Why is thief single target damage lower than almost all aoe abilities?
Why is thief supposed to be the best single target dps the worst?

Like for real.. Not just pvp and wvw like pve kitten thief are not viable in raids and deal less dps than rev, engi, ele while having nothing else to offer.. “OOO STEALTH” kitten off engi has sneak gyro – kittening movable shadow refuge lasting like 30 seconds…
Yeah it is another moan thread but idgaf like i was in a pvp match kitten dragonhunter placing some traps on a node, im like right not going to fool for this kitten use my shadowstep utility in trigger them all jump back to avoid damage, then i initiate with sword 2 bam instant dead.. The dragon hunter even said sorry it was literally 100 – 0 in less than 0.5 second
So I would just like opinions on this that is all.
We know thieves/daredevil in pvp are very weak in most 1v1 situations so our only viable role that benefits the team is to decap and +1 fights with caution. I think all would agree we are the weakest profession in pvp having weaker single target damage than most other professions aoe abilities.
Also in wvw we are pretty behind to the point where a thief must play perfectly to beat another class (played at average skill level) and one mistake can cost us the fight for example failing to dodge a ‘coalesence of ruin’ being hit for 7k-10k, or in some situations being killed before a fight erupts by a ranger sic’em rapid fire combo.
Anyway this leaves one aspect of the game left for us where we can be of use and this is what i want to talk about.
With raids coming will thief be that class..

What do we bring now:
- Ok we have stealth, maybe for raids we will be brought along for this? Probably not since a scrapper has better group stealth abilities for groups than thieves do now.
- Ok what about boon stealing we are alright at that right? hmmm well chronomancer on the other hand..
- Ok ok well single target DPS we got to be there for that right? right? ermm well sinister engi has higher single target DPS or revenant that has close to or higher DPS than thief but can also provide passive group boons and has better survival.
- Ahh kitten what is left?!?! WAIT we can rez people!! pfft kitten that people will die a lot less if we dont take a thief also revenant can just pop shiro impossible odds and rez faster :P go home thief you have no place..

Ok so say i was overloaded with conditions i have a 24 second recharge on signet of endurance that clears all and replenishes all endurance.
Ok say that wasn’t enough the enemy saved some condi burst applied more even if i went in for damage by dodging and using sword 3 i will be stripping a couple of condis while dealing damage – this is without using my heal.
Say the fight is going utter kittens i can always shadow step and cure 3 condis and use dodges for swiftness and get the out of there.
In my honest opinion conditions will not be an issue to this build with the D/P meta build at the moment we deal with conditions through stealth which removes 1 every 4 seconds ( we don’t deal damage – this also prolongs the fight ) then we burst in and out the same principle applied with sword 2 (or steal or signet or shadow step ) in burst with sword 3 couple of auto come out cleanse, rinse and repeat – after every successful dodge we get a 10% damage bonus on top of having 70% crit chance and abou 235% crit damage and 3k power, a solid health pool and good plentiful conditions cleanse and a means of mobility.
I’m speaking from the perspective of a Reaper and I’m telling you, my Reaper build will give your Thief build so much problem. Unlike stealth, where it’s harder to stack conditions, your build is a static target.
That is all.
Yes vs necromancer this build will struggle, but in all honesty the amount of reveal from other classes means using SA trait line and focusing defense around stealth may be futile, if necromancer and maybe D/P thief are the counters to this i prefer that to playing a stealth orientated build and getting revealed by revenants, engineers, rangers.. Everything has a counter against it, just a matter of which has the least lol.

Pro’s:
- Permanent swiftness upkeep from runes, dodge roll and steal
- Condition removal through evades (dodges, sword/dagger 3, SB, Withdraw)
- Very good mobility can get around/outrun anything
- 3065 power max blood lust stacks with 231.1% critical damage (excluding +250 ferocity from no quarter trait). Alternatively could take invigorating precision for better sustain.
- Good fury upkeep so large amount of time you will have 70% critical chance
- Decent health pool of almost 16k
- Elite is optional basilisk for strong opener, dagger storm vs heavy range pressure
classes or even Impact strike whichever works
- Signets will increase power by granting might (trait can be switched out)
- Shadow step and infiltrator signet will allow for dagger 5 or s/d 3 combo as well as steal obviously
- Lots of evades
Cons:
- Very little stealth ability (though with all the reveal going to be available during HoT this may not be such an issue)
- Less sustain through regeneration than meta D/P
- Countered by D/P thief (lol)
Apart from that i can’t think of many more cons, let me know what you think i’m sure others have come up with this build, but i haven’t seen any posts ^^

I bought HoT with no add on packages like the glider skin just the plain simple HoT – now i’m wondering if it is possible to put the addon package with the 4000 gems and rest of the kittenz without buying HoT base again?
I just find it sad that Dev’s keep us in the dark on what is going on, regardless i will stay hopeful see if one does reply.

- PvP and WvW currently are being screwed by silly op builds – Celestial ele, Burn guardian, Ghost thief (is just dumb), PU condi mesmer…
– PvE as well with elementalist and icebow meta
I don’t need to explain the situation everyone knows what I’m on about and how ridiculous this is, so can we have some reassurance a balance patch is going to be being rolled out soon?
Or at least a reason as to why one may not be coming (if it messes with HoT elite specs) ect. I and I am sure others don’t want to be left in the dark.
There are things i just don’t get if i’m honest (relatively newish player)…
- Our backstab hits less on a crit than most warrior skills (e.g. eviscerate or greatsword 5 think it is called rush). Hitting in pvp between 4k – 5.6k with no might.
- To access stealth without using a utility we have to combo blind powder with heartseeker using all our initiative for 8sec of stealth if can get off all 4 but usually only get 3 to avoid breaking stealth by hitting someone and sometimes only 2 if someone stands in the powder. So we burst all this initiative just to get in stealth leaving us no ability to follow up with other skills unless we stay exposed which sucks since we get bursted by pretty much every other class.
- Our shadow shot is good gap closer but it is more efficient to gap close with heartseeker, damage isn’t bad and blind is nice but initiative feels too high.
- Pistol 4 feels crap being it a skill with no damage at all and only giving a 1/4sec daze while costing 4 initiative.
I just think it sucks kitten that we have to use all our initiative to gain access to stealth for usually 6s (in combat) when a mesmer can just press one button with focus 4… And yes it sucks that the trickery line gives initiative and makes it vital to be in every build, so that we can only play around with 2 other lines.
I understand Anet are pushing us towards evades rather than stealth but seriously in the current state acrobatics is so unreliable and daredevil seems like it will be essential for most builds along with trickery and the final line we will be able to swap around but chances are that it will likely be like deadly arts…
I find d/p to be the most effective for thief but it is certainly not on par with other class meta builds, and sadly i doubt we will get a buff until after HoT since buffing thief now may screw up daredevil.
Anyway maybe i’m wrong but let me know if you agree and I understand this is the typical thief rant but kitten it want to get it out of the system lol.
Build I created doesn’t use venoms but has been working extremely well for beta
Pistol/pistol with bursting and earth sigils
short bow with energy and bursting (corruption for wvw)
for wvw dire stats with some rabid only for 20% crit chance with signet
for pvp go carrion
runes are krait
daredevil – 3 (in pvp) 2 (in wvw)/2or3 situational/3
deadly arts – 3/1/1or2 (optional)
trickery – 1/1/3
Utilities: shadowstep – impairing daggers -signet of agilit -basilisk venom
So quick over view, i’ve been testing this all day today and yesterday and proves to be a very fun build with good damage and moderate sustain.
The double pistols allows for smoke field – dodge stealth to proc pistol stealth 1 combined with basilisk venom and steal with a dodge roll on top of the enemy leads to some nice condi burst followed with impairing daggers.
With 20k hp and 1.9k condi in wvw the burst is good lots of dodges with signet of agility active, great condi clear and tanky with dire stats.

Anyone can link me the build or describe what this is – I saw a thief immobilize another player before inflicting 20 stacks of bleed with some poison which melted the person. So im just curious as to what this is looks fun

Noob question but just wondering if this item is still available and if so how to get it?
- So new/returning/discounted items will be added everyday? For how long 10 days or 21 days?
- How long will they stay for sale for if they are limited time? I don’t want to buy something and 5 days have no gems for something else really cool…
- What time will new items come to the black lion shop is there a certain time everyday?
- Finally why are Arena net being quiet about this, as in why have they not given us a list or an announcement at the start if the day as to what is coming and when, just something rather the item just randomly popping up out if the blue at a random time.
Would be greatly appreciated if a developer could take some time to answer some of these questions or if another player knows could tell me and other like me who are unsure. Thank you.

What do you base that assumption on? If you look at Living Story S1 that’s pretty much ANet was experimenting with, but that they’ve moved away from that model in S2 suggests it didn’t work out.
That isn’t to say that repeatable time-limited events, such as the seasonal events, don’t serve a role in getting people to play during holidays when they’re more likely to spend money, but I don’t believe one-off time-limited content has demonstrated itself to be a “very good” long term model.
What I’m trying to say is:
1) Armors need either remodeling or new ones (skins) need to be put in the game some easy to get some more challenging (e.g. say getting 10,000 wvw kills + 10ap and a shoulder skin or something along those lines).
2)Yes I do think there should be in game events that if players participate you can get a certain item that may or may not come back, because players that having been playing since release look pretty similar to recent level 80’s. Like maybe a 2 week event so a lot of people have chance to get it whatever I don’t care I just want to see new armor designs come into the game with a way to get them and i feel a broad range of ways in doing this would be good (limited time items/challenging rewards/achievement rewards).
3)Alternatively they could use a similar concept to the black lion weapons and do individual armor skins.
Overall I am saying there needs to be more variation in the game i.e. no more trench coats for thieves and less dressing gowns for light armor – create more exciting gear with a way to get it.
Please can a developer comment on the state of thief or even just look on the forum.
The thief community are trying so hard coming up with ways to balance the class taking so much of their time to write out and think about changes to balance the class, all in aim to help the developers and all we would like back is a response, something to tell us that all is hope is not lost.

I mean come on Anet look at these armors, in particular light and medium. This is a fantasy game yet why does some of the gear look like i can get it in a charity store?
There is little variation in level 80 armors and even then there is nothing that makes my jaw drop. Don’t get me wrong i love the whole wardrobe thing and personalizing a character but there isn’t enough good looking gear to create an overall good looking outfit with. The dyes are great however there just needs to be more armors/skins in the game that really stand out, like huge shoulder pads with massive green flames i don’t something that looks fantasy not real.
I hope a Dev sees this.
So to explain, I do not know if you guys/girls will agree, but in my opinion I feel as though there is a huge lack of cool bad kitten looking items for level 80. In particular armors like yeah some look alright but nothing really grabs you and makes you stand out and the only ones that do are limited time gem store items like black feather wings or grenth hood.
What I’m asking to Anet and to others if they agree, whether Heart of Thorns will offer maybe special events to get limited items every 2-4 weeks (e.g. a weekend event that by doing this you can get this) that is challenging. Limited edition items are very good for an mmorpg and i think that should continue, however the current armor sets are just so bland – for example a medium armor shoulder the only cool bad kitten ones are like rubicon even then that is questionable :/
I just feel this game would benefit with like weekend events something consistent like once a month things that can offer new armor/skins even weapon but armor is the main concern.
So if a Dev is reading this can we possibly be expecting anything like this in the near future?
1vs1 is tough deal, I think only Signet Necro has real good chance came on top every time.
Mesmer, if can burst Ele out of stealth the to around %15-20 then it can stun lock and kill him, before the mirror blade and mantra nerf, Mesm can instagib D/D Ele out of stealth.
A Thief should not 1vs1 a D/D Ele, it is not its role, it should gang the Ele when Ele is already fighting somebody preferably at %50 HP then it will have no time to react.

As mesmer : always use staff/GS + PU for condi shatter build, as d/d is mele you have the luxury of playing counter-attack when the ele is forced to get close; I suggest using mantra of resolve for cleansing of burn stacks, snare the ele into chaos field
As thief : D/P is your answer, but you must know ele CD and skills/utilities and realize when you can land a safe backstab/steal to chain chill; never face an ele directly and on his own terms, you have stealth for a reason
Remember to be always patient, being overly aggressive never help, bait dodge, wait to attack
what if i am playing shatter mesmer?
Ok so I play quite a bit of pvp/wvw as thief or mesmer and so far every ele i have encountered has insane mobility/sustain/burns – so my question is how do i fight against this?

So what i have tried to do is to alter the standard d/p build – the main center of this has been to focus around the hidden killer trait that allows 100% crit chance in stealth, this mixed with shadow arts and d/p and used effectively will guarantee backstabs and large crits. The use of wurm runes allows us to sit with a large pool of hp and also at 240% crit damage. Also using food and utility we can increase power which is lacking from runes to raise that up to allow for large backstab hits. This being said this build lacks stun removal but has a good amount of sustain. I leave the utilities to be played around with i have taken assasin signet to compensate for lack of power due to runes but i feel this could work – main con being slow movement feel
