Suddenly the idea of gold sellers selling level 80 well-geared characters just popped into my mind…
^^^
Whoa, that’s spiffy!
When a Necro casts with a staff a black ethereal scythe blade appears over the staff. It also is ungodly loud as if to announce it’s presence.
I think so many of the responses are from old timers like us because we’re at work and can post lol. The under 18s are/should be in school right now. (US timezones at least.)
But it is nice to see so many of us!
People don’t often harp on about how great a game is on a forum, its very likely they like it for the same reason the devs expect them to like it for, or just a general consensus among the crowd.
Complaints however, are different. Everyone will think their complaint is slightly more unique than someone elses’ even if they are under the same ‘problem’.
Therefore, there are like 10 complaints vs 1 praise on forums.
Bingo. For every good deed done a person will tell 1 other person. For every bad deed done they tell 10. Applies in and out of game.
Arenanet is not going to divulge to you the method by which they patch their game because you have an erroneously developed sense of self entitlement.
If you don’t like that they don’t spell out what maintenance means for each individual game file in painstaking detail, you always have the option of uninstalling the game to be more comfortable with what is happening on your machine.
Have a nice day!
Harsh but true. :/ The EULA does give them the right to do so. Transparency is good even in a general sense though. (See prior post.)
I do see what you’re saying. I think it boils down to semantics. I read “No updates done, only routine maintenance,” as meaning the same as “Found and updated various bugs and issues with code.” The latter being a more transparent phrasing.
I use the POIs and vistas and skill challenges as guides for my exploration. I want skill points and the hearts are fun so why shouldn’t I explore them? And as I’m exploring the world, hunting down areas i’ve never been…shouldn’t I stumble upon DEs? I hope so, cuz they’re my favorite part. But unless I roam around with 4-5 others at all times, I have to rely on random chance for DEs to start.
This. I only run off on my own if I have completed a DE or Heart or notice that one of the areas for these overlaps a POI etc. I like to complete zones as I level, doing all of the exploration and activities. I’ll go back and get the zone’s I missed closer to 80.
Not an expert but maintenance also means cleaning up existing files or fixing minor issues that don’t really make it a patch. So I would think it’s stuff like that. When files get corrupted for example they replace them.
Ditto, or they’ve identified potential buggy code and have made adjustments. Or they’ve introduced new code that doesn’t change front end game play only back end processes.
28 and loving it! I don’t feel pressured to play to “get my monies worth” with the free to play model. I can enjoy the game at my own pace which is a couple hours a night. My wife (26) feels the same way.
Hopefully as more people like the OP leave and the populations do thin out a bit, this will mean fewer people to buy gold and hopefully the bots will move onto the next flavor of the month…
There’s been a good bit of discussion here but in reading many of the posts, it seems clear that folks inevitably compare this to other games and ask why it does (x) instead of (y) like other games.
Every time a new MMO comes out it will build upon the foundations already lain by its predecessors. That’s how evolution works.
However, every MMO that comes out will be one that introduces someone to the genre. For some players, this will be their first MMO. If you are one such person reading this, please advise us of your views.
If this were my first MMO, then I would have to say that I enjoyed. The story, classes, races would all be overwhelming and I wouldn’t even know where to start. *I wouldn’t have been spoiled by other MMO’s and wouldn’t know that there is better out there. *
That being said, I think it’s a good game for a new MMO player to start with. They can learn basics, get a feel for the atmosphere of MMO’s. If they enjoy this, then they can check out other MMO’s
Can you elaborate on the “better out there” portion?
Necromancers seemed to be a well respected if odd branch of scholarship in Tyria. I think, as someone mentioned earlier, it has a lot to do with the way the Afterlife works in Tyria. We KNOW the Mists exist, people KNOW that heroes go to the Hall and so forth. The minions are constructs of flesh and bone, useful and powerful. So long as nobody is desecrating the souls of the fallen, as Shiro did with his Afflicted or as Zhaitan does with his corruption, the people of Tyria accept it as a normal part of life. Its no different than wearing the pelt of a dead animal or crafting a weapon from it’s bones.
I play a Necro and have not played GW1. I have wondered about the role of Necromancy in Tyria. This explanation makes the most sense to me, thanks!
How do I get the program that plays the game for me while I’m at work or asleep like all these other people. That would be so much better than actually having to work for anything.
>.< I sense a bit of sarcasm here?
Welcome!
A neat feature of GW2 is that all classes have some ranged functions! The ranger is the standard archetype for this however each class has unique ranged abilities.
I play a Necromancer and play as much ranged as I do melee. Both are fun and have their own challenges and play style. My advice would be to try each class out for 5 to 10 levels to get a feel for them and then select the one that best fits your play style.
:)
When you consume an unidentified dye a named dye appears in your inventory. You can then click to consume that dye and it will then be added to that character’s dye list accessible from the Hero panel. Above the column of your gear is an eye dropper icon. Clicking this will bring up the dye window and allow you to customize gear.
Your gear doesn’t change color by ‘drinking’ the dye. All that would do is stain your teeth.
Cheers!
So let’s have the moot outside! More room for kegs! Now we just need a couple more Norn to help me set them up…
Great post! I agree with many of your points!
For the folks calling 600+ hours “hardcore”, I disagree. What are those 600 hours spent doing? One character grinding out gear etc? Ok, that’s hardcore. Playing many characters and going through the story? For someone who is injured and on bedrest, that’s normal play.
That’s roughly 13 hours a day. If you play 13 and sleep 8, you still have 3 hours for food/hygiene/chores/tv etc. Nothing scary.
Gamma and AoE ring, brilliant!
My question to the community is this scenario:
Imagine this is your first MMO. Imagine you’ve never played GW1, or WoW, or EQ etc. You have no basis for comparison, this is your first experience with this kind of game.
Ok, in that mind set? Now answer this: What do you think of the game?

I’ve noticed two common complaints on the forums lately:
*Is that it? I’m 80 and bored, where’s the new content?
*Why is there such a grind to get money/gear etc?
My thought is, where’s the middle ground? If there was no grind of any form, and everything was easy to get we’d all be 80 in full exotics and legendary weapons and be bored. If there is to much grind then elite items seem unobtainable and players burn out. A balanced game is going to fall between these two extremes.
The word ‘grind’ has negative connotations when applied to MMO games. When you hear it you think of something that is repetitious and/or boring. This feeling will trigger on different tasks depending on the player. This is a huge challenge game developers face when putting together such a large game. The rewards system has to genuinely reward players for effort but not to the extent it inflates the game economy or foreshortens time played significantly.
What I’d like to see in this thread are constructive observations of the current Risk/Reward system and how that affects playability and longevity of the title.
Personally I do not yet have a max level character. I can’t speak to the points directly only offer my point of view as a level 40. My view thus far is that the risk/reward system is viable as a leveling character. I have a different play experience each night I log in and I don’t feel restricted to one or two areas. I am enjoying leveling and look forward to obtaining level 80 and beginning the work for achievements.
My question to you all out there in Forum land is this: For you personally, where is the middle ground?
(Let’s please keep it civil and refrain from attacking each post’s view and/or ANet’s actions/inaction.)
Necro for me. Varied play style for PVE. Excellent DoT damage for ranged play style and fun combos for melee if/when your target shakes off your ranged barrage. They also have higher surviveability with my play style compared to an elementalist.
What makes taking down a target with a fire spell or sword swipe less evil than using a disease or life steal?
I agree that Necromancy in GW2 is viewed differently than in other titles of the genre. This isn’t necessarily bad. It is an interesting way to play this usually shadowy and ‘dark’ class. I would like some gear skins more akin to the theme of Necromancy though.
I played both to 10 and chose Necromancer.
The Necro is a ton of fun and can quickly stack condition damage to drain enemy HP. The Death Shroud ability gives a secondary healthbar per se in sticky situations too.
My Necro is level 40 and I am having a blast. I favor a staff for DoTs and ranged game play and Dagger/War Horn for melee. I can solo most Veterans or 2-5 lesser mobs through kiting. The Norn shapeshifts help too.
This is a very interesting idea. I like it. +1
It may even encourage folks running old dungeons as new ones come out in expansions. Most instanced areas suffer from decay when newer stuff comes out. No one needs/wants the old dungeon gear because there is better.
With the DTE, as new content comes out, new tokens will appear on the market and folks may run old content to farm up the tokens for the new content. This would allow new players who have not seen older content to get groups etc.
I see how inflation may occur, as elite guilds complete content they will have a surplus of higher level tokens and can release them as they see fit, possibly inflating/deflating the market however this is normal in any economy.
While the above mentioned may already help; I’ll toss in a few more suggestions that helped me earlier on at release.
The FOV is pretty limited and as such was making me pretty dizzy. This could be a slight cause as well. (No this is not a plug to adjust the FOV :P ) – What I ended up having to do, and it really helped was move the monitor back some. Turned off FXAA and added another desk lamp.
The combination seriously helped me.There’s a video floating around here somewhere on how the human eye sees and how FOV can make one ill feeling. Watching that, it made sense on why I was getting so dizzy. Moving the monitor back added enough distance to help. The FXAA added a strange blur to the game which only made the dizziness worse. The added light helped offset the imbalance in the room.
If nothing else, it may be something to try that may end up helping.
I did the same with similar results! I was noticing a ‘queasy’ feeling when in certain areas or when doing jump puzzles. I adjusted my screen placement and increased the ambient light and it worked wonders.
Also, playing in windowed mode offers a slight FOV increase. The narrower the window the greater the increase.
I have no idea what this post is it about. Can we just get this thread closed?
Since I’m feeling mischievous, I’ll add IB4TL.
/waits for TC PM.
EDIT Perhaps to make this a constructive thread, could the OP elaborate on what is wrong specifically and suggest changes in detail?
/me looks left and right as if looking for someone that may be overlooking the conversation…
Don’t tell anyone I told you this, ok?

/goggles o.O
Teh woot!
While I agree that the current alerts are effective I’ll humor the OP. The only other option I can think of would be something in the floating text saying LOW HEALTH or some such. Other than that, all the bases are covered, visual and audio.
Sisho’s post above hits the nail on the head. The MF comes into play each time you loot, it’s not cumulative. E.g. Your chance doesn’t get better each time you don’t loot a rare etc until you do. It just means that every time the system runs the calc for your loot, your MF gets taken into account and it increases the chance of better loot for that drop.
As for stacking it, that’s the individual player’s call. You may have to sacrifice other stats to beef up your MF. I usually opt to use MF food if I’m feeling lucky.

When I loot a Black Lion Chest I feel happy for a few seconds. Then I remember that I’ve never gotten anything cool out of one and how hard it is to find keys and I try to forget about it.
A nice solution would be better loot and finding more keys in the world, but maybe it’s too late at this point. If loot suddenly improved, people who’d opened chests last week might feel cheated. If keys suddenly started dropping, people who bought keys with gems last week might feel cheated.
If they want to solve the problem of the worthless BLC, I think they might have to add a new chest to loot and new keys to open them.
This. Or let folks know in advance there is a change coming. I think they should drop very very good loot to drive excitement. Maybe something exotic or a special legendary or some such. The chests lack the main element of gambling which is the chance at a large reward. Even if it was a 1 in a million chance to get a legendary tons of people would buy keys to have a shot at that 1 drop.
Who wants to spend RL cash for a chance of a green drop and a booster? Not I.
28yo (married and wife plays too, 26 yo same amount of hours.)
2-4 hours a night, 7 days a week. (Let’s be honest, usually 4.)
I know botting is frustrating. Make use of the reporting function and trust ArenaNet to figure out the rest! I get a small joy out of reporting botting hordes, knowing I’m helping make the game better.
I know this will make your inner crafter cringe but sell some extra mats. I gather for all professions and sell the mats I don’t/can’t use. It makes quite a pretty penny.
With there being no competition for nodes I’ve decided to craft later on and just use the cash from material sales to get skill books and for waypoints.

I completely agree that a target circle can get lost during events with lots of people, like taking down a Champion.
I did notice an option in the menu for “Ground targets cast at mouse location.” I haven’t tried it but the description sounds as if it would help in these scenarios.
I just like to eyeball it and toss my Necro’s spells down near enough to be triggered.
Edit for additional thought: Maybe have an arrow graphic above the drop circle to assist with placement? Or have it highlight the mobs/players in it’s range?
(edited by theerrantventure.9185)
I’d settle for a compromise of the lesser dyes being Account Bound but the Rare and higher dyes being character specific. This would give folks something to save for if they want the “top of the line” dyes on all their characters.
Player housing items in the cash shop would likely be incentive for me to spend a few bucks to set up a house.
I’d like non cash shop items too, preferably most of them. However, maybe custom or fancier objects or holiday items could be available for gems.
Just hit level 60 and I’ve got 6g50s. I also have 300+ armorsmith and keep buying things I probably don’t need on the broker.
I also sell all mats I don’t use for my professions on the trade broker. Helps me break even on the stuff I do buy on the broker.
I’d say the gold I have is roughly average as I play with my gf and she’s also 60 with closer to 7.5g (but does no crafting).
The bold part is where a fair bit of coin can be made. I am not quite level 60 but have 3g to my name. I was hitting the cap of 250 units of collectables in my storage while still having partial stacks in the actual bank slots. Solution? Sell the full stacks on the TP for bank and stick the partial stacks in the collectibles slots. Full stack of soft wood logs and a full stack of iron ore netted me 97 silver and a few copper.
If you craft while leveling it will lessen profits. I’ve chosen to craft after I reach 80 so that I can fluff my coin purse for repairs/waypoints and skill books.
Cheers!
Sun Tsu would observe that obtaining the high ground of a battlefield is a legitimate tactic.
Granted, if the use of siege weapons hampers the completion of jump quests, maybe their field of fire should be modified or timed in such a manner that small gaps open up that well timed maneuvers would allow folks to make the trek.
It would be nice to have an extra box on the end of the current bar for consumables, with a pop out menu for all consumables in your bags.
I have an ASUS laptop as does my wife. They are great! We each have an i7 processor and an nVidia GPU. I have 4GB system RAM and the nVidia 540m 1GB and she has 6GB RAM and the 640m 2GB. The game auto-detects mid level settings for me and higher for her. It looks and runs great!
We also use Targus chillmats (the 2 fan angled ‘lapdesk’ ones) which keep it extra cool. ASUS do a good job with thermal management when gaming.
Motion sickness is no bueno. I don’t find myself getting it with GW2 but most certainly with games like BioShock and Portal. In a 3rd person view, for me it isn’t so much the FOV but the camera angles. A clunky camera can ruin a game.
As I’ve mentioned in the main FOV thread, I would like a max camera distance setting to be able to zoom out more and remove that “hunched shoulders” feel in some areas.
JonPeters, I’m sorry to say but your response to ALL of the FoV threads is just stupid in my hoenst opinion.
Why is it SO HARD for you and the dev team of GW2 to understand that FoV threads will continue to pop until you DO SOMETHING about this?!
A FoV of ~60 on a modern PC game is stupid, no matter what you blame it on, there is a reason there are tons of threads on the official and the unofficial forums discussing this topic every single day.Sigh.
FOV in GW2 is 75, which is the same as the default in Half Life and WoW. While I understand people’s desires, (I play source engine and quake engine games at about 105 or 110), we are not just limiting it for technical reasons, there are also gameplay implications that we are taking into account that we believe are a core part of the game. Additionally we keep it at 75 to maintain the integrity of our art which is also important to us and many of our fans. If there was a single reason we might think about looking for a workaround, but because it relates to core issues for 3 of our major departments this is not an easy problem and will remain that way for the foreseeable future.
I follow these reasons and find the 75 FOV fine. Is camera distance something that is in the upcoming fix? I know for me I find when I am traveling a zone that I feel like I need to zoom out farther to take in the sites as well as to see what’s ahead.
All I’d like is to be able to zoom out about 2-3x the current setting. Can we get a Max Camera Distance setting?

Hm, this would be an interesting build. I wouldn’t mind giving it a try.
+1 Yes please. I like as minimal of UI as possible but the small option makes text very hard to read.
Jörmungandr would be a great form! Posion abilities, coil attack, swiftness. I’d like to see some concept art for this!
Very cool Idea! Though I do agree that the theme is off. How about an Orca form?
Haha, I just edited my sig and voila! The option is present to post sig by default!
