They shouldn’t turn of WvW.

HOWEVER lag is bad for me now. Big fights I have more than a second, more like 2-3. Rubberbanding makes it near impossible to move with the commander well.

This is frustrating because for a while there I wasn’t having lag. Like September-December of last year or thereabouts I very rarely had lag problems. Now I have them regularly to the point where WvW is unplayable. What happened?

And it’s not my connection. I play TF2 fine with no lag on this same computer, same connection. And teamspeak is working fine even as skill lag gets worse and worse. It’s the Anet servers.

Nothing is more frustrating than killing your warden and regulator with like a minute to go, then looking over and seeing the pad next to you either wiped or obviously not on pace to get the champ down in time.

Why not let people move to another pad once they’ve killed the regulator? If there’s a group that’s doing well they’ll have 30 secs or however long to help the group next to them. If you’re worried that’ll make it too easy you can adjust the difficulty of the fights accordingly.

Every time there’s a full marionette main or overflow I get lag. Not just a little. Just now I died and it took me several minutes to waypoint. It’s not my connection. All other online games work fine. My teamspeak was working fine even as I was getting 20 seconds+ plus worth of skill lag, rubberbanding to the point where I can’t move, etc….

I wait two hours for a marionette and it’s unplayable due to lag, and this has happened not once but several times. What’s more, others in my guild and teamspeak are having similar issues. I assume this isn’t what you want, right?

You need to be realistic about what your servers can and can’t handle when you design content.

Looks like my predictions on SBI’s implosion, unsurprisingly, turned out to be true.

Now the only question remains how far will SBI fall? What was that about the epic heroic comeback to T1 SBI??

Terrible then, terrible now.

SBI beat FA fair and square on reset night.

We were winning by the end of the weekend.

If you are gloating about PPT go ahead, you get an average of 10k lead every day because of time zone gaps. But our NA can definitely match yours.

And if you really think having a lot of PPT is impressive, check out week 40, before leagues. SBI rolled FA by 70k

Yeah guys SBI is imploding

You were not winning by the end of the weekend. FA took its first lead 8am server time Sunday, back and forth throughout Sunday, and FA took the lead and held it just before midnight server time. The score is here: http://mos.millenium.org/servers/view/39/

Also, aren’t you kind of undercutting your own point? You beat us by 70k (is winning by 70k really “rolling”?) weeks ago, now you’re on pace to lose to us by roughly the same amount.

The zerging "problem"

in WvW

Posted by: Yougottawanna.7420

Yougottawanna.7420

One recurring theme on the WvW forums is the “problem” of zerging – the fact that large groups of players are often able to dominate maps in ways that smaller groups have no obvious way to counter. Periodically posters come up with ways to fix the problem, some of which are creative, some of which are shortsighted, but all of which are (in my opinion) misguided.

I definitely understand the frustration. I’ve been on Fort Aspenwood since beta, and Fort Aspenwood is a server that for months on end was sitting squarely in the middle of tier 2 – week in and week out we were matched up against either TC (a server that outnumbered us) or whichever tier 1 server was slumming in tier 2 that week (who outnumbered us by even more). What’s more, my favorite style of play is the havoc squad of 5 or so people. I’ve lost count of the number of times I’ve been WvWing and some 40 man murder train suddenly rounds a corner and rolls over me without even breaking stride. In fact my main has died over 1900 times, and probably the vast majority of them have been in WvW. I agree, it’s frustrating – but it’s not evidence that the game is broken.

A server’s WvW population consists of hundreds or even thousands of players. The likelihood that there’s going to be a significant difference in average individual skill between two groups that large is pretty low. So of course twenty people will tend to beat ten, and forty people will tend to beat twenty, and so forth. That’s not evidence of a broken game, quite the opposite. When two sides have access to the same gear, classes, skills, and builds, then numbers will be the deciding factor – but not the only factor. Anyone who’s run with a skill group knows that it’s possible for twenty people to beat forty. If the group of twenty takes initiative and ambushes, if they stack tightly, if they bomb decisively, if they use stability and water fields with good timing, then they can beat larger groups – not just occasionally but consistently. I’m not ashamed to admit I’ve been on the wrong side of such defeats more than once.

It’s true that the server with better coverage nearly always wins. But success in WvW is something we can define for ourselves. All those weeks where FA was matched up against tier one servers and losing PPT badly, my goal was to lose PPT by slightly less. When I’m outnumbered my goal is to use the strategy that can mitigate my numbers disadvantage by as much as possible. If you expect the developers to mitigate the fundamental advantage that superior numbers gives a server, you’re assigning them an impossible task. It’s never going to happen. Nearly every change that gives an advantage to the smaller side gives an even larger advantage to the bigger one.

But don’t think of WvW as something that has to be designed for you to win at least 50% of the time. Think of it as a puzzle to be solved. Beating a force that outnumbers me is the single most satisfying thing I’ve done in this game. The fact that it doesn’t happen that often just makes it sweeter when you pull it off. Before I played GW2 I played EVE. There’s an alliance in EVE called Rooks and Kings which has used creative tactics to beat larger (sometimes much larger) forces time and again. One of them was interviewed here: http://themittani.com/features/blaze-western-sky-0?page=0%2C0. In the interview he said something that I think is applicable to GW2 WvW:

“…a little of the politically correct safety culture has also encroached onto the mechanics themselves. In egalitarian fashion, everything must be equal to everything else, or people will complain, and so the game panders a bit to the masses, rather than standing aloof and mysterious as an imposing, cruel mountain, daring us to scale it. Everything has a clearly-labelled counter, and counters have obvious counters. Anything that doesn’t instantly find a place within this circle of betterment must be buffed or there will be angry threadnaughts.”

The reason that WvW is my favorite thing in GW2 is BECAUSE it’s often unfair. It’s a challenge to be overcome. If you want something designed to be fair then PvE is the place for you, not WvW. The zerging “problem” is not a problem at all – it’s what makes WvW uniquely interesting.

Those in overflows can still use the portal, in fact I suspect that the merchants are placed by people in overflows (or possibly people guesting from other servers). It doesn’t remove portal gamesmanship, it adds an additional layer.

How about not stacking on servers so you don’t have to deal with ques?

I’ve been on the same server since beta. What’s more, nearly every server has queues on reset night, not just stacked ones.

This merchant thing is obvious griefing, everyone. It should be fixed, not dismissed with snark. The fix isn’t even complicated.

I’m surprised to see so much criticism. First, there aren’t THAT many narrow areas, and it’s never been easy to knock a player off a ledge if that player is paying any attention at all. I’ve been in many fights on the bridge that leads to the north inner gate of hills and never been knocked off, and I can’t remember if I’ve ever successfully knocked an enemy off either. Maybe once or twice at most. And I don’t even have stability anywhere on my bar most of the time. I just avoid putting myself between another player and the edge.

Second, the “it looks like a PvE map” criticism makes no sense to me. Of course it looks like a PvE map when there’s only one person playing it.

As for overflows, as I understand it the map will create multiple overflows per server, and then match up those overflows by the current week’s matchup first, then pair extras off against servers outside of the matchup. So in matchup ABC, if A only has one overflow but B has two, B will be matched up against a server outside that week’s matchup if they have a spare overflow.

Personally I’m looking forward to playing this map.

I’ve been playing since release, and spent about a month doing two mystic forge combines on rare greatswords a day (total of ~480 greatswords), nothing. So I decided to just save up my money. After more than a year I have 650g, still not enough for a competitive buy order for Dusk. I can’t grind for hours a day like some people, and for a while the price of Dusk was going up faster than I could earn money.

Doesn’t it seem weird that a guy who’s been playing for a few weeks might, through random chance, have an item drop that’s worth more than what I’ve been able to save up in a year? I’m not a game designer but that doesn’t seem right to me.

I don’t think is due to higher populations. Reset night on FA generally has had all three maps queued all night since release for example, and there was never lag this bad before.

2. Class roles, specifically encouraging teamwork. GW2 ditched the holy trinity, which is fine, but it feels like nothing has replaced it. The current dungeon meta is “everyone is DPS,” which is not very deep tactically. Buffing support builds like you did is a good start but only a start.
3. More stuff for guilds to do. My favorite PvE content is stuff I can do with my guild, like guild missions, puzzles, and bounties, but they get repetitive after a while. Need moar plz.

1. Skill lag/lag in general. SMC captures often turn into 3-way fights that last forever, fights where only the #1 attack skill works reliably.
2. More maps/content in general. I was disappointed at launch that the borderlands maps were all identical, and a year later they still are.
3. Population balance. This is third not because it’s less important but because it’ll be the stickiest one to fix. Truth is that the server with more numbers is always going to have an advantage pretty much regardless of how WvW is designed.

I was in SMC twice today when we capped and then lost it, apparently to a Mesmer. Either TC knows a crazy good hiding spot or someone is glitching their way in. We had people combing that place top to bottom both times and both times it flipped shortly after we left without any attacks.

My main is a Mesmer and when we’ve had SMC before I’ve explored the whole thing looking for good spots to hide. I have four places I check, I checked all four both times, nothing (and when I check them I wait long enough for any stealth to expire, including swinging my sword around to see if it chains).

This to me is suspicious. If it’s someone hiding really well, then hats off but I suspect someone is using some kind of exploit.

I mean the thing where if you’re fighting a server, and they’re blue on the map, it recolors their armor so that it’s blue, or green if they’re green and red if they’re red.

Vanity is part of the game IMO and I’m disappointed that the enemy can’t see my fabulous dye job. I paid good money for those dyes. I’m not sure that recoloring the armor adds much – it’s not like I’m confused who I’m fighting or anything, they have red names above their heads and red = kill. Typically people don’t refer to enemy server by color either, they refer to them by name.

I would rather the recoloring weren’t there personally.

Someone I know had a good idea: have an item, or buff, or something, that makes you substantially less powerful. Like, it actually has negative stats (or something). But the tradeoff is that rewards are scaled upwards. For instance you talk to an NPC that sends your effective level 5 levels below whatever the zone is scaled to. Then you go to a 15-25 level zone and its very hard, as though you were trying to do it on a lv10 character, but the rewards are bumped upwards.

It would be like a version of GW1 hard mode. The people who want to do difficult content could do that, the people who just want to farm Cursed Shore can do that. It would also give an incentive for lv80s to revisit old zones.

Basically I think there are several ways to introduce (optional) more difficult content without having to make entire new zones or dungeons.

It’s true that you can be good in WvW in greens or whatever, but you’ll be even better in rares, and better than that in exotics. On an individual level one guy in exotics won’t make a huge difference when two zergs are fighting, but on a collective level, yeah, it makes a difference.

Here’s the thing: for me, WvW is the endgame. It’s what I want to do most. So I want to be as effective as I can – if this means increasing my individual skill level, fine, I’ll do that, and I get a little bit better at Mesmer every day (there are still things I feel like I can improve on – like I should use my dodges more judiciously, and make better use of the daze shatter). But another aspect of that is having the best gear, and if the “best gear” is constantly changing that’s an irritant for me.

They probably have a bunch of stuff balanced around ascended gear in the pipeline already. So ascended gear is gonna happen whether we like it or not. I can live with that if I have some reason to believe that there won’t be new tiers of gear constantly introduced. That would just kill my motivation, the knowledge that I’ll never catch up.

Amidst all the complaining about ascended gear I want to say one thing: everything else in the 11/15 patch looks good. The new zone looks very promising and I hope it’ll give more variety to lv80 world PvE. The mechanic about knocking armor off the new mobs sounds interesting. I like the lore and world design of Tyria and want to learn more and see more.

The fractal dungeon I think is a great idea. It’s almost like a mini-roguelike in the middle of GW2 or something. I love the concept of it.

Basically, everything but the new ascended gear looks great and I’m very much looking forward to it. It’s just this one thing, this fly in the soup, that sours my opinion. (assuming flies are sour, I’ve never eaten one)

Of all the things I wish would mercifully leave this debate, the canard that “ascended gear is between exotic and legendary” is the single biggest.

Based on what we’ve seen it is not between exotic and legendary, it’s above both of them. Legendaries and the equivalent exotic are equal statwise, whereas an ascended ring has better stats than the equivalent exotic. This is not “between” exotic and legendary in any use of the word I’m familiar with.

-the occasional tweet from an official source, with the characteristic whiff of condescension towards critics

I’ve seen this beast many times before. This is the behavior of a company that has insulated itself in a criticism-free bubble. Now it’s early still, this is not a terminal condition, they can still be cured. But the symptoms are already there.

So, people are not happy about the new ascended gear, I won’t rehash the complaints again, they’re all over the forum.

In the meantime, put yourself in Anet’s shoes: they have a patch coming out in two days. They’re all set up to go live with content that’s balanced around the new tier of gear; what’s more, for every one thing that they’ve announced, there are probably 3-4 more (maybe more) in the pipeline half done, all balanced around the new ascended gear.

At this late hour, just taking the gear out is not that feasible. So for me the next best thing is to take away the uncertainty. Here’s what I mean: I picked maybe the longest, hardest way to get exotics: WvWing for badges to buy invader’s gear. I’m still not done, and before I finish at least two pieces of that gear (the rings) are likely to be obsolete, maybe more. One of the reasons I chose the badge route is because I thought the gear would last me a while. My motivation to get ascended gear is gonna be hurt by the worry that by the time I’m half done the January patch (or whatever) will introduce new super-double-plus-ascended gear, and the closer I get to my goal the farther you’ll move it into the distance.

The solution in my eyes is to take away this uncertainty. Have Anet go on the record and say “ascended will be the highest tier of armor for the forseeable future.” Better yet give us a concrete amount of time, and make it long. I’m not against gear progression in principle. Maybe years down the road you release an expansion that raises the level cap and new gear will be necessary. But to do this three months after release is too soon.

Because right now, I have no reason to believe you won’t continue to add tiers. The fact that you haven’t said anything specifically about new tiers isn’t reassuring; this time last week I had no reason to believe there would ever be anything higher than exotic and here we are. What’s more, your reasoning – players were getting exotics and legendaries so fast we felt like we had to add a new tier – indicates that as soon as the hardcore get bored of one tier you’ll add another.

So take away this uncertainty Anet, please. You can continue to release what’s in your pipeline now – I’m assuming the plan is to release ascended gear piecemeal over several patches – but after that I personally would want some assurance that once released ascended gear won’t be obsolete again in another couple months.

This isn’t an ideal solution, but I think the time for an ideal solution to be feasible has come and gone. This is the next best thing.

I like WvW, and the WvW gear I want is Soldier’s (power/vitality/toughness). The only way to get some soldier’s exotic gear is with badges. So far I’ve bought a greatsword (396), 2 swords (264 each), and 2 accessories (330 each). Total cost 1604 badges. I have 6,284 kills in WvW (some of my badges came from jumping puzzles).

I still need 2 rings (396 each) and an amulet (528), total cost 1320 badges, I have around 1150 to go. So I’m really only like 2/3rds of the way there. And I WvW alot! I wouldn’t consider myself a casual player. I STILL don’t have full exotics. Now I see that there’s a whole new tier of gear. I’m not done getting exotics yet, and there’s a whole new tier coming in three days. (Not only that, but I bought my armor with karma and got the legs with Catacombs tokens. Getting the armor I want doing the thing I most like – WvW – would have taken even longer)

And what happens when I do get my ascended gear? By that time the hardcore players will have had it for a while, and be grumbling for more, and if Anet uses the same reasoning then they’re using now, it’ll be time to introduce a new tier of gear just as I get about 2/3rds of my ascended set.

What’s more, this is not a horizontal endgame progression, which is what we were sold. This is something we were explicitly told was NOT going to be in the game, and furthermore its absence was advertised as a feature! What happened to the Anet that made the manifesto video?

WvW is the heart of GW2 - How to reward it?

If I were Anet I would want to push WvW and expand it. The fundamental problem of MMOs (or at least one of them) is that no dev team can possibly create content as fast as players can play it. So the closest thing is to turn the grind up to 11 – for example the legendary weapon grind.

But PvP, and particularly mass PvP, is different – players in essence create their own content. Take EVE for an example, the “endgame” (at least the pvp one) is essentially crafted by the intrigue created by the playerbase. Now WvW is not exactly like EVE but there are similarities.

So I hope Anet devotes time to WvW. Spvp may pan out the way they want it and it may not, but in the meantime there’s so much untapped potential in WvW, they should be trying to tap it.

World Vs World.....In the Future! - some ideas

I wonder if it would be possible for servers to team up. For instance, have a US and an EU server be the same color, and they’d fight two other US/EU “teams.” This would probably require more or bigger maps, which brings me to my second suggestion: more or bigger maps.

Personally as an FA player this past week’s matchup has been the most fun one in a while, and I thought that even before we made our comeback in the past few days. I also think the Yaks generally plays well, for instance I didn’t know how effective defensive trebs could be until I saw them used to repel our sieges on their keeps. They also put ballistas down the cliff from their borderlands garrison trebs, which was a trick I’d never seen before and have since copied.

I’d be fine with playing YB again even if I knew we were gonna lose.

Badge Farm Prices?

WTF hell why not just make everything free.
Why is it that when a little effort is needed to gain something peeps always want it easier, they might as well go an play Tic Tac Toe or go make mud pies.
Come on folks they are at that price for a reason and if you can’t live with it go play something else

Love the blind replies. You do realize that people are ALREADY getting it easier by buying the power/vitality/toughness sets from pve? you know the same stats as the pvp ones. The badge gear is almost pointless, other than the jewelry stuff which again you can find pve substitutes, or the look which aren’t that great anyways.

Where can you get power/toughness/vitality exotic trinkets aside from the badge ones?

I disagree. Badges is easy to get if you are not zerging. It should stay the way it is.

If you running PvD with 30+ players there is no difficulty and honor to it. For what would you get that badge? For clicking “1” on your keyboard?

Running with 4-8 people reward you with more then 1 badges per kill, since sometimes i get 3-4 from one player. It depend on comparison of your force and enemy. If you win 8vs16 people you get a lot more badges then otherwise. Killing enemy if you have advantage of 10 to 1 would usually reward you nothing.

And about loot bags. Suck it, loot is for winners not whiners.

Wait, what? I’ve been WvWing regularly since release. I’ve earned around 1300 badges in that time, maybe 100 or so from the jumping puzzle and the rest from bags. Never once have I gotten more than two badges from one player.

What’s more I’ve also played in both small group and big zerg situations and noticed no difference in drop rates.

For people saying that there will be collusion and swapping, there isn’t right now, and you already get gold and karma for taking objectives. What’s more badges are account bound so I don’t see botting for badges as an issue. In fact of all the possible things you could try and get a bot to do, my guess is farming badges by taking objectives would be the single least practical.

If you compare how much effort it takes to get crafted exotics vs. how much effort it takes to get badge exotics, there’s no comparison, badge exotics are way harder, and I don’t see a good reason for this to be the case.

Even if you don’t like the idea of getting badges for WvW events, just up the drop rate. It seems to be about one badge for 5 kills right now, and that’s if you pick up all your bags. That’s too low if you ask me.

BT is good, I just spent a few hours earlier tonight taking Bay and then nearly taking hills (longest and most intense siege I’ve ever been in) and they used golems well and were good at quickly switching up which gates they hit.

ARG I was part of that assault on Hills. We worked like dogs for what like two hours? to zero out your supply while your defense trebs downed everything we put up. Then when we finally zero you out and had the inner gate below 50% at one point there’s no one left to take the kitten keep. All our guys just left or something, maybe it got too late on the east coast I guess.

Story of FA’s life I swear. When we have people we do well, it’s why we always do well on server switch night. But our dudes just stop showing up.

Just frustrating I guess.

I really like this matchup during NA primetime. FA was about 500 pts up when I logged a half hour ago, but the fighting was intense, probably the most intense sustained fighting I’ve seen on changeover night yet, which is saying something (I was on the Yak’s Bend borderlands).

I hope it’s not lopsided overnight because this is a great matchup so far. ET must have lost a lot of population or something because I rarely saw them.

I like this idea. Speaking for myself, I WvW quite a bit (almost 5000 kills now) and I’m still a long ways away from being able to afford my pow/tou/vit trinkets. I have four to go, total cost around 1200 badges, it’s looking pretty daunting at this point.

Compared to the other ways of getting exotic gear, badges are probably the slowest. It should be tuned a bit if you ask me.
