Why do we have Thunderclap?

Well, rangers are a force of nature. Not quite a druid, but definitely wielding power over nature. Maybe Melandru’s like “omg one of my boys/girls is in trouble”! Well, until you play a different race, but humans are the best >.>

Aquatic clones apply confusion?

WeWantWaffles.2873

For once, the title is pretty much the question. It says nowhere that clones deal confusion on hit, but underwater it’s all they do. It applies to any clone, either made by utility (mirror images in my case) or weapon (trident in my case).

I’m confused!

Thank you very much for your replies. This has been incredibly helpful :)

I’ve had to browse a lot of threads to learn why people enjoy mesmer, though this here has been way more informative than other threads. I don’t doubt that I’ll enjoy mesmer now <3. It may take a bit longer to beat enemies, but it’s absolutely fabulous in style, and the playstyle after level 40 looks incredibly appealing.

Also thank you to dare for reviving this thread. I was getting discouraged at the 0 replies thing. <3 Hearts, I mean it :D

Jayderyu, I don’t really agree with what you said related to guild wars 1, because in that game, every class was meant to work together as a team. While it’s true that mesmers weren’t considered the damage-dealers, their function was incredibly important and useful. Very few classes could solo anything, and often it was an elaborate or difficult build.
In any case!

GW2 is different. It advertised itself as a game where every profession could fulfill a lot of roles, though many professions lean in a certain direction. Warriors buff, do burst damage, are naturally quite tanky, have great ranged damage. Guardians are built for healing and protecting party members, but do great damage of their own. Why they would look at mesmer and go: “This one should be miserable in PvE”, is therefore beyond me.

We pretty much made the same post at roughly the same time. I know exactly what you mean. In actuality I made a mesmer and had her at -exactly- lvl 27. Then I ended up deleting her, now I started over, but I’m having the same problems pretty much.

I love the style, and the phantasm/clone idea is a great one, but so much time is spent fighting even the weakest little enemy, and once again I’m doubting my profession. Any help would be lovely, though I dread the reply; “Use a sword or greatsword”, because I’ve done that and it gets quite repetitive as well. My main question is if traits will reduce the amount of time spent fighting regular enemies, or if it’ll be pretty much the same.

I totally feel you!

Hello :)

After getting a bit bored of ranger, I had to think about which class to play. Mesmer was always a gw1 favorite, though it has gone through a rather dramatic change since then. I’ve begun to get into the profession (level 19 at the moment), though I’ve noticed that every new monster I fight requires me to set up clones, then indirectly dispatch the enemy through careful placement of phantasms and well-timed shatter skills.

This is fine. It’s lovely, and excellent, until the 1000th enemy. I’ve grown a bit tired of having to spend a long time trying to eliminate a single enemy. It would be lovely to know if things get better as my traits increase. I’m not asking for a better pve class than ranger/warrior/guardian – I just like the idea of relaxing a li’l bit, and not having to focus every battle.

As for weapons: I use all kinds. Sword seems like the damage-dealer alongside greatsword, though I like being able to switch weapons on occasion. Variety makes the game more fun.

Any suggestions or thoughts? :)

Question about player combat

In WvW, dying will damage one part of your armor. This doesn’t affect the quality of your armor, but if every part of your equipment is damaged, then it will start ‘breaking’ the next time you die. Broken armor is removed (you’ll lose your pants for instance), but can be repaired.

Enemy players gain random loot for killing you, but you won’t lose anything. The only cost is damaged armor, and waypoints in wvw are free to use. While the cost for broken armor is close to nothing at low levels, it will begin to add up as you level up!

Lastly, you gain experience in wvw for completing events (destroy caravans, take towers/camps/keeps, or random monster events), and you also get xp/loot for killed enemies, including players. PvP works differently to WvW though; it’s almost like a different game, with a completely different currency called ‘glory’. It’s detached from the rest of the game.

"Fencing" Class?

in Players Helping Players

WeWantWaffles.2873

Ranger: relies on a lot of dodging in general. A ranger’s #2 and #3 attacks on longsword are made to dodge backwards or roll around your target for a poison sting. It’s a bit unfair to list this as the sword is currently bugged and not good for dodging. They’ll fix it eventually. Rangers have medium hp & medium armor, lacking variety in their utility skills currently, though it’s on the list. Should be noted that they attack in unison with their pets, giving you a unique playstyle once everything lacking about ranger gets sorted.

Thief: Not really dodging, but uses teleportation quite often. The idea to melee thief in general is to try and backstab the enemy, abusing stealth/stun/blind to keep your frail self safe. Thieves have the lowest hp & medium armor, and a lot of useful utility skills to play around with.

Warrior: Doesn’t dodge so much as block. You can mix the sword with a shield or with a second offhand sword. Their sword skills add a lot of bleeding damage alongside reliable damage, making it a very satisfying and reliable weapon. Warriors have high hp and high armor, with plenty of utility to skills that can change the finer points to the profession.

Mesmer: Is very graceful and spawns clones of itself to misdirect enemies. They are fragile, and will always be seen alongside their illusions in a fight. It’s definitely an advanced profession that is more about trickery rather than finesse; make clones, teleport away, go invisible! They have medium hp, light armor, slightly more situational utility skills.

If you’re sticking with thief: don’t worry about the difficult start at low levels! It will get better around level 20 or so, as thieves will often need to rely on utility skills for survival. It’s a powerful and fun choice, with a lot of variety. I just hope you try your best to appreciate its features more than the average wvw player, meaning.. Don’t just max power/precision, try to play with conditions, stuns, harassment, etc!

Need help/tips

You probably need to take a little step back and view the professions for what they really are! : )

Dual-wielding swords in the traditional slash/stab & bloody way is a thing that only warriors are capable of doing. They run up and slash, quite forward and simple, direct damage.

Mesmers on the other hand, use offhand swords defensively, and they are not a direct combat class, favoring the use of illusions to distract and harass. So you won’t be running up to attack targets like some kind of spartan warrior. Instead you’ll carefully block, make clones of yourself and use a lot of evasion and misdirection to keep yourself safe while in close range of the enemy.

In short: warrior. It’s the best beginner class and it’s very satisfying to play, even for people who are familiar with the game mechanics. They also won’t take anywhere near as much damage in melee, and have the highest health (along with necromancers).

I have been looking for the “Wizard” set in PvE, but haven’t found it. After a lot of browsing, nothing turned up. Is this armor PvP only? I attached an image.

General Patch Discussion [merged]

WeWantWaffles.2873

I’ve tried to appreciate the gw2 style of pets working in unison with the ranger, though I never quite seem to find the perfect balance. Either the pet dies, or the damage is lacking, utility skills are limited to traps or 6-second signet effects, etc.. So I looked up to the next update that seemed to be have so much in store for us rangers! Unfortunately, it didn’t give more options to explore, and failed to fix bugs.

That said, as much as I am -disappointed- like many of you are, it is incredibly childish to insult people just because you can’t settle with a temporary drawback in a videogame world. I understand the frustration, but hateful insults will not help anyone.

As for me, I’m done with ranger. I wish I could keep all the progress on my next character though :/ I just don’t have the patience to wait for another two months in the hopes that the profession will finally fit into the game again.

Ranger Pets & Avoid Combat

in Suggestions

Posted by: WeWantWaffles.2873

WeWantWaffles.2873

Practical idea:
Get rid of ‘avoid combat’, and make it so your pet does not show up automatically once you enter combat. It’s useful for exploring and will also appease several people who prefer to occasionally travel alone as a ranger for whatever reason!

Several people have also told me that once they switch on ‘avoid combat’, they tend to fight things for 10 mins before realizing the pet isn’t helping. This seems like a nice fix for it?

Thank you for reading! I realize people have often made ranger/pet threads, but I couldn’t find this exact suggestion with the search option. <3

Prayer to Dwyana healing skill needs buff

Dwayna needs a small boost. Though I do wonder if it benefits more from healing power than certain other skills..

Human Racial Skills

in Suggestions

Posted by: WeWantWaffles.2873

WeWantWaffles.2873

I think the point to racial skills is to make them less powerful and more situational than class skills. You rarely see other races use their racial skills as well – though the norn wurm seems to pop up more than usual.

I personally would have looooved something along the lines of GW1 avatar of X skills, particularly for form skills like grenth & melandru. While I do think Lyssa desperately needs a more reliable effect, dwayna can use the slightest health bonus and melandru could do with shorter cast times, the idea of all these skills is to give you something your class normally would not have.

- Dwayna gives direct heals to professions that have low or no direct healing skills
- Kormir gives 3 condition removals, which is rare on any skill
- Grenth allows you to get poison & chill, great for guardian/warrior in melee
- Balthazar is quite alright for quick allies
- Melandru is supposed to heal/support, but is just not worth the slot..
- Lyssa is only good if you want to play around

So most of them have a point, and some professions have no use for certain ones. Personally I’d love it if reaper/melandru were actual avatars, and I definitely see why melandru & Lyssa need a boost!

Do you feel bad for the Ghosts of Ascalon?

I feel quite bad about the human ghosts because they were nice, honorable people protecting their homeland. And everytime I’m forced to do the catacombs, I sigh and roll my eyes when Rytlock doesn’t even BOTHER to talk to the ghosts that actually seem quite reasonable. I really don’t like helping Rytlock kill the people who protected innocents from being burned alive by charr in the first game. Yes! Burned alive, cuz that’s what the charr did!

I’d like to know if traps can be seen by your enemy players. I’ve played a ranger for quite a bit, find its potential interesting, especially since they’ve promised a few utility buffs <3 Do traps leave red circles to enemies, or are they actually a powerful tool for ambushing rather than something you plop down mid-combat?

Thanks! : )

All one-handed weapons (Daggers, Guns, Swords) are inside my character’s thighs. For physique, I have chosen the second option on the first row, which is a bit wider than the standard selection.

My character is human, the armor is medium and is called ‘duelist’.
