Not even a “sorry”, a stick post saying what they are looking into, just some random reply that people may or may not see.
Yeah, this speaks volumes for what kind of company Anet is.

I had my fun with GW2, despite the bugs or the stupid AI, or the forgotten dungeons and their exploits shared freely.

Guess I’ll choose a starter map and donate my gold to a random new player. At least they had a good deal and it will take time for them to be kittened over. hahaha.

101 pages of people discussing the multiple issues surrounding the pre-order deal.
Multiple other threads, and yet Anet silence remains.

If a company can’t come up with an official statement after a week, I guess it’s time to pack and move to another game. Sad, I really loved this one.

You do realize that the Anet official statement is already in the thread, posted 5 days ago? Expansion is $50, period. Its the answer to the thread. Just because people dont like it or choose to ignore it doesnt make it any less of an official statement. What came after is as you said, 101 pages of people discussing stuff.

Ahh brave knight, lets clear some topics for you, since you haven’t been paying attention. I understand, being a knight and all must take a lot of your time.

*Problem number 1: *

They had a campaign that stated we need the core game to play HoT, that later changed to notify that HoT already has the core game included.

They had sales over a period of months on top of that initial statement.

The only “official” response for that was a forum post somewhere on this mess. That hasn’t even been made a stick, saying that they would refund. So far some people managed to get a refund from purchases made more than 30 days, while others didnt. Its incosistent.

And there’s no clear answer as to what happens to those accounts, since again, some said they would lose their accounts, while others kept. Again, incosistency.

*Problem number 2: *

Client 1 pays 50$ for a product and gets item X and Y. Item Y is free, so they say.
Client 2 pays 50$ for a product and gets item X. He can’t get item Y because he already owns. Where’s the freebie for client 2?

That lowers the value of any purchase, and make the deal look more appealing for only one of the clients.

*Problem number 3: *

There hasn’t been a great deal of features that made HoT look like its worth 50$. Guild halls? A new region? Elite specs that haven’t even been revealed yet? A new class that is still being worked on?
Not enough for some people, and for those, they can just wait and see. Easy.

Now brave knight, I hope that has cleared some stuff for you. And I hope you enjoy your next adventures in this land so full of trolls.

I wonder why the didn’t just left the game at a 10$ price, if the purpose of the pre-order is to have a low barrier of entry, that would be huge.

It would have been damaging. A $10 account becomes profitable after 2 months just by logging in every day. On the other hand, it wouldn’t have lasted as the items being sold would greatly diminish in value. The other problem with a cheap entry fee is that it make it very easy for bots/spammer/etc.

To prevent that, they simply repackaged the game, merging GW2 and HoT. They should have offered HoT for $49.99 and HoT+GW2 for $59.99. Instead, they cut the heroic edition and simply included it for free. The heroic edition’s rewards alone had a $20 value, so if you subtract that from the $10 price tag, the core game by itself has no value.

Good points, I didn’t consider that.
That HoT+GW2 does sounds more reasonable, and still acting as a low barrier of entry. But alas, that can’t happen anymore. Well not for now at least.

All games eventually reach a point where they are phased out. If a retailer has any left, he throws it in the bargain bin to get rid of it. It may very well be that ANet was considering making the core game F2P to attract new players who might then spend in the store. I believe they chose not to because of RMT players being able to get free accounts and maybe also because some vets would make numerous accounts for laurel farming of T6 mats.

GW2 was selling for $10 right after the HoT announcement. That’s an 83% discount from the initial sale price of $59.99. My sympathies are with those who’ve bought the game since the HoT announcement based on thinking they’d need to to progress in the game. I believe that it would be fair for ANet to do something to redress this issue beyond just refunding sales in the last 30 days. Iirc, the refund policy at launch was six months, not one.

I wonder why the didn’t just left the game at a 10$ price, if the purpose of the pre-order is to have a low barrier of entry, that would be huge.
More players, they enjoy the core game, and then buy the expansion for 50$ .

Perhaps I’m just being wishful here, but I think that would have avoided most of the complaints, and this whole fiasco.

Then all they would need to do is prove the expansion is worth 50$ to those that don’t want to pre-order right now.

All a lawyer would need to do is point to ANet’s only prior sale of an expansion (Eye of the North). Players were required to own one of the GW campaigns to access EotN content. EotN was later bundled with other campaigns in package deals, but was not so bundled when first offered. That lawyer could also then point to other providers in the same industry who require a base game to access an expansion, and also do not provide a bundle on the first offering of that expansion. At this point, multiple precedents would support the contention that consumers had every right to expect that purchase of the game was necessary, not that the game was necessary.

Once that was established, your defense point would be reduced to semantics and dismissed as a consideration in determining whether consumers were misled. This would not prove intent to deceive. That could not be proved without more information than I’ve seen. However, I don’t believe that would be necessary to establish that ANet is in the wrong.

That did crossed my mind. It sounds reasonable enough, though I’m no lawyer.

My thing is, who knows if after release they simply won’t split the two again and have base game and HoT be buyable?

[…]

If that was the case there would be no need to change the FAQ.

Q: Do I have to own Guild Wars 2 to play the expansion?

A: Yes, but Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns includes the Guild Wars 2 core game.

This leads customers to believe that HoT itself already includes base GW2, not just the pre-order.

If they again change the FAQ after the pre-order is done, then once again they are misleading customers.

Ok Vayne. You make excelent points, and I agree with you at some stuff.

I definately don’t have a degree in law, but what you are saying to me is basically “unless you work at Anet, or have an employee with you to prove it, you have nothing”.

So, what could a consumer do in that case? Since by your logic he has absolutely nothing, just continue pushing support until they refund him?

I’ve seen people saying they had success, I’ve seen others saying they got nothing, I’ve seen others saying they had to push and push, until things worked. Is that how we as consumers should accept things?

Some times it works, some times it doesn’t? Just because it was 10$ it’s ok to treat the situation lightly?

My logic is, I’ve seen companies run ads for television saying “Hey, pay what you want for this product” and then all you could choose was how many payments to make, taken to the law, people won products paying as little as a dollar.

Yeah, they had no intent to deceive, it was an oversight, but mistake or not, the campaign said something and that wasn’t true. It’s the same here, they said something, and that is no longer true.

I know people can get a refund, if they somehow find out about it.

The only consumers that know about this are the ones that actually took the time to read thousands of complaints and somehow find that anet is refunding purchases.

It’s not even a stick in the forums. What happens to all those that bought the game believing they had to buy it to enjoy HoT and don’t check the forums? Is it ok to trick those people?

Wolfeng.3784

Thank you, been saying this since day one. While criticizing the price tag for being too high is a perfectly valid complaint, the primary issue is the fact that Anet engaged in false advertising. Since HoT was announced, they sold thousands upon thousands of copies of the base game using it, even having sales to promote it. Anet was basically saying “Hey, we have an expansion coming out soon. You should purchase the base game while it’s on sale!” They did this, knowing for at least the past month or two that HoT would include the base game, and that a standalone option at a reduced price would not be available. Anybody who bought the game in anticipation for HoT got screwed hard.

And to the people who hit the reply button and are typing out “but the base game is a bonus,” stop and think for a second. Do you really think a AAA game developer would sacrifice that much revenue? You are painfully naive if you really think that Anet isn’t going to subsidize the cost of the base game somewhere. That’s where your $50 price tag comes from.

We can’t know for sure wheter or not they knew it would include the base game. But the fact is it does now, and that changes everything.

I’m still waiting to see what they come up with to fix this mess. Silence is definately not the way to handle this.

Ignore the fact that a group of people is getting something for free while the other doesn’t.
That is a minor issue, they can do something about it or not.

The real problem however is that ever since they announced HoT, they said you would need the base game.
For months they had sales of the game, for months they profited with that information.

And now all of a sudden the FAQ changes and states that HoT includes the base game for free.

What has Anet done so far to adress this issue? A single forum post saying people could look for a refund? That may or may not work?

How many of those customers will actually see that forum post? (I can’t even find it on the forums anymore)

Where is the blog post about it? The twitter about it? The email about it? The full list of what people can expect when getting refunded? Will they lose their account, will they lose the link they made with GW1? What are their going to do about people who bought the game in another store? There were sales all over the place because of THEIR information.

Another problem:

Their pre-purchase video says we will get access to the heart of the maguuma, but during the beta we had to complete that piece of the living story to enter it. Is that final?

If I pre-purchase do I get the whole Season 2? The lack of info, and the fear that info may change at any time is a serious concern when money is involved.

Also: Forget the price.

False advertising or deceptive advertising is the use of false or misleading statements in advertising, and misrepresentation of the product at hand, which may negatively affect many stakeholders, especially consumers. As advertising has the potential to persuade people into commercial transactions that they might otherwise avoid, many governments around the world use regulations to control false, deceptive or misleading advertising. Truth refers to essentially the same concept, that customers have the right to know what they are buying, and that all necessary information should be on the label.

False advertising, in the most blatant of contexts, is illegal in most countries. However, advertisers still find ways to deceive consumers in ways that are legal, or technically illegal but unenforceable.

Yeah, when a company does something that is illegal in pretty much most countries, the consumers are the ones taking too far… way to go.

Since we are reposting. I feel like this is still important.

FIRST and most important:

- They falsely advertised the “expansion” making buy the game when it went on sale.
- Expansion is in fact the base game now. All those sales were useless and just generate extra money for Anet with no benefit to the person who bought.
- Their refund policy SO FAR, is deleting those accounts, losing all your progress, and even being unable to relink your GW1 account.

THATS SCAM! IF you can get behind a company that scammed hundreds of players with a false advertising campaign, go for it.

SECOND and not so important.

Even if the base game is free, there’s VALUE in it. And this VALUE is not reflected in the purchase of older players.

Don’t you dare say “you enjoyed 3 years of blah blah blah”. I (and many others) only began playing before the expansion was announced, anything I enjoyed is available for any new player.

If Anet wanted to make something good for new players, giving them extra value on their purchase, why is the same not being done to the people that already owned the game? Why is our money LESS VALUABLE?

THIRD and even less important.

Even if you say the base game is free, all we know for a FACT is that the base game is definatelly worth 50$.
Can we really REALLY be sure that the expansion is offering 50$ worth of content?
Can we REALLY be sure that the expansion isn’t being priced at 50$ just because the base game is included?

Considering how Anet scammed all those people in the first point, I don’t think we can trust the company anymore.

I know my “solution” is going to make the defenders of Anet laugh, but that’s the same thing other companies that went through this have done it, time and time again.

- Everyone that you scammed, everyone that bought the game since the expansion was announced should get Heart of Thorns for free. Upgrade those accounts. No stupid refund where you delte their account, just plain and simple, upgrade their accounts for the expansion.

Yes, you will lose money from those sales, but you brought this on yourself when you turned everything into false advertising.

- For the older players, we get to pay the 50$ you want. But since you want to offer the base game for FREE, since you’re adding so much value in that purchase, offer something of equal value.

Our money should not be worth less than that of another consumer.

Now as a final reply for those that would defend Anet.
All we want from Anet is to be treated equally as consumers. Right now our money holds less value, and that’s what driving everyone to “whine” as you say.

Took 7 years to get GW2.
Everyone seems to forget that while they’re espousing just how much wonder they’ve obviously come up with in merely 3…

I doubt they’ve been working on an expac for a full 3 years. It’s probably closer to a year, msybe a year and a half.

Is it even that?

They said they would launch the specializations when they had something to show. So far only a few have been presented and with doubts, possible changes to them.
Revenant only had a few trait lines, we only got to explore a piece of a map.

For a game that has been in development for “so long” it feels like everything is early work.

There are so many haters in Gw2 community, stop complaining, it would have cost the same without the core for free for new players. This community has to agree to the fact that we all win with this, we have our expansion and they have the entire game, which would increase the number of people who play it, so more money for Anet and better content in the future. I know this is difficult, but you will get over it, gokitten, Anet is doing alright, just buy it or dont if you dont want to, but dont claim more than they offer, you know where the door is. I never proposed char slot. (not on this thread at least) v
“offer something of equal value.”
That’s what I’m asking.

I also have no problem with the PRICE, and if you feel like it’s ok for your money to hold less value than that of another consumer, that’s perfectly fine. It is a personal opinion.

I’m no veteran, I hate the world, and like I said above, time invested has nothing to do with it. All we’re asking is for our money to hold the SAME VALUE of another consumer.

Aren't you all taking this too far?

Isn’t this whole thing considered a scam worthy of legal action?

I mean, Anet had stated that we needed the base game to play HoT, then went on to offer that base game for sale over multiple times.

But now the base game is HoT. Meaning everyone who bought the game on sale were scammed into buying the game twice.

If the base game is now HoT, shouldn’t existing players get HoT for free then? (I know, this is a stretch, I’m just being sarcastic)

Pretty much how I feel, no value whatsoever when comparing my money to that of someone new.

Let me clarify 50$ for an expansion pack is totally fine for me. I will gladly pay that or even the $100 for the ultimate edition.

The problem comes when you are offering the base game for “free” for all those new players.

Now I’m not saying new players don’t deserve this kind of special (and awesome) treatment, but what about the older players?

What about the people that already own the game? What about the people that stayed with you guys for all this time? Don’t they deserve some kind of bonus too?

Here’s my suggestion, since the basic expansions already includes the base game, people that already own the game gains instead those characters slots on their account. *

You seem to be a bit confused about the acceptance of exploits. Both DnT tournaments used the restricted ruleset, as do 99% of records. Those rules ban things like safe-spotting, terrain glitching, etc. Gw2 is actually pretty strict when it comes to community policing of exploits. What pugs do in their daily runs doesn’t necessarily reflect the speed run community – pugs will take the path of least resistance and that includes safespotting mossman, one-shotting lupi with wall-on-wall, etc. […]

Thank you for clarifying that, the videos I watched from speedruns and tournaments where probably old or not using this ruleset. I admit I didnt spend a lot of time researching that topic. Sorry for that.

How is holding a cutscene an exploit?

If you’re so interested in making sure that you play dungeons “as they were intended,” then I’m confused as to why you would consider watching a cutscene as exploiting :P

When only a single player is watching the cutscene it can lead to players getting an upper hand on encounters.

[…]
So I think publicizing the exploits in the tournaments is not a bad thing, because it’s the only effective method we have to get ArenaNet to give a flying kitten about fixing their game.

That is a really good point, and it makes sense. But the problem is when the developer doesn’t do anything at all. I guess that’s the situation we are in right now.

Part 2

Dungeons & Exploits

  • As far as I know the speedrun community (in general, not gw2) has very specific rules on what is accepted or not. They have a category for people that do speedruns looking to break the game and use every exploit imaginable, and them one where people play the game the way it was intended.
On that note, how come in GW2 we allow both record and tournament runs to make use of those exploits, making them popular, creating this enviroment where people just assume that hitting through a wall with a dagger is normal, where holding a cutscene for the rest of the team is normal, where its normal to stay on a corner away from the mobs because they suddenly can’t reach or attack you anymore.
I see so many people complaining to new players that they can’t play, that they can’t even dodge, but how will they learn when all we are teaching is exploit after exploit? It’s not like the New Player Experience patch helped on this topic…
  • Is it even possible to fix this? Anet terms of service clearly says that, both use and sharing of exploits would be against the rules. Yet everything is so wide spread, so much that they probably can’t take any actions now.
  • Do you think it would be possible for Anet to fix these and start taking their own terms of service serious?
  • And last, should communities like Reddit, Forums, Youtube, Guide sites, take the fist step and stop teaching exploits, or does Anet needs to take the fist one?

If you read it this far, thanks for the patience, english is not my native language, so sorry in advance, I had a lot in my mind and, hopefully, it has come across well enough.

I’m also posting this on reddit to hopefully get a good discussion going with both the forum’s, and reddit point of view.
