Why Guild Wars 2 Legendaries aren’t Legendary.
The original set were poorly designed for acquisition. The very first one that sold on the trading post made it only an expensive, non prestigious skin to me. I’ve never bothered to try for one.
They are no longer rare. They are certainly not unique with every other person having one and the only hard to obtain part is the Legendary RNG for the precursor.
Not the best link to post. The author’s points are so outdated its laughable.
Legendaries will still be the best skin to acquire, and if anything they may become more prestigious now that you can’t acquire the full thing through gems alone.
Bug exploits are bug exploits. It’s a reportable offense IMO. As Miku, said he’s taking advantage of something that shouldn’t be there.
Or maybe they’re not evil manipulators, and they do have things reasonably far along, but they’ve been burned by announcing things as subject to change that then do change and everyone says “But you saaaaaaid.”
I said in another post of mine I’ll sit back and wait for Specializations to hit. But the information players are seeking is top-level type information, and that shouldn’t be an issue to release. After all, this information was drafted, polished, discussed, refined and discussed some more before moving into production.
Second, the “meta” builds. I totally understand them. As a game that was touted as getting rid of the “trinity”, all I can see is that they ended up removing 2 of the 3 pillars in that trinity. It’s all about DPS. If you aren’t 100% dps, your doing it wrong. To make matters worse, this meta has made classes like necromancer almost useless by design and yet there has been no effort put into making a necro relevant outside of WvW zergs.
I agree with your points. They were well thought out and constructive. Wanted to touch on the meta. Anet moved away from the trinity, but didn’t replace it with anything viable. I didn’t realize how “off” the system was until I made a Necromancer. I can’t tell you how many dungeon parties kicked me upon joining because of my class. It got so bad I started entering the instance before starting a group.
Hopefully condition builds can finally take the forefront.
I think most of us can agree on the fact HoT has some making up to do, and we’re anxious to see what that entails. By going off how Mike O’Brien presented HoT’s announcement at PAX Anet feels the same way. Heart of Thorns has to be a home run. Anything less will be seen as a dissapointed compounded with the fact they halted the short but entertaining LS releases.
I’m giving Anet the benefit of the doubt with specializations. Whether they decide to reveal the other subprofessions or not before release just make sure they are complete and bug free.
I’m sure the time it takes to make the Carpace armor they could dole out five outfits, but they’re just not the same quality.
I’ve been playing a condition build since release and love it. Yeah it needs tweaking and buffing but I have always felt that I am contributing and have been told as much from the people I have played with. It’s also great solo. The only time it’s a hindrance is in boss zergs which are broke as crap anyway, unless you call 30+ players standing in one spot spamming ranged skills fun.
Point being conditions are far from useless, your just caught up in the DPS meta mentality that can be quite easily ignored.
Well said. I run conditions on my warrior and love it.
My Character was named Peta File, and I could not log in this character until I changed the name. Please explain the difference of my name to paedophile? I am disappointed and had no option but to do this. GW2 has a violence, drinking, swearing tag, and the whole purpose is to run around killing things. I don’t get it, to me this is the most pathetic thing that I have encountered so far, we are supposed to be adults, and their are a lot of names out their that are tounge in cheek which I enjoy, but really, in light of what this game is all about I find this totally unacceptable.
Why even try to name your character that? If you can’t think of any names to use in a fantasy setting go to Yafnag.com . Their system has endless names and can even be customized. Obviously you were trying to be edgy by using a term associated with really bad people, but this would have been flagged in every map you go. It’s just not right.
I’m concerned that with precursor crafting, legendary weapons will lose the exclusivity and prestige associated with them. Part of the allure of such weapons for some players is that they are rare, unique, hard to obtain, and that there aren’t that many of them. The old system has many drawbacks, but one advantage is that by controlling the precursor drop rate, the prevalence of legendary weapons can be controlled. If the drop rate of precursors is %0.01, then only the top %99.99 richest (or luckiest) players will have a certain legendary. A similar principle exists in PvP, where only the top x players on the leaderboard are awarded with mini llamas or glorious hero’s armor. Does anyone else share my concern?
No. I feel everyone should have an equal chance to enjoy GW2’s nicest weaponry. The journey to craft the precursors should be arduous and present a strong, rewarding feeling afterward. Legendaries have never been exclusive anyways. The ability to farm the gold to buy a precursor has been there. Granted its not the fastest method, but its how I attained mine.
This reply is pretty late in the game, but if 5 players enter Victory or Death can we expect a tougher Zhaitan fight? I’d be happy to face the dragon at full strength if his powers are scaled up now.
Forums in the recent past: Stop giving us recycled content!!!
Forums now: Just give us recycled content!!!
Lol. It matters not what ArenaNet does…it will be wrong.
Compare the Living Story to a running TV show’s webisodes aired during the offseason. They are smaller, usually tell a shorter story arc, but keep you engaged with the world for a time. Battlestar Galactica and The Walking Dead did this well.
When you put the LS into that perspective you can see why having smaller content releases during period of lull is much better to having nothing at all, but it’ll never be enough to replace what an expansion can bring.
Sure it was amusing for 10 minutes but it kitten annoying and they should have implemented a way to disable it.
This tool alone would have solved the problem for many, including myself. Let the players who wish to run around like airplanes do so for the duration of the game-state, but give others the option to revert back so we may enjoy the game ourselves.
I see no correlation at all between this fantasy game and reality.
Then you need to think a little harder before posting. Clearly Anet was inspired by the movie Titanic to recreate Kate Winslet’s pose. Guess where that movie was made? A Hollywood Studio. And where does that Hollywood studio reside? Reality!
The frustrating part is, Anet probably designed this day long before the crash happened, but they did not revisit the idea of releasing it. Had they done so the day might have turned out better for many.
Ways to disable them:
1. Airplane sounds
- Options > Sound Options > Slide Down dialogue volume
2. Movie grain (sepia overlay)
- Options > Graphic Options > Postprocessing > None (Low remove the sephia but keeps the the grain)
3. Aviator Helmet
- Use a costume brawl tonic/transformation potion and exit the transformation. This will revert your hair back to normal.
4. Other PC (player character) Models
- Options > Graphic Options > Character Model Quality > Lowest
5. Airplane Hand Position
Combat transformation changes your character look, including hands position.
If you find other methods of disabling the features, feel free to post em here.
Thanks for the constructive post. It shouldn’t be necessary to make such changes, but its good know.
Titanic wasn’t real… it was just a movie.
Seriously?
And you used to run around with your arms wide open and pretend you were an airplane?
And remember when you used to put down your arms and do something else?
Seriously, ANOTHER thread about this?!
Keep ‘em comin’. I just want a “Turn Off Events” button.
+1 for this idea.
Yep Arena Net this is lame. A joke is one thing but what you are doing is annoying people. It’s like that one bad comedian that wont kitten and get off stage. Ruined the mood of the game. (not everyone is 12 years old.)…also doing this when airplane crashes are on the news daily. Bad, bad taste and losing brownie points with me fast.
Speak for yourself. I’m not annoyed at all. I’ve had a lot of fun tonight. Tell you what is annoying: Yet another of you whiners finding it necessary to post Another thread about this.
You know what else is annoying? Posters who find others who have different opinions annoying. Zing!
Seriously, if you don’t like the subject of the thread move on.
Yea, this is really bad taste and extremely untimely.
I feel the joke would have gone over better had the game reverted to its normal settings after the initial login per character. As it stands I won’t be logging in until it reverts back. Not because of the blatant insensitivity, I frankly dislike having my character frozen in place making “weee!” sounds all night.
Some of the posts here make it look as if map chat was full of some kind of immature or offensive comments. A cesspool of swear words and sexual jokes. That’s just not true.
What i find weird is that most of those who said this was the case have map chat turned off… so you don’t even know if it’s true or not. It is not true.Honestly, i hate people who use “lol” and “:P” all the time. Maybe someone should do something about those (a perma ban might be in order).
Because you don’t see it, it must not be there? Perception is not reality. Just because the times you play and the places where you play do not have players abusing chat channels or other players is irrelevant. It happens, period.
The question going forward is what the playerbase can do to help Anet clean it up. For starters we can report the infractions more often versus simply blocking the person. As another poster admitted: he feels he had the right to use offensive language. Wrong. Players with mindsets like this have to be given consequences for their misdeeds and it starts with other players making Anet aware.
(edited by Vix.6730)
Lol you need to get over yourselves. There’s a profanity filter and a block option, if you can’t take people swearing, or talking about sex and drugs, then filter them out.
They’re not obligated to mind their manners around you. Remember, online actions and interactions are not rated by the ESRB.
It’s not there so players are free to use vulgar and profane language.
Then what is it for? I say the f-word in almost every single sentence I make. That’s how I grew up, that’s who I am, that’s the way I speak. Many many people have blocked me because they don’t like to hear the f-word so much. I understand and respect that, but I am never going to stop saying it because of how others feel. That’s what the filter/block is for.
No, you’re absolutely wrong. If you have so little self control that you can’t avoid saying a word that is offensive to a majority of people, then stop talking in the game. It’s that simple. You do not have a license to swear because of the filter. You do not have permission to offend others because of a lack of self-control, or your personal belief system, or your feeling of an inherent right to do as you want.
Our games are played on private game servers, and everyone who plays our game — everyone — agrees to abide by the User Agreement and the Rules of Conduct. If you cannot uphold the agreement that you freely accepted in order to join our game then again, I encourage you not to use any of the public chat channels but instead restrict yourself to those that are of a private nature, such as party chat amongst like-minded friends.
Edited to change “vast majority” or “a majority.” Arguments about percentages, global interpretations, personal preferences, or semantics will not be entertained. This is an important topic that should be joined only with the intention of legitimate and helpful participation.
Thank you for stating this! Some players forget about the terns of service they agree to with each and every login. This isn’t your daddy’s garage.
Having said that, I feel the reporting tool can use a few more classifications.
The Guild Halls should be a lobby for its members with a few NPC’s scattered about and nothing more. I seriously doubt we’ll ever have the ability to custom design the hall (moving furniture for example) but halls akin to GW1 would suit me just fine.
In my opinion, this game has one of the worst communities I’ve seen in a long time. Maybe not as bad as diablo 2 but still… pretty bad especially in sPvP and here on the forums.
I have to agree. The community as a whole has soured to the point I keep Say and Map chat off. The swearing filter will block certain words, however there’s been a tidalwave of immaturity, racism, sexism and homophobia that’s made me question why I still play this game. It’s not just in the cities and starter maps. Its in meta-events, dungeons and world bosses.
If Anet delivered Xpacs instead of Living Story releases from the start, we probably would have had an expansion every year, Like we did with Gw1.
I’ve been starving for content for so long, and the LS just doesn’t cut it.
An expansion is what this game truly needs…..
…but turning off the Living Story in the meantime is not what it needs.…and withholding new content releases, then giving those same releases to us in a bundle with a price tag is not an expansion…. its a joke.
Agree. The Living Story was released as filler content until something meatier came about. See Winds of Change as a perfect example of storyline content designed to bridge larger content.
For a long while we bought into the Living Story. We forgave Anet as they retooled the medium to better suit the players, but the quantity never increased above an hour or so of content per release. This was simply never enough to keep the players engaged, and thus we had barren cities.
Following the announcement of Heart of Thorns the best thing Anet could have done was continue with the Living Story. This particular method of content would have been well-received and kept interests high while HoT wraps up production. Instead we get to see another period of staleness. Another lull in the game, and more questions as to why Anet continues down this unorthodox path.
I’m excited to see all the already rich folks speculating and buying up some items that are in limited supply to destroy everyone’s hopes for a precursor.
Hopefully every precursor requires a stack of giants eyes to dance in front of or something.
Quite the opposite. If what Anet laid out rings true there will be more legendaries being flung around than ever. All maps ( aside from SW and Dry Top) will shower players with the necessary mats. And to top it off, the weapons will be account-bound, so no more kittenbag power traders.
just for a comparison let’s have a look at the 3.0 expansion in Rift
http://forums.riftgame.com/general-discussions/patch-notes/442490-rift-3-0-nightmare-tide-7-00am-pdt-10-22-14-na-2-00pm-gmt-10-22-14-eu.htmland it was totally for FREE
and now look at the amount of content of HoT with the knowledge that it will be NOT for FREE
so…seriously…why do ppl even have to pay for this HoT when other companies can do bigger expansions for free?
maybe we should wait till release and talk about quality instead of quantity later on … when i read “level cap increase to 65” i just want to puke ^^ but we cant judge anything of HoT atm so a comparison is not useful till we know everything about it.
RIFT is a great example of a developer putting forth serious effort to satisfy their playerbase. And having played through Nightmare Tide the quality was there.
I believe Heart of Thorns will come up short of satisfying the playerbase because of the paywall. Many of the announced features were backlog additions to the core game or sorely missed features from GW1. Precursor crafting? New legendaries? Guild halls? How many of these “new” features received development time long before an expansion was decided? How much of it sat in developmental hell while upper management changed directions? HoT may go down as one of the thinnest expansions to be released by a AAA developer.
GW2 lost a lot of players during the two year stretch of thin LS releases. The price of HoT has to be really fair.

How about three amazing Norns in one shot? I’m to the left, standing alongside Alkyone Wulfsdottir and Kerstin Jorasdottir, respectively.

This has been posted before. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=umpR6LhBhW4 starting @4:20 . Anet developers have already come out and stated no new dungeons. No conspiracy, no rumors. There won’t be any dungeons.
I got bored after 5 minutes, there’s literally nothing to do.
Sorry for all those who found the xpac to be less than stellar. Hopefully Anet takes heed and throws more content/features into HoT initial release versus holding back for future updates.
Note: since it was a stress test some of the PvE content may have been locked. Let’s hope so.
http://www.glassdoor.com/Reviews/Employee-Review-ArenaNet-RVW4234884.htm
Some other reviews mention it too. Reviews mention that arenanet rarely hire and rely quasi-exclusively on contractors. I now wait for my posts to be moderated and my account banned, as usual when I mention those things.
Those reviews were spot on. I will purposely leave out where I work, but we have a satellite office in Seattle, and a co-worker of mine held a temp job there for six months. His team had to pull six day work weeks. Great for him since he was hourly, bad for the salary devs. A few openly discussed opportunities elsewhere. Casual conversation, mind you, but one did leave during his stay.
I just not received the email inviting me to Beta and where as my husband and I were convinced that it wasn’t likely I would be picked… I find myself just a little jittery off this invitation.
So!
Um, never did a Beta before, a friend who has told me all I have to do is go in there and play but… Okay, is this true? All I have to do is…play?
And, um… are we allowed to take screenshots as keepsakes? lol
I just want to make sure of all of this, I don’t wanna end up doing something I shouldn’t be doing?
This is not a beta in the sense Anet is looking for players who have tested games before and can report bugs. The open application and lack of a questionnaire means it’s a marketing tool for Anet to gain more exposure.
So what does that mean for you? Have fun!
One of the most loyal players?
I think this is really wrong.
I been support Anet since GW1 and i have Faction and Nightfall CE of GW1.
GW2 CE it was imposible to get in Bosnia and Herzegovina and i been invite a lot o my friends in GW2.I’m no one of loyal players?
I’m not dissapointed for no CBT invite i’m just dissapointed for “most loyal” players.
Sorry Anet this is just wrong
I agree. Terrible wording. A slap in the face to any other long-time player who submitted their email. But let’s not kid ourselves. This is not a real “beta” where a gaming company is looking for testers. It’s a demo open to random players.
OP: Why do you think that this will be the only design?
Because the design has made it this far into production.
Yeah there’s new legendaries in HoT. I’m not saving any normal t6 mats we currently have access to now though cause the new weapons will probably require ingredients from the new areas – so rich players can’t just immediately buy them. To invest in lots of t6 mats is risky, it’s a gamble really – could go either way.
Agreed. The point of the new Legendaries should revolve around a new way of acquiring them, so I doubt any of the T6 ingredients used for the current ones will move over. I can see Karma being used in some fashion, since you earn that through activities and the game frankly doesn’t have enough items to use this for.
The developers have already stated dungeons are too hard to make. So look for a compromise. What that compromise is could be anyone’s guess,
Oh I have the tomes to make it to instant 80, I just don’t want to see a bunch of bads, running around, not knowing what they are doing and ruining everyone else gameplay just because they skipped the learning experience part.
Have you seen those players that instant level an ele to 80 and how bad they are?
Same concept.
Because you’ll be the expert at playing the Revenant when HoT launches? Why don’t you change your name to DarthElitist, it fits better.
There’s something off with this beta. Based on the generic sign up page Anet is not looking for testers, but rather players to demo their client.
In the traditional MMO every single random mob in the open world takes everything on your skill bar to kill it. This is extremely boring going from PvE enemy to PvE enemy and it is why I stay away from the traditional mmo.
When Anet announced that they want players having to think about using your whole skill bar to kill any enemy in HoT I was a little worried and still am.
I believe there should be varying difficulties of mobs. The normal mobs right now that are not elite, not veterans, or champions are fine. They should not take more than 10 seconds to kill. If we have to use all of our skill bar that means we have to wait in between mobs for cooldowns.
The only enemy NPCs that should have a makeover on difficulty are veteran to champion level mobs. Veterans should be able to be soloed by utilizing dodges and various hindering abilities. Elite should be able to be taken down by 2 players. Champions should take at least 3 or 2 well skilled players.
If I have to use every skill on my bar to kill say a normal non-veteran mordremoth denizen, deer or boar in the HoT zone I will be bored very quickly. This kind of repetitiveness will kill Guild Wars.
I’m calling BS on all of this. As it is I can solo champions with ease. The game cannot be any easier. The more challenges the better. Since our character will theoretically progress in HoT I’d half expect the enemies too progress as well.
The changes to Defiance along with Slow and Taunt is a move in the right direction. Hopefully bosses in existing dungeons can be updated with these changes. I’ve never run zerker on my warrior and thankfully I won’t have to.
Warriors should be able to take a shot while controlling the tempo of a fight. The same goes for guardians.
Patience? Heh.
Those who are willing to accept less will get just that: less. And less. And less. Is that what you want?
So what exactly are you going to do about it? Talk is cheap.
Oh? Then why do politicians get paid so much?
Ahem.
I’ll tell you what I won’t do.
I won’t buy HoT the instant it’s released. I won’t pre-order, either, if that’s even an option. I’ll wait and see what’s actually delivered. I’ll read the patch notes. I’ll read the reviews, watch the inevitable playthrough videos. I’ll talk to any guildies who get it and see what they have to say about it. Then, if it seems worthwhile and worth the purchase price, and if it suits me to do so, I’ll buy it. If not, I won’t. I encourage you and everyone else here to do the same.
Well said. Most of the features announced have been discussed on and off for two years now. And the fact that Colin stated HoT will have just three maps (overlapping) the price is put into question.
I’m going to wait and see what HoT really offers before purchasing. More should do the same.
Hey guys, I purchased GW2 back on launch day and played it for quite a bit for the first couple of months, and I loved it! It was a fun and entertaining, it added to the typical MMO format, but kept it very similar all the same. I maxed out two characters then…deleted one of the two to make another character because during the time that I hit 80…there wasn’t a lot to do.
So I continued maxing characters until I left the game due to my real life situation. Flash forward a couple years, I’ve came back to the game I loved so much but it’s…boring. I feel everything is very hand-holdy and it doesn’t have the flare and entertainment that I loved so much. I haven’t tried out the new 80 content but I’ve been told it’s nothing but a grindfest which is all great but not my kind of dish. PvP is still very lack luster and has very little progression which caused me to come to the conclusion that I MUST be missing something!
Why is GW2 one of the most popular games (surpassing WoW is some areas) of 2015? What am I missing? And WHY the hell do I find the game so boring now?! I look forward to being flamed and hated upon with the occasional sarcastic comment thrown in there, but maybe…just maybe I’ll get a decent conversation out of this thread!
I’d be hard pressed to call GW2 the best MMO of 2015,or 2014 for that matter. It’s a good game but still comes up short with GW1. The passion and innovation are missing.
Anet burned a lot of bridges the past two years, driving off loyal players in droves. The expansion was a good first step in bringing those players back, however, it can’t end there.
I’ve never understood why Anet designed themselves into this corner. The end game is strictly vanity. Not who has the most powerful character, or who controls the biggest stronghold, but armor and weapon skins.
Who can look the most unique, that’s the endgame. By designing the outfits to be a one trick pony, one look fits all limits the ways a player can appear unique, thus ignoring GW2’s greatest strength.
I’ve played almost every mmo out there. My favourite was Anarchy Online because of the depth ,dependance on other professions and the community.
GW2 breaks the mold with class dependencies. The days of waiting for a healer or tank to join your party are over. Why play in such constricted fashion?
…I don’t think we’ve seen the end of exploration.
Of course we haven’t. But there’s “stop and smell the roses” exploration, and there’s “get across the street as fast as you can before you get hit by traffic” exploration. Lately, Guild Wars 2 has been far too much of the latter and not nearly enough of the former.
+1 Good point.
peaceful areas wouldn’t make sense in the context of the story. You cannot have a peaceful area in a dragon control area. You could create a new peaceful map but that would simply be a waste of resources to create something that is not relevant to the game.
Peaceful areas could still work. You replace “peaceful” with tense. An area just on the fringe of conflict, but a place we could essentially let out guard down momentarily. Furthermore, you could break up the peace with defense events like we already have in many areas.
The gameplay shown in the latest Points of Interest didn’t impress me either.
Guild halls were something along with GvG that anyone should have expected DAY ONE with a sequel to GUILD wars.
Sadly the name GUILD WARS is given by the GUILD WARS between the major guilds of Ascalon Kryta and Orr and has nothing to do with player-guild-based PvP
learn the Lore :p
Obviously you never played GW1 otherwise you’d know better. GvG was massive hit with the playerbase and community. The way the games played out, the tournaments, the leaderboards, even how you could watch other teams play was masterfully done and underscored the game’s title. GvG should have been included at launch and was sorely missed.
It is annoying how some QoL features/things that seem like they should be in a feature pack are going to be behind a pay wall (precursor hunt anyone?). But, I’ll reserve judgement until they say more info on each individual topic. After learning about Stronghold, I’m pleased with everything except for it being thrown into the normal PvP rotation/starting as a 5v5.
I forgot to add precursor crafting/acquirement to another post I made. Totally agree with you. When Colin and Mike began listing the features included in HoT I narrowed my gaze. We were asking for precursor crafting for years, it never materialized and now we get to pay for precursor adventuring. I’m glad its finally coming but it reflects how stale Anet allowed GW2 to become before work on an expansion. For all intents and purposes, HoT will be making up ground for the last 2 1/2 years rather than pushing things forward.
I know the first person camera perspective was sorely missed at launch, and I’m glad it’s finally reaching the game. Will this feature be tucked behind the expansion? If so, then that’s disconcerting. Between first person camera, Stronghold ( evolution of GvG) and guild halls these features should have been included at launch. More and more, the expansion is feeling like a chance to purchase the missing core components from launch and not an actual expansion of the game.
Please stop lumping yourself in with the rest of us that don’t need or require more bank space.
9 level 80’s multiple gearsets on each and yet here’s my bank.
And how is this screenshot indicative of the rest of us? It’s indicative of you and you only. Leave “the rest of us” out of it.
And to the OP – bank space in GW2 wouldn’t be a problem if there weren’t so many items that couldn’t be fit into the wallet. I will give Anet credit for allowing things like bandit crests to be included at least.
