Best gear for WvW? (Level 40 Ele)

For WvW I kept buying the karma invader’s blue gear. It was cheap enough and I felt like I was earning more than enough karma in WvW to buy new gear every 10 levels. I didn’t feel like it was worth buying green, yellow or orange gear till I hit 80.

As a follow up:

Cleric’s gear is power, toughness, healing power
Carrion gear is power, vitality, condition damage
Rampagers gear is power, precision, condition damage
Valkyrie gear is power, vitality, critical damage

All are exotic crafted gear except the backpack.

So awesome, you changed my mind from staff only in WvW. I ran this build last night and tonight in green/yellows and it was a lot of fun. I especially like the rotations you use. Please keep them coming.

WvW - why not glass canon?

in Elementalist

A couple of other points.

I have a level 80 guardian that I also use for WvW when I want to be front line or roaming around and not die too quickly. Obviously there’s a huge difference in the two professions, so when I want a very different play style for WvW I’ll log on with my guardian.

I have full sets of Berserkers (rare), Valkyrie (rare) and Invaders (blue). Although these aren’t exotics I picked them up a while ago to try out various combinations. I seem to take the same number of deaths no matter what I’m wearing, mostly due to the fact that if I die, I’m running into packs of 3+. With the Valkyrie set I last a little longer, but it’s not the difference between living and dying.

I’ve done a ton of WvW since the first beta weekend, so I understand what’s going on, what the enemy usually does, how to maximize my staying alive chances, etc. At this point I’m comfortable with the play style I want for my elementatlist. I may switch it up in the future, but for now I’m going to go with the max damage I can get out of the profession. I just wanted to hear if anyone else thought the same thing and experienced about the same thing in WvW (i.e. you either end up in a big group or are in a small group and get steam rolled by a much bigger group) and therefore you are going to die no matter what your stats or gear is (and again, I’m not looking for the max survival play style of DD).

WvW - why not glass canon?

I play my elementalist almost exclusively in WvW and I’ve tried a number of different strategies. I’m wondering if I should just go all out glass canon.

I tried dual dagger but I just don’t like the play style. I really like hanging back and clearing off walls or defending from the tops of walls. I do a lot of supply runs, upgrades, siege building, etc.

Once in a while I’ll run with a zerg and don’t mind hanging at the back of the pack. My server isn’t doing too well due to a lot of different issues, so there’s isn’t much coordination or synergy between the different people in the zerg. I hardly see more than 3 of the same guild in a group.

Also, I’m not a PvPer, and I doubt I’m going to gain the skills to make the quick decisions on the fly, know what to hit, have the reflexes to hit it, etc. I also almost never come across a 1v1 situation. Mostly it’s 3+v1 and in those situations I just run away if I can. I doubt that I’m ever going to get to the point where I could take a 1v1, 2v1, or 3v1 situation. (I’m not saying someone else with this profession can’t, just that I can’t).

Given my play style as outlined above, shouldn’t I just go for max damage? I know I’ll go down quickly when hit more than a few times, but I can live with that. I can also live with not doing the largest burst damage of all professions. But I’m think I should just trait everything for power, precision and crit in traits, gear, weapon, etc.

I’ve found that with the range on staff I can usually keep away from most aoe that’s around me and not die too often.

But before I drop a bunch of coin on exotics I was wondering if anyone else has gone this route, specifically in WvW. If so, if you hang back, do you feel you do enough damage to justify the quick deaths?

I should clarify that it’s my playing that’s not good, not the profession.

I usually run hammer/staff too. The staff is great for getting around the map quickly, but then I get cut down pretty quickly when I run into anything more than 1v1. If I’m running with a zerg I’ll switch to hammer/greatsword and rely on others to provide speed buffs. I’ve been ignoring range lately, I hang back when when we attack a keep and try to cut down any reinforcements that are coming in. On defense I usually jump on a siege or spam my staff behind the gate for chuckles.

I’ve been following the crithammer threads since Brutality seems to do a fair amount of WvW using hammer. I’m in rare gear saving up for Knight’s exotic and wondering how much of a difference rare vs. exotic will make.

I’m also resigned to the fact that I’m just not that good at pvp in general, so anything more than 1v1 I tend to run away or sit and hope for a quick death.

I really don’t see how this is fun for anyone. I’m on DB and jumped into both TC and FA borderlands. Outmanned buff and only saw 1 other DB person. Hopped into our borderlands and TC owns everything but 1 tower. In the middle of taking anything and 20-30 TC roll in and mow us down. Tried to play for 1 hour and all I got was repair bills. We just lost our only tower and it was built up and defended by about 15 people, close to all we had on. Hopeless when there is literally nothing you can do.

I know people have given suggestions: get your guild mates to WvW, get a small group and take yaks or camps. I’ve tried all these, no luck against multiple 20+ zergs. Yesterday I heard from multiple people that they gave up spending money on upgrades and siege. They are all just waiting for Friday.

Oh, and we lost another WvW guild today to server transfer due to low participation.

Guess I’ll try again next Friday, but if it doesn’t improve, probably just go back to PvE. Funny how WvW was really fun in the pre-launch and for a week or so after.

Culling is what happens when the engine can’t render the amount of vertices in the scene. It’s a familiar thing in game programming. That’s not the issue here. Nothing else in the scene is getting culled. It doesn’t happen in PVE and sPVP. I don’t know why people are saying its a culling issue. There have to be other developers here that know it’s nonsense.

It’s definitely not a culling issue. I just watched a thief from FA stop a camp capping for 5 minutes. There were only 10 DB players at the camp. They really need to stop the cheaters.

Daish, I’m on DB and we are fighting you and Maguuma right now. SoS is streamrolling both of us and more often than not we end up fighting Maguuma as they attack us and we attack them. So, no, it’s not the case of the 2 bottom servers attacking the 1 winner on your current match up right now. Same thing happened last week for us against CD and TC.

Just ran WvWvW as usual with my MacBook Pro. In boot camp running Windows 7 I was getting about 30-50 fps. On the Mac beta I was down to < 10 in a zerg taking a keep. I’d guess I’m about 50% of the fps of boot camp in general and my Mac graphic settings are all on low (boot camp is medium). I’m running a 2011 MacBook Pro 15" 2.2GHz i7 with 16 GB RAM and an SSD. I’m running all the latest patches, etc. on both Windows and Mac. The Mac beta is pretty much unplayable for me in the most critical times, so I’ll continue with boot camp for now.
