch – there’s not a singular heritage to that place these days.
A little to . . . everyday? Spoons, huh? Or is it more exotic and is a FORK?
Well if it is Lion’s Arch, he could be running from the Tengu that are near the Shuttered Gate.
He stole the missing spoon from the collection: Tengu Spoon. (Looks like a spork.)
3.5-4 Story continues:
(2 days later)
Lemark sprinted down the alleyway, an endeavor likely to leave one examining refuse closer than generally preferable, but this wasn’t his first time. He slowed for a moment to glance behind him, merchants still chasing with guards closely behind them. He was surprised they hadn’t given up, they must be very sensitive about their heritage here, the item itself was a bit too everyday to inspire this kind of rage. “Two more blocks”, he thought to himself, double-checking the sealed, cylindrical case he carried. His attempted thievery had failed, for today, but he wasn’t going to lose what he had to the muddy waters of the bay.

And, I’m now going to start a bet how long before people remember things cost . . . mostly, multiples of 100 or 50 on the Gem Store.
Which always made me wonder why people would buy odd numbers and then be unable to use them.
5 Foil wrapped candies: 118 gems.
Bank access: 35 gems.
Total makeover kit: 350 gems.
Riding Broom: 250 gems
5 Magic find booster: 550 gems
5 transmutation charges: 270 gems
Various finishers: 500-650 gemsPurchasable amounts of gems: 800, 1600, 2800…
Tell me how those numbers on top can divide evenly into the numbers on the bottom. (okay, sure, bank access goes evenly into the biggest one… so I should have to spend $35 in real money to get an evenly divisible costing amount of bank access express items?)
. . . really? I already clarified what I said and you’re choosing to try again at the whole “hard” thing? I used the word “mostly”, edited it in specifically because of thinking about it.
Forget it. I’m out of here before someone thinks I was defending this idea.
(I’m not, it’s still clunky as hell just like everywhere else which uses it from MS points to Wii Points to mobile gaming premium currency purchases. I just stopped and thought about it long and hard, realizing I hadn’t bought gems in any other increment than 50s and/or 100s . . .)
And, I’m now going to start a bet how long before people remember things cost . . . mostly, multiples of 100 or 50 on the Gem Store.
Which always made me wonder why people would buy odd numbers and then be unable to use them.
When they have sales, it’s not unusual for the sales price to be an odd number. So there’s tons of people out there with a strange amount of gems. I currently have 181 gems, and there is no way for me to buy 19 gems to even it out.
It’s why I said “mostly”, and my brain kicked me in the hands before I hit post to remind me of that detail. Mostly because I have an odd number of gems myself . . . and no idea how.
Hey, I got a suggestion.
If you bring back being able to buy Gems singly or in bulk with Gold, allow us to buy them singly or in bulk with cash too! It’s totally perfect and there’s no way anyone could dislike it.
And, I’m now going to start a bet how long before people remember things cost . . . mostly, multiples of 100 or 50 on the Gem Store.
Which always made me wonder why people would buy odd numbers and then be unable to use them.
I wish Anet would hire someone like WoodenPotatoes. He knows his lore and is always offering some amazing ideas and suggestions for areas of improvement.
Speculates too much and I find his conclusions often questionable as a good continuation of a story. But yes, do consider hiring him. Then we can have people complain about him selling out.
If there’s not an asura-firing catapult designed for, I mean, by Councilor Phlunt . . . there is no justice.
I want trebuchet launched Asuran Special Forces so bad…..
Chris
Maybe if we wish really hard, Toymaker Tixx can set something up.
If there’s not an asura-firing catapult designed for, I mean, by Councilor Phlunt . . . there is no justice.
Why should any player have to wait to finish their completion? Your argument holds no common sense. In fact, it sounds like you support the backwards thinking which led to many players getting frustrated to the point of quitting on their goal to attain a Legendary.
Wait . . .
It’s against common sense to go “oh well, it’s not going to happen right now, I’ll come back for it”? And it’s better common sense to begin demanding a game conform to a person’s individual interests instead of others’ interests?
That’s it, I quit. I’m going to go be a hermit in the ruined Hall of Monuments and proclaim myself King of the Eye of the North.
See, I did WvW forays just to explore and tag Points of Interest or Vistas every week. Check it on Friday at reset and see which color came up. Then if I needed anything? Go run and get it.
Otherwise, it was . . . late night skulking about. It’s surprisingly easy to get things done late NA nighttime
Oh, lord, now we hear from the Krait Komponent?
Pffft on “upstanding citizens!”
Well, half right. They may be citizens, but no legs means no standing.
I think you’ll like the new rewards. Granted, I’m more than a little obsessed with Halloween in general, but the goodies look pretty sweet to me!
Are we talking about rewards for the clock tower, or overall?
Because I still haven’t been able to do the Clock Tower.

I say we build it where the old Black Lion building used to be, and set it up to be a place you can read not just these “books” but others of importance too which are little more than text transcriptions.
. . . everything except for the secret recipe to Rata Sum Pie.
I just am going to advocate patience, and working on the other parts while you wait for WvW to cycle around again. After all, why gnaw your fingers to the bone over waiting for WvW Completion when there’s so many other problems ahead.
Like Ye Olde RNG Toilet for precursors, the insane requirements for the Gifts . . .
Actually, closer to turkey . . .
I had a conversation for over thirty minutes over how Evon Gnashblade is to blame for Zhaitan taking over Orr. And if we’d voted for him LA would have been worse off. All in good fun, honestly.
Another time, we began discussing the aerodynamics of asura and skritt strapped to black powder charges and their usefulness against Jormag in case of golem failure.
It’s not that hard to get mindless topics rolling in map chat with enough people playing along.
That’s a notable shout-out / reference to a stage production. It’s obvious which
I do know tonics take a slot out of a chest in dungeons . . . but haven’t noticed the spoon for Tequatl being a problem. More like an extra item, from what I recall.
I’m still waiting on the stupid WvW and Fractal spoons.
That’s a shame if so.
I would have really liked to know how their studio is split up. Oh well.
I’m more interested, truthfully, in what they can talk about as far as future projects. I kinda got off the curiosity over how things are organized watching small indie projects like Terraria and Starbound.
. . . where transparency has proven to be an interesting problem. Especially with the latter.
I’m starting to wonder if this may have a point considering a simple thread asking " how many people are working for arena net , and what s their work (positions)" was shut down just because “needs to be closed”.
. . . I don’t know, did you catch some of the replies before they got pruned? Yeah.
I’m guessing their were more than the ones in there currently?
The ones still there seem fairly subdued.
Yeah, I caught a whiff. Gaile’s post implies she had to bring a hammer down on some others, too. If it’s anything like what I see on Reddit from time to time . . .
Honestly, it shocks me (only a little) how people think they have a right to come on the official forums and backhand developers in absentia to try to score points . . . then complain when they get smacked back. But, this being the internet is why it only shocks me a little.
