New Races in the future?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Honorable mention goes to the Centaurs, who were apparently in development as PCs early on, but are too much of a pain to animate in certain situations, and who would require major redesigns of all clothing below the waist and about half of all chest armor too, without even considering what would happen to the Foot slot for a race with hooves.

No, no, no, no, no!

Centaurs would top my wish-list. GW2 is, after all, the self-proclaimed “MMO Revolution.” It’s time to throw off the yoke of biped character model oppression!

Also Krait.

staff...worth it?

in Elementalist

darkace.8925

Let me start by saying I’m primarily an open-world PvEer, so the staff may very well be more useful in dungeons, PvP, or WvW (I can certainly see it having it’s uses in zerg vs zerg).

I’ve got five characters at 80, the last of which to get full exotic gear was my elementalist. I took him for a Southsun karka-farming test-run yesterday, and I feel as though I’m working twice as hard as my other characters to get the same results. I’ve got to attunement jump and chain-skills together to do the same damage my other characters do with minimal effort and I’m not nearly as durable any of them. Now it’s not as though I didn’t expect to have to attunement jump to maximize effeciency; I just didn’t expect all that work to equate to such ho-hum results.

So against tougher mobs I’m working harder to get the same results as my other characters. Against trash mobs fireball spam is all that’s required, and that’s as interesting and engaging as it sounds (i.e. not very). And the the scarcity of densely packed mobs against which my AoE-strengths can shine means the one thing that’s supposed to set this character apart from my others rarely comes into play.

All in all, as a PvEer I’m finding the staff to be underwhelming. What about you?

PS – Now I know some people believe the staff is supposed to be the elementalist’s support weapon; but I disagree (in part). The lack of weapon swapping means every weapon set an elementalist can equi kitten upposed to be capable of filling more than just one role. The damage is there, it just takes a lot more effort than other professions to achieve.

a 5-man instance was really the thing that made the most sense for us to pursue, as it enabled us to best tell the conclusion to this story arc in the way that we wanted.

That sounds all well and good, but it kinda falls apart the first time someone joins a PUG with that guy who votes to kick someone because they actually want to watch the cutscenes.

Why should players now get an easy shortcut to world?

Because it was a bad design? Whether or not it actually is is up for debate, but what you’re advocating is this, “because those who came first had to suffer through a poorly designed feature, everyone should.” It doesn’t matter what the feature is, if ANet deems it poorly implemented and declares an intent to rectify it you’re saying they can’t because someone else already had to suffer through it in its current iteration and thus so should everyone else.

As a citizen of Blackgate, I’ve seen nothing but Jade Quarry for weeks and months on end. And they’ve always – always – got a group of people camping Obsidian Sanctum. That jumping puzzle looks hard enough without the Gank Squad waiting to troll me.

To TC, this topic has been broached many, many times and the answer from ANet is always the same…silence. In that silence I think it’s fair to read “no changes are planned.”

If your goal is to “max a character out” (i.e. you’re interested in the destination), then playing multiple characters is only going to slow you down. Otherwise (i.e. you’re interested in the journey), playing multiple characters at once can be quite enjoyable.

Personally, I played one character of each race simultaneously, and each was built to play different than the rest. The difference in play style and the difference in locations meant I could continuously switch between them without burning out on leveling or world exploration.

another thing is queensdale is the least centaur raided zone, its an actual human krytan zone….though the east side of kessex hills is still nice….the west side had its beauty destroyed by centaurs….and genderran fields is just awful with the amount of centaur camps desecrating the land

i think thats why i prefer queensdale to the others

I’d thought about that, too. Quiet time in Queensdale feels like a time to relax and unwind a bit. Quiet time in the other zones feels like a time to rebuild the defenses in preparation for the next centaur raid.

A large part of the reason, at least for those who’ve also played Guild Wars: Prophecies, may also be that Queensdale is the closest thing in GW2 to GW1’s pre-Searing Ascalon in terms of looks, feel and serenity, all of which was lost forever after the Searing.

I never thought of that. I assumed my sense of nostalgia was because my first character was human, making Queensdale my first zone. But you may very well have just hit on something with that.

This week, when ANet released more unrelated trivia in the upgrade to SAB, I got livid. I paid 80 bucks for a special addition of a game in 2013 and now they spend their work time re-creating a flat-dimension game from the 1990’s.

Setting aside your misconception of “their work”, you seem to be implying that they should only work on content you like. There are more people than yourself playing Guild Wars 2. And believe it or not, not all of them like the same sort of stuff. ArenaNet is well within their right to work on aspects of the game that others enjoy, even if you do not.

darkace.8925

what do you like about queensdale?

I’m not sure. I thought it was because of the environment. The grass just seems a little greener, the sky a bit bluer. The perpetual overcast in Kessex Hills just saps the joy out of the zone for me. But I enjoy Lost Shore despite its drab color palette.

Then I thought it might be the pockets of serenity; the pond by Claypool, the Hunter’s Lodge in Queensforest, and Edna’s Orchid are great examples. But other zones have equally relaxing locales.

As mentioned by Marcus Greythorne, it could be the number and variety of events. From bandits raiding farms to trolls rampaging the countryside, there’s never a shortage of fun events in which to play. But, again, Queensdale hardly has the monopoly on Dynamic Events.

Ultimately, I think it’s the community. The traffic in Queensdale is never lacking. And I’m guessing that, more than anything, is the reason I enjoy it so much more than the others. That’s probably why I enjoy Lost Shore, too.

Thank you for the replies, I think I will try both of your suggestions, play the dailies on the higher level characters and delete and create lower ones until I Find something I want to stick to

Bear in mind that playing the same content (low level zones, in this case) repeatedly can, with some players, lead to burnout. And if you’re going to be deleting characters often, remember to bank their gear and money and spend their karma on something account-bound that your other characters can use (i.e. salvage kits, gathering tools, etc).

Play each of the characters you enjoy equally. Every time you log in, do so on a different character. Or log in on whatever character best helps you complete the Daily Achievements. If your warrior is in Kryta, and your Elementalist is in Ascalon, play the warrior when the Daily requires 40 kills in Kryta and the Elementalist when it requires 4 events in Ascalon.

Rangers have access to Barrage, Muddy Terrain and Spike Trap for AoE cripple and Frost Trap for AoE chill. I don’t know how their damage compares to that of a thief’s short bow, as I only used thief’s SB to tag mobs during DEs.

I tried to play wow, and the normal hotkey bars were enough for me. I find the notion that you NEED mods to play a game more effectively ridiculous.

Personally, I deplore that game in large part for the very reason you’ve mentioned. I’m all for a very small number of skills on a skill bar and a clean UI, I just wish we had more flexibility in how we constructed our characters.

Because they want to show everyone how “kitten” they are. Other than that, I can think of no logical reason to impose your desire to duel on people who don’t want to see or hear dueling.

GW2 isn’t the only game with this problem. Trash mobs are trash mobs, if you can run past them, usually people will. If mobs held aggro longer/further, you would see this kind of thing disappear.

I’ve wondered why they haven’t implemented a system wherein every trash mob killed increases your odds of rolling better loot from chests by a percentage large enough to entice players to fully clear dungeons but not so large that clearing dungeons becomes mandatory.

the thing is not doing what they’ve done
- making access to crafting harder
- adding competition for gathering (when a node is gathered by anyone it will disappear)
- crafting not giving exp
would have regressed this MMO back. A lot of people love the fact that we all can gather (myself included), because we remember just playing with a friend and having to chose different gathering professions so we wouldn’t steal each others stuff. Or at higher levels camping a node spawning point and trying to be the first one to get there when it respawns. So while it’s partially their fault if it wasn’t done this MMO would be less satisfying.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m not saying I disagree with the direction they took crafting. I personally would have limited each character to just two crafting disciplines, but I actually like that there’s no competition for crafting nodes and that crafting gives experience. All I’m saying is ANet shares an equal share in the blame when it comes to the economy with regards to crafting.

well it’s just how economic ended up at this point. It’s not Anet’s fault. All players are responsible for it. And besides, if you get an exotic drop you’re going to sell it cheap because it cost you nothing to make.

It’s not entirely ANet’s fault, but it is partially their fault. They designed the game. They decided to remove competition from resource gathering. They decided to give all characters access to all crafting discipline. This has made it very easy for players to use crafting solely as a means of gaining experience, which in turn has lead to a glut of finished goods on the Trading Post.

As stated previously, it can happen in a controlled and tasteful manner. I completely agree and understand where you are coming from though. I never want to experience a Goldshire again.

Goldshire is exactly what comes to my mind every time someone requests dueling. As you say – and I’ve said previously – PvE can be insulated from dueling if it’s implemented. yeah rising duck forgot to mention that, ofc you get the amulet first but after that spend laurels for 3 t6 mats per laurel, if you get 3 powerful blood thats 95s right there for 1 laurel

From a purely money standpoint, that’s a long stretch. The odds of getting three bloods is .2, if I’m not mistaken. I would imagine the odds of getting an exotic from the equipment box are significantly better than that.

But either way, even if I did get the T6 material bags I’d save them for the Gifts necessary for a Legendary weapon. Like I said, I have everything I need.
