The player makes the build more than the build makes the player tho.
If conventional meta “wisdom” held up, google’s 4 signet Thief build would have been complete trash and they would have been eliminated in the first round 500-100 in both matches since it would be a 4v5 right?

The point of this post is…there is not enough variety in build making. If you can’t see that. They are boring and settled in the builds or shall I say, build. There really is not much to go with on making many different builds. As a team. That works. Just as strong. As the strongest.
Build variety is always good. However, I don’t think three months is particularly long for a certain type of build to be popular. What are we comparing it to?
Also, you should try engineers! They have at least 4 power builds being used by top 100 team or solo players and 4 condi builds that I know of, with quite a bit of variety between them. I’m sure there are others I haven’t seen.
I have to disagree. Three months is long enough. Thing is, it’s been longer than three months. But my real issue is the lack of variety. And yes engis do have variety. But, all classes should have variety. Viable variety. I better clarify that. LOL. And when I say viable, I mean in a team sense. Not a sPvP/random/soloQ sense.

First off, unless I’m mistaken there weren’t really any significant balance changes except for the Sigil of Paralyzation fix. So why would the meta change?
Second off all, the weapon sets themselves are far too limiting to give players real choices.
I agree with the weapon set issue. That is one of the things I would like to see happen. More weapons. We need more options. It is the only way to make real meta changes. Or meta counters.
- meaningful ranks like in gw1.
- progressive rewards, means rewards getting better for every consecutive win for e.g.
- in general rewards that are challenging and not a one-shot goal like armors/weapons (rewards that create incentives for a longer period of time and reward also good play, not grind)
Good luck with the meaningful ranks from gw1. They would have to make many other ranks systems instead of one.
It is not that I don’t have a fully geared PvE character. It’s that my PvP armour looks so amazing and I don’t really PvE, so what is the point. My guardian is a GOD. Do not let my NOT MAXED OUT GRINDY PVE look fool you.

The longest stretch was probably tanky dps comps of 1 guardian, 1-2 eles with either cleric or valkyrie for sustain/burst, 1 mesmer, 1-2 teamfight or roaming dps builds (thief, engineer, necro, mesmer). But that hasn’t really been used since spring.
I guess the current “meta” is guard, ranger, warrior, thief, necro/engineer? But it hasn’t been that for very long (since a bit before MLG maybe?) and I don’t think it will stay for very long.

Oh, well I’d say the condi craze lasted from about July through September. Sure, certain condition skills still seem a bit over the top (sun spirit, anyone?) but that’s about it. Most teams will run a spirit ranger, but for way more than just condi dump. Some teams run a second condition build.

I think on the NA side it’s more about how socially dysfunctional the players are than the game mechanics.
To be honest I’ve seen much more balance in this patch than the summer Necro Spirit Ranger condifest.
I would have to agree with you on the NA side. I think it’s like that in most games though.

We talked about rolling out a new process in which over a set time period we can discuss design philosophies behind the main components of Guild Wars 2.
The first part of the plan is for you all to list the top three sections of this area of the game that you would like to discuss:
For example for PvP your list might be:1: Balance Philosophy
2: Rewards and Progression
3: Game ModesAfter a couple of days we will choose the number 1 topic in each area and then create the threads within the specific areas for us all to discuss, brainstorm and share our opinions on.

This is a great idea. Glad you brought this post to the PvP section. I’m sure it would just get lost in a general forum since the PvP community is much smaller.
My ideas:
1. More skills
2. Better rewards
3. More viable traits
4. Other game modes ( i know this is being worked on and I am super excited)
There isn’t a high enough population for people to run things that aren’t FoTM. Like condi medic thief with a spirit ranger owns all but no one knows that because who would dare run a condi thief? There are elementalist, mesmer, ranger, and guardian builds that can own warriors but people don’t use them because they don’t fit in with the rest of their 4 teammates running meta.
We tried a condi thief a couple months back. It’s not that it was bad. It just was not as viable as what was best/meta. The lack of options and variety in true buildwarsing is just not there. It’s time for the Devs to start adding in more skills and such and modes. I know they are working on new game styles which is exciting. Once we have more variety, I think you will start to see new metas. Right now condi meta is used so much because it works.
Be cause Pve is not PvP…If you want to see your Pve gear…go WvW…

This just isn’t possible at the moment because if you enter WvW you will almost never find solitary people or small groups, and any 1v1/1v2/2v2 fight etc, quickly turns into a 1v10/1v50.

It should not be an option because it does not make sense. If something does not make sense. It is not right or true. Basic rules of the way things are. Having said that, I also believe that it is the last thing the PvP community should be worrying about. The game is a dying breed. Letting one wear PvE gear in a CA is just not something that is going to make the game better as a whole. Stop being selfish.
I have my opinion on why the meta stays the same. I was wondering what other people thing the reason is? Besides the normal blah blah about the devs not getting it…what do you think the real reason is?
My reason: There just are not enough options for buildwars to change the meta. With out options…how do you make another meta. There is not a counter for the meta. Not a real counter. So you run the same thing and may the best team win.
We are going to be forming a new PvP team. A team that will be playing competitive but focused more on having a solid team with a regular schedule that will be ready to have fun and win. We will need 3-5 players that are dedicated to getting better together and willing to accept the fact that they might be told they are bad and to gtfo asap. It will be good times. Gold and gems. Keep it simple. Then you can just buy the skins and other things you want. I could careless about legendary weapons. They suck anyways.
Yeah, I wish they would’ve just given up on hardcore balancing and esports long ago, we could’ve had a fun game then, and would actually be closer to esports that way.

The new maps are bad, the game is still as imbalanced as it was, the skillcap is so low its not even funny, when are you going to change something that will improve the game?
Until new modes, more skills, new weapons, more viable traits, more amulets, just more variety in general…it will continue to suck. And less trying to make the game an esports game. The game just lacks a lot. It’s not that its a bad pvp game…it’s just not a godd pvp game.

The patch had defintely improvements.
However, the huge lack of risk-reward and a non-existent skill-floor making the game for every average pvp-player a nightmare. The time spent into PvP is not necessary anymore, you can roll the meta and you’ll win.So I guess Team-PvP will be dead till Janaury, when the reward-system will be released. Sad to see such potential being wasted due to a development-strategy for casuals, while desperately trying to make this game an E-Sport.
Are you even aware of the fact that an E-Sport has to be competitive, therefore needs a high enough skill-ceiling? Because what you do now is trying to be an E-Sport while trying to get as much causals as you can get. This strategy leads to a mess, or what we call ingame: “The Meta”
They need to just forget the whole esports thing. This pvp is not an esport. End story.

Warriors aint got infinite regen, healing signet is very easy to counter > poison..I really dont get why people still think warriors are beasts and can hold a point against 2-3 people..
I play warrior, and see allot of warriors in pvp, but we still die easily against other well played classes.If they do nerf healing signet and healing surge they better give protection because if we go this way we are back on the bottem in pvp.

Overall, I’m pretty happy with the QoL stuff. I think the only 2 balance things that I wish would have been addressed is the healing signet for warriors (passive healing that outheals non-berzerker builds is no fun). I also wish conditions, in general, would be addressed. I am not a huge fan of the counters to conditions being more condition removal. I wish there were less conditions, with more impact and cool effects (weakness, cripple, etc) that had to be situationally removed. I just don’t like spamming conditions and counter that by spamming condition removal.
I also wish they would drastically lower condition damage and give it the ability to crit. This way, condition builds would have to spec into precision to make it effective, like power does now. Currently, conditions are the only damage stat required, the rest can be to survive.
Anyway, overall I’m not super bummed about the patch.
Exactly. They are not addressing the condi issues. Only making it to where you can remove or bunker them bettere? How about make new kitten skills. How hard is that. It’s the only way a new meta will ever really be introduced. Is if they make more skills to make new builds. Meow.

Why do you think I mentioned to exclude FPS? Because GW1 is not a FPS. Sue me for forgetting to mention RTS games on that list as well. GW1 was the pioneer for MOBAs in eSPorts.

Losing what argument? Even in if you exclude FPS and RTS, WoW was significantly more popular as an eSport. GW1 was never at MLG it was in other events but had a smaller niche community.
I remember watching GW1 events and DJ Wheat casting them but it was always niche compared to WoW. In the real world doing something first, doesn’t make you a pioneer to the community.

The player level from top tier teams to medium tier teams to lower team tier teams is nonexistent. That is where one of the biggest issues of people getting better is.
