To be fair, rallying IS confusing to a new player.

You’re in this state with zero time to read your tooltips and figure out what all your suddenly new abilities do, and then you’re dead.

I don’t mind that. Any of the other changes I have difficulty seeing the motive for, but that is absolutely the least confusing part of this dev blog for me.

Well you’re in a starting zone… it takes at least 12 seconds for you to die from a single adversary.

The level system for me starts to look like :

So if you level up now .. absolutely nothing happens, since that will only confuse you,
and to minimize confusion you only get some traits and stats and whatever only
all 10 levels.

Next step : now you play as level 1 character until you have collected enough exp
to directly level up to 80 .. that will give you less confusion and a much better feeling
of beeing rewarded if it happens.

Yeah, I saw your comment in another post, but it’s exactly what I mean. Spot on!

With this “Fresh Start” post, it feels like everything they listed is meant for 10-year-olds.

“For example, rallying from the downed state can be overwhelming to a brand-new Guild Wars 2 player”
Really? How is that overwhelming?
Some people like shiny pop-ups proclaiming they’ve gained a level, but that kind of stuff feels empty to me.

Hey Ryan.
So, I know exactly how you feel, as others have already attested to. I was fairly depressed throughout highschool, and up until a few years ago computer games were one of my only escapes. The feeling of living vicariously through your character is amazing, especially since none of your anxieties are involved. You can be anyone you want, and no one will berate you for it.
The problem with this, is it goes nowhere. It’s comfortable, and you might even be content, but it’s not doing anything for your life. I’m not trying to kill your enthusiasm or praise for the game, though it may sound like it. You have to try and find a balance between improving your real life and dreaming in the virtual one.
Change helped for me. (found an awesome girl, got an apartment, etc.)
Sometimes the stuff you never think will happen, happens, and it completely flips your world upside down. Try and find a balance!
Good luck!

Tips/Tricks for GW1 play with GW2?

It takes a while. Quite a while. A lot of plat will speed up your HoM point acquisition, but for the rest it just takes time. There are obviously fewer people playing GW1 today, so it’s gonna be harder than pre-GW2 to get plat and HoM achieves.
Getting your char to lvl 20 won’t do it for ya. You can pick what titles you want to go for, but it took me quite a while to “Flameseeker”, even with 8 lvl 20’s w/max gear and skills. Honestly though, the skins + weps you get from your HoM aren’t that nice anyway. I’d do it just for the gameplay and story – getting HoM points is gonna take you a long time.

Guardian is a lot of fun, sort of a cross between ele and warrior, as far as support goes. Necro is different, due to the condition builds they can use (even if they don’t work that well in PVE). Mesmer takes a while to level. Engy I found to be boring.

Oh come on it’s all constructive criticism, just think next time you create a questionnaire you’ll know what not to do. Also percentages aren’t very useful, no one’s going to rate anything 82%, they’d probably round up to 85% or down to 80%. A 1 to 10 is probably a better idea.

It’s not biased. How many versions of “I love this game so much” would you like?
There’s one people can choose if it’s their all-time favorite, one if they love it but it’s not their favorite, one if they tried it and bored due to lack of content/whatnot, and one if they hate it.

@ OP: Since you asked for advice and didn’t tell us what class you play (even when asked by Splatter Pew), I’ll ask as well, since strategies and advice will vary from class to class.

I’ve been playing ele recently. My ranger is actually the class I have the least trouble with thieves on.

Ah, well then my experience with ele is limited, but I will say one of the better eles in my guild who is very difficult to spar against (he uses D/D and 0/0/20/20/30 I believe) typically tries to whittle down my health to about 60% then burst using magnetic grasp and then the Burning Speed+LF combo(since it puts all the damage in one spot)>RoF, and then Updraft+autos if I didn’t avoid the combo but somehow managed to survive, or RtL>updraft if I managed to avoid the initial burst. If it’s a D/D thief, countering a CnD attack with updraft early in the fight then burst can often end it pretty quickly.

This diamond skin D/D build video that you’ve probably seen takes down quite a number of thieves through the course of it. I would recommend adapting his burst combo into your style (if you’re D/D). How he reacts to the thief at 2:10 is probably what you want to attempt since it’s extremely important as an ele to stay aggressive against thieves and push them off of you(or kill them). The big group fight also has a part where he reacts to a thief in the middle of the fight, so that would also be something to pay attention to.

Hope this is at least a jumping off point, as I am currently leveling my ele so I can’t give you as much first person advice as one of my other 80 alts.

Thanks, I may just have to break out my daggers and try that. I’ve been running staff (which I love compared to D/D), so mobility is a little bit lacking.

Lol ok tell you what have fun being a loot bag, the tips your shooting down are how I eat thieves, but if lot bag is your choice then do be it. It’s not over simplified, your just trying to make it more complicated than it is

Your tips are as useless as your guess for the winning march madness bracket. You can’t give someone advice on something as complicated as this. Unless all thieves attack after 3 seconds, that’s one tip down the drain.
My original post was inviting advice for 1v1 fights, but I wasn’t exactly sure why I hated thieves so much, so I was just venting. If you read my above post, I did narrow down my dislike of thieves to one area. As for the 1v1 failure, as much as I hate to admit it, I just need to learn the countermeasures, or in short, l2p against thieves as an ele.

Love how he focuses on the trap and not what ppl actually suggested play style wise. JUST USE DODGE…… and common sense, two missed CnD is a thief with no initiative = easy kill

I replied to that comment because it’s a pretty worthless idea, though I think he wasn’t quite serious.
As for you…
Don’t you think it’s common knowledge that people wait 3 seconds before dodging? Do you think most thieves know that? Maybe they attack immediately after they go into stealth. Maybe 2 seconds in. Maybe they don’t attack at all, and you’ve wasted one of your two dodges for the time being. Again, I did change my mind about a few things and realized that my losing to thieves right off the bat is mostly just me not reacting correctly. As far as “JUST USE DODGE” and “no initiative = easy kill”, well, that’s oversimplifying it just a bit. Or maybe a lot. Or maybe, well never mind, you get the idea.
Bottom line is, you can’t predict anything with someone who know’s you’re predicting.

And I did read all the comments, and will try being calmer and utilizing my skills correctly next time I encounter a thief. I didn’t reply to them because I’d just be posting multiple comments with only the text “Thanks, I’ll try that.”

Lol pro tip op even when there invisible………..there still there!!! shocking right? So aoe it maybe? and to “counter cnd” you could always dodge and then it miss’s and hes visible still, ground breaking stuff. Getting old listening to people whining about stealth a year+ into this game its not rocket science.

It’s funny when people pretend like what they suggest is really that simple. Say you’re roaming solo, and you come across a thief. You see him in the distance, you keep an eye out though, and keep running. Then you see him closer, and again he disappears. 4 seconds later you get stunned, so you use a stunbreaker or a block to stop his chain. He sees your block and cloaks again. You’ve just used a skill with a 60 second CD, and he pops up a few second later and stuns/attacks again, so you dodge and throw down whatever evasive/AoE attacks you have. This just happens over and over, depends on who you’re fighting. The point is, if you are beating the theif, he’ll just cloak and teleport away, and you’ll have no idea where he is because you CANT SEE HIM. Almost any other class can be run down and finished off, but thief can’t in most cases. Yes, much of it is a L2P issue, but I think thieves rely on stealth too much. It’s the dev’s fault, really.

Umm, first of all, you can’t CnD off of someone using a block, so I’m assuming that you are talking about a D/P thief. Second thing that’s off is a thief can’t stun you that many times. Basilisk Venon has a pretty hefty CD for a 1.5 second stun.
Here’s your problem, you panic. You “throw down whatever evasive/AoE attacks you have”. This is the WORST idea I have ever quoted someone saying. You kill a thief by staying calm and using AoE and evasive attacks at the RIGHT time, not all at once. That’s what makes you an easy target.

See above reply, I thought about the reasons for my dislike of thieves a bit more and posted my main qualm.

Warriors can pretty much outrun anything, those guys can fly off like Usain Bolt when they want to disengage or just decide that they don’t want a fight.

Thieves rely too much on their class specialty? You don’t say…. This is just all amounting to far too much Qew Qew from an inexperienced player.

Roll a thief, learn how it works and you’ll soon learn and understand counters for it.

Qew Qew is good! Who taught you that one?
Anyway, if a thief pops up in a 20-man zerg, quickly tries to dispatch a a player and fails? Well then he can just stealth + tele and gtfo of there in the blink of an eye, 95% of the time. Name one other class that can do that.

Thieves are the most annoying class in the game, and I’m pretty sure most people agree on that. No one want’s to be harassed, but that’s basically the core of thief game-play, and it’s encouraged with the range of downright annoying abilities at their disposal. That’s why people hate thieves; it’s the ultimate troll class, and it kittenes people the kitten off to the point where they feel the need to rage and/or shout for stealth nerfs.
Why do you think there are so many people complaining? Are they just all horrible, inexperienced players?
I get kittened at thieves who stomp me in a crowd of 8 or more of my allies and tele away without death; 1v1 deaths to thieves are mostly not the issue.

Mesmers have the right amount of stealth.
Thieves don’t. They have way too much. An enemy thief in WVW just teled and cloaked every 3-4 seconds in a group of 6 enemies, and didn’t die. No one could hit him, cause he just kept spamming cloak and tele skills. Immobilize and/or KD? No, they just tele and cloak instantly. Can you think of any other class that can survive like that? Yeah they have no armor, but neither do eles, and they get instantly downed in a ground of 6 enemy players.
Every class is supposed to have their own role, and every class can be countered by another, but this is just a little too much. Just take away some cloaking skills; change them, reduce the cloak time or whatever, it’s just way too much right now. Now, since I’ll get raged and cursed at if I just leave it at this, suggestions on how to counter cloaking?

TLDR: read the bottom comments first before you tell me L2P.

Holy Trinity and Compromise

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

eye floater.7140

Why not let the builds be trinity? Nobody wants trinity! Nobody wants to be waiting in LFG asking for a half spec healer type compromise build any more than they want to be waiting for a full trinity healer. That is not better than the status quo and never will be better than the status quo. If nobody needs a compromise healer, like now, then nobody will ask for one and the role is redundant anyway. You can go into the dungeon as a healer if you like right now. There’s nothing to stop you if you want to play with like minded people.

If a group needs more healing, CC, condition cures, finishers, mobility, etc then they can already change utilities and weapons to do that. Trinity is dead. RIP.

Really Stooper? No one wants it? I’d like something closer to the trinity. Why do you think there’s at least one pro-trinity post a week? It’s just incredibly naive and childish to think you speak for everyone. Lot’s of people like the trinity, not just a small percentage.

Slowly.... slipping toward the holy trinity

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: eye floater.7140

eye floater.7140

Anet started the game hoping they could erase the need (and want) for the holy trinity, but I think they’re realizing that it doesn’t really work.
Considering the lack of sustained and overall effectiveness of healing/toughness/healingpower in the game, in PVE combat no one uses anything but zerk gear. Why would they? As another player mentioned in another thread, slower enemy death = more opportunity for said mob or boss to 1-shot you. When you’re playing in that scenario where any boss ability can 1—2 shot you no matter your gear, why would you run anything but zerk? Vit, toughness, and healing power are so under-powered and ineffective that no one will bother with them in PVE. I’m assuming Anet did this so no roles would develop, i.e healer or tank. Dungeons have been relatively the same since launch: Everyone runs zerg gear, skipping the mobs you don’t need to kill, dodging the massive attacks from bosses, and finishing the dungeon with no need for defense of any sort. Honestly, the only defensive ability you actually need is dodge.
Anet has started to realize that there’s not enough build diversity, so they nerfed crit damage a bit and are starting to buff survival and healing skills for almost every class(including the extra healing skill given to everyone some time ago). I just don’t see this whole lack of the trinity idea ever really working that well. The game has players, sure, but I bet there would be quite a bit more if this current system wasn’t in place. I feel like eventually, it’s gonna just come down to that.
Maybe originally they just wanted to scrap it to be new and different, and probably try and bring in more casual players with the lack of hardcore content as well.
Honestly, I think a LOT of players would be happy if the trinity got reinstated somehow, or slowly implemented. I do think though, that WVW and PVP would not benefit from that change. I think they’re fine how they are. Anyway, the trinity only really works for PVE. I doubt Anet will ever admit their shortcomings though, I don’t think I’ve seen any developer ever admit they were wrong with something major like that.

EDIT: I know lots of people would hate it if the trinity slowly gripped the game. I know lots would love it as well, but I just think Anet needs to do SOMETHING in order to fix certain gameplay aspects. Personally, I would love the trinity to happen, but would it be good for the game and the majority of the players? That, I don’t know. I hope it would be.

No..Just No. The game was released with the philosophy of freeing us from pre-defined classes. While I can see the game needs More Build diversity, and for this it needs to do what it can so that Control, and Support are viable Playstyles. Pull away from the zerker and zerg…damage above all dynamic. I do not see this as " The Holy Trinity" returning.

This game doesn’t need a Holy Trinity. To the OP plenty of games have The Holy Trinity. World of Warcraft does it quite well. All I can say is, if for an MMO to be enjoyable for you, it must have a holy trinity, you shouldn’t have bought this game, since NOT having one, was aHuge selling point, and advertised heavilly when it was released.

You bought the wrong game. Cheer up.. There are many games that still incorporate The Holy Trinity. Why not Just play one of those, Instead of try to change this into what it isn’t?

As I stated in a rebuttal to an earlier comment, I don’t dislike the game. I love a lot about it, actually, but I think that the combat needs to be fixed. That’s all. Originally I thought I wanted the trinity to reappear, but I don’t actually think that entirely now. If the game was made with the trinity in place, then kitten yes! But at this point, I don’t think it would work. All I’d like now is for Anet to start getting their kitten together and fix the major problems; stop working on the LS stuff, and actually add area, skills, and improve combat for all the classes. More interesting battles, more rewarding bosses, and so on. I bought the right game, it’s just not ready for beta yet.

Roles aren’t defined by your class. A bunker ele is the second strongest bunker class after guardian, certainly more so than a warrior, yet a warrior can be one of the strongest healers as well with their shouts. A guardian has some of the highest dps while maintaining strong support should s/he choose to do so.

All classes can perform all roles. Stop trying to bring back that antiquated system to a new and refreshing game

You call the current dungeon combat system refreshing? Honestly, I think a lot of people take some of the new mechanics the game brought along for granted; that being said, you can’t really contest the fact that it’s all DPS based. The knights in the last living story? All dps. No need for heals, just dodging. Horrible mechanics in that, and boring as hell. I find certain aspects of the game refreshing, but 90% of combat is not part of it.

Oh, and try healing allies on a necro or a thief… that second to last sentence is just false.

I would really like to know what these one hit bosses are no matter what gear you are wearing. I’m gonna call bs on that as hyperbole to bolster your poor argument.

There are lots, man. The giant skelk in AC (forgot the name), the asura boss in Arah, the first Human boss in AC. I’m sure I could list more, but I haven’t done a ton of dungeons recently. I don’t mind these mechanics, but when there’s really no way to lessen their effects, why lose the damage? You can dodge 90-some % of their attacks anyway.

Slowly.... slipping toward the holy trinity

How about no.
And how about if you want this game to have a trinity maybe consider that it isn’t the game for you?

I didn’t say I hated the game. I do like a lot of it, but coming from 4k hours of GW1, I’m pretty sure I can say I’m not alone with my dislike of major aspects of the game.
They hyped it up soooo much, and people got really excited. Many GW1 players just wanted GW1 with a new map, and the ability to jump. That’s all. It seems they targeted casuals more with GW2, and screwed a lot of their GW1 players. I like the game, but I think it had/has the potential to be SO much better. I guess that’s what this thread is supposed to be about.

Slowly.... slipping toward the holy trinity

Rangers just... suck?

I have an 80 guardian, 80 war, 80 necro, and the rest of my characters are over level 35. My ranger is 75 at the moment, but after playing him a while I started to hate a few things…
kittenTY kitten UTILITY SKILLS.
HORRIBLE-FEELING MELEE [sword/dagger] (It’s so far away from fluid it’s solid)
NO SURVIVABILITY.
Gokitten, I want to play ranger but they really screwed this class over.
I come from playing a GW1 ranger, and the way they MAKE you have a pet 24/7 is ridiculous. Play like you want to?
Nope.
Anyone have some miraculous build that can solve all my woes?

I feel like you want to play a singleplayer game. Themepark MMOs can not present the player impact in the same way a game you play alone can.
If you want to impact the world, play a sandbox MMO, like EVE.

I don’t mind not having an impact in the normal game play, but when they introduced this living story stuff they made it sound like we were going to have power, and options. That hasn’t really happened overall. And yeah, EVE is awesome, but it takes too long to play. And costs moneh.

Did you not do anything of the current LS? Scarlet wanted the tech of the Dredge, it didn’t matter to her how many deaths there were as long as she got what she wanted. The same with the aetherblade, she wanted something, distracted us and then tried to get her way (which failed, btw), then she wanted the droids from the Jubilee, which she got (and turned into a giant puppet), she wanted a poison that would be lethal (which she got, as the current LS proves) and she wanted to test the effectiveness of her big doll (a lot of people died because of that, but, Scarlet doesn’t mind a few deaths here or there…)

So far, we’ve all been a puppet in the hands of Scarlet, doing what she expects us to do while she reaps the reward. We’ll see about the final purpose of Scarlet at the end of this story arc… (I hope!)

Honestly, I never really pay attention to the story. I sort of did in GW1, but not gw2. Too much lore for me. I don’t mind repeatable events like the marionette that are large and require a lot of resources, but when Scarlet repeatedly finds all of this steel SOMEWHERE and builds it into airships or dolls or whatnot, it just seems sort of dull. Like, where did you find all of this stuff? Mined it? From where? Dredge? Well we’ve killed a million of them. It would be cool to win sometimes. I just want Anet to explain HOW all of these enemies are still there, be it some mystical respawn portal or just very fast reproduction. As it is now, we never make a dent.

Apparently scarlet has an endless supply of supplies, and of minions. It’s a game, yes, and we’ve killed the same spawning Dolyaks in the same spots in Frostforge and beyond a million times over. All content is repeatable in a static game, and it has to be that way.
That being said, this living content is different in my opinion. Number one, Anet claims anything is up for ruin and plunder; any city, any area, anyone. Now they’re sending the same monsters we’ve killed a million times over to destroy Lions Arch.
The whole thing feels a bit… pointless? Yeah we get loot and achievements from doing the living story quests and so on, but if they want to make it feel like an actual story, we need to start seeing the impact we’ve been inflicting upon said enemy forces. We’ve been doing the quests and killing scores of Krait and Dredge and whatever else comes up, but more and more enemies spawn.
Basically, Anet is saying – “Hey, we’re going to give you a bunch of temp content! We’re going to make it seem like you can make a difference, but you’re really just killing endlessly spawning Krait that will not help defend Tyria at all. The outcome is predetermined, but keep playing! You get good drops .002% of the time!”
It’s just hard to get into something when you know the outcome is predetermined, for me at least, and for this living story kitten.
The Karka still control every waypoint in Southsun, as do the risen in their land, even after we killed the dragon and the Karka lordwhatever.
Nothing feels accomplished. Nothing feels changed for the better.
Even when we beat the boss, we gain nothing but a bunch of indefinitely contested waypoints and empty maps.
Just a little sick of the lack of impact players have.
That’s all!

After my 5th run or so I started winning every time, and got a Wind Catcher on ~20th run. After that I did probably another 20, and got nothing.
