Yes or No: Manifesto Represents the Game?

The fact they can’t even bring themselves to defend or explain the change speaks volumes.

I dunno, I sure wouldn’t defend or explain myself in this atmosphere either. Mostly because I know that any word out of my mouth would be carefully examined, and if it contradicted anything I said before then I’d have people calling me a liar. Heck, if I was in their shoes I wouldn’t even go that far. ANYthing they say now is simply going to be labeled as “yet more lies and platitudes meant to soothe us”.

No, I would do what John Romero should have done – keep my mouth shut and make my game.

The forums were soul-destroying before the event, and afterwards it continues to be soul-destroying.

It’s pretty masochistic of me to keep visiting even though I know it is damaging my interest in playing a game I quite enjoy, and killing my faith in humanity as well.

But that’s how I roll.

Like I said elsewhere, if I’m not playing it’s because I feel dirty due to everyone in several places telling me I am an idiot for playing it. That I’m an apologist, a fool for loot, a secret ANet employee (?!?!), or best ever . . . “the reason that this game is doomed to fail”.

(That one was when I was talking about the “culling” taking place during the event and telling someone: “Friend, I deal with this all the time if I’m in a spot where 30+ players are throwing spells and attacks. I can handle it, and still get Gold Reward on the event, so can you.”)

It’s not ANet that’s putting me off the game, or the Ascended Gear or whatever else people are complaining about. It’s the fact the community seems to want me to blindly follow them or else I must be blindly following “lies and hollow promises”. It can’t possibly be that I can have an entertaining time even in a flawed game.

. . . yes with a caveat.

I would refer them only after knowing they had an equal or better computer than I do, and that them and I were going to play together. I would refer them if the technical issues which struck the whole event and the massive ones causing “culling” issues and disconnects were not an issue in the slightest.

Also, I probably wouldn’t take them to those events if I wanted them to actually play the game. I’d be taking them through Kryta/Ascalon so they could see a place they’d probably be spending much of their time to give them a feel for the REST of the game.

You want me to be honest? Then this deserves a more complete question than “yes/no”. I’d have referred them based on Mad King’s Shadow much easier. I’d refer them on the strength of the rest of the game as I would be experiencing with them rather than Lost Shores.

Like I said in another post, If I pass gas and get a couple of droppings in my pants, it is no different than taking a full fledge dump in my pants; I still pooped all over myself.

Yes, it is different. You don’t see a difference but there is a vast difference from “passing gas and a little bit got out” to what I’ll just call “pudding pants” . . . something I had to endure only once and it was not pleasant at all.

They are similar in that there is going to be a certain odor. However, the drycleaner would beg to differ that one is the same as the other. And I don’t care how slick you try to make the comparison, “two plus two” does not equal “five”.

You keep saying 20% but you’re not posting anything to support this. You want justice? I want evidence you’re not just performing a proctologically unwise maneuver to get these numbers.

A new tier of gear won’t break the game.

But power creep might. Gated content might. Gear checks might. Grinding a new dungeon might. Vertical progression doesn’t belong in this game, but it’s not difficult to see why it’s now there.

Nexon bought themselves a seat at NCSoft’s table, whose stock value isn’t doing well, and their shareholders aren’t happy.

That probably will break the game.

Gear checks. Gated content. A lot of people are throwing these words around and I think I want to point this out:

This is not something for ArenaNet to fix. This is for the players to actively discourage rather than buying into. It’s not easy, and you’re going to get flak for it, but why oh why weren’t you telling the people “Full Exotic or GTKO” exactly what you thought of them? Why aren’t you handling groups who go “LF2M, no rangers” as vehemently as you are ArenaNet for “making this happen”?

So far the only thing I’ve heard from people who have gotten higher in Fractals is that the Agony starts but you can evade it. It’s not an instant “you die if you don’t have Agony Resist”. It’s not “If you don’t have 180 Fire Resist then you’re taking damage per tick” . . .

. . . it is not the Demi-fiend of Amala, one of the craziest instances I ever came across of “gear check”. (Oh gods that one was brutal.)

The Goal of this thread is about the Grind.

And my . . . belief, position, what-have-you . . . is that the grind is a self-inflicted pursuit rather than a forced choice. And that the “vast statistical advantage” resulting from the grind is not entirely accurate.

I refer people. They opt not to play because:
- One is/was playing League and was trying to get his ELO over into Silver bracket.
- One plays WoW and has a job as an artist for commission. They do not have the time.
- Another holds a grudge over some game about comic book heroes . . . I dunno, never heard of it.
- Fourth person I could refer who I talk to regularly prefers playing Minecraft.
- Finally, the last person I would refer from the people I know currently, has a pretty bad reaction time and thus would find the game far more frustrating.

Aye did not see that. I guess you can just use a different “Unique” ring with a different name to still get better stats than exotics. The argument however is not the stats. The argument is the concept of Anet vs. Grind. Like I said, if it is even +0.000001% increase in any stat, it’s against Anet’s mission statement.

Hey, NO, no moving the goalposts here. Everyone has been saying the stats are so superior they give an obvious advantage. I wanted to see the math and compare and now that I have a look, I think they actually are more powerful but suffer a bit because they don’t have the concentration of the statistics Exotics have.

This is the crux of the argument and where people are saying there’s an increase. An increase in “any stat”? Look, if the items had two statistics totaling 180 instead of three totaling 170, that’s not “simply an increase”. Do we count Magic Find instead of Precision as an increase? What about if we trade Precision for Critical Damage, or Toughness for Vitality? These ARE in fact sideways improvements . . . you trade something for something else.

The other nestled core of the argument is that you’re not ever allowed to compromise or do something even remotely against something you said. If I said “I will never watch MLP” and then I wind up sitting through an episode while babysitting . . . I compromised my vision from what you are saying, and that’s bad. If I was writing on a novel and said “it’s not my intention to have Susan die” but as I’m writing it seems to spring from the narrative? What do I do then? Start over or sigh and realize my intentions might not be the best thing for the narrative on that point.

(ON THAT POINT. Not generally, not “for every thing, throw out the guidebook and go nuts! Woo!” )

Some notes:
- It’s not 2% Critical Chance, it’s 2% Critical Damage . . . mild difference but given my criticals are around 2500-3000 from my current bow, it doesn’t seem that big a gain.
- +11 Power, dunno what that translates to in raw damage . . .
- -13 Precision, meaning LESS chance of a critical; note that I’ve heard from some stat crunchers that Precision’s affect on Critical Chance diminishes after a point.
- +18 Vitality, which is +180 Health. Nothing much to say here, I’m good . . .

But comparing the two, while there’s definitely a small step up there is definitely a different arrangement of stats. Let’s see another one . . .

I already edit my post before your response. Remember that is only one ring. Assuming all accessory slots had same stats: that’s +55 Power, + 65 Precesion, + 10% to Critical Damage, and +900 health. Ascended gear already has one more stat over Exotic.

Right, apologies.

Interesting question. Does this ring have “Unique” on it? (checks) Yes, it seems so. You can’t use two of the same ring.

And for WvW, well WvW is more about large battles and multiman fights with lowbies and 80s and geared 80s. It’s rare gear ever comes into play and it if does, RNG plays more of a factor.

No, actually tactics/strategy tend to work more than numbers and RNG damage/critical chances. Truth, that the reason certain servers are at the top is not because their gear is at least 20% cooler. They’re there because they get to the battlefields, secure themselves a foothold, and coordinate holding it.

I’m on Stormbluff Isle. A couple really good squads have ventrilo/TS chat rooms going and they organize multi-front offenses and raids on supply groups. They scout, they spot, they do all kinds of things you’d expect actual military engagements to do. They take it seriously enough when they show up that they whip a zerg into a focused force instead of a mindless rush. Sure, the commander is running around with Sunrise out but it makes him extra visible and that becomes a way to tell where he is exactly on the battlefield.

This is one reason WvW engagements get won. Not by raw statistical advantage when comparing one person to their opposing number. Because they behave like a unit, an army, and it freaking works :P

Ruby Orichalcum Ring of the Beserker
+67 Power
+48 Precision
+3% Critical Damage
w/ Exuisite Ruby Jewel
+ 25Power
+ 3 Critical Damage
+ 15 Precision

Total:
+92 Power
+63 Precision
+6% Critical Damage

vs.

Vine of the Pale Tree (Ascended Ring)
+103 Power
+50 Precision
+8% Critical Damage
+18 Vitality
-Unused Defensive Infusion Slot

Posted this on wrong thread. Anyways, I don’t know about you guys but even a +2% Critical Damage and 180 Health is a HUGE increase.

Don’t forget stats like power, crit chance and crit damage have a compounded effect as well. That’s not just +2% crit damage extra because you’re critting more often and it’s scaling up from a higher base damage.

Actually the 2% extra crit damage is not as good as it seems since it will be added to your current stats.

IE I have 56% crit damage on my guardian. 2% more crit damage is literally 1% more damage from crits.

I don’t see extra Critical Chance listed here, Precision actually went down with this comparison.

Besides, the world needs ditch diggers too.

Get to it then, those ditches aren’t digging themselves.

You know, you keep throwing around this word “incompetent” but I don’t really think you understand it. Incompetence would have shown up a lot earlier than now if someone in charge was incompetent. People do make mistakes without being incompetent, that explains how I was born you know. But enough about me.

I apologize, but I don’t follow in this attitude of “if you mess up you must have your career ended”. If someone messes up, and they realize they messed up, I want them to have a chance to figure out a way to make it right. If the waiter brings me the wrong meal I don’t want them fired for it. If I ask for no onions because I don’t like onions, and they forget, I don’t demand the cook be fired. (Note, not the same as allergies, don’t presume I said that. Allergies are more serious and should be treated more seriously.) No in either of those situations I’d just calmly ask them to get it right.

And here’s another thing I can’t agree with you on. Having a difference of opinion, and taking a different path than you would have them take is not a “mistake” in and of itself. I am not going to bother saying this whole content update is or isn’t a mistake . . . only history can call that one properly. But simply disagreeing with you doesn’t make me right, or you wrong. Disagreeing with ArenaNet doesn’t make them wrong. This is not mathematics, where the answer to 2+2 is 4, or chemistry where sodium thrown into water sparks a reaction all the time. This is them saying “we think this would be good for the game we want to make” and you saying “you’re wrong and you deserve to be fired for incompetence”.

I don’t personally like WvWvW. I don’t do WvWvW. I only step into WvWvW if I want to play with a Treb. That’s all I do in WvWvW. I get on a high, hard to jump into spot, lay down a Treb, and slowly build it on the hill. Then I throw cows at people. Happy, diseased, dead cows at people.

It’s fun.

I got to WvWvW for two reasons. First, to get my monthly quota. Secondly, because I want to . . . well, broaden my abilities and knowledge. I want to not be the guy who is useless because he doesn’t understand his class. I want to learn where my build is weak and what I need to look at and focus on fixing.

I want to learn what my class can and cannot do, and test the limits as to what I (the player) can pull off.

. . . and I need to test to see if I can free up enough of my whopping 1.75 GB of RAM to make it easier to play.

Aye, thank you for answering. So from your experience, why does one need ascended gear then? Why do we need +stats and anti-agony?

You “need” anti-agony if only to buffer your survival in case you can’t dodge in time. It’s a safety net, so you can be a little sloppy and not be wrecked.

The stats? I’m not sure. I think the +Stats are there because the Infusions may . . . may . . . be overall weaker than gemstones/runes/crests since the Agony resistance takes the place of a stat.

I do. most games aren’t retired…and if they are too thick headed to listen, then perhaps the game should be closed.

It’s not the developers you have to worry about, it’s the funding behind the developers. Investors can be very fickle these days. It won’t matter if they got the message, if all the negative buzz created scares off the funding. If you hit them in the wallet, the wallet makes the decision, not the head.

Good, then perhaps whoever drove this wrong headed direction will get justifiably fired.

. . . you’re not listening to what I’m saying. There is ZERO guarantee if you go this route, you’ll get anything better than what’s there now. At best, you’re right and . . . what, the game suddenly stops having all this? I told you, it’s not going to be rolled back, the current content is going to stay.

But it’s more likely the person fired is either a volunteer or volunteered to take the fall and business continues as usual.

And there’s a chance as I said . . . you don’t lose only one person. You lose a game. No refund. No return to form. Nothing . . . nothing.

If you do grasp what I’m saying and just don’t care about the potential “collateral damage” of this kind of tactic? I . . . I don’t know what to say to you, I don’t know how to relate to that kind of blind arrogance that the game is better off not existing anymore than to conform to your vision of it.

What is there to fix? That champion was only added to make it harder for people to get their Orichalcum, in order to make progression slower, and increase the grind.

You know, it’s making it harder to get to the only other Rich Orichalcum node in the game. The other is in Eternal Battlegrounds in the jumping puzzle. I will note, you can leave off this one and there are still . . . two? Three? . . . nodes in the area, and the several still on Orr and the two in Frostgorge.

They put the Champion Karka there because, well, they realized there wasn’t any kind of challenge to reach it other than running the distance. I’m not happy about it, either, mostly because there’s exactly zero interest in killing it.

There’s a “rich” Orichalcum in EB puzzle? It falls apart when I hit it three times with my pick.

Maybe its not to late to change it back if they act now, and in doing so they may at least reclaim some credibility back on their original promises.

Problems with that.

1 – If they change it back, they will be seen by yet more people as “not having the integrity to stick to what they wanted to do”. They’re in a “darned if you do/don’t” position right now. They keep it as is? People keep saying it’s clear they don’t care about what we think. They change it back? People use it as evidence they can’t make up their mind.

2 – To a lot of people their credibility is already shot, and nothing short of public executions may satisfy them.

3 – If they were to say “we’re rolling back to before Lost Shores until we look into rebalancing the content” then EVEN MORE people are going to quit because of the progress they lost.

This thing is already out, and flailing about, and if I worked for ArenaNet right now my priority would not be on “fixing” this mess but trying to figure out if they should scrap new plans for content with this kind of reaction the first time they throw new things into the game.

Shame on you for wishing for someone to loose their job in this economy because of your personal “entitlement”.

It’s not just THAT. It’s the fact the fallout can become much worse if the hyperbolic rhetoric around here gets any worse and if people actually review-bomb and inflict damages on sales.

It could just be one person getting fired. (Again, good on you for basically ruining someone’s career; no company is going to really want them after that kind of blemish.) If could be investors deciding a team needs replacing, which isn’t going to change the direction in the way you hope it will.

It could wind up like what happens to other MMOs when they get such a reception . . . an announcement of the servers closing down, and the company doesn’t try it again because they don’t get funding.

It could wind up being a “validation” to some minds who think anything other than the exact formula WoW uses is bound for failure. Barring the intelligent who realize WoW succeeded not based entirely on what its game does, but several other factors combining into it.

I know you’re not happy, I get it. But if you are after improvement and not just a pound of someone’s flesh . . . that is not the method to take. I don’t agree with you people, and I don’t agree with proposed fixes for what I don’t know is broken yet. (Don’t try to convince me, don’t label me an apologist or a fanboy or whatever. I simply DO NOT KNOW and refuse to speculate until I get there myself.)

I am not running around telling people to stop brainstorming “fixes” or to not say their mind with some kind of alternative to “undo it”. I think it’s a good thing people post their ideas here, and that they actually . . . are thinking about the problem rather than just ranting. I may not agree, and I may bring up counterpoints from my perspective . . . but you know, it’s welcome. Opposing viewpoints are good, it fosters thought.

Opposition screaming loudly from the rooftops that someone needs to be lynched doesn’t help anything.

I like many other players who are fuming in the forums, and friends on Ventrilo, do not want to quit the game. We want Anet to fix the current issues. We want Anet to uphold the ToS, their Terms of Speaking; hence, the manifesto. There is already grind issues in the game, those are Legendary Weapons. This issue is still not fixed. To fix it, Anet added more grind, gated communities, LFM certain level (healer/tank alternate), and +stats (and/or infusion) to enjoy game content. The right model is that a person fully geared from a level 35 dungeon can enjoy the same content from a level 80 dungeon. The wrong model is when I can’t enjoy a ‘player’ level 1 dungeon in gear from a level 80 dungeon.

. . . yeah I didn’t go with those groups and seriously I wonder why anyone thinks they’re “in the right” to do that. I suggested four guildmates and I get together and take a stab. We had fun. If I didn’t want to stick my face in the burning which is the crap surrounding Fractals, I’d put together groups for it.

Also, those kinda “LFM” messages kinda always existed here. I’ve seen “LF#M ## Exp, no Rangers” at least once a day.

I agree that the community should stop the hate… erm more like complaining. Maybe expressing ourselves is just way over the top. Maybe GW2 fans should not spam the forums in an attempt to give Anet another chance. Maybe all of us complainers should just go ahead and ask for a refund and never look back at the game.

You can ask for a refund, I’d much rather treat it like you purchased a digital copy off Steam of a game you thought you’d enjoy, didn’t really like so much after 70 hours of messing with it, and never go back. You know, like Oblivion. Great game, but there came a point where you had done everything to do. Game’s over. $60 is spent and gone.

Well assuming you didn’t buy it at one of those infamous “Steam kill-your-wallet-and-melt-your-credit-card” sales.

One of the bigger things for me is the lack of a skill pool, in GW1 we had hundreds of skills to mess around with for each profession, then secondary profs to make it that much more interesting, it let you cater your class to your play style. Frankly it made things interesting just because of stuff you could do with all these different ability’s for example the 55 monk.

The 55 Monk, perma-SF, Ursanway, 3-Hero-easy-mode . . . there are a ton of things which were done with the ability to find skill synergies not anticipated to make the game easier to play. Well, to farm mostly, but “play” in a sense.

You know what I miss from Guild Wars 1? Logging in every major holiday event and having fun. Canthan New Year, with my alliance working to sponsor district(s) from using time during the year to gather ingredients. Wintersday, where the plain silly entered into the game and great fun could be had doing snowball fights.

I miss the sense of accomplishment for doing 80% of the missions alone with H/h because I didn’t want to bother other people with my noobishness. The other 20% I didn’t do alone? Mostly HM missions.

I miss basically managing to take down the Great Destroyer without abusing Pain Inverter or Ursan Blessing. I miss my alliance spending SIX HOURS in Urgoz’s Warren the first time we cleared it because we were too stubborn to quit, then we sat down after and discussed how to clean that up so we could do it in two by the last time we ran it.

I miss green uniques, collecting them. I really wish we could have displayed THOSE in the Hall! They were my trophies of conquest of PvE.

I miss getting into a Jade Quarry match and inspiring a team to turn it around from a 5-0 deficit to a 10-9 win.

I miss motivating a few alliance mates to go kill Rotwing because we all needed that vanquish, and it going much easier than with heroes.

I miss Pyre Fierceshot. I miss Jora. I miss Olias. I miss . . . no, wait, I don’t miss Rurik.

What else don’t I miss?

I don’t miss “Spamadan”, where turning on the trade channel was grounds for never reading anything said to you otherwise, ever.

I don’t miss the complaining about festival hats “looking like crap” every darn year.

I don’t miss the complaining they stopped giving out hats and gave out tokens to claim ones you missed, because there were no new hats.

I don’t miss “Dunes of Despair” HM.

I don’t miss the slightly, just a little bit, buggy Vizunah Square.

I don’t miss knowing that every time I found an item which I thought was kinda cool, someone somewhere was going to be a smartaleck and offer 10g for it because “it’s not Req 9”.

I don’t miss the sinking feeling of thinking “I can afford Obsidian Armor, surely” and checking Ecto prices.

I don’t miss doing Underworld trips and seeing everyone else get a Glob of Ectoplasm and every single freaking drop was a blue Cane for me. (I am dead serious.)

I don’t miss Duncan the Black.

Please make your voice heard. flood all online buying sites with comments and reviews. If you don’t like this patch, say so. If they don’t sell anything over the holidays, someone will get fired and the direction will change.

. . . you know, if the game doesn’t sell, someone may get fired. (By the way, great choice, someone does deserve to lose their career because the Internet has decreed it so.) Or it could be taken as a much more severe problem with the forums busy saying the game is dying and the company is a bunch of lying liars who lie . . . and the game is axed completely.

I am not sure I like the odds here.

If you think this is hostile, I’ve seen worse. The actual official D&D forums were pretty nasty for a time a couple years ago, and there was this one game where the atmosphere was just plain toxic to everyone involved. So bad the server owner decided “why do I keep sticking my hand in the burning?” and decided to start severing ties and stop paying for the hosting. And we’re not getting into on the other shoe how players of M:tG would react to every expansion or odd mechanic ever.

The thing that gets me? In the end this just feeds the corporate perception that we don’t want other games than WoW . . . after all, if the player base gets so violently in an uproar then why support GuildWars 2? It’d be better to go fund something else than what nearly the entire forum is saying is now a failure.

The review bombing, the rampant talk about how the game failed and there’s no trust for the company anymore . . . the venom and sarcasm heaped on what could be frank attempts to talk between working shifts?

Why would ANYONE continue to fund such a thing? Especially if it’s true and there is a downturn in activity and stock prices? We’re starting a self-fulfilling prophecy here, folks. If you repeat something long enough you start making it true.

To be fair, those people DO exist. I once met someone at a gaming convention who had a blast pretty much standing two booths down from Wizards of the Coast stopping people to make up all kinds of things trying to disrupt their business. He moved constantly, so people couldn’t pinpoint him but he was always in the dealer’s room spending ten minutes talking about how D&D 3.5 was a sign of the end times and how the recent release of the Dragonlance Campaign Guide was also a sign the original IP holders had sold out. (Amusingly, Margaret Weis was there.)

On the other hand, I came with a bunch of people who decided it would be hilarious to troll the HECK out of the creator of Cynnabar.

So. Yes, people exist who get dissatisfied and proceed to make attempts to tank a business they don’t like.

Actually, it’s mostly possible to get them if you’re patient since the colors usually cycle through. Stonemist Castle might be a hard road though.

Also, bear in mind, PvP and WvWvW are two different sections of this game The PvP area (Heart of the Mists) has nothing to do with world completion, if I recall.

The point is – It absolutely matters. Anyone who says this gear doesn’t matter is either lying or doesn’t understand. It might only matter a little, but it matters. It may or may not decide the outcome of fights, but it matters.

And if the gear will continue to become inflated in the future, it is going to matter more and more and more.

It matters a varying degree based on a number of factors. Is the armor level below your level? It’s going to be weaker than it actually appears in downscaled areas. The gear tiering generally goes:

- White (Normal); generally easy and cheap to attain. More useful to break down into components with a salvage kit or sell.
- Blue (Fine); after a point these become more common than White, and allow a spread of 2-3 stat boosts suited to various build concepts. You will likely wind up with all-Fine somewhere around 40.
- Green (Masterwork); now gear drops with Runes/Sigils in them and have higher stats by a bit. These make good and serviceable items to use. Also, they almost all are worth at least 1 silver for sale.
- Yellow (Rare); among the best of normal drops, this gear is the highest craftable before rank 400. At 80 they’re valuable since they are a source of Ectoplasm, and are a significant upgrade.
- Gold (Exotic); this is in general the best tier of items which aren’t Ascended. Their stats are very nice, and when dropped in the wild they come with Superior Runes/Sigils which are very important for building armors up. This should be your medium-term goal once you start to get close to 80.
- Pink (Ascended); currently there’s back pieces and rings with more to come as they get it ready. There is a projected 5-8% higher stat threshold over basic Exotics (without counting Upgrades/Infusions) but there are no widespread items to make a distinction yet. This requires doing roughly 2-5 trips through Fractals, and a non-trivial amount of supplies; this is comparable to making a Gift for a Legendary. Speaking of-
- Purple (Legendary); this is the top tier, but each Legendary has a set form with numbers and cannot wildly vary. They have the same statistic level as Ascended (formerly the same as Exotic) so you’re shooting for appearance and prestige.

Everyone with me so far?

For 99% of the game, Ascended is not “required”. That 1% is “Fractal Difficulty 10+” due to Agony. Yes, the stats for the back/rings are potentially better but they are also potentially not quite in tune with your build. You also cannot upgrade them as easily as an Exotic, and an upgraded Exotic will have higher statistics than a basic/naked Ascended as it stands currently.

For the rest of the game, right now as it stands, Ascended gear is similar to how Exotics were useful but not required unless someone wanted to make a deal out of you not having Exotic. You can do passably well in Blue/Green/Yellow gear in PvE and in dungeons it is completely possible to handle them with less than Yellow gear. (I have, for the most part, done so with very limited amounts of dying. I know of at least one person bragging they were doing it with nothing higher than Green and not dying at all within Arah.)

So, if you’re trying to get a soundbite quote out of me:

“Gear matters, but skill also matters. In lots of places skill > gear.”

And it’s worth noting that having full awesome Ascended gear would, perhaps, not even have helped the original poster. The other hidden price of decking yourself out in Exotics is that they are much more expensive to repair, and thus dying becomes more costly . . . and THUS it becomes important for you to brush up your skills so you die less or that you work yourself up some deep pockets of repair funds.

That’s how it was in GW1 and it worked great, you reached max level, max armor, and worked on getting the new skins, or accessories like sun glasses or scarfs.

This reminds me I really need to get back to actually finishing my Vabbian set.

if max stat gear easy to be obtained… so what should i do on my lvl 80 character? I already finish my story, have max stat gear (because easy), complete the map, what next?

it’s kinda boring if just only do PvP/WvW….

  • just ask, no offense

Well, there’s the Explorer achievements (hidden jumping puzzles or events), there’s the heartbreak and toil to chase the Legendary weapon you want the most. (NOT for the faint of heart or light of wallet. . )

Or there’s my personal favorite. Screwing around in lower level zones escorting people through events.

Thank you for expanding on my simplified statement? The point I was making is that regardless of a few folks with “higher stats”, it takes much more than that in order to capture/defend a tower/garrison/keep.

I’ve typed that all out in various formats over several different iterations in the last three days it’s almost reflex :/

They’ve already stated they’re gonna make obtaining Ascended gear possible for WvW… they just haven’t implemented it right away. Chill, I doubt your server will suffer because a handful of people have a piece (or all 3) Ascended items. Pretty sure it still takes a zerg and some siege weapons to take a point (other than supply depots maybe).

Let’s see, six silver for a ram and about 25 people can take a tower almost before a defense can be mustered if this is done off-peak hours. Less if you have truly focused efforts spearing through to the Lord. For keeps and garrisons, this is a lot more complex and requires more since players will likely be on hand to be defending. Zergs don’t do so hot here compared to focused sieges and a pool of around two to three gold can make the difference between “look at the gate inch down!” to “wall is down, move a ram to the inner gate”.

WvW still rests in the hands of those who can pull together four things: manpower, strategy, tactics, and leadership.

Edit: removed an extra word.

You’re absolutely right, we really have no idea what’s going to happen in the future. However, the point is to let the developers know what is and what isn’t acceptable. Sure, it’s ANet’s game but we’re playing and paying for it and I think that we have a right to let the devs know what we’re ok and not ok with.

The point is not “this is (un)acceptable” . . . it’s “I find this (un)palatable”. I concede the point that you, personally, find this highly distasteful. That’s something I cannot/will not attempt to tell you you are wrong in. I will however argue against blanket statements made as though they are the One Truth.

On topic, I already said my piece. Exotic gear is already remarkably easy to come by, compared to others and you can do fairly well with it currently. At this current time, no change is required to how easy it is to obtain. You can either luck out on loot (not recommended to rely on), find yourself a crafter willing to do it for materials and no upcharge (more reliable), or learning the craft yourself and pushing it to 400 (very reliable). Note, all of these methods will have a wildly variant amount of time required to do.

It should be obtainable doing things we enjoy. I hate doing dungeons so I am at a huge disadvantage now in wvwvw.

Hey, if you’re on Stormbluff Island and use Medium Armor or Huntsman weapons? Look me up with the materials and I’ll make you your flipping Exotics.

Tobias Trueflight.8350

No, it’s not. Because WvW is a hell of a lot more complex than you’re boiling it down to (twice now). It’s a number’s game (whose army is bigger) until it becomes a question of who has the better tactics and strategy. Gear shouldn’t enter into it because you can still do good in WvW without actually engaging the other players directly.

See also “night-capping” and/or “rush for the tick”.

And your math may be flawless but mathematics is only good for modeling behavior, it cannot accurately describe an outcome based on odds. 15 people with a 20% stat bonus do not automatically become an effective 18 people. They are 15 individuals with individual force multipliers, but they do not have three more bodies. There are still 15 targets, and a force facing them which is capable of meeting them, say, at a 1:2.5 ratio will probably beat them. NOBODY fights at a 1:1 ratio in WvW, that’s not the goal. The goal is to capture, outmaneuver, outplay.

Ignoring the issue is not going to make it go away. Especially when future game content is bound to be balanced around these elitists with their ascended gear.

Like I said before, we’re only at the beginning and it’s easy to ignore 3 slots right now. However, when people are running around with full ascended sets and weapons and all dungeons are designed with some cheap gating mechanics, like this agony thing, then it’ll be too late to say anything. I’ve seen it before.

I’ve seen it before too. I played EverQuest. Slotted items, augmentations . . . keys which were the result on if you were lucky on the /random roll in the raid to get one piece attended by 20-30 people . . . yeah, we’re not that far into a throwback. Count your blessings.

It’s easy to ignore 3 slots, because the Back slot was practically unused until now (practically unused! There were options but they cost a lot to exercise). And I don’t think you’re entirely clear on what Agony is. It starts after Fractal Difficutly 10, and is attached to certain enemy attacks. Which can, far as I have seen, be dodged/evaded. The dungeon itself is not gated, the “Hard Mode” is. Which is the same thing GW1 did with its Hard Mode – you had to beat the campaign to access its Hard Mode. And you really, REALLY had to know what you were doing or you’d die. A lot.

(Or, well, get a set of heroes set up in specific ways and turn Hard Mode into Loot Pinata Mode. This still took some minimum level of skill to do without screwing it up though.)

Also, I’m going to reflect your argument back at you. I don’t know what the game is going to be balanced to in the future. Do you? I don’t know how unbalancing full Ascended is going to be . . . do you? Is there some infallible crystal ball you’re looking into? Cause I could use some lottery numbers. (4,8,15,16,23,42 by the way)

On the flip side? It could be worse, it could be that newer content takes into account stuff they just added into balancing features. It could be that we have to race to keep up with a gear treadmill just to take part in the new content. If that happens, I’ll be right there behind you going “so long and thanks for all the karka” as I boot up my copy of Nethack to remind me of what unfair really is.

Ehhh, no, I don’t think so. It may look like it . . . and some people who are busy selling off that kind of gear? They’ll gladly tell you the only way to be “as cool as me” is to put hundreds of hours of work and shovel in thousands of gold to have a chance at reaching their greatness.

Get a tight-knit group. Get an organized guild(s) together. Think before you go rushing into something, and study your failures rather than throwing bigger numbers at it. Sure, it might work . . . until you need to do it again.

And if all else fails? Let the elitists have their fun, and post an open guild for people who share your mindset. They’re out there, and they’re likely in your time zone and availability.

Tobias Trueflight.8350

Any activity, be it WvW or dungeon crawling, has a limited number of player slots available.
For any group who wants to be competitive in these activities (because for a lot of us fun comes from the competitive aspect), they need to be as efficient as possible.
If I can only bring 5, or 30, or 166 people to a competitive activity… I am going to bring the best people I have.

If I have a choice between two roughly equally skilled players, but one of them has 20% higher stats because of better gear, there is no longer a choice.

Therefore – in any game where the maximum stats provided by passive things, such as gear, continues to increase -> players must continue to procure these items in order to remain on a level playing field.

Why are we even debating this? You know who is really good at explaining this stuff? Those guys over at ArenaNet… you know the ones who have written essays and delivered speeches on the subject.

Oh come on, you know why we’re talking about this. We’re debating this because we are not “those guys over at ArenaNet” and we have our own opinions on the topic. Also, I have nothing better to do while waiting to get natural gas turned on so I can get heat in my home. (I need a device which runs on Internet drama, so I can patent perpetual energy.)

Anyway, you’re talking of there “not being a choice” is a bit of a situational blindness. The best people you have are not always the strongest, the fastest, or the smartest. Sure, they excel at certain tasks but in WvW sheer raw statistic advantage can only take you so far. It becomes a numbers game not in statistics but in “body count”, which is one thing I actually dislike about WvW but . . . it’s in the nature of the game.

Superior numbers (body count) can, and will trump superior statistics as often as superior tactics. Who cares if 45 people attacking you have weaker gear than the 10 people defending? You’re more than likely going to get rolled in a straight up fight.

Therefore, if I have a choice between a singular player kitted out in the maximized statistical value of effectiveness who will run off and do his own thing . . . and 6 people with 20% less effectiveness who can work as a unit? No contest who I’m picking, I’ll go for units over singular elite soldiers.

Yes. As mentioned in the marketing literature, GW2 takes all that is good from GW1. In GW1 it was easy to get the best gear in the game because GW1 was not a grindy game and Anet doesn’t make grindy games. (Haha.) So, the same should be true of GW2.

Whomever said GW1 had no grind in it didn’t want Obsidian Armor, or the Treasure Hunter title.

No they weren’t required to progress, and they had barely any effect on the game play. (I think Treasure Hunter affected Lockpick break chance, but in HM it could only approach 50% chance to retain.)

Before we even consider Ascended gear, realize that stuff is not in the standard “hierarchy” of the game and in most cases . . . isn’t going to come into play.

After setting that aside, now stop and look at “maximum gear” and . . . I believe it is possible to craft Exotics from 400-level crafting. You’re going to need the materials, but those aren’t a massive hurdle to overcome. See, best method? Jewelcrafting. All you need is Copper/Silver/Gold ingots and the gems you get while mining or from other drops . . . and no other purchased items. Pure profit if you’re into mining every ore node you see.

(And you should anyway. Mine every ore, chop every tree, and gather each herb you see. Especially Omnomberries, some people will pay dearly for large quantities.)

Maximum statistic gear is available “easily”, in so far as “I don’t need to grind dungeons or do events with chests over and over”. It’s not like GW1, but it’s not like chasing those minmaxed scores from earlier games . . . and it’s definitely not as hard as it is in your average RPG.

You see… you now have an obligation to play this game in a very specific way. If you ever want to enjoy new content, be it this FotM dungeon or the next one, you must “earn” your spot and “work” for your gear.

The only thing you really need to work for is to learn what to do, and you need to earn the respect of at least four poor saps . . . er . . . extra targets . . . er . . . fellow noble adventurers.

I didn’t work for my gear, its either handcrafted or Orr map completion rewards. I’m not even using the flipping Ancient Karka Shell earring, because I have Opal Mithril and Emerald Mithril on and like the combination more. I have an exotic bow, which was in my completion reward for Cursed Shore. I have no other exotic parts but am saving up tier six materials so I can make it through my Leatherworking. Why? Because my drops of exotic armor have been either Light or Heavy and it’s pissed me off enough to say “screw it, I’ll craft it”.

Really, the biggest thing is not having the best gear; that’s an illusion fostered by years on years of mental blocks from other games. It’s important to have gear as close to your level as possible, but bleeding-edge upgrades? No. Handcrafted Masterwork will do just fine for 95% of the content. Dungeons and WvW comprise the other 5%, where you might possibly be outmatched . . . but in WvW this can be handled by not going 1v1. EVER.

(By the way, this is one of the cardinal rules, much like “never dig straight down” in Minecraft. Don’t try for 1v1 fights in WvW. It’s almost guaranteed that one person you saw isn’t alone and their buddies are 30sec behind them. Or ahead of them, able to double back on you.)
