NOT the CDI: Ranger Aspects - an alternative

But if the pet AI is linked to the general creep AI, then the scope of this redesign is a huge one.

Put that kind of scope to the balance of probability happening. Also if it ever happens, what kind of timeframe you think is a reasonable expectation?

It’s such a great compromise to make this profession at least a viable one in the meantime until they finally set aside some huge productivity into the reworking of this mechanic.

Back on the topic of pets, I’ll speak from personal experience and confirm that. I don’t fear pets at all.

I imagine pets should have play and counterplay. Something like “I need to focus down the moa first, or else he’ll keep healing the ranger,” or “if I’m not careful, his bird is going to DPS me down.”

Instead, it’s pretty much just ignore the pet and kill the ranger. Bonus points if you’re a class that can take advantage of the forced pet mechanic with bouncing attacks or similar mechanics.

The only pet I really pay attention to is the wolf, since it has a fairly reliable, on-demand ability that can drastically change the outcome of a fight. But once that’s on cooldown, it’s back to ignoring the pet again.

In WoW, you can have the option to develop your pets to be the main threat or the Hunter. I think is also how the traits ought to give you the option to do that.

I don’t care whether a Ranger can be both a beastmaster or an archer, just as I don’t care that Mesmers go clones or phantasm.

If the pet AI is tied to the creeps in general, wouldn’t giving them cleave damage, extra range, immunity to AoE attacks also then be applied to all the other creeps in the game?

In PvE content, this is how I imagine someone who only has a burst capability for instance:

Take Mesmer against Tazza in Sorrow’s Embrace Path 1.

For the first AoE, the Mesmer can use the 2.5 sec evade skill to avoid it. However, since this is a burst, the Mesmer will not have it ready for the second AoE to use it again.

So for the two AoE, the Mesmer can only summon the phantasms once and are left with no phantasm if they are killed in the AoE until the 2nd AoE is over.

Meanwhile, the sustained damager will be able to out-damage the Mesmer who has to wait a long time for it to come up with burst damage.

By design, there is very little window of time for a sustained damager to be able to even come up with the same amount of damage (I think sustained damager ought to out-DPS someone with burst).

The solution to this would of course either make the skills have a much longer cooldown, or buff the sustained damage to Herculean heights.

Burst doesnt exist in its proper meaning in guild wars 2 because of how short it takes for skill cooldowns to recharges and even spec wich should be deemed as ’’burst’’ actualy end up behing an over strong version of sustained damage due to how skill chains are done (this is what high end players calls a rotation).

+1

I remember how in WoW you could definitely tell the difference between a burst damager and a sustained damager and how a sustained damager can have a significant advantage in PvE and burst more in PvP.

Obviously, the Hunter in WoW also then suffers to be one of the worst PvP classes.

In what situation would a sustained damage be more desirable than burst, actually? Does that situation happen frequently to warrant a space for a sustained damage specialist?

I can imagine this being the case for WoW where there is a place for ranged DPS and a sustained one at that (this way, in WoW, thieves or warriors will hardly ever out-DPS a Hunter and a Mage in PvE content).

But how would you want a Ranger to excel in sustained damage? In WvW? Why? Because the Champion would go down much faster? Not at all.

In PvE? Dungeon? In like 1% of the content maybe? Where having a Ranger would not add a substantial advantage in that content, I doubt a Ranger would ever feel justifiably useful.

I don’t even think that burst damagers should be able to do the same damage to a sustained damage given the same amount of time. The nature of burst is usually a huge spike that cannot be compared to damage over time.

IMO, the discussion on pets is becoming overcomplicated. Why not just redistribute the power, fix the F2 timing, and keep them as-is? The pet is not the problem if you swap it, its the pet hitting things that is a problem.

Also I am not super happy with the idea of stow buffs and even less happy with a perma stow. The pet is part of me as a Ranger, it is one of the core things of the class. So instead, why not just cut the cooldown time on pet death (perhaps tie it to beastmastery)? In every other situation besides a zerg you should be able to keep your pet alive a good majority of the time by paying attention and swapping it.

Also, if we are discussing adding stow buffs, why not just add the micromanaging to something else…like the innate pet ability we currently cannot control? Call it an F5 skill if you want, just let us use skills like wolf knockdown on demand.

If you’re happy to use the pet all the time, that option would still be available to you when the permastow option is made available.

Even if it’s not the solution to the pet AI, I believe that this is the best compromise to give to the Ranger class until the pet AI is redesigned (if ever).

Overall, I’m betting that the majority of the ranger community will be extremely happy with just this change and the non-rooting sword attack.

In fact, it seems that the non-rooting sword attack has become the elephant in the room. Could any of the devs comment on this point? I think it’s a very straightforward point. The other classes could dodge through their auto-attacks, why not this one? I definitely can’t see how the Ranger would be OP just because of this small fix.

I suppose after these two are out of the way, the next major point of discussion would be the traits.

So its been about 24 hours at at this point, 7 pages of proposals, and very little response (pratically none) to said proposals from devs. I was under the impression (perhaps incorrectly?) that devs would be active proponents in the advancement of the discussion in this forum. So far what im mostly seeing is people posting their own ideas and ignoring/bypassing the ideas of others. We honestly need some sort of moderation in here, motivation if you will, on the part of the devs, to move this thread in a direction of discussion, other wise by tommorow well be 20 pages in, floating in a sea of lost and forgotten proposals. Are the ideas good so far? are they way off base? What aspects of the proposals so far are peaking your intrest? More dev involvment please from here on out please.

This. +1

I know that im out of topic here and not using the format proposal and i apologize for it ,but before posting any ideas about the ranger and having into consideration that this will be read by some dev ,i will like to ask something :

Would you ever (or have you) considered the removal of the pet ,knowing how borked the ai is ,and as anet says ,it can not be reworked because its tied to mob ai?

Or would you consider split the class in to two, ranger/beastmaster ,and rework the pet ai from the ground.

Again sorry for the offtopic and thx for any possible answer.

Removing the pet was something that was discussed in initial design of the class, but it is such an integral part of the Ranger’s design and philosophy.

There might be some ways that we can redesign the pet and it’s AI, but those are big projects. For the time being, we are happy to take any suggestions regarding the pet.

I can see your concern here but, the option to have the pet as such an integral part of the class is one of the largest faults of the class. Could it not be optional to have the pet as an option, basically if you spec wilderness survival your pet becomes a larger part of the class, if you choose to spec in something different to be more valuable to your group then either you don’t have the pet or it has minimal impact on the class.

I agree. If it’s a pet class and the pet AI is so broken and this is integral to the design philosophy of the class, then a huge investment in pet rework is inevitable.

If that is too big of an investment in time, then buff ranger so much so that it doesn’t rely too much in the pet in the meantime. Nerf again once the new redesigned pet AI is available.

Their current vision for the Ranger class may or may not be relevant here. It is possible that they’re finally considering a different vision for the class if the community has a better idea. Thus they asked how we want to see them EVOLVE the class.

I’m not entirely sure what place the ranger class ought to have at the moment. Best single target ranged DPS class? Best single target or AOE cc class?

I just think it’s funny that the staff ele can bring DPS into the table whilst stacking in a dungeon, even though that that weapon seems to be designed for a ranged encounter.

Hunters’ longbow is designed not to work this way. I understand the reasoning behind this, kinda like Mesmers with their Greatsword, but unlike Mes, Hunter’s sword…

I hate to be negative, but I will tell you what I think when I play another class. When I see a Ranger in WvW what do I think? ………my first target. ie Victim. Of course there are exceptions but I think in general most people think that way.

I don’t think you’re being very negative at all. I’m not saying what the ranger is right now, but I wonder what people think the ranger should be. Perhaps, we shouldn’t care about the initial vision, but we consider other vacant roles in the game and let the ranger fill that gap.

What’s different about posting the balances on the ranger here than the one over at the other one? (https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/professions/balance/Ranger-Balance-PvP-WvW-PvE-PvX/first)

Devs won’t read them unless they were posted in CDI threads? How did they decide on the previous balances then (before the CDI initiatives)? What’s different with the CDI initiatives?

Hi,

I have purchased the recipe using one toon. Then, I put it in the bank for my other toon with 500 tailor to use.

I consumed the recipe, but I don’t see it anywhere.

Am I missing something?

Thanks

If you want survivability, go 30 water and 30 arcana. With staff, you can go from earth 2, fire 2, fire 3, fire 5, then go to water and cast water 2 and 3, optionally 5. You will be hard to kill and slowly killing those mobs.

But for full glass, I don’t see why you can’t just go d/d fresh air build, for instance. Or, if you need projectile protection, go with d/f instead. Optionally use arcane shield.

Does anyone use this? Is the 25% perma speed very important?

If we don’t use the complete set of the Rune of Traveler, then our other option is to use Signet of Air (meaning one less utility skill, possibly a cantrip…)

Should I take out renewing stamina for this?

I used to play Lineage 2 and I don’t understand why each armor has such a short lifespan, but every time I change the armor, it felt rewarding because of the way I look different but nice.

Whenever I hit major levels in the game whilst leveling (say, in the increments of 10), I thought maybe the new traits I can do I might consider playing a different style and use different stats (maybe condition damage instead of power).

This, however, usually also coincides with the availability of mostly crafted armors. And the crafted armors look the same.

I think this is double the displeasure from when I was playing Lineage 2 as and when my character has his equipments replaced and renewed.

Using transmutation stones at the beginning is fine, but halfway through the leveling process, I do feel as though I’m forced to use them if I want my characters to look somewhat decent because there aren’t any better looking armors to look forward to at levels x in the future and if I feel that the decent look that I have is one that is from a very low level, no matter how much I loved it at first, it does get old and aren’t worth any transmutations spent anymore.

At the end of the day, perhaps the more pressing matter is the lack of variety of cosmetics in the end-game, but for those people whose first experiences of Guild Wars 2 are within the first 1-2 weeks of leveling, this could be a little bit off-putting…
