[Guide] How To Mesmer in Dungeons

Please sticky this.

Excellent job!

The only thing I’m thinking about is if the reflection isn’t needed for damage just for damage mitigation, isn’t it better to go after power than precision?

There aren’t many fights like Lupicus to be around whereby the reflection is much needed for the damage.

Because it was never the Zerk gear that was OP.

Rangers are required to have Zerk gear and are usually kicked from the Zerk Groups.

If you notice the Zerk groups, you will notice usually only 3 classes.

Warriors & Guardians (zerk gear)
Mesmers (for the aoe invisibility)

You can blame the Zerk gear all you want, but in reality its the
Warrior/Guardian – Zerk combination that is OP

I feel like I dodged a bullet with all these posts because I started playing the game so late (last summer). The community, especially here and at guru, seems to have settled down by then on the correct points, so I was never misled by GS shatter specs or fun things like that.

Casual.

No, it’s not.

Anyway, if you’re pugging, you could switch around the dagger training with combined training if you need it (ideally for a boss fight, you take D/D not S/P).

If you have Eles who know what they’re doing, take improvisation instead of dagger training unless you’re going to use your daggers.

I can’t help but to come here and say how funny it is for a lot of players who play this game for a long time and usually still say, “Sorry. I have no friends.” :’D

But let me post something a little bit useful rather than for the sake of my own merriment.

You can also post in “Looking for a guild” and look in the “Guild recruitment” forum to look for the guilds that appeal to you the most. Many are very friendly, helpful and already form a large community.

That line of argument might work if we’re not in an internet era for a game that requires internet access. Information is cheap and not hard to come by, all it takes is a lil bit of effort for them to use some sense to use Google or official forum.

If they don’t make that kind of minimum effort, they don’t deserve anything. Go ahead and be a champion for these people.

I merely pointed out a critical flaw in his statement. Discerning as to which is the correct info to use can be problematic for some (information overload). As I’ve already stated, some don’t frequent the dungeon board on the official forum.

I do agree that those that don’t make effort at all don’t deserve anything at all.

Go right ahead and be offended, if your sensibilities can’t take such criticism.

I am not the least bit offended, actually.

He did mention that this avenue for teaching those who want to learn about the dungeons is already stickied. Trust me, people here have tried to make this as visible and accessible as possible.

If you’re not happy with the way this channel is being publicized, please share some constructive ideas about how to improve this, instead of pointing out something obvious like how x method cannot reach out to everyone.

I, for one, don’t think mailing every single person in the game as a good way to publicize this. Unless you really think those gold sellers actually hit the jackpot?

Its even on the 1st page of the dungeons forum, it was stickied there for a reason…and yes, there are PLENTY of people willing to teach on THEIR free time vs making money for themselves.

All good if they frequent / come on to the forum. What about those that don’t?. By all means spam mail them the link, if it helps.

“Zerker is not selfish because it allows you to maximise your damage which helps your party beat the boss faster. " – it is selfish, in fact every stat IS selfish to a certain degree. That is where you have failed to understand. If the stats can’t be of help, then you simply utilize the skill(s) of them players – find out what they have in their kitten nal. It’s called improvising and build a strat around that. It may take a bit longer than normal though, that is the only down side. Whether you can do this on the fly, depends on your skill alone. Correction, only a select few are willing to tutor the newbies on dungeon. They should be commended for doing so. The rest don’t have the patience or time to do so. There are plenty of threads stating why there is a dislike for ‘elitist’ dungeon runners.

No, the aim of berserker’s gear is to down the enemy faster. Dead enemy = safest thing that can happen to the entire team.

It does take more skill to sustain yourself in a fight using the berserker’s gear, especially if you haven’t equipped the energy sigil weapon or if the others don’t give you reflects at the right time, etc.

The problem isn’t the willingness to teach (not that I don’t think there’s something wrong with not wanting to teach; when is there ever the obligation to teach and educate someone unless it’s your job or like they’re your own children?) but newbies joining dungeons that require EXP runs only.

On top of that, what’s worse is that there’s now an avenue for people who are new to dungeons to seek appropriate mentors to learn about the dungeon.

Increasing rewards merely leads to inflation.

I’ve increased the scaling due earlier people asking for it and cause it makes sense to me.
Where was it stated that the weapon is condition oriented? The iwarlock deals normal damage, much higher in power builds than in condition builds and chaos storm apply’s 2/3 (or 3/4 if you count daze causing vurnability as condition) conditions which deal 0 damage. They only get affected by condition duration, which power builds also can make profit from due immobilizes etc.
The AA also applies vurnability, which is mostly only usefull for power builds. That’s 1/3rd of the AA.
The weapon is supposed to be some sort of hybrid weapon obviously, though it’s based way too much on RNG and the AA scaling is very ‘’power-demoting’‘. I agree it’s a defensive weapon, but the changed I’ve listed wouldnt even increase the total damage so much. Sure AA becomes a little bit stronger, that’s about it?

Condition damage relies on DoT, so the mobility the Staff provides help you to survive whilst waiting for the damage to tick.

iWarlock deals damage normally, but its power scales to the conditions the enemies suffer.

And obviously, chaos storm gives out boons and conditions.

If it’s a power-oriented weapon, then obviously it will have some sort of burst akin to a power weapon, like the Guardian’s GS, Warrior’s GS, etc.

The burst is in iWarlock where it should be. Staff is more utility than conditions though since the #1 skill is the only skill that you can condi pressure with. The conditions Chaos Storm provides are strictly for utility, which is why the only one that does damage is poison and even that’s a short duration.

Seeing as how a condition or a power spec can benefit from utility; why is it that the power scaling for the #1 skill needs to stay so absurdly low? I honestly don’t think it should be by much, but raising the scaling doesn’t seem like a ridiculous request.

Well, the AA from #1 is already proof that it’s oriented more towards condition as you’ve said. Look at the Napalm Cat Osicat is using.

Whereas for a power build, the fact that the Staff is mostly a utility weapon, and a defensive one at that, why should its power rating be increased?

Your argument defeats its own position by calling the Staff a utility weapon because utility fulfills its purpose without the need for any damage buff.

If anything, what you’ll be asking for is things like more teleport range on the skill #2 if there is anything wrong with the utility of this weapon.

lolwut. Utility doesn’t mean “shouldn’t do damage”. It means that it’s useful. The mobility that staff provides in combat along with access to Chaos Armor and a couple boons is useful. That shouldn’t justify staff having abysmal pressuring power unless Chaos Storm is up.

Having 2 damaging conditions on low duration does not make a weapon a condi weapon, and actually Osi’s build proves that Balthazar runes are strong more than it proves staff is.

It obviously doesn’t “not do damage”. The way the weapon is designed is so defensive that if anyone is to build specifically for the weapon to shine, they will go for some defense and condi damage because that’s how people normally fight for DoT. It revolves around kiting and durability.

Therefore, the power damage of the staff isn’t the primary feature of the weapon.

The Staff is designed in such a way that you win the battle through attrition. In a power setting, this means the Staff fulfills its purpose for as long as you can get out of harm’s way like avoiding a Mesmer doing sword #2. Once their burst chains are over, it’s time to swap to your offensive card.

Warrior’s longbow obviously isn’t famous for its powerful AA, and rightly so. Doesn’t mean it’s unviable in a power setup.

ANet talks about GS. What about staff?

in Mesmer

Posted by: xallever.1874

xallever.1874

Look, power builds use the Staff because it’s so good as a defensive weapon, one that may outvalue the damage/defense from using sword/x combos.

That’s a design choice for your build for using a weapon that is oriented more towards condition but whose utility is so excellent you decide to use it nevertheless.

This is a synergy of offense + defense.

It’s going to be as absurd as saying that any warrior using off-hand shield usable in a power build would mean that they should buff the shield to cater more towards power damage.

Please. By this line of reasoning, you would also think it’s reasonable for the warrior’s Longbow to be buffed in its power damage.

Why the heck do people even bother asking what’s better if their concern is “play what you want”?

If you stretch that “play what you want” definition so far, no game will ever satisfy you (I want mount in GW2!!).

You can run any build and complete all contents. Some builds are more efficient, some builds are not. Obviously, the most optimum and the most efficient builds are the best. The definition isn’t up to debate, but utility vs damage can alter the set-up slightly into deciding which is the best.

TL;DR

No condi unless maybe you’re soloing Lupicus on a Necro or something niche like that.

The direct damage atm is jus really poor. It’s even weaker than scepter #1 for power builds. I don’t see how a higher scaling with such low base damage is so ’’op’’. 111 is about the lowest base damage you can get on AA’s.

So you know on what you can rely on? I didn’t say you would be better off without RNG, RNG is just idiotic in games, especially in PvP aspect.

If you use Staff for power build, then it’s meant to be a defensive weapon to get out of the dire situation.

I don’t see how a defensive/condition-oriented weapon should be buffed in its power for the sake of power builds.

It’s as strange as asking the condition damage of the sword to be buffed for the sake of condi builds that want to use the sword because for some reason you like the Sword 2 more than the Scepter 2.

What profession should I choose?

In wvw guards give stability, usually are water field blasters, and able to remove conditions, provide heals through their ulti. Just to name a few.

While Eles are the ones to lay down the water fields for the Guardians to blast.

In dungeons, Eles provide some support through swirling wind, but can’t be compared with the Guardians who are expected to give on demand aegis, condi cleanse and reflects. Notice none of these is in any way a form of healing. The only thing close to that is the hammer autoattack giving protection for high level fractals.

Healing in dungeon in an organized setting is mostly unnecessary. In a pug situation, you’d be better off focusing on healing yourself than the whole group. Dmg mitigation > healing.

Use the invuln shatter strategically. If you didn’t manage to evade/block their first hit in the rotation, activate that invuln no matter how few clones/phantasms you have.

Also, if you have portal ready, put it down strategically (after invuln for easy escape for example).

As a shatter Mesmer, I tend to look for fights where you can easily turn the tide by outnumbering the opponent and look for the squishiest target at that if possible.

I’ve been experimenting with GS/Staff to kite the Hambow and use Null field. If you manage to get him to do his rotation while you’re invuln or in the Staff 5, then it wouldn’t be too difficult.

I don’t think buffing the Staff’s power fits the weapon Staff is meant to be (a defensive one).

Given iWarlock, I’m okay with the Staff’s low power damage. I think of the staff as more of a weapon to disorientate and confuse the opponent with positioning.

My biggest concern is with the Staff #4. I like Chaos’s suggestion with the Protection buff.

Currently, I’m treating it as:
Have I already done Staff 5 + 2? Yes.
Has the chaos armor expired? Yes.
Is it off CD? Yes.
Spam.

The cooldown for Staff 5 is huge, but I think it’s reasonable given how powerful this skill is.

Bersekerer is not the same as melee warrior yolo

It’s just the gearset in which you optimize your damage because higher defense is unnecessary.

If you want to be ranged in pve, then go staff but you are advised to stack in melee ranged almost entirely anyway.

If you’re not happy with this, go to pvp only. Or enjoy pve in not the most efficient way. Up to you. I don’t care. If you want to play how you want, why would it matter whether a or b is viable?

in sPvP lots of builds and professions work. Doesn’t matter much. You can go Staff Ele there as well. The Necros also fare pretty well. And the Engis. And the Mesmer. And there are many build varieties there.

But if you want to maximize your range attack enjoyment, go ahead and PUG SE p3 a lot of times and afk-range the dredge cart. Alternatively, range the wurms and the nightmare tree in a less optimal pug. GG

That’s another dungeon I’ve ran!—a staff guardian, a cleric, who now has to hide his head on the graves of Arah, a pug who used to look so smug in front of the other anti-berserkers. Let him think about his own utterly miserable dps. He liked to call me an elitist; let him think about his debt to me in carrying him past Lupicus. He used to speak so highly of his skill as a favor between forum goers; but now, let him think about his own debt.

I’ll use his tears for fish bait. You can’t drink tears, but if it feeds nothing else, it’ll feed my laughter. He’s insulted me and cost me hours of frustration. He’s laughed at my attempts to make him see the futility of clerics, made fun of my berserker’s gear, attempted to humiliate my fellow berserkers, thwarted my attempts at logic, turned ANet developers against me, riled up my enemies—and why? Because I’m a Berserker. Does not a Berserker have HP? Does not a Berserker have Power, Precision, Ferocity, 10 skills on the skill bar, dodge button, and consumables? Does not a Berserker kill the same mobs, get hurt with the same Agony, get sick with the same poison, get healed by the same utility skill, and warm up in the glow of shines and cool off in the lack of dev communication like a staff guardian, bearbow ranger or rifle wielding warrior? If you prick us with torment, do we not bleed? If you knock us down, do we not get up? If you poison us, do we not use condi cleanse? And if you insist that the game isn’t meant to be played by only beserkers, will we not try to make you see reason? If we’re like you in everything else, we’ll resemble you in that respect. If a berserker offends a cleric guardian, bearbow ranger or rifle warrior, what is their kind and gentle reaction? Revenge. If a one of those offends a berserker, what punishment will he come up with if he follows the cleric guardian, bearbow ranger or rifle warrior’s example? Of course, the same thing—revenge! I’ll treat you as badly as you taught me to—and you’ll be lucky if I don’t outdo my teachers.

Yeah…. I’ve got waaaaayyyy to much downtime in between practice tests at school.

Anyway, before you complain about the class, we the Mesmer community will like to know the following so we can help out, not just create another post with OMG, Mesmer needs a Nerf, PU so OP and so on.

*What class are you playing?
*What build are you playing?
*How long have you been playing the game, PVE, PVP, WVW ?

The definition of fun in my opinion is trying new things. Doing the same repetitive task everyday for years will get boring quickly. There need to be some small variation. Right now the only variation from doing the same dungeons everyday is the potential loot of exotics, and that drops maybe on a weekly basis only.

That said, I still find FOTM somewhat interesting. The small variation is there, and I don’t do it daily so it’s still somewhat refreshing. But currently with the rumors that the rewards are nerfed I now lack incentive to do it as well as having people in my time slot to do it with.

Before you do any dungeons… roll a dice! Keep rolling until you get the number that you want before you can enter the said dungeon! From then on, it’s the dice that has the final say!

Okay, how about you remove ping gear? I don’t know why people do that.

Players shouldn’t have to work around the system to play a game that they enjoy.

If you are unable to make a non-zerker build by yourself, because theorycrafters prefer to work on zerker builds, thats your problem again.
Non-zerker is absolutely viable, don’t be so narrow minded.

Other MMO’s are full of builds that are not even viable in certain content, never mind optimal. At least in this game, more builds are viable.

I can speak only about WoW. 2 minutes of Google work wasn’t hard there. It shouldn’t be hard here neither.

#truth

Unviable = DPS check (x mob must be killed before y time)

Where is that in this game where you will be instantly wiped for not killing fast enough?

How is WoW not a DPS race in PvE content?

You use one off-tank only if it’s necessary, otherwise people prefer to have only one tank.

In other words: minimum support + as much DPS as possible.

Such difference!!!

P/P always horrible for dungeons?

Run whatever you like.

Group appropriately.

P/P is horrible damage unless you absolutely must range a single-target.

Boss design.
When one of your team mates stand in the fire and dies, the boss lose 25% of his hp. Sacrifice 4 members and done. See? You don’t have to dps. So much fun and tactics.

That would so destroy the all heavies meta.

I don’t think anyone would like that at all.

So…?

Utility is irrelevant to the gear and why is this bad?

This way, it doesn’t matter what gears the Mesmers run in WvW their Mass Invis and Time Warp remain to be excellent utilities.

So you’re arguing that Warriors, Guardians, and Mesmers are super popular in high-end PvE because they have enough latent utility that they can abuse the stagnant DPS meta?

I agree.

Good.

Except I don’t use the word ‘abuse’.

Since this post is more about dungeons than real diversity I will comment on that part of it. The problem with dungeons is the SPEED clears and getting to the end/shines as fast as possible without doing the middle bits as intended.

Perhaps what anet should do is reward players for going out of their way and doing more of the content in between the start and end. Let’s say you kill the mobs between the start and end. If done you get MORE added to the reward chest. Those “dynamic” “randomly popping champs” same, deal.

With things like this adding more to rewards perhaps more diverse builds could be wanted/needed because they may/could be events or new ones added that may require other things that other builds/classes can provide.

That will not affect speed clears.

Speed clear records will continue to skip chests and all possible trash mobs.

Casual speed clears will clear all the good trash mobs like in CoE as fast as possible.

If you add more worthy trash mobs, the aim is still to finish the dungeon as soon as possible in a good reward vs time manner. If that includes adding another 10-20 seconds clearing worthy trash mobs, then it’ll be the same as before, except you add 10-20 more seconds.

I honestly don’t mind a dungeon like COE to be full of those trash mobs. I can’t complain for more easy money drops.

Mesmer = Not always taken for pure DPS
Thief = nice stealthy skips (also v good DPS to boot)
Guard = condi removal, stability, aegis

Yet they all run zerker.

Got it.

Almost! Got 13/30

Also, they should remove ping gear. I thought they’ve gone so far to avoid being just another WoW clone, but obviously they haven’t gone far enough.

Just for you.
