The problem with it is this: What if I don’t want to be a shadowy blob? What if I never even want to touch warlock skills as a Necro? Guess what? I’m now stuck with a useless ability, and there goes 1/5th of my traitline.
Did you see what I just did there?
Death Shroud doesn’t scale with power right, and doesn’t jive with condition builds at all. That’s why people don’t like it. I personally dislike it all together.
The crux of the issue is that Devs aren’t going to ‘fix’ DS because its ‘scary’. If they can’t handle the whole “second lifebar” aspect, then they should at least let our lifeforce do something. Preferably something that can occur concurrent with our normal attacks so it doesn’t work against our dps. Like a Rangers pet or a Guardians burning or a thief’s steal. Something easier for them to balance and more useful to us. Ideally it’s something that everyone can agree on from a stylistic view as well.
I can understand why someone wouldn’t want to be a shadowy blob, but there are still certain specs that use it, even if it is only for a damage soaker (conditionmancer). The main problem with the idea of minions is that knowing Anet, they won’t make them super strong and will probably be killed really easily.
DS is fine in terms of appealing to the class. What they need to do is make it appeal to most builds.
There are many problems with your idea…
For one, not everyone views a necromancer as just a dude who summons minions. This has been discussed multiple times on the forums, but i’ll shorten it for you. A necromancer is someone who practices arts of death (corruption, ghosts, zombies, etc.) so Anet got the “definition” correct.
Now for the actual mechanic itself…It’s not a good idea. The problem with it is this: What if i don’t want to summon a minion? What if i never even want to touch minions as a necro? Guess what? I’m now stuck with a useless ability, and there goes 1/5th of my trait line. The other reason is that this would kitten us hard in PvP. 5 kills to summon 5 tiny minions, that will probably be 2-3 shotted by any melee in a few seconds? And, by some occasion they live, i get a second Flesh golem-esque minion? No thanks, i’ll stick with death shroud.
It’s too bland and doesn’t appeal to the entire class but a specific portion of the class. Look at the other profession’s unique abilities, it appeals to all of them regardless how they play their character.
30 points in Deathshroud does not give extra 30% increase???

Hm, i’d like to test this out too. If this really is a bug then this is just sad, our mechanic that is supposed to be unique to us doesn’t even work in the trait line.
Gonna help this thread so Devs can see this issue and hopefully check it our or at least explain how this works.
Wait, just a question, this update is taking place in the new build coming out today? I’m excited but i won’t be able to play this weekend, so i wanna at least know.
Alright, i will explain it pretty simply for you: There is no endgame. Guild wars 2 was advertised as a game where there would be NOTHING different from 1-80. 80 wasn’t the magical level where suddenly there is a ton of stuff to do that you couldn’t pre-80.
There is no gear treadmill, meaning most level 80 exotics are almost identical in stats and really only differ in appearance.
So what can you do at 80? You can: Get map completion (explore all of the areas in the map. This is actually very fun, as if you carefully follow dynamic events rather than just doing one and then moving along and if you pay attention to the lore of each zone, then you can really get into it), Do spvp/tpvp or WvWvW, max crafting professions, try and craft legendaries, do all the dungeons in the game until you are bored of them, etc. There isn’t any hardcore end-game stuff. Doesn’t mean you can’t look like a super-kitten guy at the end of the game, it’s just that you won’t have to grind for months to do it.
This game is quite casual (compared to others). Like i said, guild wars 2 was never advertised to have a “big” endgame. I hit 80, still trying to get all exotics then i am going to work on map completion, etc. Still a ton of stuff to do and i actually had some fun doing 100% completion for a zone with a friend since i took my time to pay attention to the world around me. This game may not be your cup of tea, but you can come back anytime there is a content update.
How do you manage to actually get people to start the invasions? On my server very few people do them, so they barely progress and everyone else is just zerging it up on the DE’s.
When i ask for help and as to why no one is doing it, i get called a whiny kid who is self centered because he wants to get access to the merchant…
There pretty much already is a single-target dps weapon associated with draining life from opponents…the dagger. Problem is, the blood magic trait’s/life siphoning does not scale even remotely decent with healing, so going down blood magic trait line is almost pointless.
Also, i would rather not have abilities that drain my health in order to hurt people, since we already can get killed quickly.
I’m pretty sure each weapon has its own unique particle effects of some sort. Like for example, with bitfrost when you take it out and you start moving the staff-it creates a delayed-rainbow version of it (sort of like an after trail).
Some weapons were created how they were based on their name (bitfrost means rainbow bridge in some myth/language.). TBH i thought the bow’s looked kitten. Why? Because they look unique. I didn’t even notice the little pony thing on the short bow till i was done looking at all the other parts of it.
The weapons weren’t meant to look like the stupidly-gigantic-spikey-kitten weapons that most MMO’s (especially korean ones) make. They were just meant to be unique, if you don’t like it then don’t get it, there are plenty of other cool-looking weapons in the game.
Just found a bug, but want to see if anyone has any other problems with this one. I’ve tried it during combat and out, but it doesn’t seem to work.
The bone fiend’s second ability, Rigor Mortis, does not immobilize a foe nor does it deal damage.
There was a similar post like this, made by forice and how he was complaining that necromancers look too much like “vampires”. Here is a good response to pretty much every thread like this:
“Lifesteal is a staple of necromancy.
There’s supposed to be multiple types of necromancers, atleast with this Necro.
There’s your plague/curse Necro.
Your Blood (vamp/healing) Necro.
Your Corporeal (physical dead minions, corpse/bone stuff) Necro
Your Ethereal (spectre/ghost/spirit) Necro
And finally there’s the Shadowy type necro (Death Shroud) though this could fit with Ethereal too.” -Knote
You also need to keep in mind that there is no such thing as “actual” necromancy. It first of all has never been real. therefore through ideas and myths the “necromancer” has many various shapes and forms. Anet did a perfectly fine job in making the Necromancer (especially trying to make it non-evil, since the main bad-guys in this are undead).
you must not call me a troll. instead, you must thank for telling you those things most people like. they don’t even post a thread here. they just quitted gw2 in a month and tell everyone gw2 is lame. they don’t even complain about this game in this forum. i am only one brave person who is saying something is lame or funny and things that most people like here. here are only few people in this forum. developers must listen to the most people not only few people. at least conduct a poll about skeletons, zombies vs death shroud, stealing life in game or homepage.
Forice, this post and all of your other posts beforehand were extremely stupid and biased on your own opinion. You want the necromancer to be someone who summons an undead army. Cool. But that is what YOU want. I see you saying that everyone else wants this and that you are the “brave” soul to say it. Ok, tell me all the other thousands of people who want this rather than just you and a few other people i see on the necro forums complaining about it, because apparently all of you count as “most people”.
Also, Necromancers are technically anything that relates to or draws their power from death (plagues, curses, disease, etc. Summoning undead is one of many things they do). Not wanting to bring hate to this post, but the arguments and things he are saying are just…ugh….Necro is fine as it is (mechanics wise-e.g. we have abilities that are like necromancers).
If people are saying wells are fine, then i don’t think you have tried them in every single possible scenario. Keep in mind, developers said they would make changes to classes based on tPvP/sPvP and dungeons. They admitted that WvWvW is a huge zerg.
Hence, why it is easy to use well’s in WvWvW, since many people may not realize they are standing in them. They should definitely make wells use ground targeting- i don’t even know why they made it so that you must get within melee range of people to use them, that is just crippling (especially considering we are a light armored class and if we don’t trait into toughness we are quite weak). The OP made the other point- it is hard to keep people trapped in wells. Even if you do put down marks, people can just evade over the wells, that’s literally how small enough of a radius it is. Even assuming they go over them, they will only take 1 or 2 pulses, making the rest of it extremely useless considering that the CD is HUGE. Even if you miss the wells, like the OP said, you will still have a benefit in standing in them.
+1
I have been having huge considerations whether or not to re-roll. I love the idea and concepts of the necromancer…but they are so weak, frail, and bland compared to other classes that it makes me just cry :c
I really hope the dev’s do something about this soon, i’d rather not wait months for the class to be fixed up. This post and other’s around the necro form list out the big problems we have.
Are you guys kidding me? My necro DESTROYS in spvp. People literally COMPLAIN to me that I’m so OP.
I’m running a dagger build similar to this one:
ALSO: You guys probably are not abusing Death Shroud enough. It has more uses than you think. That video shows many uses of it.
I don’t know what you guys are smoking, but I tear things apart, and hold points like a boss.
I see so many people complaining about the Necro. They are a strong class. You probably just don’t like their mechanics is all.
That guy had only 3 1v1’s in which in the middle of the fight a teammate came in every single one. Not to mention those players were also missing a lot of their skills. TBH, this isn’t a good example. A better example would have been a tourney or something else along those lines.
Trust me, the other day i was destroying with a build somewhat similar to the one in the video. I felt pretty darn good about myself. Then i ran into people who knew what they were doing, and i got my butt handed to me because of how much more effective they were. There is a big difference between a unskilled player and an averagely skilled player.
This is what I’ve experienced about a necromancer. Keep in mind i played them in two BWE and my main is a level 52 necromancer.
They are broken, under-powered, and tasteless. Three short-simple words that make up the entire class. Most of what i just said has already been stated but i just want to add my own opinion.
Broken: Can’t really get even more specific than this. There are a TON of mechanics that don’t work right now at the moment for necromancer. I’m not going to go through a list, but just browse through the necromancer forums and you will find many topics like these.
Under-powered: We are the weakest class. Enough said. I’ve tried every single build in sPvP, every other class trumps me (unless i manage to gain an upper-advantage via positioning or some other variable). Likewise in PvE, every other class destroys things faster. One could say that we are supposed to “be annoying to kill and spread conditions like no other”. This is wrong, dead wrong. The first thing, is that we aren’t annoying to kill. Every class can just rip us to pieces in a few seconds. We only have ONE viable build, and half of the benefits you gain from it don’t even work! Our condition damage is just bad too, plus the fact that we have ABSOLUTELY NO BURST makes our class just a joke. When i see people say that a necromancer is supposed to kill people over time and win via conditions i cringe. What is the point of conditions if they do little to no damage, and our abilities have too long of cooldowns to put them back up? Not to mention we have virtually no crowd control (warriors have so many knock-backs its stupid) and some classes can remove conditions or just negate them entirely?
Tasteless: Basically we are REALLY plain. When i look at an elementalist’s skill set, it looks really cool and fun. Even with daggers, you whip a chain of lightning at people. With a dagger on a necro? You just stab them and gain a cool little slash effect. Oh yeah, and on the third strike you get a crunch. Neat. But then pretty much everything else, save a few skills on the scepter and axe, are the same. All our wells are similar, our 5 abilities on staff just make me cry at their blandness and uselessness, and minions are just a -no- for now. I will admit some things look cool like spectral armor or necrotic grasp, but they are either too buggy or are not used enough to actually make our class feel like what it is. Even our class mechanic, Death Shroud is plain. I mean, i atleast expected it to have different abilities depending on what weapon you had out when you used it! But no, same o’l 4 abilities. 2 of which are useless.
Overall, i agree with the OP. We don’t feel like a man who is one with death and leeches life from his foes and who is supposed to be the unholy mage…. We feel like a kitteny little mage who gets facerolled by everything and struggles just to keep up.. I feel like this class was really ignored during beta. I saw so many things about ele, warrior, guardian, etc and all the attention they were getting (positive or negative) but saw little about the necromancer.
This class needs some serious love right now.
