Hello,

This incident happened on Thursday 19th Sep 2013 at approx 21:48 AEST (Australian Eastern Standard Time). We captured Greenlake Tower in WvW. Immediately upon capturing the tower (i.e. when the tower was effectively regenerated / re-rendered), my character literally fell through the floor. The screen shot attached shows the after effects of this. On the “lower level”, I was able to move around, use abilities (etc.), but confined by the extremity of the Lord’s portion of the tower (i.e. I couldn’t jump out!).

To escape this predicament, I had to re-spawn. This was unfortunate, as I wanted to join my mates in routing the defenders further.

September 2013 Recruitment
[Alph] is open for recruitment in September 2013. We’re very much actively looking for new, mature players to join us in WvW from Australian and EU time zones in Fissure of Woe — a server that is now moving up the rankings after many months in the lowest tier.

We have a new, upgraded dedicated guild Ventrilo server that we are using to coordinate our WvW efforts with. Even if you don’t like speaking, we encourage you to get on the server and listen in to what our teams are saying to better and adapt our responses to changing situations. We also encourage members to use our guild website (alpharius.enjin.com); but please note that the majority of our posts are “hidden” in our private WvW section — you will gain access to that once you are an [Alph] dedicated member.

This month, we are particularly keen to recruit for WvW the following:
power necromancers, and perplexity builds;
support, and balanced guardians;
dps / hammer / shout warriors.

That said, we are open to all classes and are only too happy to help you if we can with advice, builds, community, and team play.

To my brethren in Fissure of Woe: keep up the terrific work! The week is not over yet!

With a holiday season underway in both hemispheres, [Alph] is keen to recruit further Aussies and EU players for small team havoc squad work in WvW, which remains our principle focus. We are more than happy to train newbies up in WvW and share our guerrilla & small team tactica.

With respect, I wouldn’t call it pot luck. More like sound exploitation of opportunity by both of our servers

There’s been some good movement in the past two days, …well at least while the bulk of the EU sleeps, with both Vabbi and FoW taking Stonemist (repeatedly) from Arborstone. Although Arborstone always comes back hard with the numbers against us both, last night in Au prime time saw some epic fights. Don’t give up Vabbi and FoW!

The number of commanders and players that have gone from Fissure is worrying. We (and Vabbi) could really do with an injection of fresh players to help balance up our matches against whichever 3rd opponent we face: whether thats RoF, Arborstone, Blacktide or anyone else. Our numbers need to grow (or maybe there is a need to shut down a few servers and transfer everyone out – I feel bad, and sad, for even mentioning that though ).

BTW: I’ve been meaning to ask about server-wide FoW WvW TS3/Vent/Mumble, etc: if there’s a current one my guild should be using can you PM me in game pls? thanks! (I might have missed a memo due to being based Down Under…)

Who we are
Our principle foci are currently WvW (both hardcore and casual) and PvE play, but conversely little PvP and no appreciable GvG.

In short, we are a mature small to modest-sized Australian-British/EU guild.

But note that the word “mature” does not refer to age or a licence to treat people poorly/tell dirty jokes. On the contrary: we are only interested in players who conduct themselves well and will be a positive reinforcement to guildmates. This means we treat guildmates with respect and don’t berate or swear at them and have no tolerance for discriminatory language. This maturity policy is a core, non-negotiable part of being in our guild.

Members come from diverse backgrounds: Ph.D. educated professionals, lawyer interns, undergraduate students and a variety of others. Guild chat can, and has, featured diverse discussion on the 2nd law of thermodynamics through to swimming and beyond. Many members have families and real life responsibilities — we know what this can mean for your playing time and respect it.

We have members ranging from casual and occasional, to frequent and experienced, from folks just starting out, to higher levels.

Guild organization
We have several co-leaders, all of whom are happy to speak to you about recruitment.

Promotion through our ranks is dependant on your behaviour and not on your main character’s level, or set of exotic equipment: whether you’ve been active in guildchat helping answering questions, whether you’ve actively helped your guildmates out in PvE and WvW, and how much you’ve supported the guild over time will all be taken in to account.

We coordinate using both Ventrilo in game and our guild website: alpharius.enjin.com at other times to plan events.

When we play
Usually around UK peak times (evening of UTC+0hr; weekends) and Australian peak times (evenings of UTC+10hr; weekends).

WvW Specific Information
In WvW, we often run with (and command in) the main zerg in borderlands and EB, but our specialism is guerrilla tactics deep inside enemy territory and small group/guild synergy havoc teams plus roaming. We’re currently looking for:

• New players. We are only too happy to show new WvW players around. If you’re mainly a PvE players and would like an introduction to WvW, please contact us.
• Players from higher tiers looking for something other than zergs. We’d like to learn from you, and we’d like to share some of our knowledge about how we fight in outnumbered situations.
• Players of all classes willing to learn and adapt our guerrilla tactics and small team havoc style. This means mature players who realize that even if we get wiped-out we have served our purpose by splitting and diverting the enemy zerg.

We currently use a Ventrilo server to coordinate in WvW. We encourage new members to use it, but we acknowledge that some players prefer to simply listen and follow, rather than speak all the time. We expect mature behaviour on our WvW channel, as we do in guildchat. We also our guild website to discuss WvW builds (etc.), and develop strategies and tactics.

PvE Specific Information
We’re after:
*higher PvE levels for Dungeoneering (and other end game content: dragons, etc.), and those who are willing to help and give advice and guidance to lower level characters across the playing map, including meta events (Behemoth, Dragons, etc.).
*lower PvE levels (both newbies and alternate characters) to adventure with other guildmates, do personal story elements, map hearts, skill points, vistas, group events, living story elements in living stories, and be sociable.

Requirements
If you’re interested in joining us, please be aware we require:
1) Representation: except for your own one-person flavour guild for banking, we expect representation.
2) Mature acting (regardless of actual age): no dramas, no hate speech, no cursing guild mates (etc.). Many of us have limited play time due to (e.g.) children and don’t want to spend valuable time resolving conflict.

I almost joined FC when I first got the game (I’m Australian based), but decided on an EU server (since I already knew a few EU ppl). Perhaps one day EU servers could face NA servers…

Although we cover PvE, we are really interested in recruiting more WvW players this month. This is because of the new WvW match-up system: Fissure of Woe has a small WvW population compared to other servers at the time of writing, and we’d like to give some of the larger servers that we will find ourselves matched against a run for their money!

We often roll with the main Fissure of Woe team in our home boarderlands, but for the main part, we enjoy operating in enemy territory and the Eternal Battlegrounds, having developed some guerrilla tactics to help counteract our server’s lower WvW population versus our enemies.

We are specifically looking for:

• New players. We are only too happy to show new WvW players around. If you’re one of the many PvE players on Fissure of Woe and would like an introduction to WvW, please contact us.
• Players from higher tiers looking for something dramatically different to what they currently have. We’d like to learn from you, and we’d like to share some of our knowledge about how we fight in outnumbered situations.
• Players of all classes willing to learn and adapt our guerrilla tactics. This means mature players who realize that even if we get wiped-out we have served our purpose by splitting and diverting the enemy zerg.
  - Mesmers and Thieves (pistol / dagger builds and similar) for some specific operations and tactica (I’m sure you can guess the kind of things)…
  - Fast moving players (e.g. elementalists wielding double daggers, perma-swiftness engineers, guardian builds and similar) for “running bait”…
  - Necromancers with undead horde or condition builds…
  - Guardians with a penchant to keep those around them alive as well as those who enjoy front line operations…
  - Warriors built like tanks who enjoy nothing more than wading in to enemy ranks to cause huge amounts of damage per second, and ranged warriors (but are patient enough to hold their charge / first arrow volley until everything is in place…)
  - Elementalists with double daggers or staff builds for exactly what you might think…
  - Engineers (yes – we WANT engineers too) who like ensnarement and minefields too much (grenades with pistol/shield, and pistol/pistol), and those that are built for support (healing, condition removal and application), as well as defence of structures and players that can have near perma-swiftness…
  - Rangers for AoE and ranged support, those with “glass” builds, and players willing to hang back and call target priorities…

These arguments have gone back and forth many times.

That said, I really liked your point about “dynamicity” though, and thought I’d try to look in to this a bit more. (…and you did mention math in your thread title …. sooo….).

Using data from MOS ladder evolution, I had a look at the the change in rankings of every server for the weeks 42 to 52 last year, versus 6 to 16 this year (an arbitrary selection, which I acknowledge does not capture for instance Kaineng’s rise, but does capture Miller’s Sound rise and fall — I’d contend its broadly representative).

In the earlier period, the average (mean) number of ranking changes for a server was 9.2+/-4.2. In the more recent period, this changes to 4.8+/-3.4.

I’ll leave it at that!

From the outset, let me say that we are on Fissure of Woe (EU), not Whiteside Rigde, but I see that you said you’d be willing to transfer. Before doing so, I’d invite you to guest with us to see if we are a good fit for you. We do both PvE and WvW and have members from EU and Oceania/Australia — there’s members on at peak EU times to adventure with, and if you stay up late / get up early / play weekends, then you’ll see the Oceania half of our guild as well.

So, there’s two questions there.

(a) why choose EU: I simply already knew more people in the EU.

(b) handling lag: I get ~300ms to Frankfurt and ~220ms to Texas from speedtest. I guess if I were to ever move server I might notice a slight improvement, but I’d miss my EU guildmates. i.e. social > ping difference. If only there were an Au server or three(!)

I would like to know as well (I’m on FoW). I’ve noticed we had only ONE outpost and that was a mere camp… But we still didn’t have the “outmanned” buff. So not exactly sure if it’s even working as intended.

Fissure of Woe might not have the numbers of Arborstone and others.

But even in the face of such odds, we are resilient. We keep coming back and coming back at the opposition. Determined, we stand.

For any Fissure of Woe PvE players reading this: stand with us and give WvW a try out if you’ve never done so before! There are many roles that you can play and you’ll have almost no problem slotting in to a party in WvW (PUG, guild, or otherwise)!
Help defend the home Boarderlands – learn from the many great players around you, get involved and play positively (incl. taking part in map / team chat and complimenting people when they do good things, even if plans go awry)! Play a pivotal role in advancing our cause in the Eternal Battlegrounds.
Or take my (standing) offer of a place with our roaming squads: come with us deep in to enemy territory for some guerrilla action and mayhem with [Alph] and others to demoralise our opponents, split their forces, and relieve them of their burdens (camps, towers, keeps…). To join a guild, you need an invite (usually from a guild officer or leader). But to get an invite, it’d be useful for guild leaders to know some things.

e.g. what sort of guild are you looking for (PvE, WvW, sPvP, roleplay), which server you’re on (and if you’d want to transfer) and what timezone you play in / if you want a specific country.

I’m sure if you post these details, you’ll get a response that you want.

Otherwise, I’d suggest browsing/searching through the guild listings (https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/guilds/guilds/Guild-Wars-2-Guild-Compendium/first or http://www.gw2guilds.org/ ) to find one that you like and asking the leaders for an invite.

Although we started out as an Australian-based guild, we now have members worldwide. At least a third of our members (probably more now!) are from the UK (and EU) timezones. We are a mature guild (meaning we have families, jobs and responsibilities beyond the game): so if you’re asking for 18+ because you want mature members (rather than a licence to swear) then you’d fit in with us. Not all guild members have TS3, but several regularly use it (or similar voip’s).

I understand the frustration completely. But I’m a self-confessed Fissure of Woe loyalist and I enjoy playing on the Fissure of Woe server — there are some great players there, excellent people to talk with. I feel the same as Hamham: I’m having fun, and with my guildmates we have some epic battles!

Concerning WvW population: at Australian peak times — the matches are still unbalanced, but nowhere near as bad as at EU peak times (I’ve played both). FoW can make significant gains during Aussie peak hours and employs smart tactics. Plus, I’ve experienced zero queues. Ever. Since I started playing several months ago.

Who we are
Our guild, Alpharius [Alph], is a mature membership (with many members having families and other commitments), modestly sized, International (but Australian-based) and friendly style guild. We would welcome your membership should you decide to transfer to Fissure of Woe.

• players to help us outside of our Australian-based peak times — EU and NA players would be a huge asset;
• experienced players to join our team that already includes a commander and many experienced high level players — perhaps you’d be willing to transfer from a higher tier to Fissure of Woe that currently sits in EU Tier 9? Our play style will no doubt be quite different to higher tiers, and there’s NEVER been a queue whilst I’ve been a member of this server. We could use your help in Tier 9!

Fissure of Woe recruitment post in the Era of March 2013 Free Transfers
I am writing this post since there are no other current posts that I can find concerning the free transfers that are currently on offer with the Fissure of Woe server as a potential destination. We are a medium server in EU Tier 9, somewhat an analogue of Ferguson’s Crossing (and others) in NA. I was hesitant in writing this so…

If you’ll allow me to be blunt: Fissure of Woe is often (but no always!) outnumbered in WvW at the time of writing. Quality and numerical help would therefore be appreciated. Perhaps there are even NA players who would consider coming over (to populate the peak NA times) to help us out…?

What I’m not going to do is to make grand promises on behalf of my server. Instead, I will paraphrase and re-word Ernest Shackleton’s Antarctic expedition recruitment notice:

Are you up for the challenge?
Men and women wanted for hazardous journey. Small wages. Bitter cold. Long months of complete darkness. Constant dangers. Safe return doubtful. Honour and recognition in case of success.

Languages
One thing that I do want to briefly address here before signing off is the perceived matter of languages. I have read a number of other posts about language barriers on EU servers. To state the obvious: yes, there are languages beyond English spoken on EU servers, including Fissure of Woe. But, quite genuinely, I have never found this to be problematic in the slightest within the Fissure of Woe community.

Quite the opposite actually: I find that players on our server make themselves readily understood and are keen to communicate: ranging from linking in the chat to denote their preferred next target, pointing with their character and other actions — including asking (the many and frankly highly talented) multi-linguists to translate key phrases / ideas with celerity. Indeed, I find that English is the most frequently used language in Fissure of Woe for chat when I’m online at peak Australian times — just my (biased) perspective.

Community
The above has shaped my view of Fissure of Woe as being a good community to be in — not only for WvW, but also PvE: there’s always plenty of friendly players and guilds there that are only too happy to help others out. On WvW, there exists a great community vibe since we can get to know each other fairly quickly. And this means that we are steadfast and willing to accept the strong challenge of being in Tier 9 together and aim high.

Will you stand with us?
So I’ll finish by re-emphasising: I’ve personally found Fissure of Woe has always been very accommodating and friendly; especially to those who try to lift to the challenge. I will let my servermates add to this if they want, and name guilds they wish to. Will you stand with us?
