Open world Duels [Merged]
this is not the first time 100% of players agree…
I didn’t agree. Scroll up and read my post to see why. You can’t just assume everyone wants this just because the majority in this thread does.
Loads of people say that ANet love and listen to their player-base, yet this must be one of the most unanimously agreed on topics in the game and yet still nothing…
I urge everyone who sees this thread to at least post ‘I agree’ or something similar so ANet can see how much this feature is wanted.
here here! I private dueling system or private arenas would be amazing!
see? this i can back. something set in a separated place, away from the crowds, preferrably in the mists, with a whole system to back it up. not a duel request button you can press anywhere.
So you don’t support any way for two casual friends to “privately” duel without a crowd of people around?
So me and a friend can just mess about and fight each other without embarrassing ourselves in front of “hardcore” players?
who said anything about that? having an entire structure built into it includes having special duel maps. the mists lobby would serve as a place to pick random fights or join a friend, among other things.
I should be able to duel where ever I feel like when the game is called Guild WARS 2.
I should be able to duel where ever I feel like when the game is called Guild WARS 2.
you’ve said it yourself. have you ever seen one-man wars? nope. the wars are there, and duels aren’t wars. so that’s by far the weakest reasoning i’ve seen so far.

It’s the best reasoning if you figure out what wars are about. People fighting other people. If I want to wage a personal war against someone in a duel then I should have the option to do so.
As others have said, if Anet adds dueling they can add an Option to the Game Menu> Options window that says:
Auto Decline Invitations to Duel
Auto Decline Guild Invites
Auto Decline Party InvitesReally they already should have an option to auto-decline party invites i think. Then.. people who /never/ want to Duel.. or /never/ want to Party.. or never want to be part of any Guild never ever have to manually decline invitation requests. The game does it “silently” and automatically for them.
Absolutely. Especially on the Guild and Party invite front. The number of times I’ve been running a dynamic event (usually a boss battle) and someone’s stood on the sidelines spamming Guild or Party invites to the rest of the group instead of participating is annoying to say the least.
As for dueling, I’ve said it countless times – I have no objection to it as long as I can auto-block duelling requests. I personally find duelling in some games to be nothing more than an annoyance, especially when I have a character doing something else (i.e. crafting).

Im ready for dueling its a good past time and everybody is for it
Need a dueling option kitten Joining an empty hot-join server is not good enough, I have spent the last 3 hours getting interrupted all the kittening time.
How am I meant to practice when the fight is interrupted all the time?
They want this to be an esport and not give us the tools, this one has to be the simplest surely? Watching/participating in duels in the mists would be freaking awsome, why is it not there?

I completely agree.
I like costume brawl because it gives me time to waste while my friends are waiting.
4x Necromancer, 3x Mesmer, 4x Guardian, 4x Thief, 4 Revenant
I’m in too. Duels will be great improvement of this game.
So this is strait out of WOW but the pvp in this game is so much better, I think if you added a duel another player for fun with no consequences feature, that would be awesome! Also, this game needs to do more with structured pvp, it’s fun the way it is, but 2v2 or 3v3 arenas would be so fun, or even 1v1. I’m not saying copy WOW, add some of the guild wars flare to it, but we really need some pvp updates!
costume brawl: proof that dueling should never be implemented in GW2.
don’t get me wrong, i love costume brawl. it’s hilarious and chaotic. but it’s only fun while it’s done for mischief and kept as an isolated, temporary activity (namely, you only see it happening in lion’s arch, where large groups of players brawl). dueling would spread that special effect spamfest to the entire map, everywhere, all the time.
not to mention the rendering issues. in costume brawl, it’s harmless, but if you’re one on one against someone and you can’t see that someone anymore, how does it work?
You saying that is proof you apparently have never played an MMO with dueling. Because what you predict will happen doesn’t actually happen.
Every mmo i’ve played that has dueling ends up with people who really enjoy duelling finding an out of the way place to duel each other. Usually sort of “unofficial” dueling groups gatherings start happening in out of the way places where the fighters will have lots of clear space and line-of-sight.
Because for one, duels tend to be 1 on 1 things. you don’t WANT to duel in a big crowd of people standing on top of each other. you can’t SEE the person you’re dueling that way. you need empty space to fight right.
Costume Brawl does not work how dueling works in any game i have ever played.

That is sort of how it ends up working in most games i’ve played, people who want to duel form these little ‘rings’ in out of the way areas. the fighters go in the middle and fight. Everyone else just watches.
I agree with you, no one else seems to have the maturity it requires to discuss this topic. They are all saying “DUELING MAKES MMOS BAD” when they really don’t know what they are talking about. +1 to you my friend.

OMG YES!
Please ANet, please, please pleaaaaaaaaassssseeeee
I prefer the idea of a Arena based system, where if both players accept the Duel they are placed into a PvP Zone.

Consensual dueling would be OUTSTANDING. And the near unanimous agreement across this thread, minus 3-4 people, tells me that it’s likely to become a reality if Anet knows what they are doing =D
Keep up the good work, folks!
I would like to see dueling too. It would be fun to fight with your friends 1v1

Yea and those people that do disagree simply disagree just because they like to disagree and have no real logical reason as to why dueling should not be added.
Thumbs up. My favourite.
I support this suggestion! +1
Yes please. I want duels.
Gives something to do while waiting for an WvW invite !
There’s no point in dueling.
And you already can.
And it’s still a bad idea.
Reasons it’s a bad idea: It’s already possible to do. It never has served a purpose in any game, other than passing time, and you can do that with costumes. It’s never balanced, especially here, where all competitive content is perfectly balanced around closed mechanics in a 5 man team.
So shines a good deed in a naughty world.

I too support this initiative. A great competitive pastime activity and a very helpful tool for the resolution of roleplaying feuds. And, of course, those fancy arenas would be filled with life.

Thank you for your support.
I whole heartedly agree.
Thumbs up for dueling. And inspecting.
They’ve said before that the game isn’t balanced for 1v1 combat, so dueling would be, potentially incredibly, unbalanced. If they leave it unbalanced, it generates an ENDLESS stream of complaining. If they attempt to fix it, now the entire game has to be rebalanced around dueling. Not worth it, imo.
As for inspecting, a HORRIBLE idea. this would lead to the kind of elitism that has no place in this game. If you want to know what gear someone has, ask them. If you want to admire their gear, take a screenshot or three.
i figured dueling was a common sense must prior to release….huh….please put it in. i want to duel my friends.
/signed.
Duel, 2on2, 1vs3, doesn’t matter.
In the streets, on the bed, or in PvP Arena, doesn’t matter either.
As long as we can choose our rivals.
This also allows players to experiment a lot of things and enhances greatly the fun~
This also leads to a “healthier” social life in game :P

Yes I have wanted to test out builds for 1v1s (other than on a training dummy of course) but have been unable to because of there being no dueling option. Or perhaps I wanted to just pwn a friend just to say I was better.. still unable to. Dueling is needed! Thanks for your support.
I say add it and stick in the options a way to disable the ability to receive them. Dueling is always fun and a good way to test out builds with friends to see if certain aspects work before jumping in to the heat of battle. You can only test so much on a un-moving dummy.
Personally I do not want duelling or Inspect features in GW2.
I do not want unsolicited requests from people eager to show off their manly/ womanly prowess at being better then me (99% of players are better than me btw), therefore I would want to see a mechanism in place that automatically sets you as “Not available for duelling”
I also would not want to see duelling allowed in major outposts and cities etc (other than in set aside arena’s) so that those not interested in duelling do not have to have bouncing toons and flashing animations going off all around them.
The ability to inspect will only lead to more you cant join for x dungeon as your gear is not up to scratch, if you want to know what I am wearing then ask and if I am in the mood I will link it to chat.

You failed in both your points, number one they would not add dueling without certain restrictions + an option to disable dueling(that’s just common sense) and second if people want to know your gear before you go into a dungeon, they can just tell you that you are required to link every piece of gear or you aren’t allowed in the group. That simple.
Hmm. Seems there are a few opinions here. Maybe I can come up with something ….
- Dueling would be an option that you could set to off either in settings, or whenever you’re asked to duel.
– If someone declines a duel with you then you must wait an hour to ask them again, or some other span of time.
– Dueling would not incorporate an in-game effect, only a pop-up for affected players. So no flags everywhere.
– Dueling would port you to an instanced arena like a dungeon, flat land surrounded by water.

To comment on one of your things: an hour is WAY too long for a penalty.. imagine if you challenged your friend to a duel and he ACCIDENTALLY declined? Just simply add an option where you can auto-decline is what arenanet would do.
I would love to see an in game dueling option, or even. Allowing for quick matchups with friends to do 1v1 , 2v2 , 3v3
Sometimes you just want to practice against certain builds or bragging rights against each other.
personally, i’d love to see a dueling option in the game. i think the necessary limitations on it have already been covered by other posters in this thread, so there’s no need for me to be redundant. though, perhaps instead of making an auto-decline option, a toggle couple be put in. “dueling available” and “dueling not available” or something along those lines. which could be switched back and forth after a short cooldown. while i’d probably keep mine set to on most of the time, sometimes i have things i need to take care of, and would like to be allowed to focus on that while i’m doing it.
Everyone (well lots and lots of people do anyways) loves to duel in every MMO ive ever seen. best system Ive seen so far though was in DC Universe Online. You flag yourself as wanting to duel, an emblem appeared above your head, when someone tries to interact with you they challange you to a duel. To which you accept or decline.

Indeed and perhaps after(if they do) add dueling, they could add extras to it like that (the 2v2s and 3v3s).
no for duelling from my side
sorry guys but i just think that GW2 should keep different to other MMO’s and duelling is just like every other MMO
sitting around waiting for an event to happen would be totally different if people start jumping around like crazy, headless chicken while they are fighting each other…
just think back at all the duelling in LA at the mystic forge during the helloween event
…this was more than just annoying
just my opinion
english isnt my native language
Indeed needed, please implement this.
Hell yes, this would be great addition to GW2
+1
Money can’t buy happiness, But it allows you to search in more places to find it !
Up until today I didn’t care if dueling was in the game or not. I personally wouldn’t use it.
I attempted to do some structured with my BF today and of course I got my face pwnt off by a bunch of thieves that stealth bomb you. After about 3 matches I get into this one where someone let everybody know in map chat they were using the map to “duel.” We were instructed to leave if we weren’t okay with that.
I started to play according to the objectives because I figured it was just one person on each team. I wasn’t okay with it but I could at least play my match since the rest of my team wasn’t useless. I capped the Henge. I was then blown up in map chat and yelled at for being “rude” and quite a list of other things. I proceeded to explain that if they wanted dueling that bad, they should get active and take to the forums at the very least. You won’t ever get what you want if you take no action after all.
If I go into an SPVP match, I want to be able to play some SPVP. I shouldn’t be kicked out by other players that won’t play the match. I’m not the one that’s doing something wrong after all. If people don’t want to play a match, they shouldn’t join one. If people joined a match so that they could walk around and RP, they’d be equally productive as these “duelers.” Basically what it boils down to in my head is this: If you don’t want to play the match, don’t join.
Give people the ability to duel. Get it out of the SPVP maps please. This now effects those of us who wouldn’t even use it.
Adding in a vote for this as well, with a betting option too. It could also raise karma the first few times done a day then decline.

Yes I have wanted to duel someone before but was unable to because every empty lobby we joined several other people joined soon after. Adding dueling would fix those things. Thanks for your post.
Arenenet, add in dueling!
NO way there should be a dueling option what so ever, this is an MMO not a fighting game, and I do not want people that feel the need for an kitten Stoking constanly spamming Duel on me when I am busy with other tasks.
PLEASE DO NOT ADD THIS JUNK.

So.. you don’t want dueling to be added because you’re too lazy to check the “auto decline duels” box? You remind me of the people that think that player mailing shouldn’t exist because they might be sent a mail from another player. If you are afraid of player interaction go play a single player game, this is an MMO and player interaction is what makes it fun.
This is how Dueling in an Open World MMO usually looks like if one person doesn’t want to duel:
IpWnU: “Hey Marvin, you and me, here, now!” requests duel
Marvin: declines request “Na man, I don’t like dueling”
IpWnU: “Come on, you’ve got dual legendaries and are rank X in Y, what have you got to fear?” requests again
Marvin: “Dude, I said no. Go bother somebody else.” declines request again
IpWnU: “What, you’re afraid? Can’t back your title up with skill?” requests again
Marvin: "Jesus Christ, ST?U man and go to the PvP lobby. enables auto decline duels
IpWnU: spams duel a few times, realizes Marvin’s on auto decline Hahaha, what a ?ussy! Can’t deal with playing the game seriously, right Marvin? proceeds to ridicule Marvin in all/map chat
Marvin: puts IpWnU on ignore and leaves the area
Everybody else around: hopes IpWnU will leave, tooThis happens in every MMO where open world dueling is allowed. And the most harmful aspect of it isn’t that Marvin got bullied off the map by that guy, it’s the fact that a lot of people witnessed it. People like IpWnU set examples like that, and the inhibition threshold for other players like IpWnU sinks to a point where they don’t feel bad either for being aggressive and do as IpWnU does. More players argue and fight in chat about ego, being afraid of one another, you know, all that mindless waste of character space narcissistic, mentally 12 year old individuals with a god complex can produce, turning your PvE environment, which in ANets case is all about cooperation, it into a hostile environment for players that don’t want anything to do with fighting each other.
For your average, and by average I mean immature, PvPer, saying “no” to a request is a sign of defiance. Everything involving other players is a competition for these kinds of players, and another player having the audacity to not grant him his wish to own their behinds is a form of resistance that must be broken. They want to dominate you. So they try and provoke you to get what they want, which pretty much never works. How this scenario plays out I’ve already written down for you. Ignoring them is like ignoring bullies in high school – they get aggressive and force a reaction of you.
Implementing dueling at all is risky because it opens up the door to becoming a tool for some of the most annoying and reprehensible human behavior anonymous virtual environments can catalyze.
In GW1, dueling trash talk was basically contained to one area of the game, one outpost that was what the Heart of the Mists is now. A lobby where all kinds of players(mostly PvPers) gathered to talk, discuss and trade. There was no title for dueling, it wasn’t a dedicated feature, it wasn’t encouraged at all by ANet. But you could do it. You could be invited to someone’s guild hall, enter a skirmish match with them and ignore the objectives. If the same thing happens in GW2, I won’t be worried at all. Even if they decide to add a dueling as a context menu entry of player interactions to automatically get transported to an empty locked map: as long as it’s contained to the PvP lobby I don’t see it becoming a problem. But I trust ANet that they won’t encourage dueling or poison the PvE world with all of the trash talk that comes with it.
Yes, people are jerks.
But I don’t buy it. This situation you described is not so common. Really. More common are jerks that leave PUG team at dungeon, because the teammates are too slow (in his maniac opinion). Really, that makes me mad a lot more. Or dungeon “so-called-pros” that ridicule players that run it for the first time.
People are jerks.
But argument that people will spam duel invites is… silly. It’s invalid argument. In CO I ever got that situation. In DCUO also.
Have some faith in our comunity. Really. Does GW2 community is really that toxic? Jerks, yeah, but ego bully buffoons? Nah.

Ah dueling..yes please..would add a lot of fun to the game.
