This is a FTP game paid expansions are the way to go imo not cobbled together gamebreaking “free” content. (I say 0 because they shouldn’t be used to bring in more exclusion and elitism)

The sad thing is, this game is already full of exclusion and elitism towards players who enjoy vertical progression, and it’s posts like yours which prove it.

You deserve it. After all the things we’ve had to put up with vertical progression types…. we finally find a game that strays away from this model.. ONLY TO BE RUINED AGAIN.

I’m sick of vertical progression. You want it so bad?… Play a game that has it already built in.

I am starting to hate GW2 thanks to the ‘progression’ crowd.

No one deserves intense the intense closed-mindedness that elitism entails. I don’t think anyone set out to “ruin” anyone else’s experience, and finding a phantom crowd of “WoW locusts” to blame your problems on doesn’t help your case.

Heck, even if they’re real and not a phantom, that kind of attitude does set out to ruin someone’s experience.

You say that at some point there wasn’t much left to do for you in GW1, but let me remind you that the main reason for that is that they started making GW2. 5 years ago they pulled the plug out of real content for GW1 for the benefit of creating GW2. We all sort of dealt with that and accepted that because we were told that GW2 would be a similar experience but better. Don’t blame the lack of things to do in GW1 on GW1, it really was because they diverted all their attention to building GW2 that this happened.

Sadly, GW2 isn’t what they promised it to be. At least that’s my view…although the new direction with gear is a fact that they didn’t keep their promise.

What gets me most is that even after this they have the gall to keep their manifesto video on their website. They could at least admit that their philosophy changed when it’s that obvious.

Well there wasn’t much left for me to do other than:
Filling the Valor Monument
Filling the Resilience Monument
Party, Sweets, Drunkard, Lucky/Unlucky, Treasure Hunter
. . . and PvP titles

That’s pretty much it. And I didn’t want to do any of that long enough to make progress.

And I don’t blame the lack of content in GW1 on GW2, I blame it on them not having good ideas for what to do next with the engine. They still managed to do pretty good with “Guild Wars Beyond”. I loved War in Kryta, Hearts of the North was a great character piece and it made me hate Gwen a little less . . . and Winds of Change was just . . . interesting. (I used ellipses there to try to illustrate awed speechlessness. I loved it but it was at the same time so hard for me to get through.)

They had content they put out, but I still wound up taking about a year off between War in Kryta and the GW2 release. I showed up for special events and a few guild events (UW through Dhuum, something we never managed because screw Smite Crawlers in their ghostly carapaces . . . and Domain of Anguish, which I never managed because screw Titans with whatever’s left after the Smite Crawlers. Both these things were absolute terrors for myself and my guild even after we had a way of dealing with them.)

And I won’t get into my opinion on this “manifesto” point people keep harping on. It’s not a popular opinion I have on it so let’s not get into it.

Well, honestly, let’s put it this way:

You allow someone who has a personal anecdote that it’s broken to convince you, but someone with a personal anecdote that it’s fixed you jump over and bite?

That’s not particularly fair.

You made that up. I didn’t let anyone convince me either way. I haven’t announced to the forum that it is broken. I wouldn’t do that because I know that a personal experience doesn’t mean anything to everyone else.

No you just chose to take one particular person to task for saying it’s fixed using a snarky and exceedingly unnecessary tone. Did you blast everyone in the complaint thread as well? I would hope so since the vast majority of them are just as guilty of championing anecdotal evidence as the OP is here.

A whole thread full of people report their personal experience.

A single person who doesn’t work for Anet announcing a fixed bug.

If you cannot see the difference here, there is no point trying to reason with you.

- If someone asks you why and you can’t come up with a reason, they have the right to shrug and say “well, okay, then bye” without you getting annoyed or starting the name-calling up.
- If someone wants to discuss something with you and they don’t have the facts straight, or if someone on your own side is mistaken, correct them without calling them an idiot. Conversely, if they’re trying to offer something they think is worth looking at as far as things go . . . don’t just go dismissing it out of hand as propaganda and lies.
- If you want to voice your opinion with the intent of getting it changed, you have to be clear, concise, and polite about what you think is wrong. Using words which get changed to a cat-like one isn’t a help.

Actually, I agree with you. And I’ll assume your post wasn’t directed towards me, but towards posters in general, as I have been guilty of none of the points you addressed.

Far as I can tell . . . it’s on a cycling timer. I’ve never sat and timed it (I don’t have that kind of time) but I’m fairly sure. The three different trigger events are, I think, randomized so that one of them is the trigger leading into the next two legs of it.

Even if that timer is 6 hours with a 2 hour window for the pre-event and I just barely missed it due to needing sleep, it’s horrible that such a good fight (when all the dragon champions are forever lagging like hell) is set at such a high timer. Really hope that if it’s timed Anet rethinks the timing on it a bit so it can be fun.

. . . you’re lagging and culling on the dragon champions too? So it’s not just me then. Awesome, no upgrade for me!

I think the timer is so long because they’re supposed to be somewhat special to do. It’s supposed to be the “wow that was cool” kind of thing the first time you encounter it.

I’ve got no problem with this, I came from a game where mobs could respawn between 17 and 32 hours after last ToD…

But why make the dragon champions farmable when they’re not even near as much fun as this one we don’t get to do but once a week if we’re lucky? I think Anet needs to balance it out a bit.

This reminds me, I wonder how often the Fire Elemental is up. I need to go take care of that thing.

farming UW and FOW were soloable by many builds, which only required precision timing, and that can be easily learned once you do it a few times.

Wait, hold on. Are you seriously claiming that FoW and UW were as easy as pressing “1” in GW2 during dragon world events or one-time events or pressing “F” when running orichalcum?

I am not claiming that GW1 was rocket science, but come on, people were even selling services to help others aquire black widow spiders. Did you ever hear anyone type “paying someone to help me kill Jormag”?

I heard a frustrated voice once saying they would offer 5 silver if someone could at least link a waypoint near Teaquatl. But that’s about the closest.

Also, apples and oranges. The Underworld was pretty tough even if all you wanted was the spider. And you only get at most eight characters . . . Jormag is open and as many people can show up as the software can cram in there.

Which leads to . . . grrph . . . that lag and “culling”

I think lots of people just are used to 0 to 10 ratings and it’s subconscious. Me, I still tend to rate things A, B, C, D, F with +/- on them and then have to translate that over once I answer the question.

For one whining itself is care bear regardless of the subject people should man up.

This is so classic, I just had to address it.

This attitude is one of the main things wrong in the world today. You’re conditioned from birth to just go with the flow, don’t rock the boat, don’t question anything, don’t take a stand, just be a good little citizen, obey and don’t you dare complain. About anything. Just keep bending over and taking it. Then you grow old all hunched over, from spending your whole life in the bent over position.

In my point of view, “manning up” is the exact opposite of shutting up and taking it.
But what do I know, I’m not a man.

How come that these two people discuss how GW2 will compete on the MMORPG market under the expression that it will be horizontal, with no grind for gear higher stats at max lvl? The video is one year old, ANet advertised it like that not only in the manifesto but for all the years it was in development!

And the change with the patch throws all this over board.

I really, really wish they’d finish the darn Ascended roll out already, and think hard about doing it the next time. Because I get the impression there were some sort of plans in mind to handle other means than just Fractals.

I’m also not sure who’s talking here, these people don’t work for ArenaNet do they?

No they do not work for ANet, but discuss this game on the knowledge that was available at that time and that clearly states that GW2 stands on it’s own, with a unique approach adopted from GW1.

And when you say, they should implement raids and tiers, last of which they start to implement, that means they try to get players from more traditonal mmo’s and deviate from their original approach. That is was much of the outrage is about, besides from changes to drop rates and introduction of expensive recipes.

So, they don’t work for ArenaNet. Okay, I was wondering since I didn’t see a name and title show up. And so, well, most of what they said is the same as if I got a microphone and sat with my couple friends and speculated on Minecraft based on what we’d see in Dinnerbone’s tweets.

What you have here are a couple of bloggers just speculating on what has been shown so far and said. And drawing a lot of inferences I noted, along with some concrete sort of statements which were dubious even during Beta Weekend 2. This was a year out, there wasn’t any kind of open beta yet . . . meaning they were very likely not done building the whole thing yet.

Nice find and it was entertaining, but I think I got more entertainment from The Spoony One’s take. I’d link but since he swears like a sailor with a hangover I’m not linking it here. His PAX video on 9/13/2010 for instance.

But since vast majority of people love farming and the idea that they’re better than someone else purely because of time invested, there is farming in this game and many other online games.

I don’t think that’s why there’s farming in this game, I barely think of it as farming in this game. I get on, I do my list for Daily Achievements, collect my Jug and Mystic Coin . . . and decide if I feel like hanging around. Some days I don’t even bother (like lately where I just haven’t had the energy).

But for the sake of argument, call it farming. I vary it up enough through different areas that I keep it interesting. One day, Queensdale. Next day I do Metrica Province, maybe. Or Plains of Ashford. Maybe the guild mates are waiting on the Claw of Jormag because they want to do it together so I go to Frostgorge Sound and do my Daily there.

(Actually, that was pretty fun since as I showed up they pointed out the Ori node and when the next guy showed up I added an Ancient Wood and Snow Truffles to the notes.)

So, I don’t know. Can you consider that the kind of farming bad for the game?

Oh and Grandpa always thinks it’ll rain when his lumbago acts up. I still watch the Weather Channel though and I don’t put on a rain coat until, ya know – I SEE rain.

Not to be overly flippant . . . but if he thinks it’s going to rain and I’m going out that day I’ll still take an umbrella or raincoat with me just in case. (What the heck is lumbago?)

The wise money is betting that Ascended may end up about as hard to get a hold of as Exotics today. Legendaries are a real kitten to get right? Psst – they’re getting stepped up to the stats of Ascended in time, from the point they are now… the stats of the Exotics which ANYONE CAN GET! I leave everyone with that last fact to draw correlations from

The problem is simply that people don’t know for sure how easy or not they will be, all they have is how hard they are now. Again, we really do need to know more about how else we’re supposed to get them.

Quite apart from the fact they did something they said they wouldn’t do (youtube GW2 manifesto) they’ve done it in such a way that they’ve introduced exclusion and elitism the 2 ugliest faces of any MMO.

There is a market for that different kind of MMO they promised. The best revenue return would likely come from sticking to that and doing it well. The other revenue maker in any game is a loyal customer base and love it or hate it WoW has that, GW1 had that – and GW2 is losing it and doesn’t seem to care enough to communicate beyond fluffy PR statements.

I’m reading the manifesto . . . I’m not sure which part you are talking about, Ruby Red, but you know I’m betting it’s this one.

So much of traditional MMO combat is rote and repetitive. You execute the same strategy over and over again, just augmented over time with better and better gear. After a while it starts to feel like you’re playing a spreadsheet. Combat needs to be about making creative choices, and it needs to feel immediate, active, and visceral So we’ve put a huge focus on strengthening our combat, giving the player limitless choices, and providing the thrill and joy of being in combat.

Am I about right? I suppose you’re right, there’s not really limitless choices involved in combat. I still haven’t been able to bait and provoke a monster into a pit trap so I can smash on its head. Or get on the Shatterer’s back and hack away until it shakes me off, maybe even killing it that way.

I feel so cheated.

Oh, you probably meant this oft quoted sentence:

. . . are you paying a monthly fee? I don’t think I am, hang on and let me check.

. . . nope. And you know what, it really doesn’t suck my life away. Right now that’s Minecraft and a server I have to moderate once we can figure out what the heck happened to the physical box while the owner was on vacation. I’m not forced to spend hours preparing to have fun (pretty sure that was a shot at organizing raids and making sure everyone wasn’t AFK when it started). I want to do something, I do just go out and see if I can feasibly do it. If not, I’ll see if people show up to help out. And if not again, fine, skip it and go to the next thing I’d like to do.

How true are the following statements for you on a scale of 0 to 5?

1) I felt like I had little to do once my main character hit level 80, I got full exotic gear and 100% world completion. By the time of the patch my enthusiasm for the game had already lost a lot of momentum and I was really looking forward to new content.

2) Obtaining ascended gear gives me something new to aim for and boosts/refreshes my enthusiasm for GW2.

3)The lack of a tier after exotic is something that always bothered me. I feel that equipping my toon with better and better gear is something I look forward to in a game and that element was missing from GW2.

4) I believe that future paid expansion packs should introduce new tiers of gear.

5) In my wishlist of things to come for GW2 three months after its release (new areas/foes/weapons/events/skills, fixing bugs, tweaking class balance, anything at all) the introduction of a tier slightly better than exotic ranked pretty high.

Should I expand and explain why?

1 – I did hit Level 80, 100% map completion, and I was looking forward to new content. I did feel like I had little direction as I didn’t really want to do dungeons without my friends.

2 – It does give me something to aim for, much like in GW1 I had Obsidian Armor to aim for. I made no serious attempts at it then, I won’t do it here . . . but it remains in the back of my head that it’d be a nice long term goal. You know, when I am really bored.

3 – I didn’t give thought at all to a lack of tier between Exotic and Legendary because as far as I thought . . . there was instead “General Exotic”, “Named Exotic”, “Precursors”, and “Legendaries”. And all of them weren’t really on my radar except for one: “Crafted Exotic”. (I’d just finished 400 Leatherworking and 400 Huntsman)

4 – I believe future expansion packs would be the best place to add such, if they wanted to at all. Do I want them to? No, not especially.

5 – See 3.

The Skinner Box

I dunno, I’m sure of any of us who were awake for at least 50% of our compulsory school days have a pretty good command of the theory and principles of a Skinner Box. I still think these little Extra Credit vids are kinda entertaining. I don’t think you can reduce GW2, or most decent games, down to strictly the push the button – get the pellet model though. I suppose the idea is woven into pretty much all games though, and not just MMOs or even just video games, to some extent.

The problem I see is that some people try to point out the existance of it in games in a durogatory manner. Kind of trying to draw some kind of connection between – mice eating tasty treats and humans enjoying a sense of accomplishment in their liesure activities. You know kind of some, “see you gamers areno better / more complex than a lab rat!”

I’m not saying the OP or even the Extra Credit team are trying to draw that connection, just commenting on how I’ve seen some attempt to use it in the past and over simplify (or complicate maybe?) everything from human greed to a game of darts…

It’d be hard to draw that conclusion when they were writing that EC show, since I don’t think GW2 had been released at that point. And the thing about the Skinner Box and using similar mechanics is that they’re possibly buried under layers of obfuscation when used on human subjects . . . especially ones who might know of the Box.

. . . that said, not everything is “an obvious Skinner’s Box” just because you get a shiny reward for doing something. And the intent doesn’t have to be insidiously calculated. It can simply be:

“Alice, you know if we put these jumping puzzles . . . what do we do to entice someone to actually go looking for them?”
“I dunno, Bob. I know, let’s but a chest at the end so they don’t feel they wasted their time.”
“Good, what should the chest have in it?”
“Make it about two to three weapons, maybe some gold, scale it to the area level. How are they going to find that one we put in Diessa?”
“Make an achievement with the name of it, they’ll have a hint where to start looking.”

(Also, ummmm, I don’t think I handled a lesson about the Skinner Box when I took Psych. Standford Prison Experiment yes. Skinner Box, I’m not sure if I did. )

I’m staring at what appears to be an apple sitting on a table. One person tells me this is a poisonous apple and we are all going to die. Another person looks at it and says the first guys is stupid, this isn’t an apple. Either way, until I’m able to read a little more info on the label, I’m not biting. And I just wish the label said something more than “we’re excited about you eating our fruit”

A good enough analogy.

I don’t mind that Agony and Infusions are pretty much tied to the Fractals. To me it’s like the Challenge Missions in GW1 – you can do them until you can’t proceed anymore. There’s loot, drops, and fun stuff in there but you don’t need to do it. (Presumably, if Ascended becomes available outside Fractals, you might not need to visit it at all to get it and thus . . . )

And what would make me comfortable was if the increased level of Infusions was simply bumping the Agony Resistance up rather than the other bonuses

Well of course I do, those asura gates need to go somewhere, why not more content?

You know what I mean. You want content available to only hardcore grinders with no life.

I do, specifically, or “you” as in everyone who is not you?

Then I ask myself, why you bought this game in the first place, as it was advertised, tested in several magazines and on webepages with having exactly not this gated content like other mmorpgs do?

I mean why buy a “jump and run” game when you want a “shooter”?

. . . you misunderstood my question. And it was a question, not a statement. I was wondering if he meant ME specifically. Because gated content isn’t what I want . . . but it’s sometimes kind of a benefit to require a certain storyline item or such to progress. Especially if a zone can only hold so many people before it begins hitting problems (or Overflow after Overflow, after Overflow . . .)

There are reasons why gated content existed in a game, and it wasn’t entirely “just to be exclusive”. Maybe the zone can only handle 150 people in it before it goes nuts and stuff starts bugging up. Maybe it’s meant to reward people who found the parts of a scavenger hunt, so now they get to look at it. Maybe it’s not connected to the rest of the landscape by an entrance and thus you need to use something to reach it, hence “gated” in that you have to use the gate to reach it.

(That last one I am in favor of, it can be very fun and allows you to avoid needing to fill landscape between points with pointless areas. )

Average Player GW2 – Probably would take a few weeks to hit 80, in that time that player is perhaps going to amass a maximum of about 10g in that time give or take. If the player wants a legendary item, you’re talking maybe as much as 250 hours of hardcore farming, perhaps much longer depending on TP prices and/or the player getting lucky. Not counting Pre-cursor drops.

Yeah but far as I can tell the original intent was for Legendaries to require that much to get to, and the bonus was that they had neat effects as opposed to Exotics. Yes, I said “original intent” there, because now with Ascended in the picture the goal seems to be to get to Exotics and upgrade at your leisure . . . will you be maximally effective?

No, but then again, I’ve never played . . .

. . . scratch that . . .

I’ve played very few games where being absolutely to the maximum effectiveness the player can muster is a must.

I don’t really like Extra Credit. The series is an opinion box. A vlog. But the entire structure of the video is him acting like a teacher and telling you how wrong you are and how right he is. It makes him sound condescending; like he has some amazing insight into the world that nobody else has.

Well . . . to be fair, the trio who put that together are in the industry. And I wager the show is written at a low level so they can introduce the ideas to people who don’t know anything about it at a basic level . . . and fit it into the video time.

You are right it’s something of a soapbox, but that isn’t exactly an invalidation of the work. It just means you have to be careful about how you take it.

I agree, that all at once would have been better. And that it would probably have cut down on complaining. But what I’ve read here is essentially one group of players complaining (not always eloquently) that this is ANet introducing a gear treadmill and it’s the end of the world. I then see another group that jumps in and says the first group is stupid, there is no treadmill, and that these changes are both awesome and needed.

I’m not in either of those groups. There is very obviously a treadmill here, at least based on what little official communication we have from ANet. It’s not necessarily a bad thing, and I’m not necessarily opposed to it. But if your leading counterpoint is that there is no treadmill, then I question your ability to deduce info correctly and I don’t respect the remainder of your argument.

My biggest issue is ANet’s communication or lack thereof. They know what they are planning. They’ve known how this infusion thing would work long before this patch. Not informing the players more than they have is really negligence on their part at best. All of this fighting amongst the players is a result of that negligence.

That’s not my leading counterpoint, although we haven’t hit “gear treadmill” just yet. As people have said, this could be the start of one or it could be a false start. I remain cautiously optimisic. (Fatalistic is a world view I hate, because it leads to me being an unpleasant person to everyone around me. But this isn’t about me, so let’s move on.) In short . . . I’m not sure if this is a treadmill yet. I need more than vagueness from a specifically worded sentence (“we might introduce more tiers later”). Doesn’t mean they will, doesn’t mean they won’t, only that it’s possible.

I will agree that the communication isn’t / wasn’t all that good but the only thing I have to say is: given the reactions of the few who are really angry and passionate about their views, can you blame them for getting quiet? The upcoming AMA is going to be interesting, primarily because I want to see if it goes badly and if so . . . how many people are going to start calling for a blood feud. (Figuratively, of course.)

I agree this wasn’t well handled. Any of this. The event was founded on an interesting premise but technical issues made it “a qualified success” instead of a good kind of success. The staggered introduction of Ascended gear has left a lot to speculation of what the rest of it will look like, and if there will be alternate earning methods than Fractals of the Mists, and just in general “what the heck is going on?”

The oh-so-common ’it’s just a game, have fun!’ mentality just reeks of apathy. ‘A game’ still took millions of dollars and thousands of man-hours to create. It still holds the hopes and dreams of equally numerous supporters, developers and players. ‘A game’ can be a hobby or a passion for a person, and for people who actually appreciate that passion, it’s very much worth arguing about problems.

No, it’s not just a game. It’s a game.

. . . funny, though, and I’m glad you brought this up. It did take that much effort and time to create. There were human beings who poured years into developing this, and it’s perfectly fine for people to get fired. For a company to go under. For all sorts of various other things which were said in game which I won’t repeat here because they are the FAR side of being permissible to say in public, let alone on the company’s own forum.

I pointed out on a thread asking for at least politeness if not respect towards the employees, there is no reason to treat them as undeserving of even basic courtesies.

“It’s just a game, have fun!” from me isn’t apathy, it’s a shortened form of this:

“It’s just a game. It’s an excuse to stop your troubles outside the computer screen for some time while you get a chance to relax and do stuff. It’s a nice world in Tyria, despite the fact the Risen keep drooling all over everything. This place is meant to be entertaining, and interesting, and possibly more than that. If you’re not having fun with what the game is giving you, then you can do a couple things.

You can grind your teeth about it, complain under your breath and keep moving because you want to finish the task you chose. Then you quit and come back to it again another time, or don’t . . . the game doesn’t care, it doesn’t have feelings, it’s not out to spite you. It’s a game.

Or . . . you invent a way to enjoy yourself. Be creative. Do something unusual. Sit down and chatter with your friends. Hook a couple people together who seem good and go out and do something for an hour. Go smack Blingg upside the head for his annoyingly loud voice. Dye your gear without using the same color twice, and try to make the ugliest thing ever. Start a chorus line. Shadow someone in the starting zones cheering them on. Screenshot something and make a postcard, “Welcome to Southsun Cove, don’t feed the crabs”.

It’s just a game. If you’re not having fun, then make it fun."

Or, you know, you can quit it in disgust and find something else to hold your interest. That’s always an option, I’d just rather people didn’t. I need minions for when I eventually take over Rurikton and replace the name on his statue to “Prince Leeroy”.

No grind? I feel like I am grinding all the time, my highest level is 36, I just grind hearts and look for PoI’s and Skill Challenges and vistas all the time, feels like a grind to me.
Leveling in this game is one of the slowest games I’ve played in a while, yes there’s the so called events, but they take a decent amount of time and give low amounts of xp.

. . . you never played EverQuest. Every 5 levels after 30 (that is, 35, 40, 45, 50, 55, 60) seemed to require about ten times the experience of the previous level by some devious bug. From there you were okay and it seemed more in line with before the “Heck Level”. Until the next one. And don’t get me started on anything past 60.

And for years they were saying “no such thing” despite being able to demonstrate with timestamped screenshots.
Oh and the icing? Dying took 5-10% of your experience total to the next level. Not a flat amount, so you lost more XP during a “Heck Level”.

Be very grateful you missed this. It was a grind of nigh epic proportions.

You are comparing an old school mmo to this? I’ve played grinding games, my first being Asheron’s Call, please don’t give me the “well at least it isn’t like this game.” excuse, you people are saying this isn’t a grinding game, there is a grind in this game. Leveling in this game is slow, maybe not as slow as the old mmo’s that are 10 + YEARS OLD!!! but still slow nontheless. (and yes I did play Everquest as well)

Oh please, read my posts, I didn’t say there wasn’t a grind in this game. I didn’t say there wasn’t grind in GW1. I said there WAS an element of grind in GW1, as there’s one in this game.

As for leveling in this game being slow, it’s slow if you do nothing but tag random enemies. It gets better if you find stuff that’s been alive longer as there’s a bonus for killing stuff which has been alive longer. And I mean to the tune of “138 + 749 Bonus” when I pick on some of the yellow non-aggressive monsters in areas.
Mining/chopping/harvesting gets me more than that per node. Participating in the big DE chains can yield a bit. Daily Achievement awards give you something like a flat 3% I think, in addition to what you get while doing the achievements. Simply doing Daily Achievements I racked up two levels over three days. At level 80. And that’s half an hour to an hour maximum to do that.

I’m giving you “at least it’s not X” excuse because, you know, I don’t really think very many people playing this game did play games older than 10 years. Or if they do I think they’re suppressing the memory in fear of what horrors might be remembered.

It was the same in GW1 . . . leveling through killing was a heckuva lot slower than doing the quests. GW2, it’s slower unless you do some DEs or other things than just beat down everything in range.

Seriously, everyone needs to go do something else. This is getting really old, really fast. You keep complaining about “Gear-Treadmill”, but, what if Anet makes alternate methods to acquire “ascended” gear?. What if they make it so you can get an “ascended” weapon by putting 4 exotic weapons of the same type into the forge. Considering all the stats are built in, the chances of getting what you want are pretty low. So what do you do with it?. You put it on the TP. Since it’s “game-wide”, there will be a flood of “ascended” gear up for grabs, and the more there are, the cheaper they will BE. How hard did you have to “Grind” to buy the gear off the TP. If you’re like me, and have a lot of gold just sitting in the bank, then, not very hard. And, what if they add MORE ways. What if the add a way to get them through “crafting”?, or drops from “World Boss” chests??. The point is, we (which includes YOU) have NO IDEA what their plans are. So, if you gotta cry, then cry up a storm. Just don’t expect anyone to really care.

How does the availability of accessing the treadmill in different ways, not make it a treadmill? Yes, a major point is that we have no idea what their plans are. That’s a problem. Players are concerned about the direction of this game. There is nothing wrong with those players voicing those concerns and asking for clarification.

A lack of maturity and respect toward fellow players does not make one’s opinion any more valid.

I can’t begin to say what plans they have (I don’t work there) but I’d wager Token/Badges exchange of some sort. If they were going to be more creative, a guaranteed drop the first time out of certain DE chests like ones for the Cathedrals, Claw of Jormag, you get the drift.

Again, yet again, if they’d rolled this out all at once instead of in pieces, I doubt this would be half as painful to watch.

It was supposed to be rolled out in stages, so I’d wager they’re bundling it into the next patch. Definitely before the end of the year 2025, if I had to put money down on it.

If I wasn’t putting money on it, I’d say between next week and the end of the month, as there’s this whole holiday thing they had this weekend.

The new Ascended gear aside, the much more pressing and important factor is that tying this Ascended gear to only one aspect of the game has bled the others dry.

Further, pushing people who are after shinies into the most difficult aspect of the game has encouraged exclusionary behavior in an effort to seek “easier means” as well as outright elitist trolling.

THIS is the biggest issue with the last patch, not the stats (Not that I don’t think the stats are ALSO a problem, just not NEARLY as big of a problem as this!)

i dont see what the problem is the gear-threadmill is not a problem in this game because you are NOT being charged 20$ monthly and being forced to play and its not like the new gear triples in power compared to the current gear the diferences are minimal, but yeah what the hell is rong with new things in game over time if we are NOT being charged at all for them.

It’s not “wrong” . . . not in a fundamental way, taken on its own.

The problem comes in when you start taking the one fact “It’s okay to add new things to the game” and people don’t like that new thing. Now you have a problem, partly in the fact you added something which was unpopular with some people and partly in the fact there’s players who are not happy with you now.

How do you solve it? Well if it was that simple, you just take it back out, say “oops” and go on with your work.

Now, the problem compounds when part of the players don’t want you to remove it. Who cares what the reason is, the crucial part is there are at least two groups in opposition over the simple “we added this”.

How do you solve this problem?

It gets better, though. Say now that when you added this you firmly thought “this will be cool” and your idea wasn’t received well. (This is also a gross understatement).

How do you solve it now?

Edit: Hint – You’re not going to make everyone happy in the last two options. It’s just not happening. We’re now back to square one – you have a problem

The best middle-ground response is to spread Ascended gear as far and wide as exotics were at the launch of the game. This removes the general feeling that you MUST run (explative-deleted)-hard fractals just to get meaningful rewards for your max-level toon, and will thus stop the bleeding and start the healing on the heavily-impacted “other parts” of the game.

You can even toss out new armor models for each Ascended set on the existing explorer mode dungeons.

Do I dislike the fact they’re introducing a vertical gear-grind? YES. BUT the much more pressing and important factor is that tying this Ascended gear to only one aspect of the game has bled the others dry. Further, pushing people who are after shinies into the most difficult aspect of the game has encouraged exclusionary behavior in an effort to seek “easier means” as well as outright elitist trolling.

Indeed, and it’s why I keep saying I think their biggest misstep was rushing this part out and letting the rest languish But even so, I think this big outcry will have tainted it all by the time it finally gets sent out into the world. (I’m wagering next week.)

I am not saying Guild Wars 2 is the only game guilty of this. It isn’t, not by a long shot. I just wanted to share something with the rest of you to address a question that is asked of the segment who is generally disgruntled with the game as of recent events.

It’s interesting, you should check it out. Pretty much everything from Extra Credits is great food for thought if you are passionate about games.

I’ll cop to wanting to stay around to see where things are going lore-wise. Of course if the game stops being fun for me in a more serious manner?

I’ll just look for the cinematics on YouTube or something. (Read: how I stopped playing “Devil May Cry 3”).

ANet has said they are making Ascended and then Legendary. The escalation may end there, it may not. Time will tell, not me, and not you. So in the meantime, it’s too soon to say they are turning GW2 into a perpetual gear escalation game.

I hope it ends there . . . for the time being. If two years down the line we have the cap at 120 instead of 80, I’d hope that Ascended is used as the pinnacle for the 80-100 levels and a new tier in 100-120.

Why do I say that? Well, mostly this – consider the tiers you have available and when. At least, where I’d aim for:

- 1-10, you’ll be decked out in Basic (White) and Fine (Blue). Mostly Basic and not having your full armor set yet without going out of your way for it. (Protip: Don’t. Do your personal story for it.)
- 10-30, Masterwork (Green) starts to show up and its base range is higher than Fine. You won’t see that much at first, but it’s not going to be hard to see you phasing out Basic in favor of Fine and Masterwork.
- 30-60, Rare (Yellow) now starts to drop and it’s a significant boost off Fine. Of course, it’s not easy to find so you’re likely going to either turn to crafting it, go to the Trading Post, or do jumping puzzles / events with chests. (Note: those last two can be a boon. I think you are guaranteed a rare the first time you do any of the three Dragon Champions.)
- 60-80, Exotic (Orange/Gold) appears. This is the best you’re going to see as you hit Orr and you won’t see it drop often. On the bright side, you can complete the map in these leveled areas and get one randomized item handed to you. Or you can start saving your Karma from Daily Achievements (now anyway) or events to replace Fine/Masterwork one piece at a time. Or you can dive into dungeons.
- Ascended (Red/Pink). Well now you’ve pushed past the terrors of Orr and come out the other side alive. This tier is available through effort and assumes you dedicate yourself to looking into earning it. These are unique items, reminders of lore of past heroes, and now you can get your hands on them. Now this gear’s Infusions protects you from Agony, which is a product of creatures manipulating the Mists against you. Most times . . . you’ll never need its protection. Take on one the challenges of the deep Mists? Come prepared with it or skill or both.
- Whatever-Tier (who knows what color). The next threat has been exposed to Tyria, and it’s going to need something more than just enchanted metal. You need to study the opponent and their nature, and it turns out their own power is one of the most effective things to use against them. And by studying it you now know how to harden yourself against it. Kill them, harness their essences, and forge your weapons and armor to withstand their attacks and return their favor. Of course . . . don’t take it to the battlegrounds in the Mists. It’s no good there. (i.e., No using it on WvWvW)
- Legendary. Weapons and trinkets which are not the product of old legends but the start of new ones. Making one should be a feat to be remembered and celebrated, the culmination of your career as an adventurer. For all the unpleasant times, for the trials you overcame, and to show you are serious about leading a new age . . . this is yours.

All fluff and stuff, and sure I’d tweak it while working on it. The point being that Ascended should be reserved for anything dealing with the Mists and if another tier comes in, it should be for threats on/against Tyria. And the idea that Agony is reserved pretty much for special types of bosses post-80 prevents you from absolutely requiring the gear.

Swamp is not that hard. It’s annoying, but as people are learning things I find a mixture of guildies and PuG’s to be fine. Nothing is insurmountable, and I do enjoy how Arena Net like to make hard things.

I like the design of the swampland one, and I like that it’s meant to be one you can’t just bully with power. It still is heckuva frustrating one.

Others I like are the Urban Battleground (Flame Legion, to arms!) and the Snowblind Fractal. Haven’t gotten to do more yet.

The idea at the swamp is to not go via the gates but jump via the trees next to the gates.

-For the furthest runs use ele or thief (endless speedbuff and teleport help) and one of the other classes for the others. (not sure mesmer portals work I never tried/needed)
-If you have an annoying combo (the 3 far ones), pick up and drop the orb and you ll get a new one.
-Make sure you know where the traps are and avoid them.
-If the mossman/champion is on the route get one of the 2 spare players to distract him.
-Let the 2 spare players help with clearing out mobs that might be in the way.
-Make sure the runners have condition remove and stability or teleport skills to get up from traps you accidently hit
-The most important thing is to know where the mini jumps are to get over the walls. Every wall has 1 or 2 jumps you can use to get over so you dont have to get lucky with a gate not closing.

Thanks much Jakar. As a ranger I found Signet of Renewal and Rampage As One both pretty much make the far left (Trap-ridden) much easier to deal with. You can’t be immobilized by the bear traps and Signet reduces the effects to 10 seconds . . . or you hit a tripwire (with no knockdown) and immediately trigger it to dump it to your pet.

The problem was the gates and trying to get an idea of the others. The skelk never stop spawning and usually would overwhelm me soon as I started running . . . the center-top one with the mosquitoes was always apparently too far.

I think the only siege of Divinity’s Reach we will ever possibly see is by Centaurs. If the White Mantle ever took over it would be so they owned the power, and they would want the city standing strong once they had control. And then the Mursaat show up and spectral agony every human in Divinity’s Reach to death because they are still pissed about that genocide thing…

Sieges don’t have to be blatantly destructive, it can just be the Mursaat camping on the entry and killing a human every hour the leadership holds out. And how long would the council let Queen Jennah hold out?

IS there another way to get this BloodStone Shard ?

cuz I spend most point on skills, so even at 100% map completion I cannot get enough skillpoint to buy it to craft my legendary :/

Yes. Once you reach 80 you will still get experience but each time you “level” you will instead get an extra Skill Point. And once you reach 80 you should still have a fair amount leftover, I think? I forget, it’s been a while. I think I got all my skills unlocked before I hit 80.

The solution, if you haven’t guessed, is to continue hunting down experience. Event chains are good for this, as are Daily Achievements.

And if you don’t know, Bloodstone Shards are part of the Legendary recipes. Therefore, it’s meant to be time-consuming (while not being impossible).

Oooh, hmmm.

You know what free game is awesome and has a really good business model? Nethack. Not much in the way of grind or farm unless you really want to, and it runs on just about anything. Heck it runs on some smartphones, just fine. But it is massively challenging.

Also, OP, I like your spirit but can we come up with a way that isn’t going to annoy people while hurting your server’s chances? Like roleplaying? Stage a production of a play in town clothing somewhere mostly safe where people can see it. Organize a storyline and recruit bored people on your server to play it out in a way which resembles dynamic events. Get a small group of friends to make Charr characters of a class they like and make a warband-guild roaming Ascalon stomping out enemies.

The bandits are funded by the White Mantle (if we believe the GW2 wiki, andI think we can: http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Bandit ).

The bandits are orginazed, seem to have some sort of uniform and symboland the symbol is found in many camps. And if the white mantle will be back, so will be the Mursaat, treathening The human kingdom of Kryta, the Sylvari of the Pale tree and the Asura (the white mantle had and probably still have a huge influence in the maguma wastes and jungle!).

Important houses (Caudecus Beetlestone and Julias Zamon, both ministers of Kryta and man of noble birth) being a member of ‘the bandits’ shows that they are not just ordinary bandits robbin’ people along the road. They are a bigger threat then we expect. They ARE the White Mantles army.

If they will start something like a siege on Divinity’s reach, they are by far the most kitten rogue faction!

No idea what kitten you’re talking about, is that charr slang? Maybe you should rephrase it.

These groups aren’t out to destroy Divinity’s Reach with something so base as a siege. In the first two chapters of the human personal storyline you can see pretty much how they work. Inspire or pay someone to start trouble and put together a big splashy thing to discredit the Seraph and Queen . . . try and play it up in political arenas and dissemble it so the “loyal” folks are the ones who are out to seize power while the “traitors” are disposed of before they can so much as muster a sound defense. And if they manage to get a defense together then . . . how can we trust the courts if they almost ruined an innocent man? Who set that up, hmmm?

That’s how the human rogue faction works – whispers in back rooms, blades in back alleys, misinformation and misdirection. Sacrifice pawns so that you can take the queen off the board and then move towards checkmate.

. . . and if they CAN contact the Unseen Ones again to return and bolster the fallen White Mantle? So long after the solutions to resisting their effects are lost to history? THEN there might be a siege moving on Divinity’s Reach. Not of humans but of Jade.

I saw that, funny! glad the moderators weren’t knee-jerk about it

On the other hand, so many of the 10k posts on ascension have been panics about having to keep up to compete in wvw, or feeling forced to get the gear — for those concerns, the miniscule influence is relevant.

Its not the amount, its the principle.

Actually it’s the interest that’s killer.

(And yes, that’s relevant, if we look at the “treadmill” as a compounding interest curve we are in so much trouble . . . )

How? This compounding interest is like what my bank pays for checking accounts. I always keep a few thousand $$ there, but at tax time there’s almost nothing to claim.

Compounding fractions of a percent is non-zero, but infinitesimal.

In this analogy, let me point out compounding interest can be very bad if you’re managing not to pay down all the value of the interest.

For this, let’s use “interest” to represent the effort to get Ascended. Now, if later tiers get added with higher stats and more effort, and you still didn’t get Ascended (i.e. didn’t pay down the interest) . . .

Then you’re looking at more effort, continuously, until you can put down enough money to make the principal go down so the interest doesn’t compound so badly.

. . . this is how loans make money off you.

It also depends on the period of how often it’s compounded. Yearly? Not a big deal. Monthly? You might be able to work with that. Daily?

“Uh oh.”

So my hope is if this turns out to be compounding, it’s more like “yearly” rather than “daily”.

I’d rather it not be any kind of form of this at all, and I truly hope it isn’t. But everyone is thinking of a linear progression when a curve could be as likely with the data we have right now.

Okay then maybe not under 75 copper, maybe just anything worth less than half of what your blues and greens sell for Still . . . harvest everything. Don’t leave loot laying around. KILL everything you can. See an event? Go there if there’s other people doing it.

Also, remember your Daily Achievements will net you a Mystic Coin and some money. You can finish those in a half hour if you know a good zone to check out.

What's The Point of Guilds?

I think the point of guilds is the same in GW2 as it is in any other MMO. Your points could be said in any game to be honest. In all MMOs the point of guilds is to allow you to congregate with like minded people. In my case, that is a guild of people mostly in our 30s that want a nice peaceful mature environment. For other people it might be a group of people that all want to swear like sailors. For yet others it might be PvP that draws them together. That is the point of guilds, everything else is just a bonus.

Exactly, it did confuse me if the question was meant for Guild Wars or just in general . . . so I gave a generalized answer

I have seen these types of posts pop up in other games too. They seem to come from somebody who has been hurt in some why by a guild. Often it seems to be people that try to find their guild by joining random invites in game.

My suggestion with guilds is to research a lot before you find one. Have a conversation with the guild leader. Then think about it for awhile before you join. Maybe try grouping with guild members and see how you fit in.

I researched many guilds before I joined mine. That was in 2007 in LOTRO, I have now been with that same guild for 5 years. There was hardly a point to guilds in LOTRO either, just storage really. Yet, I am still playing with those fools. :P

I found the one I’m in during Guild Wars 1, a Canthan New Year festival was going on and I was helping out and chattering with some of the folks while going out for Lunar Token farming between event finales. They thought I was kinda interesting so I was brought on.

Every year, like clockwork, we’d be there for Canthan New Year picking up a district and making sure it’d get all the meals done.

Spend some money to get yourself gathering tools and a Basic Salvage kit. Salvage everything worth less than 75 copper, and mine/chop/harvest everything you see. Sell the proceeds on the Trading Post.
