Yet another post from someone whos not even in the top 1000% telling people whove played over 4000 tourneys that thieves arent as op as we think this is why the game is how it is, anet are listinging to people like you and not listening to people like Lordrosky, he has 3 accounts that have been number one in solo que, a really good win ratio only reason people dont listen to him is because hes angry at how the game is progressing or not as the case may be, thats passion about this game Anet are ignoring, hes the best necro in the game and he knows what hes talkin about, hes one of the only people who dont say biased opinions all he wants is this game to get balanced, people like you need to stop posting your useless and always outdated opinions and leave it to people who know whats going on, oh and btw i said 3 months ago pistol whip was op, noone believed me and now look what happened.

I’ve been running a power PU build with staff + scepter/torch and the Phantasmal warlock alone can hit enemies for up to 7k… I don’t see how people think that it’s not good for damage.

It’s not that the phantasm isn’t good for damage but everything else isn’t going to help you in a power build offensively.

This is pretty much true. I really only start by creating a few clones to cast winds of chaos for cover conditions, drop chaos storm to build my might stacks, summon warlock, and swap to scepter/torch for sustained DPS/Kiting.

[Thief] Interrupts - Maybe a bit broken?

Honestly the cries for thief nerfs are getting over the top. We’re almost as bad as rangers with recent nerfs, and for some reason we’re seeing more QQ. Hammer warriors already counter thieves very well with the lack of stability, and a thief already loses initiative, essentially putting the skill on cooldown. The thing about initiative is that it teaches one to manage it and when you’ve run out, you’re essentially dead.

Keep constant pressure on the thief, and force him to blow his initiative. Interrupts are a part of this process, and dodging/invuln/blind also cost the full initiative of the skill. If a thief spams, he’s out of the fight and you’ve got the opportunity to get the kill. The trick to fighting thieves is through attrition, which is the entire point of initiative. If you want to make this change to thieves, you’ve got to give them access to copious amounts of stability rather than blindly nerfing them because you refuse to L2P.

Trying to defend thief in its current state is kittening stupid. We are OP, stop trying to deny it.

Maybe you should explain “OP” in a more elaborate description rather than throwing blanket statements around. Yes: one particular set is OP in a certain situation. This does NOT mean that you nerf the entire class. I’m sorry, OP, but your suggestion would be worse than when ANet changed revealed from 3s to 4s and quickly reverted it outside of PvP due to the backlash. Thieves simply lack the defense to deal with having cooldowns when interrupted. My arguments were “real”, despite what you think, and the “L2P” portions only covered part of my statements.

What I find more broken in that video is that said thief interrupting you can do so 3-4 times in a row.

Warrior,Mesmer,Thief,Elementalist,Engineer etc can you interupted 4+ in a row no only Thief.

1) Learn the mechanics of this game
2)Now you are qualified to write on the forum

Learn to not be stupid for once. All those classes in order to interrupt 3-4 times have to choose weapons that are only good for that, suck offensively, and in general those builds are not viable and have much longer cooldowns than a thief interrupting.

Tell me which viable ele spec can easily interrupt attack from range several times and still burst people down.

Thief has to choose offhand pistol and/or trait 30 into trickery, losing out on a ton of defense to do so. Your point is still moot. If you’re tired of being interrupted by a thief, grab some reflects. Instead of whining about a class, learn to counter them and build around that counter concept.

Oh poor thieves, having to choose their strongest offhand weapon.

All classes obviously have copious amounts of reflection and plenty of utility slots to fit it in place of the already mandatory utilities they need to survive since they dont get their burst and defense gifted to them on their weaponsets unlike black powder and backstab.

How about we ban you from playing thief and force you to play ele and mesmers and non-bunker rangers against thieves as your sole pvp experience. Let’s see how that “learn to counter” tune of yours last.

I guess people also learn to counter the absurd warriors signet too, somehow.

Funny enough, I play all 3 of those in PvP with much success. Ranger offhand axe has a traited 1200 range pull on a 12s CD with skill 5 being a very long reflect which can be manually canceled. I’ve also been playing a power staff mesmer who’s Phantasmal warlock hits enemies for up to 7k every 5 seconds with plenty of reflects, and my ele as a support S/F with projectile blocks and invuln. Thieves have never been a problem for me on those classes and it’s because I know how thieves work. I haven’t played my thief on a regular basis in several months due to the amount of QQ you get no matter what you play, but I’ll still defend the class, because it’s a major L2P issue.

Hey Mark! I’ve been looking for some place to ask these types of questions, so thank you for the inlet.

I’ve worked as a 3D Character and Environment artist for the past 4 years sporadically as a freelancer on Indy games such as Project Divine, Rin (unreleased) and many “hobbyist”-made games via game-artist.net’s volunteer and contract work projects that never made it to fruition. My questions will revolve around both working in-house and more specifically the 3D character and prop design department.

  1. What is it like working in-house as opposed to freelance in the game industry?
  2. How would you compare working at ArenaNet as opposed to past companies you’ve worked for, and is the high-end portion of the industry as volatile as it’s made out to be?
  3. Does ArenaNet charge per use for the candy dispensers?
  4. Coffee.
  5. Alright, more serious now. This is for the design department: What is the learning curve if one already has extensive knowledge of zBrush and Mudbox, Maya, AfterEffects, Photoshop, and the smaller 3D design aid tools such as nDo2, UVLayout, and WorldMachine for one to find ease of access with the in-house proprietary software, and how long does it usually take for a new hire to learn said software?
  6. This may be a bit touchy and I don’t expect a straight answer or, any answer at all, but what is the pay scale like for 3D artists working at the studio? I’ve talked with several devs in-game who all told me that my asking wage was perhaps too low (I’d rather not disclose it here, for obvious reasons. Thanks for putting up with me!)
  7. Like Angel McCoy started out, do you ever hire freelancers to do work for the game prior to actual hire?
  8. What is the art department looking for in a portfolio? I’ve been building it up for some time now in order to someday apply for a position at what I’ve heard is one of the best companies in the industry (ArenaNet, of course!), but every time I look back on my past works I never feel that my content is good enough to meet the expectations of the company, despite what my friends, past employers and random citizens say.

Thanks so much, and I completely understand if you don’t get back to me! I work the night shift at a restaurant and typed most of this up on my break, so I apologize if the pacing seems a little off. (Get to sleep if you’re reading this at the time of posting! I’m on your time zone too o_o)

The Codex Arena - "Sealed Deck" style PvP

in PvP

Posted by: Viking Jorun.5413

Viking Jorun.5413

Many players seem to be taking a harsh attitude towards meta builds and what they deem cheese, so I’d like to propose that ArenaNet start taking steps to introduce a Codex Arena, similar to that of GW1.

The premise of the Codex is to only allow certain skills and traits to be used each week in order to force build variety and act to fill that gap for players who want nothing to do with the TeamQ/SoloQ metas. It essentially picks skills and traits to remove pseudo-randomly, and band certain skills/traits from the Codex entirely. Additionally, only one of each class is allowed per team, making stacked teams impossible.

Thoughts?

How is pistol whip op?

in PvP

Posted by: Viking Jorun.5413

Viking Jorun.5413

I’ll keep saying it until you people get it: Pistol Whip is S/P’s Heartseeker. It’s already been nerfed to the ground since launch and only recently got a minor after cast fix, which somehow made it OP. New players will spam it since it’s easy to get kills off, especially in team fights where you’re being pressured from outside sources. Once counterplay is learned, the populous will only cry about it every once in a while and still call every S/P thief a “pistol whip spammer” regardless of if he used it in a fight or not. You people describing skill rotations obviously don’t play thief all too much, because apparently we aren’t limited by this thing called initiative (5 seconds is a long time. How’d you like to be dazed for that long during a fight? Didn’t think so), have 0s weapon swap cooldowns, and aftercasts don’t affect our interrupts or the next skill queued. It’s laughable, people attempting to discuss how a fight will go. When I do run zerk S/P, I rarely if ever get a full combo off on someone. The last person I did get one off on, was rank 12 playing in a Team Queue match where the majority of players were rank 30+, and I’m pretty sure went afk the entire fight. Some warriors are running Spiked Armor to combat this, and it’s effective, believe it or not. Guardians will pop retal and melt a pistol whip thief. Mesmers can start using focus and stack 100% retal uptime, and immobilizes and interrupts when you see the thief going through the ~0.9s aftercast and cast between pistol whips will ruin him. I love swapping to my warrior, running healing signet, endure pain, and spiked armor, and watching pistol whip thieves destroy themselves. Running longbow and catching them in a 6s immobilize and kiting behind them to avoid their teleports is one of the most satisfying things one can do.

The issue is that a new meta is arising for the thief class which very well counters the current meta, and people refuse to adapt to counter it back. I posted “the anti-meta” build prior to the December 10th patch and it didn’t gain popularity until recently. Please: I urge you to try different builds to counter it first, before you QQ, rather than going straight to the forums after you die to an S/P thief and cry to ANet that pistol whip needs nerfs. Removing any part of the skill would break the set entirely.

Re: Pistol Whip

I’ve played thief since this time last year, prior to that I played warrior. I’m currently in the top 500 for Team Queue leaderboards and had to wait a while to post this without letting my personal bias or emotions get in the way.

When I first started thief, I played an S/P build. This was post-quickness nerf and it was no longer considered viable for nearly a year, up until the December balance patch when one after cast changed, guaranteeing two whole hits rather than one. Suddenly, there’s outrage on the forums and pistol whip is OP. I don’t necessarily play a glassy S/P build like most people and play the set more as it’s intended: as a sustained damage weapon, rather than burst.

To get to the point, I feel that people don’t know what they’re talking about, and here’s why: Back on the subject of Quickness, another change was made to the critical strikes traits that made critical haste far more reliable, and herein lies the issue, NOT in pistol whip itself (which is finally in a good place after being laughable for nearly a year). Now that Critical Haste has a 25% chance for 2 seconds of quickness on critical hits, pairing with pistol whip has a guaranteed chance to proc said trait, which is when the real burst and spamability comes in, coupled with rapid use of the thief’s teleportation skills. A thief can burst with pistol whip using this trait every 30 seconds.

I see a few options you could do to solve this without decimating the S/P set altogether:

  • Nerf Critical Haste back down to a 10% chance to trigger on crit
  • Make pistol whip only 4 attacks as it appears visually, rather than 9, decreasing it’s ability to proc Critical Haste (however, be sure to equalize the damage of the 4 attacks with the current 9 hits, or perhaps make Pistol Whip like Hundred Blades, and backload the damage so that it’s more punishing if a thief fails to get every hit off onto the opponent).
  • Decrease the critical damage modifier on pistol whip, retaining it’s integrity on sustained damage builds while reducing its burst capability on glass cannon thieves.
  • Reduce the quickness duration that Critical Haste gives from 2 seconds to 1. This will only allow the thief to finish his current pistol whip so that he cannot continue to spam it one to two more times (depending on time of proc during the first pistol whip), and rather is forced out of his “frenzy”, so to speak, and encourages skilled gameplay.

Take into note that S/P is an all-or-nothing set, and those running glass will find themselves dead after a failed rotation with nowhere to run and their initiative completely decimated. Against skilled players, the precast is easily visible (however, perhaps the precast for the stun itself should be slightly longer and more obvious), and a single dodge can ruin the entire rotation. It’s the sword equivalent of spamming Heartseeker, which many also complain about. I hope that you can see it from a slightly different perspective and do look at the consequences for whatever nerfs you decide to go with, because 90% of these suggestions would put the set right back where it started.

Thank you,
Glïnt

It’s when people try to infiltrator’s arrow through walls, onto ground from atop buildings (or vice versa), etc. If you understand how shadowsteps work, you’ll have a much better time.

What ? PW has two phase

2)Sword attack with +- 1 sec evade

Wrong.

Pistol whip has two phase:

1. Downing glassy enemies by spamming 3.
2. Blind stomp them.

Does it cost to respond to your stupid post?

It doesn’t cost anything to hear what PW thieves do.

Also, you obviously have no idea what thieves do. The autoattack has the same overall DPS as Pistol whip and can upkeep 100% crippled and weakness, shutting down nukers and burst classes. Any good thief who uses S/P is and will be insulted by being accused of spamming 3 (which everyone does, even when you only used it once – at the opportune moment – because they don’t know what they’re talking about and will look for any outlet to blame for them losing to an S/P thief).

1. Daze for 1/2 second when hit from the front
2. Stun for 1/2 second when hit from the side or behind

Why no but 6 initiative cost is so dumb, S/P thies has only one DMG spell (PW) with less DPS as AA other spec has CaD,Backstab,HS,SH etc

But this will not solve anything =) Many Thiefs start play P/P and you start see many crying topic like a " P/P THIEF IS SO OP NERF ARENANET"

Issue w/ PW isn’t the dmg, which is in a good spot, it’s how well it shuts down opponents while doing that dmg, by making it daze from the front, people can still immediately move out of it, so that you would need to be behind or on the side to reliable get the dmg off, this makes the spec less punishing and increasing the ini cost helps reduce it’s spammability while still keeping it viable, imo.

As for people complaining about P/P specs… i doubt it.

The stun is so short that, even with Sigil of Paralyzation, the thief is only guaranteed two hits. React faster if you’re dying to it because of the stun, or turn off melee assist, and just walk through the thief and avoid his entire next pistol whip as well as the rest of the hits from the last PW.

This is very true, coming from someone who was an advocate for S/P to make a comeback for a long time. I feel that, in separating the skill into two, it would lead to more skillful play, such as Stun + Infiltrator’s Strike + Flurry/Evade for maximum hits. That’s only one example, and in reality sword for thief is a very complicated and over-simplified weapon in the minds of the masses. There is no rotation to follow, and it a highly situational set to play.

Yes, this is the solution. Nerf all the teleports. That’ll balance the thief for sure! /sarcasm.

Do you people think before you type? I mean – do you think of all of the possible applications of your suggestion and how they might affect every other aspect of the thief? Pistol Whip burst thief may be easy to play, and it’s quite gimmicky, but so is Killshot warrior (whom you won’t see coming 1500 units away while fighting his team mates on point), Fresh Air Ele, and phantasm burst Mes. They all die if you fart in their general direction, and rarely do any top-tier teams take these due to the above mentioned fact. They lend little to no benefit in actual roaming, and face it: the only time you die to one is fighting them with the pressure of one or more of their team mates. You people also don’t know what the thief meta is, apparently, because it’s still D/P trickery burst. The closest thing the S/P set has to meta is a 10/30/0/0/30 trickery build running a soldier’s amulet and barbarian’s jewel, making you hit for only 3-4k pistol whips if you’re lucky, and actually playing the set as intended rather than spamming 3 (which you’ll be accused of when playing S/P anyway). Good opponents will know exactly when the pistol whip evade ends and capitalize on that frame, since the thief is still rooted. If you’ve got a burst against a full zerk pistol whip thief, hit them at the end of that frame after you’ve figured it out and they’ll die instantly.

Pistol-whip isn’t a problem by itself, its only when its-precast and one of the million shadowsteps are used to get incredible cleave damage with no risk as you are evading 80% of the animation. Without all the shadowsteps available, pistol-whip is much more balanced.

During a Game of WvW... With TURRETS...

Thumper turrets needs knockdown not knockback. Then it would be really useful with bombs. Otherwise it just pushes outside your range and your group gets annoyed.

I agree, I use it for the blast on water/fire mostly. Other than the stun break, I don’t use it as intended I would say. I like Rifle, BK, and Elixir B so TT really helps make up some blast I lose by taking rifle over p/s….in my power bombs build at least.

This would be detrimental to my PvP build. I have a full bar of turrets, and use Accelerant Packed Turrets to shove people off point. Thumper turret is one of two launches I have, and the best one at that, since it isn’t canceled by an enemy moving behind or to the side of me.

The only tip you need right now: Play decap.

That’s all I’ve been doing (but it’s nowhere near the rifle/ft decap meta right now. In fact I don’t even use kits, and quite frankly I think it’s more effective)

…and I have to say, it’s definitely one of the most fun classes out there. After a couple of hours fiddling in the mists and hotjoin I got a build down, hopped into TeamQ and went from 35% on the leaderboards to rank 474 in 5 hours. The only match I lost was one in which a warrior decided to afk. I’m not saying the class is OP in any way – I feel that it is quite balanced – and in playing somewhat of a decap build I found myself enjoying PvP a lot more. I’m not necessarily tanky so on top of my CC I still can dish out some damage and take down other bunkers, and MM power necros GG, but even in dying I found that if I could keep the decap for greater than 20 seconds (which is very short – most of the time I could keep the point decapped and even capped the majority of each round) I’m denying the opposing team at least 75% of their points (20 seconds -5pts for stomping me). It’s definitely the class I’ll be playing for PvP, and I don’t seem to get frustrated at all when bested since I know that I’m still helping my team.

Any tips I should know that I haven’t already figured out? If you see an engineer named Quaggington, feel free to give me a shout!

Turret Skins.

No, it’s much easier to recognize, “oh hey that’s the Thumper Turret. I better get away so I’m not launched” with one skin rather than needing to remember 5 skins for each turret (and more with future races), which would be redundant.

Diversify Rifle Animations?

I personally like the animations. I’m just waiting for my Plated Sniper Rifle skin to transfer over to PvE so I can actually use it somewhere (rifle in PvP.. Hah!).

Stealth and its flaw

in Thief

Viking Jorun.5413

I encourage most organized teams to run a Killshot warrior in their group to deal with thieves. 2 channeled bursts, one of which does ~10k and the other up to ~25k. It makes group roaming so much easier without having to deal with a single thief thinking they can take us on. If you embrace the fact that these types of skills channel and counter stealth directly, you’ll be a much better player. Thieves can do this too, with skills like unload, sneak attack, and scorpion wire. In all honesty, canceling all channeled skills targeting a thief would be pretty OP, considering that channels and AoE are the only things keeping a thief down when trolling zergs.

I play these kinds of builds in my sleep, because I get bored with the meta too quickly.
Here’s a few of my builds that would fit you perfectly if you’re looking for something different:

I may add more builds in the future since not all of them are shared currently, but if you’re interested in any of the builds or have any questions, Red, feel free to let me know. I’ve tried covering nearly every aspect of the thief, and these are some of the builds I’ve picked from my monstrosity of a collection (1.5 years of wonky, crazy builds!) that I think would suit what you’re looking for.

EDIT: All of these builds are balanced in that you can easily port them over to PvP. Shortbus is hilariously fun for point bunkering, especially when running it with S/D as your secondary set.

Rifle or Bow?

in Warrior

Posted by: Viking Jorun.5413

Viking Jorun.5413

While I agree that longbow has far more utility than rifle, those of you claiming that longbow does more damage couldn’t be more wrong. Rifle AA hits for ~1500 per attack while LB hits for ~600 per projectile on a full exotic berserker (for explanation purposes). The rifle autoattack is also quicker than longbow and the projectiles fly much faster, which means that they can’t be sidestepped. Rifle 3 does ~9k on average while the longbow Arcing shot does roughly the same. The real difference lies in the burst skills. Longbow’s Smoldering Arrow is a slow moving projectile with a 1200 range which creates a 900-radius fire field on impact, and does moderate damage (~1k per tick post-nerf, plus burning damage), while the rifle burst can do up to 25k on the glossiest of targets, while averaging on 15k.

I feel that when I’m building with rifle in mind, it’s going to be the focus of my build and my primary weapon to use, while longbow is more a secondary weapon to swap to for kiting and escape punishing, but seldom finishes a foe off. I do have Kudzu, so I’m in no way biased against the longbow. Overall it’s a better weapon IMO, but rifle definitely has it’s niche. One thing to note is that after having played a rifle burst warrior for fun, I’ve discovered that the channeled bursts (Rapid Fire and Killshot) are extremely effective in taking down thieves due to channeled skills continuing to follow them in stealth. As long as you’ve got a Condi clear to remove blind/weakness, you should have no issues taking down thieves as a rifle burst warrior in group play. I call this roll the Thief Stopper. Every organized group should have one to save time and, after a while, all but the stupidest of thieves will avoid engaging your group.

Choose what you want, really. It’s all in preference and I personally am constantly swapping builds to fit the bill for how I’m playing. Just remember that you aren’t stuck to a single build for the duration of GW2, and it’s highly possible that you’ll have a lot of builds to swap between! In no way are rifle and longbow mutually exclusive to your experience as a warrior.

Rework stealth...

Oh, guess what? We get twelve of these threads every week, buddy. L2P, because people like you are ruining this class. We’re already at the bottom of the balance rungs with eles (who are getting buffed majorly on March 18, while we get nerfed more due to QQ like this), and this doesn’t help the case of balance. I bet you play a warrior, or even worse, a ranger. See signature for details. Come back when you reroll and start beating thieves.

Lol @ even worse a Ranger. Thieves are able to stealth/blindspam all day long. As a Ranger in full zerk, with 0 defense and 2k more health, I still win in fights without spamming either of those things. If I can win in fights without being invisible for 80% of it, so can you ( ; Maybe thieves are the ones that need to L2P.

Your argument is irrelevant. I run a stealthless build and own rangers like you all day. You’re probably one of many with a bear for a pet too.

Bearbow Rangers are idiots, sorry… The only benefit to a bear is their condition removal and that’s only a Brown Bear, besides that they’re garbage. Then again, most pets are…

Oh and good for you, you run stealthless. I bet that means either you Dagger Storm everyone to death or you’re a tanky thief, which doesn’t make “owning a Ranger like me” that hard because I would have less defense than you. Hence why I said “as a Ranger in full zerk.”

Wrong on both fronts. I hit pretty hard and run BV or Thieves Guild depending on who I’m fighting.
