That is about the only thing that interests me. Sure levelling up was fun but it got old and WvW is too zerging and too much running from spawn back to battle.
sPvP was ok but at the end of the day having so few skills makes it seem very repetitive. Not enough skill in it. Yes there is SOME skill – as a thief I do enjoy my hit and runs but I just like having more skills to play with as it gives the advantage to the smart PvPer.
I played Aion for a long time, loved the open world PvP. I got owned for so very long but the progression eventually turned so I was winning 50% and then eventually 75% of the time. That was satisfying to me.
Well last night was American thanksgiving so not the highest population.
lol and it is busy too.
its such a simple feature to build a LFG – I never understand why SWTOR and other games wait so long to implement such an important feature.
Huh is ANet is taking donations to keep developing?
Why? Almost everyone listened to trolls – ascended is not better than legendary so its not a new gear tread mill.
Imathief and I two shot warriors.
Ok just finished counting the posts on the threads 80% is negative reaction to ascended gear
Orcs Must Die 2 is more fun
It must be a hard choice for game designers. You can either design a game with content that requires groups and being part of a guild is important – alienating the solo players. Or you can make a game which can be soloed – removing the need for socialization which in the end detracts from the game.
Hard choice.
Perhaps if there were incentives to be part of a guild, part of groups then the community would be greater.
I think most people got their moneys worth – but I was disappointed that it is not going to be my long term MMORPG – I really wanted one.
3. Just to add another little sadistic kick to this; MAKE HALF MY SKILLS THAT ARE WORTH HAVING CAUSE ME TO LEAP OFF OF PLATFORMS IM FIGHTING ON!!! Dodge the mob attacking you? Over you go! Bottom of the cliff for you!
As a thief I had to laugh at this – I totally agree lol
- Gear progression is as essential to an MMORPG as copious loot drops is to an Action RPG and jumping and climbing are to Platformers and combos are to Fighting Games. It’s just a part of the genre.
No, it’s part of a design model.
Please go research MMORPGs and the history of the subgenre, before making blanket statements about it. There have been many models. I personally played an MMORPG for several years that didn’t have any gear progression or loot to speak of.
So stating that ‘gear progression is essential to the subgenre’ is demonstrably false.
If you want to have a serious dialogue, I think you ought start it that way. I’d suggest you do your homework. There’s about 20 years of background that you should be at least casually familiar with.
Right Ultima Online was the grand daddy of MMORPGs and did not have gear progression. I loved that game back in the day.
These people are referred to as “whales” since they outspend the average gamer by a significant margin. It is estimated that the average gamer will spend about $20 on a cash shop throughout the life of game. Whales can spend anywhere from $100-thousands depending on the person. These whales make up for a fairy large ~75% of gamers that will pay nothing to play (like me) and I thank you for it, and I’m sure anet does as well.
I take offense at being called a whale, isn’t that being mammalist.
Full probably changed e.g.
Full used to mean 10,000 concurrent players.
Now it is 1,000 concurrent players.
and they probably made it so it never says anything less than High to prevent panic from setting in.

2 HOURS A DAY ?
Ok fine if you are a school kid with nothing to do, or a student or unemployed.
Power creep is not fine. An excellent video explaining why
Gear creep is not fine. An excellent video explaining why
If 75% of 10,000 forum posters cry foul at item progression I would say that would be statistically significant.
1. Open world PvP complete with conquerable guild keeps.
this x 1000
Nothing.
So thats it – you are done – you don’t want anything for your character.
Doesn’t that defeat the whole purpose of a persistent character.
I don’t want to grind for anything. I want rewards for mastery and completion. World completion, doing all the exp and story paths, unlocking every skill, racking up kills and objectives in WvW (why don’t capture / defend events reward a couple badges?), doing the jump puzzles, killing the world bosses, etc. Some things should stay expensive and hard to reach like legendaries, but max stat gear with choice of runes and sigils should be near ubiquitous for anyone except new level 80s.
Rewards ? But what is your reward ?
Grind can be anything and all the things you have mentioned.
But the question is what are the rewards if it is not gear.
Maybe they should have ran a poll before assuming what people wanted. I want to expand and have goals but not for stats on PvE gear.
So I would be happy doing a long quest that covers this world and which forces participation in groups if it…
a) Gave me a mount for WvW because I hate running around that place.
b) Gave me a skill slot so I can introduce more variety into my attack routines..
c) Gave me access to PvP potions that I can use in WvW.
d) Gave me a new trait line.
e) Gave me links to the hottest GW2 girls on facebook.
what would you grind for?
I think there are better things to keep you incented to play for.
It other MMOs gold was important so you crafted and gathered. Gold is not really important here so I have no incentive to craft or gather.
Why not make gold more useful and dungeons a viable way to making gold.
Why not a long quest that requires you to join a guild, group up with guildies and complete it in order to get an extra skill slot Force some social behaviour into the game and the social experience may help the game.
In Aion it was important to be in a guild, for PvP revenge killing in an Open World to getting help completing some kitten difficult quests.
Here you can play solo so you lose the social experience an MMO could be.
I’ll just go back to aion, if i have to grind for gear might as well grind for a good looking one
Is it free to play yet? I would go back if it was.
this is a bait and switch scam.
lol you may be right
In every MMO I’ve played, some complaint comes up that the majority of players agree with regarding a present or planned feature.
Aion
what did they add?
Actually I loved Aion but the carebears left because there were getting killed by PvPers.
forum users are about 5% of gw2 community and the other 95% are probably looking forward to the new patch as i am just saying
It probably is, but apparently they did this change based on feedback gathered.
Since they haven’t asked me anything in game since BWE surveys I gather they did so based on forum posts.
Were you asked if you wanted a new item tier?
I wasn’t.I didn’t post in this forum until this development – my first post was giving Anet the benefit of doubt. (Check my posting history)
I’m looking forward for new content. I’m not looking forward for new item tiers.
I think the drop off of players who reached end game was steeper than expected.
Looking at the forum there is a lot of sentiment to needing progression.
This was probably the cheap way to do it.
I would rather do exciting quests for skill slots, mounts, gold etc
I just hate knee jerk reactions to things like this. Why are all gamers so conservative? Its like watching Fox News whenever someone does something that they can spin to be horrible/world ending/hitleresque. Its just a bunch of people overreacting and when the event happens and people like it, those same people will embrace it and pretend that they were never calling wolf in the first place. Grow up guys.
It is not about being conservative. They want to add progression but they were not very innovative about it – a gear treadmill.
How about a huge long quest which ends with an additional skill slot. That would be more fun.
If you look at the poll from another thread you are in the minority. Most people do no not want gear grinding.
I would grind for an extra skill bar slot though.
No there are better things to grind for – I would grind a long time to get an extra skill bar slot.
If you dont have the agony resistance you cant get into some guilds or pugs as someone else pointed out. Not a great idea.
Kicking might be extreme but its not very sociable to be lazy and not respawn – if you are late so what at least you made the effort. What if a miracle happened and the boss killed everyone.
I can see why you got kicked, I wouldn’t have kicked you but I guess now you know some better dungeon etiquette.
If PvP meant something i.e. you got some reward from winning that was worth keeping I would play a lot. But no tangible rewards means no reason to play.
When I was playing Aion getting into a good guild was critical because you needed organization for PvP, you needed help completing quests, you needed help getting a revenge kill in open world PvP. The size of the guilds was limited to 100 and a guild could capture world fortresses and a GUILD MEANT SOMETHING.
Here there is little incentive to be in a guild – you can pretty much pug everything and the long term rewards are all fluff so it doesnt really matter.
I played a lot of MMO’s the most recent being Aion, Rift and then SWTOR. I wasn’t a huge fan of SWTOR and Rift’s endgame became dull.
But when I played Aion it kept me going back in because of the PvP. PvP was fully open world so as a single player I could login and find a one-on-one battle. Sometimes I won sometimes I lost but each kill gave you something towards the best PvP armor.
I crafted and gathered a lot too because I needed the money for potions and food that provided an edge in PvP. Not to mention good armor and enhancements that were extremely expensive.
I joined a guild because it was critical if you wanted the best PvP experience for the large world versus world battles.
However Aion lost its fanbase because the grind was overbearing, the PvE players were getting tired of ganked while questing, the worlds were not balanced.
With Guildwars 2 we have even PvP with nothing of interest to grind for. Sorry I don’t really care about my characters look.
Sure I can play other games like everyone says however GW2 as a new game has the player base, plus great game design and I was a huge fan at the outset. Its just the end game PvP is static and there is no real incentive to win.
So its just a casual gamer game, not an intense MMO experience.
I don’t see why adding skills would be detrimental.
As long as they were unique skills and not the same flavor of an existing skill.
Seems to me it would make PvP even better.
Its interesting how some people see someone ask for a feature and they jump all over them like how dare they suggest the game is not perfect.
lol
kids today, no manners
I love how the question is asked why no PvP server and then all the carebears start crying – um so dont join a PvP server dumb kitten
I would love to see one and there are a lot of people who would as well. Doesnt mean we would all be there all the time because sometimes you just want to level with no griefing.
But other times I love the excitement of the danger. That is what made Aion so exciting – the unknown and the danger.
What makes GW2 perfect for this is the level scaling down so you cant have a high level stomp over you – sweet ! Plus the evenness of the classes.
Open World PvP would rock.
I would prefer though a world similar to WvW that you queue for though versus dedicating a server to join.
I might help if you use a subject/title for your posts that matches the content
Glabb.9163
it is called guild “WARS”
____________________
but where are the warring guilds?
Yeah I was seriously hoping for some guild versus guild action – then guilds would become a vital component of the game and bring about a whole new level of social experience.
I was thinking to address zergs you cannot damage a player that is engaged with another and cannot receive protections either from another player
What I would like to see is a world, similar to WvW that you can join that has the following with the goal towards promoting open world solo PvP with character progression and a lot of bragging rights.
0) Limited to level 80’s.
1) Structured towards Open World PvP where you only get rewarded if you kill someone solo with no help at all – no heals, no protections, no damage – has to be done solo.
2) Everyone starts with basic gear but based upon the number of solo kills you increase in Rank that gives you a new set of gear (very small improvement in stats perhaps 1% per rank). This gear cannot be used in sPvP or PvE or WvW.
3) Killing someone of a lower rank gives you small reward but killing someone of a higher rank gives you something better.
4) Incentives to be in the area other than PvP – perhaps new ways of getting gold.
5) Zerg protection (somehow).
6) Single server so that people from all servers can access it.
7) Bounty rewards to kill a certain player in the area – forcing people to split up and search to find him or her.
ok I get the replies.
But what does this mean – is this a FPS instead of a MMO?
i.e. there is no progression, we spend minimal time to get to full stats and then that is it its over?
I guess that makes sense given no subscription.
I played MMOs for the last 15 years.
The one thing, assuming the MMO was good, that kept me at it was the grind.
Nobody LIKES grind, but we do it because it gives us the edge in PvP or PvE.
GW2 has no grind e.g. PvP its all balanced like a FP shooter.
I cant really decide whether I like that fact or not. On the one hand I like how I can take a month off and join PvP and know it will be balanced.
On the other hand I like working towards something, I like the carrot because I cant resist it.
I dont know what the answer is, I think GW2 was a superbly designed game and I really do enjoy it.
But for some reason I am not ‘compelled’ to play it because there is no carrot.
Go figure. I don’t have the answers.
I think WvW is very difficult to balance. Ultimately one side has to lose and it will be the less organized and/or the side which turns out with less numbers. And it will be fairly consistent.
Not sure what you can do about that.
Well I logged back in and what a surprise same old story
I think its the same old bug and they just claim they are installing the patch
Its getting very frustrating. Logged on after a break for a while and once again the error message has changed but its the same old story.
Go to heart of the mists, PvP Browser, try to join a match, fails AFTER A MINUTE with a message.
Sigh
perhaps a light saber?
