But seriously. Do you even lift bro? Don’t seem like you lift, lul.

Thanks for proving my point. You can’t even have a discussion about GvG without showing your immaturity and talking trash with those who disagree with your point of view. And you’re going to have us believe you’ll behave better when it comes to actual competitive GvG?

WvW hardly builds any rivalry.

Someone should tell these guys that WvW doesn’t build rivalries.

Isn’t this essentially dueling on a larger scale? Either, way it’s going to lead to braggarts and trash talking, two things that don’t do anything to better a community; so I vote no.

No, and you making that comparison is laughable. Trash talk is part of PvP, thinking that it won’t exist in GW2 just says loads about your PvP experience. As if we didn’t have trolling hubs in game either way. AKA Lions Arch. There’s only one purpose behind trash talk from rival guilds and it’s to build rivalry and that’s quite healthy for PvP.

Like I stated before, if you don’t want to engage in the open war PvP then you do not have to as it shouldn’t be anything to PvE other than a side show which i’m pretty sure you’d all watch, even if you didn’t like PvP. For the guilds who do participate they can start rivalries, develop good role play, and eventually instigate skirmish and mass pvp in solid PVE areas that have massive terrain, and offer alot of value to fight over.

It’s a win for the PvP crowd, and a good way to influence the PvE crowd to do both.

We’ve already got an in-game system that builds rivalries while building sindividual servers’ communities. Your proposal will do much to tear that community apart as GvG drama kicks in…and it will kick in. But I can already tell you’ve convinced yourself your idea is foolproof, so I’ll step aside and let you do your thing.

Destiny's Edge vs Kralkatorrik

in Lore

Posted by: darkace.8925

darkace.8925

That’s not Kralkatorrik. The Blazeridge Steppes loading screen shows The Shatterer surrounded by, I presume, Branded Lieutenants (the veterans that show up during The Shatterer’s event).

I didn’t realize that. But either way, he’s said to be the size of a mountain. Even allotting for hyperbole, he’s going to be massive. And I’ve fought Glilnt; she was large, but she was far from being the size of the Shatterer. She was also far from powerful. A party of eight could take her down. A party of eight might be able to take down the Shatterer, but it would take forever. It is stands to reason The Shatterer is nothing compared to its creator.

He did use his power, but they were able to avoid his corruptive breath

Looking at the scale of the Brand, I don’t know how anyone could plausibly dodge his corruption. You can’t just climb into a refrigerator to shield yourself from a nuclear blast. And while Kralk’s breath isn’t a nuclear blast, it’s going to take one hell of a dodge roll to get out of its area of effect. Unless Kralk didn’t actually try to use his breath to corrupt them, I don’t see how they could have avoided it. And if he didn’t use his breath, why not?

I understand a suspension of disbelief is required to enjoy any fantasy writing, but I just can’t see DE (with Glint’s help or without) realistically surviving an fight with any Elder Dragon if it actually wants them dead without heavy use of plot armor and Saturday morning cartoon buffoonery on the part of the ED.

Addressing a major flaw in the game

There are three reasons I don’t see a change to drop rates coming anytime soon.
A) They’ve got a financial incentive to ensure players can’t buy everything in the Gem Shop with gold.
B) Making farming a slow process gives some players a reason to keep playing.
C) A lot of people have put in a lot of time to get stuff like Legendary weapons. If the bar to get these prestigious items is suddenly lowered, they’re going to feel cheated.

I’d like it if T6 mats were easy to obtain, I just don’t think that’s going to be a reality any time soon.

Another thing is as you level, your armor and weapons you craft could get more slots for insignias and inscriptions. Like lvl 1-30 gear has 1 slot, 31-60 has 2 and 61-80 has 3.

Exactly. And I personally would be against stacking the same attribute. If a person wants to tank, let him take Toughness, Vitality, and Boon Duration instead of Toughness x3. If a person wants to heal, let him take Healing, Boon Duration, and ??? instead of Healing x3.

Logan was likable in the Edge of Destiny book. I wouldn’t say he was cool, but he wasn’t whiney, pathetic and annoying. The author at least tried to make him feel like a hero.

He abandoned his comrades in their most dire moment of need because he missed his girlfriend. If that’s not pathetic, what is?

Read the book, learn the story, before you know what you comment on :P

He didn’t run away willingly. Since Queen Jennah was in danger.

Queen Jennah basically put a mind control spell on Logan in the book. Whenever she needed him, he were forced to come to her.

I know what happened.

Looking at it from the lore, Logan was weak for being so susceptible to mind-controlling magic. Looking at it from the game, Logan was a fool for not having a way to cleanse conditions.

Destiny's Edge vs Kralkatorrik

in Lore

Posted by: darkace.8925

darkace.8925

I haven’t read Edge of Destiny, but I know the gist of what happened. But I find it very, very difficult to believe anyone would have survived this showdown.

Kralk is described to be the size of a mountain. In the Blazeridge Steppes loading screen, Kralk is large enough to crush The Shatterer in the palm of his hand, and The Shatter in turn is large enough to crush a human/norn/charr/etc with the tip of his finger. How is it Kralk didn’t simply squish the DE members and get on with his day?

And Kralk possesses the power to corrupt life and land for a stretch of miles and miles. Even if we’re to believe Kralk couldn’t just physically smash Destiny’s Edge, we’re also supposed to believe he couldn’t or wouldn’t use his immense power…power enough to rival a god…to wipe them from the face of Tyria?

I understand fiction, particularly fiction of the fantasy genre, often has plot armor. But DE must be strutting around in Plot Armor +5 if they walked away from a showdown with Kralkatorrik with so few casualties.

As it is now, X number of Y blood makes a berserker’s inscription/insignia. Said inscription/insignia always has Power as the primary attribute, with Precision and Critical Damage as the secondary attributes.

I would have preferred if inscriptions/insignias were separated into major and minor and only ever tied to a single attribute. This means we’d have some freedom to customize which attributes appear on our weapons and armor.

So say you want what is currently a berserker’s weapon. You’d use a major inscription of Power, a minor inscription of Precision, and a minor inscription of Critical Damage, plus a blank version of the finished weapon.

But if you wanted something currently unattainable, you could mix and match freely. Each material type could be tied to one of the nine attributes (ten if you count AR).

There would probably need to be an intermittent crafting step to accommodate three insignias/inscriptions in the discovery panel, and naming of items would need to be tweaked to reflect the primary attribute only, but I’d have preferred it this way.

First, it’s exactly what I called it as. Instead of offering a useful, rational example, some posters would rather just throw out random garbage, rathen then put in the least amount of effort to offer up something meaningful.

Your “useful, rational example” is just as much “random garbage” as what anyone else has said. Making numbers up, even if you’re attempting to do so logically, to prove a point or support an argument is a wasteful endeavor because it proves nothing. It’s baseless speculation.

Second, the steadily rising gem -> gold exchange would lead one to belive there are plenty of players out there with more then enough gold to convert to gems to make gemstore purchases (perhaps as an investment tool as a secondary reason). And it rises like clockwork each time new store items are made available. And further, you can’t just dismiss that they won’t without mentioning price. After all, price is going to be a major factor in how players pay for those gems items.

Something you don’t appear to be accounting for is inflation. Yes, the price of gems is increasing; but so is the price of everything else. There’s more gold in the economy than there used to be. Accordingly, gold is worth less now than it used to be. It’s simple economics.

Hahaha, this is the attitude that made games like EQ2 and SWToR a ghost town ( TOR obviously had issues other than fanboys). I’m sure the 17 people sitting in LA in 2 years will take solace in the fact that they ran every other type of player out of the game.

It’s the same 4 or 5 people objecting to reducing/removing RNG and adding more skins, yet the more I read people upset with the RNG on the gem store the more names I see fed up with it.

These threads really speak for themselves, all you have to do is look through them. I look forward to Anet’s eventual response

You’re projecting a awful lot of person animus, here. Just because YOU dislike this or that about the game, or the game as a whole, doesn’t mean it’s dying. You may want it to die, but the fact is plenty of people are still enjoying the game. Sucks for you, I know, but that’s just the way it is.

GW2, exploiting vulnerable demographic?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

huh? if anything, the RNG in the cash shop targets those who have money to burn.

Poor people gamble for that small chance that they’d win and pull them out of poverty. Gambling for items in some video game cash shop, with no real world monetary value, won’t ‘pull you out of poverty’, and is just a complete waste of money, money that a poor gambler would rather spend on some lottery ticket.

This is by fact incorrect, RNG makes the item special, directly playing into the feeling of “maybe i’ll get lucky”, and the restraint to stop with this often disappears with the lower class. It’s not so much about gambling rather then having something special to them, and that’s the danger, they don’t see it as gambling. Putting a few as drops in the game even enforces this feeling more.

You often see how people in said demographic have a nice car or nice clothes while living in total misery at home, it’s the act they want to keep up, and that’s focussed on having something special. This feeling translates into games aswell.

Wait, are you now saying the “I want to be a special snowflake” line of thinking is one exclusively found among poor people? Please tell me I read that wrong. Either way, this thread is getting more and more ridiculous each time you guys post; so I’m out.

I’m saying that these tactics are targetting vunerable people, getting out of poverty is hard enough without having these tactics around in the general market, and a game that applies these strategies is imo just wrong.

If someone wants out of poverty they’re not going to achieve that end if they lack the basic self-control to refrain from purchasing lottery tickets whose only payouts are virtual cosmetic items. Blaming ArenaNet for this fact is just silly.

I’m dead set against 3. If everyone has access to all crafting disciplines, and many take advantage of the experience offered by them, we wind up with a glut of finished goods that far surpasses the demand (in most cases). I wish we’d been limited to two crafting disciplines per character. This would (theoretically) increase the demand for finished goods and thus make crafting a more profitable venture.

The majority of players really think that they are getting a F2P game after they B2P. And, they will defend to the death the model without ever noticing that they are being extorted in the process.

You make some fair points, but I have to object to this insinuation that I’m being extorted and I’m just too ignorant to see it. Yes, I did get a F2P game after B2P. The game is everything I want it to be. I’m not defending the model to death because I’m blind, I’m doing it because, for me, it’s been fantastic. Please point out where I’m being extorted if I’m getting all the game content I want from launch and updates and I have no interest in these mini pets and limited time weapon skins.

Yeah, his argument just kind of fell apart with that statement. He/she speaks as if the game used SWTOR’s F2P model…as if all quality of life features (Trading Post, Way Points, Bank Access, etc) are locked behind Gem Shop purchases. This is the sort of defense of this practice i see a lot on here. It’s not about having to have the items, it’s about wanting to have them. Comparing real life luxury items, with in game items is really a bit silly, don’t you think?

No, I don’t. I see no difference at all in the purchase of real life luxury item and a virtual luxury item. And cosmetic skins are just that, luxury items. I don’t like the rng system any more than you do, but let’s not pretend these cosmetic skins are required to enjoy the game.

I agree with most of what you said, but you worded that last line incorrectly. They are not required to be SUCCESSFUL in the game, but whether or not they are required to enjoy the game is 100% subjective. For some players, aesthetics are a big part of a game and if they find an aesthetic they desire for their character and have no valid way of attaining that item, it can indeed kill their enjoyment of the game.

It would be like a raider being told there is a raid in the game and they have a random chance of getting to play it. You might be thinking “That’s different. That’s actually playing!”. No, it isn’t. That’s what a raider enjoys doing. Aesthetics is what others may enjoy. The way you are thinking about aesthetics, I am thinking about that raid. Me being able to enter that instance doesn’t affect my enjoyment in any way, shape or form, so I wouldn’t care if it was RNG.

Anet added this RNG in with super low chances knowing full well that it would kill the enjoyment of the game for certain individuals. That’s impossible to deny. But it’s that same fact that brings in so much money for them- those people are going to spend spend spend (if they can) to get those items to increase their own enjoyment.

They know those players want their next hit, and Anet is the only provider for them.

I hear what you’re saying. I even paused when I typed that sentence, expecting someone might reply as you have. There are certainly people who enjoy playing dress-up in MMOs. I do as well. I don’t obsess over it, it’s not what drives me to play games; but I certainly have fun crafting looks I enjoy for each of my characters.

I can see where someone might be upset they can’t have the look they desire because of rng, but I can’t see where they’d be completely unable to enjoy the game without that look. Even if the sole reason they play GW2 is to play dress-up, it’s not like there aren’t a plethora of other skins they can work with.

I have a very hard time believing someone will either enjoy or hate this game based solely on the possession of a few exclusive cosmetic skins. It might very well be the case, but it’s still hard to believe.

Have you ever played an MMO that didn’t either charge you a monthly subscription fee or restrict the actual, non-cosmetic content to their cash shop? I think something that’s getting lost in all of this is the rng boxes are limited to cosmetic items that in no way affect our ability to actually play the game.

Sigh
For an awful lot of people…cosmetics IS the game. I could care less about the stats. I like cosmetics in MMO’s. Many do. Why is this so hard for some people to understand?

So you’re telling me that if they stripped away all the dungeons, all the Fractals, the open-world PvE, PvP, WvW crafting, levels and level requirements, and everything else except for Lion’s Arch, dyes, and weapon and armor skins you’d still play?

Setting aside my hyperbolic response, I’m pretty sure you can still play dress-up without resorting to rng. And if one of the rng boxes has an item you simply cannot live without, then you’re just going to have to suck it up and play the rng game. I’m sorry, but that’s just the way it is. i really don´t want to support a company that is so heavily relying on random rewards in game and in the store.

Do keep in mind the rng stuff is cosmetic, you can convert in-game currency to cash shop currency, there is no subscription fee, and we’ve been given a ton of content for free.

I’m not going to speak for anyone else, but while I hate the rng boxes in the gem shop, they’re not so egregious as to make me forget all the great stuff ANet has done/is doing with this game.

Since you knew the odds are long on getting them, why would you hate someone for you playing the odds. It’s like hating casinos when you go and lose. Of course you lose. The odds are against you. The only person you should be mad at is yourself for going to the casino in the first place.

There is a rare chance to get those skins. Those who like to gamble should buy those things, but those who don’t should vote with their wallets.

That’s part of the problem; we don’t know the odds. The odds in casino games are readily available. The odds of getting a weapon skin from a GW2 rng box aren’t. “Rare” is too vague. I might consider 1 in 10 rare while you might consider 1 in 10,000 rare. If players at least knew the odds of getting item X, they would better be able to calculate the risk/reward and make a fully informed decision.

You buy gems with money or (gold that you can earn in game at no cost other than time) get your skin and put it on. You head to LA and look around, everyone is wearing the same skin you have. Suddenly it doesn’t seem so special does it?

You might buy a weapon or armor skin with the hopes it will make you a special little snowflake, but – and you may find this hard to believe – some people buy skins solely because they like the way they look. Not everyone thinks like you.

But i’m not the only player that disagrees with these business practices.. Also the whole end of this game is about “Fluff” so when the whole end game becomes a cash grab how long do you think players will pay for fluff with nothing else to look forward too..

Your post makes it sound as if the only way to get the “fluff” is through the rng gem shop boxes. That’s neither fair nor true. I loathe the rng gem shop boxes as much as anyone, I promise you that; but ANet has made more than a few “fluff” items available either in-game or through direct purchase in the gem shop. To pretend otherwise shows you’ve allowed reality to be distorted by your emotions.

I most certainly support this suggestion, though I’d like the slots to the left of the skill bar, not the right.

With all the complaining about rng, I just wanted to take a moment to thank the devs for listening to and addressing the complaints about the scarcity of Passion Flowers. The guaranteed drop from Blooming Passiflora is appreciated, and it gives me renewed hope that we may indeed one day see a Scavenger Hunt (or equally player-friendly system) for precursors.

Edit: misleading title changed to something more appropriate.

If Abyss and Celestial dyes were both equally popular and both were released in the Gem Shop, one direct purchase for and one in a RNG box with the chances of getting less desirable dyes, I wonder which would make ArenaNet more money.

But even if the dye in the rng box earned more money, is the extra money enough to justify burning good will with the player base?

I understand businesses exist to make money, that’s a dumb point to bring up. No one here is begrudging ANet’s right to make money. But good will, even though it doesn’t show up on an earnings report, can certainly impact a company’s profitability. And the rng boxes burn a LOT of good will.

The devs have gone out of their way to give us a player-friendly game. But in this regard they’re doing the exact opposite. I don’t know if it’s external forces (NCSoft, Nexon, etc) that are forcing their hand, but it’s certainly not player-friendly.

They won’t It’s not changed since launch so I wouldn’t hold my breath.

If anything, they’ve only increased the rate at which they add more items via rng.

I hate CoF armor, so the first one gets my vote.

I’ve been thinking of changing the shoulders. I hate CoF armor too, I just can’t find some shoulders that are a tad bigger than the rest.

Is anyone thinking of any shoulders that would fit the second?

I can’t think of any without liberal use of the Preview function. But even if you switched the CoF shoulders out, I think I’d still prefer the first setup.
