Personally I don’t like the skills on the longbow, but I enjoy the mobility of shortbow. It’s really a playstyle choice more than anything, I don’t think one is inherently better than the other.

GuildWars 2 XBox 360 gamepad script

Yeah, this works fine with a controller. I’m using Xpadder and I honestly play my melee classes better with a gamepad than without. Even my elementalist works fine with it (dagger elementalist). About the only class I’ve had issue with is grenade Engineer due to the large amount of ground targeting with mob leading (‘nades aren’t just on the spot, you have to lead carefully and quickly, and mouse control ground targeting is a little clunky on the gamepad).

Don’t forget, this isn’t just a “this is better” argument. There are people who suffer from RSI, Tendonitis, and Carpal Tunnel syndrome who seriously benefit from the use of a gamepad over mouse and keyboard. It’s a quality of life issue for some.

Edit – I’m going to go ahead and plug my own controller configuration (using xpadder 5.3 free version) here as well for those who might prefer it or be concerned about using AutoHotKey.

It implements all skill abilities, movement, dodge, camera zoom, calling and taking targets, nearest, next, previous target, mouse turning on right stick, and the ability to control cursor for ground targeting. Hope this helps people as well.

Defensive stat stacking: toughness or vitality?

Alright, so general consensus is to balance the two stats and if in doubt, vitality is generally better.

I desperately need help...can't stop dying

Tomkatt.1684

Okay, I’m just gonna say it: I suck at warrior.

My main is a guardian, and I’ve become pretty reliant on the defensive capabilities of my Aegis heavy build.

On my warrior I am getting murdered on a fairly regular basis in PvE content at my level. I’ve tried Mace+sword for the two counters, I’ve tried mace plus shield for the block and stun combat (not bad), but in the end I’ve currently settled for rifle+greatsword. I pretty much kite single target until it gets to melee, knock it back with rifle 5, and if it’s not dead by then, use greatsword to finish it off.

I’d prefer to play a more melee oriented build, but it seems fighting a single target at range is the only way I manage to stay alive.

On my guardian I’m super-tanky, so fighting 3-5 enemies at a time is a fairly normal concept for me, and I have a build set up that’s oriented toward surviving this sort of encounter, but I can’t seem to work out a similar setup on my warrior. I really want some stun heavy / blocking / countering, or generally defensively suited melee combat where I can survive up close.

Can anyone help with this? And if this style isn’t suited for Warrior, can anyone give me some general tips on how to survive melee?

Thanks!

How is the Guardians Damage?

Speccing a guardian for pure damage is a waste of time. That’s not to say it can’t be done, it can. It just negates your greatest strengths as a support character; guardian brings a ton of utility to the table, and this shouldn’t be ignored.

You want pure damage and nothing else, roll a warrior and use signets.

I think you’re missing the point. The block stuff syncs with Aegis. Every Aegis removed counts as a block. These are good traits, as with Aegis at half health, your F-key Aegis, Retreat, and the mace/focus blocks, you can build a stacks of might very quickly and maintain them over a decently long period of time. You’ll also notice this syncs up with the mace use in general.

Underwater needs boosting hard.

Tomkatt.1684

Guardian is flawed and puny underwater, while the rest classes got at least 4-5 dmg skills, we got only one – and mediocre one too.
With trident u can combo 2,3,5 skills which are nice and u can get almost half the damage as a single warrior skill underwater. And with spear which is the decent weapon of them two – u can get as much as half the dmg of ele, quarter the dmg of the thief and fifth the dmg of a war. And this is only if u shine with skill and gear.

We all know the programmers at arenanet made such a sloppy work with the underwater content, which is at best – boring, slow and buggy. However ur artists did great, and its a beautiful world down there.
So how about shaping up and fixing your mess, couse such a great artwork is utterly wasted by poorly execution.

I think you’re just doing it wrong. The spear skills are powerful and on short cooldowns, and the trident skills provide a good bit of control. Underwater doesn’t need boosting, I’d say you probably just need to skill up a bit and remember to use your utilities underwater as well.

Can we get an option for better quality JPG compression or maybe PNG format for screenshots?

Right now there’s no real in-between option for screenshots. Either I can take a really poor quality JPG screenshot with a small filesize, or I can take a high quality BMP screenshot but save a huge file on my HDD.

Could we get an option for better JPG compression for higher quality screenshots at a lower filesize, and maybe the option for saving in PNG format for those of us who’d like to edit them? PNG would be particularly nice, being a compressed but lossless format.

The underwater rocket boot issue for engineers

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Tomkatt.1684

Just wondering about the issue with rocket boots launching you into the sky.

Wouldn’t the rocket boot issue be due to the 3-dimensionality of water travel? They’re designed to launch you backward I thought, and when facing down in water, a vertical launch is “backward.” Couldn’t it be solved by forcing it to launch only horizontally? Or would that cause land terrain issues?

Disclaimer – I don’t fully understand the mechanics of rocket boots, I haven’t played an engineer long enough to get them, hence posting here and asking. :P

Level 45, question regarding Zeal vs. Honor 15 point

quick question, might be silly. for the burning on aegis removal, it says burn nearby foes when an aegies you applied is removed. does the passive automatic aegis from the virtue or courage apply? since i’m not “actively applying” it.

and so far, i don’t have anything in Zeal either. is it beneficial to have Power as a guardian? seems many guardians actually run without any put into zeal. but i do like using symbols so 15 points might be useful, then again, i see other traits being more effective. decisions, decisions!

Re: burning on Aegis, yes, the passive one counts. It’s for any Aegis you apply.

Re: Zeal, I find the first 10 points useful for the burning on Aegis block and a bit of damage boost, but even that is up for debate. AFAIK it’s only worth adding to if you’re making heavy use of spirit weapons.

Question for Anet: Any plans to fix Leap of Faith (greatsword skill 4)?

in Guardian

Posted by: Tomkatt.1684

Tomkatt.1684

Not the damage component or anything else. The elevation issue. Any time you’re even remotely higher than the mob or enemy it misses, even if you’re slightly uphill on a slope. This isn’t an issue with the foe dodging. It will miss at a higher elevation 100% of the time.

Actually, the skill seems to work better in general if you’re downhill from an enemy, better than even at equal elevation.

But yeah, this should probably be looked at, it’s ridiculously annoying to land right on an enemy, appear to hit, and see “miss” just because you started a foot an a half above your foe.

Is it powerful enough to be useful?

dodge roll heal is good if youre going to invest 30 in honor. Regardless go for the 15 zeal only if you have a reason to go past 10 in zeal, like going spirit weapons style.

I’ve got 10 in Zeal for the burning on Aegis removal, but I think I’ll leave it at that given everything I’ve read.

Haha you stopped at 47 on your main too huh?

Nah, that’s just where I’m up to now. I started a main up to 10 or 15, then started alting, rolled all 5 character slots, played each a few levels, then back to the main, and so forth. Currently playing my main (Norn Guardian), and have been for probably 15 or so levels, but might switch back to my Sylvari Elementalist or Human Warrior for a bit. Probably the elementalist, for a change of pace (love the dual dagger gameplay on that class).

Why the hammer shouldnt be faster

Honestly, I like the hammer, I don’t think it needs much in the way of changing. In fact, I think the 1 skill chain is fine, for me #5 is the issue. I wish it had either a mild damage component, or if not, maybe a slightly longer duration.

Unless your going for a spirit weapon build there is really no reason to go beyond 10 points into zeal. I say this because other then spirit weapon traits most all of its major & minor traits are sub par compared to other lines.

The only exceptions are binding jeopardy & firey wrath.

Also I feel like I should let you know that symbolic exposure has the possibility to be decent but generally isn’t because at max the vulnerability applied only lasts about 3 seconds.

The only exception to this rule that I can think of would be if your playing a hammer – scepter build and have firey wrath & binding jeopardy as your major traits & signet of wrath as one of your utilities.
That would allow you do decent damage and keep up around 3 vulnerability stacks

Edit: if doing that you could go all the way into zeal & also grab zealous blade or greatsword power as they both effect maces now as well.
Then you could go 20 points into honor for the dodge roll heal & 2 handed mastery.

BTW the dodge roll heal is great at max level, at +450 healing it heals for around 500 for me & if you were to stack more healing power with crit & one of those sigils of energy you could do quite a bit of dodge roll healing.

I play mace+focus and greatsword or hammer. With the mace and GS, I have a decent choice of symbols on short cooldowns on my #2 skills.

Just wondering, which would be more beneficial overall? I’ve currently got 15 in Honor for the dodge roll heal. Seems mildly useful even though it only heals for about 150 right now.

I’m wondering would it be more effective to take Symbolic Exposure in the Zel tree instead to apply vulnerability to foes?

Overwhelming Threat Issues

in Guardian

Tomkatt.1684

You need to work on your survivability. Greatsword is great but pair it with mace+focus on your other set, swap and hit 3 at sign of trouble. Also, 5 points in the Virtues tree is a great thing, particularly paired with Renewed focus and “Retreat!” you can keep aegis and block up over a ton of hits, and the focus shield gives you 5 seconds/3 hits invulnerability on top of this.

You shouldn’t be feeling squishy unless you’ve gone glass cannon.

Pair all of those Aegis skills with 10 points in Honor for skill 6 (Aegis heals on removal) and Valor 5 point skill Valorous defense (free Aegis at 50% health) and you’ll be a happy camper.

Heck, I only wish I could generate more aggro, I like to protect my allies and block and dodge my way out of trouble whenever possible.

Greatsword feels mandatory for questing

in Guardian

Posted by: Tomkatt.1684

Tomkatt.1684

All those posts about this weapon being ‘support’ and that being for ‘tanking’ or whatever – forget about them. You’ll only need greatsword/sword+focus combo. And you will use sword/focus only to survive/run away. Greatsword has highest damage, huge AoE from auto-attack, AoE pull, AoE symbol and AoE blind.

It goes like this: run in the middle of 3-5 mobs, Pull them, Purging flames, leap, symbol, Virtue of Justice, whirl, 3 auto-attack hits, collect phat lootz, pull next mob pack.

Saying to forget about everything but GS really just isn’t playing the class to the best of it’s ability in my opinion. Personally I run GS but I also use Sword/Torch and Sword/Focus (when I want the extra blind and survivability instead of DPS) and constantly switch up in battle. I couldn’t imagine playing the class only using GS. If I wanted to use one weapon only, I would still be playing my Ranger. lol

A lot of people using only or mainly the greatsword i beleave pribally play more of the glass cannon builds. As such they have no need for the more support/control side of our class. A shame as thats where we really do shine.

This. I find the GS is great for glass cannon play, but as I’m getting up in the high 30’s I’ve found other weapons to be a better choice. Don’t get me wrong, GS is great, but I think lacks support options overall, it’s a tradeoff for the mobility on skill 4 and the pile on for 5 → 3.

The hammer may be adequate as a utility tool for situations. But for people who prefer it as a main weapon just because they like hammers instead of blades, the hammer is horrible to use.

It’s good, but it’s horrible? I take it you mean it’s horrible at what you would like it to do. Unfortunately, the way the game is set up is to have certain weapons capable of doing certain tasks (including being jack of ll trades). This fits in nicely with the concept of choosing what role you want to play. To choose your role you pick your traits, your gear, your utilities, and your weapon. It isn’t just like this with the guardian, but every class. Some weapons are just more suited for the control role, some condition damage, some direct damage, and some support. The hammer happens to be the go to weapon for control (immobilize, ward, and knockback give it three control skills, no other weapon on the guardian allows for this). I suppose they could heavily redo the game design and make no weapon suitable for any role, and then have your traits decide what your weapons do, but that’s probably not the changes they had in mind for patches.

I would not mind the hammer being a more lethal DPS weapon if specced into the Zeal line, but not at a cost to its control options.

Yes it is horrible. That disgusting delay you get on your first chain attack is enough to discourage you from ever using a hammer normally. Unless you are going for the utility skills for specific situations or just want to use it for yucks for 5 minutes or so, there isn`t any other reason to like the hammer. I would love to to use 2handed hammers because it`s my playstyle and preference but unless you like launching bunnies like the one dude does, it really isn`t a fun or practical weapon to use.

I hope you aren’t being serious. Stop speaking nosense, what’s the point of a FAST HAMMER? The hammer is made for being quite “slow and massive” and it gives perfectelly the feeling so, please, stop with your nosensingness.

Nonsense? every guardian I see uses a greatsword. If the hammer was so awsome you would see more people using it. Only new players use it for a few lvls until they get thier hands on a greatsword and wonder wtf they were using a hammer for. The hammer is a tactical weapon whereas all the other weapons can be used as a fulltime weapon with no problems or complaints.

If the hammer had a better 1 chain you would see more people using it. But for the most part since you can only slot two weapons, most people run a melee/ranged setup so they can kite when they need to. You are pretty much only going to see hammer users in group pvp. You won`t see too many people questing or grinding using a hammer because it isn`t practical or fun. Think about it also, if the hammer was fine and dandy, Anet wouldn`t be revamping the thing.

I use hammer pretty consistently in PVE, have been since level 30 or so, now level 39.

I think a lot of people don’t know how to use it, but a hammer of equal stat with Greatsword will actually put out more damage than the greatsword, and has some good control utility. I think people are just afraid to give up the mobility the GS provides.

Greatswords are fine for glass cannons, but the hammer definitely has potential, I often pair it with a mace and focus and nuke things with all the retaliation light fields (and fire with purging flames).

Plus, while the Hammer is slow, it pairs extremely well with “Retreat!” for 20 seconds of swiftness and boosted player and attack speed.

3. Gap closer, This weapon needs something to get you in melle, the binding chain shot isnt doing it. Yes its handy to keep people in melle, but its very easy to be kited by anything. And you cant intiate with it because as soon as you enter combat your running slower. Suggestions: Well as i see it, i would do 1 of two things. Im looking at both warrior hammer and lightning hammer, They both have atleast 1 leap with the hammer. I feel the guardian hammer is in desperate need of this leap as well. Whether or not i would change mighty blow to have a leap effect and increase the CD (this would imply that the 3 skills cast time gets reduced so hammer can function with a longer CD) Or replace Zealot’s embrace with a imoblizeing flash/leap. Heck if the imoblize is too op even just a flash/leap that dealt a little damage or set them on fire would work just fine as well.

I must admit, I don’t have issue with the lack of closer. I use Judge’s Intervention and am a fan of opening with hammer 4 knockback and then hitting Judge and strolling to the prone, burning mob.

I do agree with the other issues though, and it wouldn’t hurt if skill 3 immobilized and pulled you to mob, kind of like how Elementalist Earth Dagger skill 3 pulls you in.

I do love the hammer though, especially paired with mace and focus. Some nice, highly defensive gameplay there.

Wouldn’t it be easier to just set your PC’s power management to “High Performance?” In high performance mode the CPU never throttles and downclocks. This just seems a bit more convoluted when power management profiles are built right into Windows.

The instructions in this thread are related to the GPU, not the CPU. Adjusting Windows Power Profiles will not affect GPU behavior (save for PCI-E LSPM which should always be set OFF on a desktop PC).

Also, just changing the Power Profile to “High Performance” will not disable hardware-level CPU throttling features such as C-States, etc. so you could very well still see CPU throttling at the High Performance setting if your BIOS isn’t set up properly in the first place.

You’re right, there’s no GPU setting in Power management, but I’ve checked with CPU-Z in the past, in balanced mode my GPU speed gets throttled, but in high performance mode it does not throttle. Not sure why this is the case, but I do know it works.

Camera-related Issue Mega-thread

For all the complaints, let’s talk about something Anet got very right: Underwater camera!

  • When you are on the surface, the camera is above the surface and never goes under or cuts between.
  • When you’re underwater the camera is fully submerged and doesn’t breach the surface.

The camera is absolutely perfect when swimming and submerged. I feel that Anet really nailed this, and it’s been a gripe for me in several games now, with cameras getting stuck above the surface, or half under half out, and not providing a decent view when swimming.

So while I do have problems with the camera (particularly when doing Vistas it can go crazy in tight quarters), Anet really got right one camera issue that nearly every other MMO has gotten terribly wrong.

Hey folks! I posted this on reddit, but thought any non-redditors here might appreciate it. All Xbox360 gamepad controls are listed in the reference document below.

All files needed for Xpadder setup and documentation for controls are also included in the documentation. This is for the last free version of Xpadder, version 5.3. Updates have been made to include nearest target, camera zoom, and mouse turn speed (yes, to those who haven’t tried the previous configuration, this uses analog mouse turning on the right stick).

Also, there are separate configurations included for standard camera up and down look, and an inverted Y-axis one for those who prefer that.

The control scheme is also configured to the best of my ability to implement ground targeting for casters and engineers, though I must admit, it’s a lot easier to use for melee characters. If you can think of an improvement for the ground targeting scheme, feel free to post here or PM me.

Xpadder configuration for Guild Wars 2

Hope you enjoy it!

Edit – Feel free to download a copy of the reference in the format of your choosing via “File” and then “download as.” Please be aware, however, that any later updates to profile file links won’t be updated on your local copy if changes are made at a later date (since the profile needs to be reuploaded and the link changes if I make changes).

Also, here’show to change the mouse turning/emulation speed. I figured I’d post it here so everyone can tweak it to their liking if they want to.

In xpadder click the direction you want to change, then click the wrench, and there will be a mouse emulation speed slider.

I’ve included screenshots below. Be sure to back up the profile file in case anything gets messed up.

Step one: http://i.imgur.com/TfMeM.png

Step two: http://i.imgur.com/vmuCS.png

Step 3: http://i.imgur.com/A7ecP.png

When done, close the windows with the ‘x’ in the corner, there’s no save prompt. Do this for each direction on set 1 and 2, then save the profile once you confirm it’s as you like it.

IMPORTANT! In-game, map your nearest target command to shift+T. I forgot this isn’t mapped by default. Same goes for mapping quick turn to ‘x’.
