Count me among the disappointed. No quitting, no raging, just…disappointed.
I am sick to death of repetitive gear grinds in MMOs and was hoping GW2 would avoid it. I didn’t think they’d be able to entirely avoid it in the long run, but it’s very depressing to see it happening so soon after launch. Even if it is a modest increase, from my perspective, it’s still the camel getting his nose into the tent.
oh no we’re on to political references..
Why can’t you guys wait for clarification before you start whining and moaning? You make the community seem like a bunch of spoiled brats.
Quoting for emphasis, because people are panicking and don’t even know what they’re panicking over yet.
This. How did we hit 1,000 replies through pure speculation and anxiety?
not sure but you jumped right in with the rest of us!

This should pretty much close the thread. Did you really expect, in all realness, no change in gear stats, ever?
Well considering that’s what ANet promised, yes.
exactly, if you signed up for karate and a 3 months down the line they told me they switched the format to ballet, I’m sure most would be peeved.
lol terrible analogy… that doesn’t even work
your right slightly exaggerated but I feel like I’ve been sold a bill of goods and maybe down the line I would be standing there in my tu tu

I’m just gonna say it.
The whole no gear progression thing worked for GW1. It was a small game with a low level cap…very VERY pvp based.
That will not fly here. GW2 is already losing numbers; and will continue to. There is nothing to do at level 80! Playing dress up only goes so far.
A gear treadmill would be where you are constantly powering up your gear (look at traditional MMOs). If Anet employs this every 3-6 months…How in the heck is that a treadmill (upgrading your armor every 3-6 months…or what ever is NOT a treadmill..geez)? For an actual gamer, that’s still slow as kitten. All the while, you’re still stuck at level 80.
This game will continue to lose more players if there’s isn’t anything to do on the PVE side of things. Right now, the end game is playing dress up…and I’m already done with that.
New skins? What if I don’t like them? Stuck waiting for the next batch.
For an actual gamer like me. I play lots of other games. Devoting months of play time to keep up with a gear curb is a nightmare for me. It becomes a job. During gw1 there were years of time I didn’t spend playing, but I could always pick the game back up and be with the best of the best. I didn’t have to grind badge gear so I can be told I needed t10 to do a t9 raid.
This is what I don’t get.
You run your dungeons, you get the gear. You would have anyway to gasp get the new skins! Which you guys where OK with anyway.
So we are OK with a meaningless skin grinds. But if they add stats to it, which are all static btw, once and awhile…shame on them!
People are comparing this to raids and whatnot. Most likely, this will take a little long that your usual exotic, with dungeon runs. You’re done in a week. Yay! Even the most hardcore of hardcore’s weren’t even fully geared in traditional MMO’s after few months in.
The difference? One is super casual. The other is a time investment/treadmill…feels like you’re going nowhere. Hence the reason the word was used. How treadmill is even used in GW2 is beyond me.
I kinda have a feeling this gear will be stupid easy to get…and everyone here will look like dummies for making a big deal over nothing. 6 months from now? Another upgrade? Good! I’m sick of feeling like I’m going nowhere in these games (meaning having nothing to do but twiddle my thumbs/chat to my guild). Grind for a week…get that set. /cheer
I remember reading threads that if they were to have gear progression, make it easy at least. Gear is stupid easy to get in this game. This new kitten? Probably the same.
Dyn, MrLee, You’re only seeing one side of it, it’s not so much as the grind as having to grind. The player who grinds for skins does it because they want to and not because they need to. Gear progression in most mmo’s is required to complete continuing harder content, hence the vicious cycle. Most players were under the impression the greedy gear grind was not the GW2 model so it’s obvious why most are upset to see this change. I mean no different then the hardcore wowtards being peeved if gear reached it’s finite cap in wow.
See I really don’t see it like that. I see it as something new to do.
I mean we are all here to play a game right? If they do introduce a more powerful gear then I am sure they will make more than one way to get it. Dungeons or Crafting, who knows!I see it as adding content for people who WANT the gear chase. People don’t like that, fine. Then they don’t have to do it! Just like if they don’t want to do something now, they have that choice. Because if they do introduce stronger gear in the game, IMO it isn’t going to be that much of a boost, if at all.
But we won’t know until ArenaNet puts up their blog post or whenever they feel like doing it.
You can’t have one without affecting the other. The player that chooses not to will be left behind. Most were under the impression that future content would be added without constant gear progression. So while you enjoy your type of gameplay it’s at the expense of others and the latter effects no one, see my point?
Ever since I read this in the morning, I havent logged in. I just found it difficult to log in knowing that any gear I obtain on my main might be replaced in a few days.
Going to log in now, on my alts I’d imagine, but I haven’t had the urge to log in and obtain some dungeon gear today just because of this.
You play an MMO. MMO’s are about progression and additions. Stuff will change. If you haven’t figured this out by now, then I don’t think MMO’s are the type of game for you.
Not this MMO. Not verticle progression. If I wanted a gear treadmill I’ll do it via raiding. Not by simple fact of purchasing gear.
With that logic, why have gear at all?
This game is too big to not have something to do at level 80. Reward your level 80’s eventually. Playing barbie will only go so far.
Reward with what? Bigger numbers? Or making the game slightly easier to play?
Proponents of stat progression sure love throwing out the word “rewards” without explaining their meaning. If the reward is the ability to access certain content because you have gear that’s better than what others have, that means precisely the kind of elitism and gear grind that would put a lot of players off GW2, because that’s not the game they bought.
What elitism, though?
The gear in this game is way to easy to get to brag about. The new stuff? I will bet it’s the same thing!
All this is is to give us level 80’s something to do other than playing dress up. You people who like to play dress up? You’ll benefit, as you will run the dungeon anyway to get the skins/set you want.
If this required mass amounts of time to get the gear/level 80…I would get your argument. But…it doesn’t hold water in this game at all. Maybe for a legendary, but they don’t have stat boosts. Sooo, you can die looking pretty in WvW is about what that amounts to.
Grinding for skins/sets = not a grind is what I’m getting in this thread. 100’s of dungeon runs.
Doing just enough to get your upgrades is a grind, even though you are doing to get the skins/set…is a grind.
This doesn’t make sense to me at all.
The elitism of your ascend gear is not good enough you have rank 3 you need rank 4 to join our pug.
Anet is going to segregate the comunity in the haves and have nots with this move. The same problem existed in GW1 if you didn’t have high enough PvP rank you would have difficulty getting into groups.
Any content that isn’t accessible to all due to not having proper gear is bad.
People are going to be elitist pricks regardless. Mad King dungeon full of teams saying they would only take real level 80’s.
I’ve come to realize this also and was hoping that they after a few months of playing GW2 would be frustrated with not being able to inspect, grief or have any control over other players, that those types would flock back to mmo’s they played before. It’s still amazes me how those types can’t fathom that people can just game for the fun of it.
I’m just gonna say it.

Man and I was looking forward to this update too , how disappointing. The main reason I purchased and invested time in this title is because it wasn’t a greedy gear grind raid fest. I can totally understand everyone’s haste to. If we’ve learned anything from mmo history is that this is usually how it starts.
I dont get it. You pick traits that are used when you are stealthed. But you dont say to use any skills that stealth you except the bubble (which for damage is replaced by the caltrops or signets) I dont get you man lol.
didn’t mention anything about traits, was sticking with Ohoni’s posted traits @L40 for the poison, might, fury and swiftness stacking boons . If you were referring to slot skills I myself run signet of malice and rarely need heals. When I mentioned slotting Hide in Shadows and having Shadow refuge was for increasing survivability. Basically noticed that Ohoni’s build worked well with shortbow or P/P. Also and being able to switch back to D/D at anytime with little changes.
Btw, the wiki didn’t have any damage listed for the Mug trait, so I tested it in the Mists area, and it seemed to do around 1300 damage to Heavy Golems, 2000 to Light, which was slightly higher than doing a backstab from the front side, or doing the final hit of the auto-attack combo.
Oh, and btw, about progression, I listed my level 80 build, but of course I didn’t start there. From 1-40, I built myself to be 10 Trickery, 10 Acro, and 10 Deadly, in that order. Then when I hit 40 I dumped 20 into Acro and 10 into Trickery, then put the next 10 into Trickery, then the next 10 into Deadly. The Deadly abilities are cool, but I found the mobility and Initiative from the other trees to be more vital. Then once I hit 60 I dumped 25 into Acro, 20 into Trickery, 5 into Deadly, and then from 60-80 I dumped the rest of my points into Deadly.
People may disagree, but I just didn’t find Trickery’s “+1% damage per ini” to be useful since I typically have minimal ini levels during combat, and none of the Grandmaster slotted skills seemed incredible to me, while the Acro and Deadly Grandmaster passives mean that if I dodge into combat and use DB on an enemy, every subsequent hit does 20% more damage (hopefully, not 100% sure that’s been tested to stack).
Oh, and one other passing mention, Ambush. This was my goto skill for quite a while, because it’s just so very cool. I switched to Spider Venom because I think the added Condition damage is worth it on my build, but Ambush is highly useful. It drops a “line” field that if any enemy touches it, a buddy thief will spawn next to you. This guy is great, he does decent damage, distracts enemies to split agro, the trick is to drop it directly on top of an enemy, rather than to try and “lure” them onto it.
Ohoni’s build also works great for shortbow. Just switch around your utilities. Hide in Shadows for melee mobs or Sig of Malice for range, Needle trap, Caltrops, Thieves Guild elite.
Steal when not locked on, few rolls for might, Needle trap, Choking Gas (you can miss and hit in front for trick shot poison combo, you can hear the sound animation for it.) Cluster Bomb bleed, rolling sideways for might or use Disabling shot for kiting. You can use Caltrops for a filler and additional bleed or save for next mob while C-Gas is on cd but I find it’s always up. I run with D/P or P/P secondary which you can finish off with this instead switching just before you use disabling shot as stated above. I found thieves to be way to squishy but to much fun to pass on. If you run Hide in Shadows for heals and switch Sig of Shadows for Shadow of Refuge, popping Thieves guild when needed you have alot of survivability and a crapload of kiting.
Ohoni, thanks for sharing your wisdom.

S/D: Fire 4, fire 2, fire 3, arcane blast, earth 4, earth 5 = 15 stacks of might for your entire party.
I tried using this before, but the timing is just too short, 8/10, so I don’t find it reliable. It’s very good when it works though, even when soloing..
Based on another thread here, I’ve been using a variant of this for a few days.
- Scepter/Dagger
- Slot Trait: Elemental Attunement for boons while switching attunements
- Slot Utility: Arcane Blast
- Other Traits and Utilities: YMMV
- Some folks slot Spell Singer and some Cantrips for +Might. Situational here.
- I prefer to slot pets in case things go unpredictable
Sequence:
Be in Air
- Air 4- RTL
- Air 2- Dmg (while in Air4)
- Air 5- Updraft (knockdown)
Switch to Fire (get +Might)
- Fire4- RoF
- Fire3- Phoenix- Blast finisher for +Might
- Arcane Blast while Phoenix flies- Crit Dmg plus projectile finisher for Burning
- Fire2- Dragon’s Tooth- Blast Finisher for +Might
- Fire5- Fire Grasp- for whatever’s left, in a cone, or just go right into:
Switch to Earth (get +Protection)- Earth4- Knock em down
- Earth5- AOE
One thing I’m still trying to figure out is how to get Earth5 to fire with Fire4 still active. I can’t get the timing down. But even without the Blast Finisher component of Earth5, it’s still cast when I’ve got 12-15 Might (it’s hard for me to see the number during combat ).
This is also highly situational, ideally against a clump of melee mobs, or melee mobs who’ll run to protect the ranged units (so you target the ranged units for Air4). One rotation of this effectively puts everything in cooldown though, which is why I like having the pets.
I like running D/D but this S/D combo works so well is much more simple and smooth to use, thanks for sharing.
or a equipment repair npc pet.

I have not been able to receive any items purchased in the market since 8/27. Items purchased do show in history and gems where taken. My in game incoming mail has been down since that time also. I receive rewards from events but haven’t been able to receive items or materials other players have sent. I can send out. Just got the generic FAQ response from support since that date. I’ve been patiently waiting for this issue to be resolved or at least some sort of follow up on it’s status. Please check and advise.
8/27 charged for and never received: 2 dye packs and a 5 pack exp booster
Resolved, thanks GW2 support!
