Thanks for the effective power explanation. It is indeed useful and I used it under a different name in the past.
Yes but staff’s dps is dependent on a carefully executed rotation (of skills, not attunements) to have its dps be optimal. This imply that you will not have 100% lava font uptime.
As for the dps, as you can see in the latest version of my Zalcualtor, LH’s damage can reach 14k, while staff’s damage can only reach 12k (on a human size target).
Note however that a combination of both is very very good.

Yes, he has a point, staff is interesting. But he keeps saying that staff out dps LH and it is wrong. I have proven this many times.
He is also not that accurate on figures, and he does not take rotation into account.
Finally:
Switch to Earth Attune when you aren’t in combat. You can lead with Eruption then switch to Fire and cast Lava Font in the same place for a furyblast. This works even if you cancel the Eruption with the attunement switch; you don’t get the damage from Eruption but you still get the blast finisher.
I hope I am reading this wrong.
Edit: What in Komir’s name is effective power?? What do people use it for??

I think they should add a bonus level when you reach fractal 80.
Once a day instead of the level 80 fractal you would enter a flat land full of frightened dredges with 1 hp running away from you in slow motion, you would be given a big fat hammer that makes a huge blood bath animation every time you smash a dredge into the ground. There would be a 5 minutes time limit for the level (no goal) at the end of which you would be given 50 silver for each dredge murdered. A bonus 30 silver would be awarded for each children or female dredge kill as a reward for putting an end to their breeding potential.

The fractal level has to be at least 28.
No consumables allowed apart from nourishment.

This is the time and place where you can engage the best players for a friendly test of your skills and imagination.
The Ascension Challenge is a very simple concept, there is a Challenge Master, he defines a Challenge and anyone can try to beat it to claim the title and become the Challenge Master instead of him.
To achieve a challenge you have to beat the test defined by the challenge master exactly in the terms that he has stated. You have to provide a video for proof. The community then decides if you have properly performed, and in the end it is the challenge master who validates or invalidates your achievement. If your claim is approved then you become the challenge master and you have to define a challenge. You can be as creative as you want when designing challenges (group solo, traits, camera angle .. you name it). The point is not to make it impossible, but to make it interesting and entertaining.
This project is designed to have a chain of challenges rolling. It is meant to be accessible to anyone, everybody gets a shot! To make sure of this, please design challenges that are simple yet crazy, and accessible yet entertaining. Winners get their names on the scoreboard, and at the end of the season a special prize will be give to who ever comes on top: the Ascended

“Embracing the Cold”, 23rd of September 2013:
Kill Frost in Caudecus Manor explorable path 1
- Melee only, no ranged weapons/summons/minions/phantasms or attacking from range allowed at all, any weapon is fine
- No form of condition removal or -X% condition duration food allowed(Other nourishments are fine)
- Racial Utility/Elite skills only(Healing skills are your choice, only healing skills that also remove conditions aren’t allowed for this)
- No Projectile reflection/absorb skills(Warrior shield/sword block and guardian shield 5 are an exception)
- Must fight him in his spawn-area, no using line of sight to move him away/to ignore rocket turrets
Current solo challenge

“On His Level”, the 23rd of October 2013:
Fight and defeat the Berserker Abomination “on his level”
- no armor
- no utilities/elite (healing is fine unless you want the extra challenge)
- no tranquilizer guns
- only one main hand melee weapon allowed
- optional: you may have 1 ranged weapon on swap for the berserker states, if so, only auto attacks may be used and it must be swapped back to your melee option within a reasonable time of the berserker state ending (5~ seconds)
- Since Engineer’s lack a melee option, they can use the Tool kit’s first 3 attacks for their melee option and switch to rifle/pistol when the Abomination enters the berserker state.

You are likely waiting for a way to keep yourself interested in the game. Well I have good news for you: you are not alone. The Ascension Project team is taking care of this for you
You may have noticed that many people around here are willing to contribute to make Guild Wars 2 a fascinating experience. These people have met and exchanged views. It appears we all share a common gaming philosophy. We have decided to work together, and with who ever will want to join us, to achieve three ideas:
- Promoting skilful game-play.
We enjoy “beautiful play”: the display of talent, the clever tactics. We want to see the best players at work and dream with envy while watching them. - Maintaining creative content.
There are countless areas of the game left unexplored. We want to get there, and show that we can master them all. We want to be innovative, and come up with crazy ideas. - Entertaining the community.
It is all about fun! No one has any personal interest in this. Our intention is to enjoy our time here with the community and for the community.
It is an ambitious project. We have many plans to achieve our goals. More ideas are coming in every day, and they are not getting any less crazy. We are an open team: anyone sharing our philosophy and willing to contribute can join our growing collaboration. Coordination is key in order to achieve our goals without loosing sight on any of our numerous projects.

Getting closer to the Gods, seeking their guidance, such is the meaning of Ascension. Many heroes have tried and the tales of those who succeeded are few, for the blessing of the Gods is not bestowed upon the undeserving. Long is road to greater power.The temptation is subjugating, but the path is obscure. We are not prepared.
Whether we believe in the Gods or or not, what they stand for is undeniably an ideal. Even the most unspiritual of the Asuras, that is me, will concur. What ever your faith, or your understanding of the Eternal Alchemy, you must acknowledge the wisdom and the sense of purpose that rests within the pantheon.
How to get there is unclear, but we know that we will have to face trials.
We will have to be on our mettle. Some say the greatest of all challenges may come from within ourselves … This is not something to take lightly. We have done many mistakes in the past. We have been corrupt and false. We have failed repeatedly. But the day will come when we will have our chance, and I hope we will know how to seize it.
For now we must train. We must train for everything. We must be prepared!

I’ll do the test this evening.
Apart from the obvious 30/0/0/10/30 for warriors, what spec should I look into including in my calculator?
I am also adding a build comparator in the calculator. In the future, when I have added all the classes I intend to make a “Group overview” tab showing the dps of each member and the buffs the group is getting etc.

Yes you need to assume perma burning in order to make fire traits desirable for damage itself (obviously the trait line is desirable for persisting flames). But if you take the stats and the modifiers (300 power, two 0.05 mods on burning ) compared to only the stats of the air trait line then you get a slightly lower increase to damage under full buffs.

I have calculated a first figure for the dps of a staff + LH rotation:
build: 30/20/10/10/0 staying in fire (cd reduction in for fire, no conjurer)
rotation: lava font,meteor shower, fireball, lava font, conjure LH, swing 5 times (until charges run out), lava font, 4-5 fireballs.
dps: around 13k
Fire field uptime: 50%

I haven’t run the numbers yet, but it seems to me that a duo of two elems with persisting flames staff and hammer would not only cap the group in fury, might, but also deal incredible dps.

Just to let people know, this is just the beginning of the project, we have ambitious plans for the future
We are waiting to see how willing people are to defeat the challenges and come up with new one. Then we will introduce exclusive challenges with exclusive rewards.
When I talk about exclusive rewards I am not just talking about the fame and glory you get from completing challenges and having your name on the scoreboard for the community to admire your feats of strength, I am also talking about more tangible rewards such gold!
Many guilds are already involved with the Ascension Challenge, but we are looking for a broader audience. We believe this is a fun way to spend time in game with your friends or with amicable strangers. Should you have any remarks regarding he organisation or anything about the Challenges please let us know.

Thanks for telling me about the LH trick, I didn’t know that.
The optimal LH build is: 0/25/25/20/0
It does around 14k dps (quite more when arcane lightning and bolt to the heart are active)
Guang there is definitely an issue with the way you are doing your calculations because your numbers actually are on the low side and yet you find figures that are too high for staff and too low for LH.
- Lava font has an animation time of 0.4
-Meteor shower is worth casting
-You have to use bloodlust sigil and force, not accuracy (no specifics like night)
-You have to use scholar runes, not ruby orbs
With all this I find 12k for the staff, and yes this includes a 5% difference for weapon tier.
Maybe if you can show me how you do your calculations I can see where we differ. As for me I have showed you the rotation that I use to calculate staff’s dps.
