Whiners will whine.

Its not like you are only allowed one character slot, EVER – and you chose to be an engineer. You don’t like the class, you think its poorly balanced, so don’t play it. You have 5 character slots and don’t tell me you created 5 engineers and has already leveled them all to 80.

What happened to gold -> gem conversion rate?

Maybe demand-supply effect? Isn’t it highly likely to be the result of having more and more people with a lot of gold buying gems while there are less and less people buying gems with real $$? (And there is no source for gem in-game)

Holy Trinity > Unholy Quadrinity?

The point here is that whichever class you are using, you always have a choice of what kind of strategy to use depending on how you see fit for any situation. In PvE, you have at least two sets of weapon to change from in combat, and change any equipment prior to combat.

This is no longer a discussion of duality, trinity or quadrinity or whatever. In fact, most of the content is polarized to either solo-able tasks and ones that require at least 10 or more people, in which differences in specialization (and gears for that matter) have insignificant effects, much less team dynamics. Claw of Jormag, for example, can easily kill a “tank” guardian just as quickly as the supposedly squishy ranger. Or difference in survivability is so little (2-3 hits) that its almost negligible. The only thing that matters is the number of people contributing whatever kind of damage and however much.

More importantly, I think the focus in the combat system is towards forcing the player to acquire the skill to do the right thing at the right time for the right task. Obviously, one can no longer just stand toe to toe with a boss and be a damage sponge forever and ever, even if one’s build is supposedly a tank.

I cant count how many have I been reminded that dodging at the right time is the difference between dying and an easy kill. Similarly, if you stringed your skills right for the right mob, you might just prevent it from disabling you while you are able to optimize your damage. Most of the time its a fraction of a second difference.

I like how it is more player-skill based now than just specialization and gears.

Do the price changes indicate a failing game?

“Fail” has to be decided upon a standard of success.

How would you consider if this game have succeeded or not? Is the initial objective for maintaining the game’s original game price?

“Pay to win”!?

Its not even a competitive game. Its a cooperative game for the most chunk of it.

Whats so wrong with having the options to grind?

You can grind, but its not like the game is forcing you to. Of course it is the only way to get the best gears in the game without paying more. They can introduce one more area that drop ascended gears, but all that will ever do is make people grind two areas. It is grind nonetheless.

Or you can don’t grind and don’t get the best gears in the game. Or you can buy gems. Lots of options. I don’t suppose all of this will change anytime soon. Not ever, in fact. We don’t live in a perfect socialist world.

I don’t understand how nerf drops, or whatever mechanism-change they could possibly implement, can ever equate to “forcing people to buy gems”.

Needing to purchasing the game IS forcing you to pay for the game.

Now, nobody is forcing you to buy gems. You can play the game without gems at all.

But you want to be THE best. In the least amount of time possible. And hold on now – you don’t wanna grind or buy gems for it, for the reasoning that you paid 60 bucks for the game.

But EVERYBODY paid 60 bucks for the game. So by the same logic they should allow a mechanism for everybody to be the best in the game in the least amount of time possible.

GW2 depth of combat discussion?

Is there true combat depth for this game? No.

Do we need it for a better gaming experience? No.

There are many games that I can argue don’t have true combat depths but are still immensely satisfying in gameplay – Runescape, Counterstrike, Portal 2 (not a combat based game, but technically you only have ONE skill for the whole game). Of course we can say that the latter two games are not mmorpgs, but that’s the point of GW2 – its trying to reinvent the whole mmorpg genre.

If anyone playing this game expects some kind of idealist, conventional mmorpg gaming experience, then I would echo the rest of the views that they are in the wrong game.

Now it doesn’t mean that its all good. There are many times when I felt awkward with the whole GW2 gaming experience and I cant explain why -it could possibly be something good or bad. But it doesn’t matter. It feels different than any other mmorpg I played before -and is greatly immersive in doing so. So I got my money’s worth and am deeply satisfied.

Every profession is pretty pigeon holed build wise. There a very few builds that are competitive…. sure you can roll with a different build you think is good…. but reality is there is a very distinct setup for each profession. Thats my problem…. there is no way to really deviate and create your own style of play and still be competitive you are pretty much forced to run certain builds depending on your profession.

Which is something I thought they were trying to avoid. I think the lack of skill selection for weapons plays a big part in this.

This multi-build balance ideal is never going to be achieved, not in any game or in real life, ever. It defies logic and reality. Of course, any developer can just offer their gamers the privilege of being able to choose from as much number of possible builds they can come up with, to what each gamer sees fit for his preference. But there will always be just a few builds that are stronger than the rest. ALWAYS. In ANY game, now or the future.

Of course, we can always say “why would anybody in their sensible mind go for those builds that are weaker than the few best ones?”

Its not that there is no option. Actually, the game gives you options. But the pigeon-holing is a self-imposed one. If your problem is that you cannot have fun with deviation by accepting the fact that there is a chance that you may be weaker than the established builds (i.e. you want to be different and be the strongest too), then you will never be satisfied.

I always just have enough gold for a little bit more than what I need: to level professions and for sustenance. The trick is to be contented with that, just like with life.

I longed for the day when there is an mmorpg that makes a conscious effort to eliminate the need for any kind of grinding in a game -whether this need is borne out of game mechanics or the in-game social construct and economy- and celebrated when GW2 came out.

Its good that they’re trying to kill all these grinding mechanisms. I’m sorry for the so-called “hardcore” players who get off by doing the same thing over and over again for hours on end just to show off the fruits of their labor to other players (or to do more grinding), and believe you me, there are many times when I also feel like doing so, but there many other games out there that cater for this kind of behavior. Like Diablo 3. Or real life.
